East step by step tutorial on how to properly get on your horse from the ground. Happy riding!
I've never done a western pleasure cut before, this video has really helped. I'm having to cut my cousin's horses mane so hopefully it'll turn out like your horses mane
Do not cut horse's manes. They serve specific purposes. Cutting them defeats those purposes. Let a horse be a horse. Stop making it about you.
hi! My AQH mare is trotting and cantering cross rails, but I'm nervous to move it to a vertical. We have been doing the X for months now and she rarely hits it, I just don't want her getting hurt in case she jumps too low. Any tips on helping her jump higher?
Did this in case i decide to show my mare
Thats to short and why dont u pull it instead of cut it
This will actually work for me
Why would you want to cut it?
this really helped my horse Zoe I have been training her she started off at a crazy wild horse but know she has become a really good horse the only thing we need to work on is getting her to not spooke when things make noise ans mostly jumping. She is also great at liberty work
My Life As A Country Girl same with my horse, your not alone
Your horse is soooo pretty!!!! And great video, it's great how you don't rush things like some people try to do. I have a question, I'm trying to teach my horse to jump but she never will canter over even a pole on the ground. She's very lazy and not forward at all, perfectly healthy, but I'm not sure why she won't canter over a pole. I decided to get some spurs, although I don't like using them, and it still wouldn't work. I've also tried to lunge her over the pole and she completely avoids it, as she's on a lunge line. If we had a lunge pen, perhaps that would help, but at the moment we can't get one. How do I teach her to jump if she doesn't even try?!
Very short 😂 but soooo pretty
Lol thanks! That's western pleasure I suppose lol!!
I have a dressage horse that I'm trying to jump, he seems to be a bit afraid of the poles even when they're on the floor. When we're facing the jump he tries to move aside or jumps oddly in diagonal, he also seems to lift a lot his hands and stretch the neck ( he looks like a giraffe when jumping tbh ) He also seems to jump up and not forward. The last time I rode him he refused to jump and I fell, after that I tried to jump him again and he seemed a lot more scare of the jumps. What can I do ? he's not my horse and I don't ride him every day ( only on weekends) any tip of how can I help him to jump correctly? and make him stop being afraid of the poles too
Hi De Visvana! Great questions! So here's what I would personally do... take it SLOW for him. When your horse is afraid of something do not make it even more stressful for him by pushing him to jump. Begin with just hand walking ground polls, then lunging over them, to then riding over them. When jumping a horse you want them to find it fun, not scary (that's when people get hurt). Reward him for going over the ground polls when just hand walking (either through praise, treats, anything that makes him feel happy and safe with you). Until both of you are confident over ground polls, do not push jumping. Also, are you leasing this horse or just riding? I would double check with his owner if they are okay with you starting him over jumps, as there could be a reason (either physical or mental) behind him being afraid of jumps (which is always good to know when beginning teaching a horse to jump). Riding is not a race... it is a sport that you craft throughout your life. Just take things slow and be patient If you have anymore questions feel free to message me through UA-cam or through my instagram page @reckless_rider (I'm on instagram a lot more, so i'll get back to you much quicker). Best of luck!!!
My horse trots over but when I tell him to canter he slowly goes to trot over the jump, do you have any idea how I can stop that?
Hi Emily! So this is a common problem with horses who lack forward. Did you start your horse over a ground poll/ polls in the canter before attempting to jump him over a fence in the canter? Also, how high are you starting him? Is it a vertical or a xrail?
@@brookehurst3380 My horse just canters over the jump and its like 1.5ft tall(by this I mean that he doesn't pick up his feet like a horse that knows how to jump). Is putting the jump higher going to teach him how to jump or what do you suggest for me to do.
cool
A horse's name is beautiful, why chop it like that 😲 my horses mane is long and wild...like it should be.
i love a long mane too but thats how long they should be in the show world
Hi Eliza! When he was showing often I kept his mane short, but now that he is not showing anymore his mane is super long. Most of my horses manes are long except for the ones I show. I try to keep them as natural as possible, but most disciplines (when showing) requires a short mane.
Hi Michelle! I love a long mane too! They look beautiful! Too bad the show world just isn't there yet!
Nice job. Concise directions are easy to understand 🐴 Keep them coming.
Great video :)
Thank you!!
I'm 4'11 and my horses are 16 through 18 hands how can I get on my horse from the ground ?
Hi Leila, my advice for that would either be to stretch your hamstrings so that you can easily life your leg to the stirrup, or to length the stirrup (if you ride english) so that you can reach the stirrup and then adjust them once you are on your horse. You can use it at your own discretion, as this does not work for everyone. It might for you though! Hope this helps :)
what if your 4'11 and your horse is 16 hands and 18 hands ?
I know this is a super old comment but I was told you lengthen the stirrups a few holes
i love the way short manes look! so clean-cut and professional. thanks, this was helpful!
Why don't you pull the mane and cut it instead as I have always been told you should pull a mane
Hi Caitlin. Great question. I typically cut my western pleasure horses mane because I am able to get a cleaner look when I band him for the western pleasure ring. Typically pulling the mane is better/ preferred for the hunters/jumpers because they are braided vs. the western pleasure horses that are banded. How that helps! :)
I love this video so much! You are soooo extremely helpful
Thank you so much. I'm thinking of getting a horse for Western Pleasure and if i do i will definitely be trying this. I love how you included details. Also you have a beautiful horse. Great vid!
Great!! Hope everything works out for you! Feel free to contact me on either youtube or instgram @reckless_rider if you need any advise! :)
Great video!
Thank you!!
If I did this the gelding I ride would jump over all the poles as if they were one long jump
LOL! Yeah my two of my other horses have done that with me, that's why I almost always start with just two poles... they eventually learn hahaha!
I know I'm pretty late but....your horse is SO pretty!!
Thank you! :)
Brooke Hurst You're welcome!
You should not do a vertical when the horse is just learning to jump
Hi there. If you watch the whole video you will see the progression of how you get to jumping a vertical. As I say in the end before I jump the largest vertical that you must have the flat work and then the crossrail work down before advancing onto a (small and then gradually onto a larger) vertical jump.
Beautiful horse!
Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing this amazing video! It is so helpful! ❤
Really helpful! Plus you are so close to 100 subs now!!
Glad you found it helpful :)
Would this help to straight up my horse. :)
In my opinion, for sure! I believe that this gives your horse something to focus on, while also encouraging him to straighten out in order properly get over each pole. Hope this helps!
Yh i was thinking the same... alright then thanks. :)
No problem! :)
When jumping over vertices do you need to apply pressure or anything?
Typically I apply a little bit of pressure when going over verticals in order to maintain good equitation. However, I make sure that my horse has an ample amount of forward before going over the jumps so that I do not have to "push" him over the jump. If your horse does not have forward prior to jumping, I would not advise jumping him quite yet. Hope this helps!
Great video!!! ❤ Glad to see you back in UA-cam 😊
