Mussorgsky: Complete Piano Works

Modest dedicated the pieces to his mother's memory.
The work was edited and revised by W. G. Karatyguine
Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was a Russian composer, one of the group known as "The Five". He was an innovator of Russian music in the Romantic period. He strove to achieve a uniquely Russian musical identity, often in deliberate defiance of the established conventions of Western music.
Many of his works were inspired by Russian history, Russian folklore, and other national themes. Such works include the opera Boris Godunov, the orchestral tone poem Night on Bald Mountain and the piano suite Pictures at an Exhibition.
For many years, Mussorgsky's works were mainly known in versions revised or completed by other composers. Many of his most important compositions have posthumously come into their own in their original forms, and some of the original scores are now also available.

2:32 Thank you for uploading the score of this little-played work. And also for the tricky editing work where you cut unused staves out. A correction to your labelling of the staves: At 2:32, the 2nd and 3rd staves are clarinets and bassoons (not oboes and clarinets).
Thank you very much!
I was quite disappointed to find out that the little Trio in the second movement (Mazurka) is not in the original piece ☹️
I just love these pieces. I love the French titles as well which largely describe moods and emotions. Did Dupont get the title "Le soir tombe dans la chambre" from a poem by Georges Rodenbach? Most certainly! Although I understand French reasonably well, still I looked it up online. Here is what I got: When evening has fallen in the quiet room Melancholically, only the chandelier crumbles Its noise of discontent in the closed silence. Chandelier always vibrating like a tree of echoes, Chandelier with fine chalices of Venetian glass Where the pain of dust lingers, But in moans that were barely noticed, Thin as a distant sorrow of harmonica. It is a panoply with rattling glass Where one hears the wounded noise that perseveres; It is a large reliquary with a vegetal aspect Where invisible tears, captive in the crystal, Roll in wet sounds among the pendants. Chandelier, white fountain with equivocal frosts; Chandelier, frozen jet of water, but where the water still suffers... This chandelier is my heart visible in this setting
That could be a interesting reference. I should look for a Dupont biography, never thought about that honestly! Do you now some?
It kinda looks like "Isle of the dead" !
great piece, but played absolutely catastrophic 😲
God you just know the GREAT Luciano Pavarotti immediately….❤️
Lively, comparable to Vierne
im gonna kiss you on the mouth

Wonderful piece…I don’t know why, but it reminds me of Scriabin d sharp minor Etude…One has to notice the similarities in the musical invention, at least in the 1st subject
And another French genius !

Unmistakenly French. The delicate tenderness. Impressionist language. Serene and dreamy. Tres Manifique.

Just beautiful. Brahms is truly a master. Thanks for sharing! Gives me plenty of inspiration as a composer.
Is the first note of 25e musere is wrong note? ❤
A fine piece. First three movements on the level of Dvorak or Brahms
I first heard this today on the Symphony channel on SXM!! Its gorgeous! Is it just me or do i hear elements of Gershwin in this piece? 😍❤️
