Tenkara on the Trail
United States
Приєднався 25 лис 2021
My name is Kris and I would like to welcome you to TENKARA ON THE TRAIL! I am passionate about fly fishing for trout in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in Southern Montana!
I spend most of the summer on solo backpacking trips, deep in the 944,000 acre wilderness trying to reach as many of the 300+ fishable lakes as I can. Along the way, I fly fish the countless streams, rivers, creeks and lakes for numerous trout species: brook trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, and golden trout.

Thank you for the information! I have a 20’ rod but find the premade owner rigs are too short, but as mentioned lengthening tippet only forces you to fish deeper. I wish it were a bit easier to find yarn marker spools instead of buying precut ones, and the winder box looks excellent! At best I fit 3 foam spools per pocket in my vests or packs.
Yeah, I bought the yarn marker spools from Tenkarabum back when he carried them. I don’t use them often so they should last me a lifetime.
@ Whoa! Thank you for the quick reply! It’s a shame the right yarn is difficult to track down now. I’ve found pretied markers state-side but am hesitant to pay that price for less than half of what comes on the Owner precut marker cards. Unfortunately I’ve lost entire lines before after fish shake the hook and the rod tip launches the rig into trees so it’s time for me to look into making my own lines.
If you ever purchase something from Tenkara -ya, I’m sure he could also procure yarn spools.
Come to think of it, perhaps check with Keiryu rod company…maybe they can obtain some.
Great job Kris. Nothing like winter nymphing and 2 nymph rigs :). Also, it appears this rod is no longer available but will be replaced by something new in 2025, so we'll be keepig eye on that. Tight Lines!
Thanks, much appreciated!
awesome video!
Thanks!
@ I really like the flies you’ve tied on instagram; how long have you been tying? and what kind of silk do you use?
@mvsc-k5e I’ve tied a lot over the last 10-15 years, but I started well before that. The silk I’ve been using lately is TIRE.
@ thank you. I did send you a message on IG if you have a moment
@mvsc-k5e cool, I’ll take a look
Shakin' off the early almost Winter "gottsta Tenkara fish Blues"? Wonder if that Beautiful last Rainbow caught was bigger than the one that got away? Very generous advice given regarding the Sawanobori 53 Keiryu rod rigged up for Tenkara angling, viewers should be grateful as this is rare disclosure, and not content seen on other Tenkara UA-cam channels. LOL, you are quite the scoundrel having alluded to yet did not reveal the mystery revelation (hinted could risk being hit by lightning) . Where was the Grand entrance of the Sawanobori 63, both perhaps next episode? VIEWERS STAY TUNED!!! Thank you Kris, nice .
Thanks Vic
can this rod still be bought anywhere?
It is made by suntech. I got mine from Tenkarabum but he’s retired. You would have to check either through Tenkara ya or perhaps a proxy. I don’t know if that particular model is still in production but suntech makes other great Keiryu rods as well as Nissin. Keiryu rod company carries a couple Japanese Keiryu rods too.
Hi @mvsc-k5e, I actually have an unused Sawanabori 53 I would be willing to sell. When I got mine I had been on the waiting list for 10 months, so I picked up a spare just in case. After 2 seasons of using the first one, I am pretty sure I don't need the spare. Just reply to this if interested, maybe we can exchange emails.

How bout them Dawgs? !!
I missed the comeback!
@ sadly me too! I gave up on them in the 3rd(kinda my own superstition) and learned my lesson to stay the course to the bitter(or joyous) end. Go Dawgs!!
Kris Kudo's for your Daiwa Master L LL36 Tenkara rod video debut. Only sparse extant Literature reviews by Tom Davis Teton Tenkara & Chris Stewart TenkaraBum exist profiling this rare fine and awesome Tenkara rod. Viewers are challenged to find another UA-cam video ( other than this one ) covering the GREATEST DAIWA TENKARA ROD MADE as it is now unavailable for purchase NEW anywhere! It is worth noting, "Tenkara on the Trail" has this uncanny and intuitive production history to debut the RAREST & FINEST Japanese Tenkara rods!!! Straight off the Daiwa Website regarding The Daiwa Master Tenkara L LL36 : " It was developed to realize the ideal Tenkara rod of master Etsuji Katayama, a leading expert in Tenkara fishing". Arguable the best 3.6M Japanese Tenkara rod made. Now extinct like the dinosaur! LOL. Well done.
Thanks Vic. You’re putting too much pressure on me!😂

