After the Bar S3 Ep 9 - Gangster to Lawyer: The Josephus Tan Story (Part 2)
Imagine losing everything-could you fight your way back?
In Part 2 of this episode, I continue my raw and powerful conversation with Josephus Tan, the "Gangster Lawyer." He reveals how he faced rock bottom and still found the strength to rise.
Despite his career success, Josephus hit some brutal low points:
Low Points:
- Overcommitted to free legal work-almost bankrupt.
- Marriage collapsed.
- Suffered a mild stroke.
- Ended up living in a van.
But Josephus didn’t just survive-he came back stronger.
His Comeback:
- Started smoking at 12, quit at 45-his latest victory!
- Rebuilt his life from nothing, twice.
- Went from a 1-room flat to a penthouse.
- Now a top lawyer, fiercely fighting for justice.
In this episode, Josephus gets real about the hardest moments in life, the importance of second chances, and the advice he’d give his younger self.
You’ll also hear critical tips on what to do if you’re arrested or caught in a police chase, and how defense lawyers handle client confessions.
Josephus Tan’s story is your roadmap to resilience.
This episode will move you-and leave you believing that no setback is final.

After the Bar Episode 7 Trailer 1 - Seize the Day
Your kindness and work are commendable. However, you need to find a balance between looking after others and your own family. This is basic responsibility. Even if you are single, the last thing you want is depending on charity. Then you become a church mouse. It does not bring glory to God
Thank you for your very aspiring stories. I have learnt a lot and hope to apply it to my life.
really loved this episode 🙌🏼 on a side note, josephus is such a good storyteller!
I wish I could share my personal stories with you. Till today, I am still saddened by it. I am not seeking a lawyer. I just need a listening ear and tell me where it when wrong,
Looks like Go dreally put him through a lot of self-transcendence. Maybe in future, God wants to use him for something significent. This could be his stepping stones to something greater. I dunno how I will fare if I was in his shoes. That’s all lot tp take in. But glad he persevered. What an inspiration. May God bless you more.
After watching five episodes starting with Josephus, I’m hooked. The thoughtful, attentive questioning stood out-no pre-prepared lines, even sensitive topics weren’t missed. It’s a stark contrast to the obvious questions local reporters ask, which make watching the news painful.
Josephus thank you for sharing your story! You are very inspiring. Praying for you.
I always say that lawyers need not feel "unfortunate" given that they are not going to be made partner in law firms. Lawyers need not tread the same path in pursuing partner status and consider this is the only career goal for them. The corporate world needs you guys and your contribution too! Be an in-house legal counsel! This is one aspect that strikingly make the law profession so different from the accountancy profession. In accountancy, only the "crazy" minority would want to be partners in accounting firms. Majority of Chartered Accountants or CPA are taking on senior corporate position in business and industry.
Actually a full-fledged legal profession ain't the only venue for NUS law graduates to earn great salary. Some NUS law graduates whom I know entered business and industry particularly global corporations and banking sector to take on compliance related function and eventually get promoted to senior management level. Pay is good. They were never called to the Bar and therefore won't call themselves a "lawyer" so to speak but so what right. A law graduate can also aim to be a corporate banker mah, cannot meh? 😕
"A hero must take good care of himself before he can become hero for others. Even Batman needs to rest well and recover in his cave before he goes out to fight the Joker again" :D
There is no guilt for the Christian because all our guilt in the old person have been washed up in Christ's blood so much so that the voice of the law that constantly seek to accuse, kill and destroy us is totally and utterly silenced when we stand before God because of what Christ has done for us and not of our own good works.
My hero lawyer ❤️
Why did you switch? Don’t spare any bones about it. Speak the truth and the truth will set you free.
Learn from wrong to right is your blessing wish you the best in life.🙏🙏🙏
Salute You 🎉
He can be 3rd member of power station. Got that vibe.
sg needs more of ppl like him.
