Over 3 days (First day being stock and plant delivery). We test a build style of bank repair near Skew Bridge, Rushey Platt, Swindon. We were unable to dam or lower the water level for this trial, so a lot of work was done beneath the water level. The idea of this weekend is so we can reflect, review and calculate any changes, what was successful and plan forward as we have almost half a mile o...

Would it not be more efficient to use a long reach digger great job though
Very interesting. Found it difficult to hear some of the audience questions. Work party member, swindon
Thanks for the mention, I’m sorry I couldn’t make the AGM it’s been a busy few months
Great work and looking forward to helping during the winter months :)
This is amazing! Really interesting to watch. Thank you to you all for your time and expertise - great video, the drone footage helped bring it all together visually 🤗🚐
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing stuff chaps, I walked through here a few weeks ago, it was full of butterfly’s and dragon flys, incredible stuff
Fantastic work Andrew, Dave and Ray. I popped in last week and was impressed with the work. Btw Andrew I’ve got some shots of Ray pulling the stumps if you need it
Superb work ❤
Is the bank now back to where it would have been originally, secondly, would that method work out cheaper than the usual piling and finally, will that new bank withstand moored boats when it eventually becomes solid ?
Great questions. Yes, the bank had eroded more than a metre in places. Piling is no longer an option, it has to be fully environmentally friendly to wildlife, especially water voles now. Yes it should be very sturdy. This method will be back filled and replanted also giving even more strength and stability.
Great update Howard, and quickly published Andy. 👍
Fabulous environmental update. Inspirational. Many thanks, Howard.
Excellent work and hopefully the next work party will complete the structure with backfill and we need to look at planting the coir. Lots more to do with >400m of bank to repair.
Proper Job
Thank you 👍
Does it have a supermarket cart and old bike seperator? 😁
Just subscribed. Canals are historically important to our atea as well. Lovely tour. ❤ From Buffalo, NY 🦬 Erie Canal Welland Canal Love Canal 😢 Cheers for a lovely Wednesday!
Great work Peggy-Sue. Thank you for giving us a tour of the sack house inside. I've always wanted to have a look in here ☺️. Thank you so much for showing us around... That location would have looked amazing when the wharf was in use on the Wantage Arm of the Wilts & Berks. Cheers, Paul
So, has this all been achieved?
Not yet - although not through want of trying !
Some beautiful shots especially at this time of year. Just shows how lovely the countryside is around there. I must return for a walk there!
Great update from the Pewsham site. Lovely work on the dry dock. Interesting to see the galvanised steel supports. Brilliant work as ever. Thank you! Paul.
The old ways are the best ways, great effect minimal tools.... I love the fact that at the end she just climbed into the tree to lay it.
Good video, well done guys keep up the good work 👍
Congrats and I hope it brings in some money to your cause.😊😊
not sure the lock is in full working order, looks like it's seen better days to be honest even though it's only 15 years or so old.
Unfortunately, to keep the lock in best order the wood needed to be kept fully damp. This is done with constant use. Unfortunately the development is linked in (planning and construction) with house construction of which it's being funded by 106 funds. This has been much slower due to the economy. Therefore the lock was not connected up for use. The gates will probably need maintenance. They are still under ownership of the developers at present, as East Wichel has not yet had a handover to the Trust. The time is getting closer and we will assess the gates at that stage.
Hedge laying looks like a (fairly?) easy way to encourage wildlife along the canal side! Thanks for your hard work! 👍
Thanks everyone, that was really interesting 👍 If anyone wants to follow it on old maps, The National Library of Scotland has them freely available online.
Awesome work, I’m looking forward to seeing more of that bridge!
Great to see the update. A few days work with a chain saw should make a big difference.
Wiltshire and Berkshire canal, have a word 😂
It was corrected later on.
The person who spotted it deserves credit. Do the council own the canal there then ?
Yes, From Kingshill to the edge of the aqueduct. The Swindon work party found the sink hole, during routine inspection. A brilliant team of volunteers 😁
CRT not involved?
The Wilts & Berks Canal is not part of the CRT network.
Well done WBCT and SBC. Interesting times ahead 😁
Super proud to be a volunteer at Pewsham locks.
What a superb venture and huge bonus to the community and the trust! Well done to everyone involved
Well done all
Amazing work 👍
Fantastic job done by all. This looks amazing already, will be very interesting to see it in a few years time when it’s fully established
Good to see 👍 All natural watercourses are wildlife corridors so it makes sense to encourage this as much as possible. But man management can be a two edged sword. I wonder what would happen if the areas were simply left. I guess you'd get a different ecosystem, but not necessarily worse ?
Left to it itself there would be less diversity - hazels and short lived trees gradually dying off as some have. Few flowers for insects and a lack of tree seedlings. The deer are grazing away most of them. By creating different light levels and spaces, the wood can regenerate. Woodland management takes place in about half of the country’s woodland. We must manage them to keep the flora and fauna that has evolved as a result of man’s management over thousands of years.
This was really interesting to see what other restoration and maintenance goes on behind the scenes on the W&B. Very important work to help with biodiversity because of the increased light after coppicing has been carried out. Thank you. Paul
I can’t wait to see it all open and hope to get on a boat trip as soon as it is!
Wow! What a machine. We'd love to own one of those. Slightly tongue in cheek, would anybody like to make a generous donation to enable us to buy one?!
It will be marvellous for the canal to be extended from the Wichelstowe stretch. Exciting times afloat are ahead!
What a great introductory video. Many thanks, Alan.
Interesting to see, thanks. I haven't been following closely, but is the route going east to a proposed M4 underbridge then or a new route east out of Swindon, or both ? Perhaps link to a map ?

Thanks Rob, really interesting overview 👍
We should buy a Truxor for the canal trust.
That would be lovely 😉
A hundred grand excluding attachments....
Who's "we" ? The amount of money paid into CRT they should buy their own instead of buying pub lunches !
Great job and a bit of firewood too
Good to see plenty of cooperation between boat crews, & forestry gang :)
Restoring 72 miles of one of the longest and most lost of lost canals. What a job! All the best with this venture.