Congrats, all!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing!
The brutal hike was made a little less brutal by that awesome action. Wish you had been able to land that two-hander.
Yeah, catching some nice fish after that sort of effort makes them that much sweeter.
Serious OFF THE CHART!!!!! Best action on the rising Cutthroat trout on the Giant Sakasa Wool Kebari and use of the wonderful ONI Honryu 450!!! Incredible action, you deserve it after that rough physically endured hike, really enjoyed that Oni 450 singing during each hook up. Well done Kris.
Thanks Vic. That was a fun time.
Beautiful scenery. Are the cutties native to the lakes?
No they are not native to the lakes. They usually have to be stocked at those elevations/locations, typically every 8 years by dropping them from planes/helicopters. Some of the lakes are self-sustaining depending on the spawning habitat.
Great video, I really enjoy all your videos. Could you post a picture of the flies you used?
@bradleyflood4213 thanks, I’ll have to check on the fly pics. Not sure if I have them.
@@tenkaraonthetrail that's okay, if could post the name of them and I'll look them up!!
@bradleyflood4213 the primary one is the Oxford wool kebari (sakasa). The others are typically just my own unnamed creations.
Congratulations on hitting 2k! And thank you for the opportunity to win. This is a great giveaway!
You bet, good luck!
Thank you for this giveaway!!!!
Thank you!
That's quite generous of you Kris. Catching fish with flies I've tied is an awesome feeling but you've taken it to the next level harvesting the birds, tying the flies and catching the fish. That's next level.
Thanks Deake!

Hey Kris, ordered some of your feathers from Jason. Well, the bird feathers anyway. Looks like a great deal and I'm looking forward to getting the order as I no longer hunt. Thanks for making these available.
Thanks Jim, hope you like them
Kris good luck on sons Elk hunt. I will be keeping a watch on Jason Klass's Etsy for the SharpTail Grouse . Good video thanks.
Thanks Vic. Jason does still have one sharptail in stock now.
What kind of cutthroat are those?
Yellowstone
Perhaps the best "Baby Tenryu 32TA" episode yet on very good sized Cutthroat for that tiny creek!!! I had to watch the vid a few times, as the Glock on chest holster stole the show. Every time you bent down to reach the trout I anticipated your Bear protection taking the plunge. LOL. Excellent video. 4 hours hard hiking territory to cover 2 miles insane, rewarded with the hidden treasure of absolutely beautiful native Cutthroat trout!!! Nice Kris.
Thanks Vic
Beautiful! Definitely a textbook Tenkara stream! Thanks for sharing w/those of us who can’t go right now! 🤔🤷🏻♂️😁 Neil
Kris, I bet the Well Hung Spider pattern would have solved your missed strikes problems…Karl.
Or just untangle my hook/tippett😂
"Mousing in the Rain" Fred Astaire? INCREDIBLE BIG SIZE CUTTHROAT !!! Viewers observed you reaching a few times the whimsical "10" on the now infamous Kris's School Girl Giggle Scale. Nice.
Thanks Vic
And now everyone on the internet can hear you giggling like a school girl! 😂 I’d be doing that too! There is something about mousing in the rain that makes trout super aggressive! Well done Kris! 👏
Yeah, I’m not afraid to make an arse of myself.
@@tenkaraonthetrail haha! Me either!
Thank you, great footage! The image quality is soo crisp! Love it. Gosh that TF32TA is tempting...... and Christmas is looming ooh nooo !
It is a fun little Rod. There will be some more videos coming up with it because we used it extensively on that weeklong trip.
@@tenkaraonthetrail can't wait 😉
Bonjour je suis français. Vous pêchez avec une tresse ou un level line!!!! Quel longueur ultisez-vous? Vous pêchez en sèche ou nymphe? Enfin quel est le prix de cette canne tenkara ? Merci pour vos réponses.
That was a level line about the length of the rod at its longest length. We were using a soft hackle wet fly, unweighted. That Rod is somewhat expensive and depends on the exchange rate with Japan. I’m not sure what it cost right now you could check PLAT or Tenkara-ya
@@tenkaraonthetrail Je vous ai envoyé un autre commentaire. L'avez-vous reçu ?
I did not see another comment.