"Chukup " - that's Classic ! ❤. Enough is enough.... contentment. Well said ! ❤ many of our woes are self-imposed when we are in a state of DISCONTENT because we will be happy and satisfied only when we "make the NEXT million $$$...
another way to spell this is "cukup " (enough, sufficient)
It so encouraging. God is good all the time!
I know this is very trivial, but how is Josephus short of 70cents when he had $4.20 and the caifan is $5.50.
For a piece of chicken wing, steam egg and vegetables. $5.50 is expensive.! That's not economical price...!!!🙄😬
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
such an inspiration! am going through a hard time and really motivational
Awesome share.
Wonderful sharing...❤
Hmm. I was also from a working class family, ie blue collar, but I was sheltered from the streets. I suppose it was the way my parents brought me up. I grew up in a Christian family, and vices are a no no.
I grew up in the 1980s too. To protect myself from bullies, I learned to politick. I ensured that I was always the teacher's pet, the top pupil, and sorry mate, any bully knew that if they laid a hand on me, I would tell the teachers and they knew that the teacher's pet is untouchable. Thank God my secondary school was NOT a neighbourhood school, and physical bullies were much fewer there.
Thank you for being open and sharing your experience. You inspire many.
Section 22A(1) of the Penal Code describes the fault (or mental) element of a crime in the following terms: “A fault element of an offence refers to any state of mind, proof of which is needed to establish liability under that offence, including but not limited to intention, wilfulness, knowledge, rashness and negligence.” In simple terms, the mental element of a crime (also commonly referred to as the “mens rea”) refers to the state of mind of an offender. Put another way, the mental element of a crime simply refers to the ‘guilty mind’ or ‘fault’ of an offender. There are several other defences recognised by the Penal Code which are premised on the idea that it would be unjust to convict and punish a person who had committed an offence when suffering some form of mental impairment. The defences are unsoundness of mind, intoxication, automatism and diminished responsibility.
And yea that they forgot to mention the 🤖 🦾 circumstances, state of mind, pertaining to the "destruction of evidence". "Trapped in that little room"," A Few pulling of strings behind" Irony. They would only edit out the parts that are useful for them. You know what insanity is? It's repetitive, habitual, it's like doing the same thing over & over again yet expecting different results, there are levels to this, well you are lucky, trying living your entire life being fed shit, destined for failures and expecting a saint, on the side note, it's someone who experiences such lives are able to relate better to the less fortunate but definitely not the condemned.
The key word is "any" crime, think again.
Great guy and all the best to him! 😊
Crimes, it's not just for one generation only, like a father to son and now a son to father, arrested at the birth of a child, marked, an idea is like a seed planted at a young age, manifested thus creating one's understanding of this world, habitus. For most of us, from point A to point B, histories has already been written before it happens.
Bro there are 5 cdc n mayors n various greenroot organisations here helping the desperate, Shulin you should have talk on this
She has already done her job.
Josephus you are so down-to-earth kind humble + compassionate I suffer from deep depression with low energy Most of my life is a struggle I think life is nothing but suffering+ misery I have many regrets that I hate myself Looking back...How could I have been so stupid?? Host you are lively attentive+ entertaining
I once called his law firm for some silly neighbour spat issues and remember that his charges is very 'atas'(pretty stiff) compare to a normal lawyer and I finally get another firm. He looks very much like the taiwanese power station duo group style and thanks for sharing so truthfully and willingly. 🌈
If you are thinking about going to court for silly neighbourhood spat then you are ought to be charged a princely sum for wasting everbody's time
What was yr problem then...???!!!🙄🤔
😊Josephus Tan has come a long way. All the best to his new life and May God bless him🙏
👍
Im a lawyer too and doing pro bono work is truly quite a thankless endeavour. However, I also know of many lawyers who set up shop on their own do lots of pro bono work because they don't have a good foundation of clients (hence use pro bono to gain experience and let more people know of them). Not sure if Josephus had fallen under this situation too, but still credit to him nonetheless for doing that much pro bono work!
I am so touched by his story especially his past and his journey to what he is today. I love his honesty and his positivity. I wish him well and all the best in his health. ( I was sadden when he shared his encounter with his cardiologist ). Thank you Shu Lin for sharing this podcast. Very inspiring and motivating. Nothing means more than giving someone or having a second chance. " Josephus , you are a Star ! "
Isn’t that wonderful? By helping others through pro bono work, we’re not only making a difference in their lives but also opening ourselves up to amazing opportunities with these amazing stories. God has a special plan for each of us, and I believe that through our actions, we can uncover those plans. Thank you for sharing your vulnerability and strength from God, Josephus. God bless.
Grab is so protected by their legal team that when you as a client has issues with the service, it’s impossible to find solutions
👍🙏
I was just dozed off When I was awaken my TV was on .This lawyer was on tv and watched a while and ready for bed and started to search for God 's words in youtube. It popped up this lawyer again Thks God
Love it! Hope to see Part2 soon
As a mother of a law student, I find your podcast insightful and inspiring. Thanks for this effort.❤
Hope some lawyers can stand up for bullying..Wich is still rampant in schools now..
I know of several lawyers have mental issue. Due to the nature of the profession, I guess. Basically, our life is not defined by legality. If your mind is always filled with legalism rather than justice and mercy in the ontological sense, then one day you will become a legal manic.... But at the end of it, it is still a much-needed profession in society. The question is whether lawyers are able to detach their personal dimension from their professional realm.
Really inspiring.
I was bullied when I was seventeen back in the early 2010s when I was in sec4, I got followed home and countless pranks I had to deal with but when I got hit in the head and probably broke my neck, everything just went downhill, I started experiencing memory failing drastically like slowly day by day forgetting things or the route back home. every time someone told me something or when teacher was teaching, within split seconds I forgot what happened earlier on. I started experiencing sleep deprivation where I couldnt sleep until 5am. by then I had to woke up at 6 to prep for school. during pe lesson while playing girl soccer I got hit in the private area. and the pranks from the guys got worse as they followed me home, kept banging the door, when I opened they had ran away before I opened. and the next time I didnt dare to open but heard neighbours who aren't in good terms with us helped to asked the bullies to leave else they're calling the police. I stopped going to school although my memory totally wiped out and teachers came to my house to persuade me to return to school as I started experiencing weak leg muscle. the student councillor didn't showed empathy when I was hopping my way to school as slowly I had trouble in time management, I left house before 6:30am and school was barely less than ten minutes away but I ended up in school past 7:30am. I even request from my teacher if I could come to school at 7:50pm because when I sit on the floor I didnt have the strength to do so and it pulls the nerves around my heart, he requested to allow me to sit at the study corner but the student councillor simply kept telling me to go sit at the parade square, so he request to allow me to come at 7:50am which principal allowed due to such special request. but the student councillor kept insisting to take down my name, back then I was an introvert and find it very humiliating, and all along I have stress capability of 20%, I couldnt cope with it along with class bullies kept fat shamming me as I put on weight after having sleep deprivation where I would just kept on waking up to binge drinking water in the middle of the night. I only went for English n level and failed as I didnt went to school for few months after getting bullied and brain malfunctioning, I felt that anxiety probably took over everything and my brain simply gave up. principal told me to get tested for thyroid and it was a bingo, from there on ive been seeing my doctor but she always insisted I have brain tumour even though mri scan showed no issues. nobody showed empathy from there on, I didnt further my studies, I tried getting a job after turning 24 when covid restriction were lifted but experienced brain fog and brain malfunction which caused sleep deprivation which took few months to get back usual sleep routine. and last year when I turned 26, my doctor said I have pituitary gland damaged. and this year I started having nightmare of the accident and finally remembered everything, throughout the years my mom always asked me what happened back then but I couldnt remember which eventually she didnt asked. I had throbbing headache since I was in sec4, when the daily headache stopped, I was told I have pituitary gland damaged, throughout the years I had frequent profuse nosebleeding which I raised to my doctor but she never said anything about it or how to prevent or how to deal with it. I even took photo of it as the nose bleeding doesnt look abnormal
Very touching and inspiring