Sorry, I’m not sure why I see this comment but not the other ones
Tenkara Tenryu Three Musketeers!!! Kris viewers can appreciate your video capturing the casting action and flex thru out the fight of that Tenryu Furaibo TF32TA. Can I ask were you all fishing at the rods full length 3.2 Meter ( 10'.49") setting thru out the video footage? Did ya fish the whole time with the Red Ass Monkey , or switch up to another kebari? Missed the presence of your dreaded yellow body brown hackle wet fly ( kidding). Nice contest, smallest and largest trout. Every fish on that rod is a winner. Thank you.
Yes, it was at the longest length with just the red ass monkey. And the future video we fished that same stream on the way back but much further upstream and I think we use a different fly
Left Oni home for this trip? My favorite type of water, thanks for sharing. We need rain out east, freestones are too low to fish.
Yes, it was a 7 day trip and most of it in new areas with thick timber and boulder fields. We also share a tent and would’ve needed to bring a second tent, but primarily didn’t want Oni to get dinged up in such a remote area.
How much line are you using on this setup?
I don’t recall exactly. Probably 20-22’ total.
Thanks Chris! I’ve got the Oni Style Coco rod. Big fan of everything except the baby blue color! Great smaller stream rod. Keep em coming, Neil.
Thanks Neil!
I have the Coco Blue 290 but had trouble deciding on which Nissin Oni to buy - the Nissin Oni 295 or the Nissin Oni 345 - so I'm thinking the Nissin Oni 345. What are your thoughts? Comparing the 295 with the 345, what are your thoughts? You have both. Tom Davis only reviewed the 345. Fred
Well there is a lot of overlap between the Coco 290 and the Oni 295 if you’re looking to spread things out a little bit the 345 is a wonderful Rod. I did a lot of fishing with that recently and I love that length. If you are completely happy with the Coco 290 then I would go with the longer 345.
Great set of 3 videos, Kris! I want to echo your findings--I LOVE both of these rods, and while the Coco is tip flexy and the 295 is more full flex--the biggest, most notable difference is definitely the grip. I've ordered some cork and am going to try to fashion a cork grip for the Coco and see what I think.
Kris very thorough analyses. Factored down to the essence of your review, I opine you basically concur with Masami Sakakibara Oni's thought process. The introduction of the ONI 295 & 345 filled the vacuum amidst the pre-existent Oni rod product line. Within the 3 meter class rods, the Oni 295 is a Tenkara rod proper, it's earlier released "older sibling" 290 Coco (blue or pink) a Seiryu rod. Tenkara vs. Seiryu rod both Oni 100% Classic in design and reputation. No play on words here; Oni rods!!! Are you kidding? Arguably the finest Japanese Tenkara rods made. Final rod selection will be made solely upon the obsessive compulsive mental state aka subjective taste of the angler. ( Buyer beware, either one, you can't lose). My 2 cents worth anyway, thanks.
Love your informational videos, great service to your viewers, thank you! With regard to the 295, would it be an appropriate choice for bead head nymphs in smaller fairly fast water? Also, knowing the lengths are not the same how would you rate the 295 to the Traveler 27 with regard to capability. The Oni seems like a great little rod, however I can't get past the colors, strange choices unless it's geared to children.
That’s a good question regarding the traveler 27. As a Keiryu Rod, it feels like it has more backbone but it is shorter like you noted. The 295 has a higher tippet rating but I don’t put too much stock in those. I would only be hazarding a guess and I think it would be splitting hairs to say which one is more capable. I don’t have a penny reading for the 295. I’ve caught or seen fish caught in the mid teens with both of those rods. They just do it in a different way. The 295 has a deep smooth bend and the 27 feels like it has stronger mid and lower sections. As far as bead heads yes the 295 handled them fine for me.
"I knew I had to have them". 😅🤣😂
Shocker I know
Rats, was hoping you had a Hellbender to ditch (though it makes me feel pretty good about buying one that you're keeping it). I'm looking for a big-ish-fish rod... I'm hoping to target coastal cuts from my SUP just off the beach in Puget Sound. That one seems like it's big enough that it'll handle what I need to to do, yet affordable enough (plus easy parts) in case there's a mishap along the way. If you know anything else that fits that description, feel free to let me know.
Sounds like the hellbender would be a good choice. You could consider one of the Wasatch Tenkara Rods like the T Hunter, but it is noticeably heavier but wicked strong.
@@tenkaraonthetrail Thank you. Good to hear. I was also thinking about a Rocky but it's in the next range up.
😍 Oooooooo that Tanuki 375! That still available?! You have a ton of great rods you are getting rid of!
Yep, several inquiries but only the HM30 R and the NP 66 have sold so far
