The Inquiry Into the 8th Fetter, the subtle sense of 'I am' or 'I exist'
The 8th fetter is the first step in the develop of the ‘Ego’ or the sense of ‘Me’.
The subtle sense of 'I am' or ‘I exist’ is created after a frantic search for something safe to stand on, something that was reliably there, something to hold onto. It had to be able to make sure that we’d always feel happy.
Since absolutely nothing could be found, the subtle sense of ‘I am’ was simply imagined.

Why do we insist that other people have to be the way we want them to be? In this video, I talk about why reactions come up and how you can be free of being pushed around by the circumstances. Even after breaking the first fetter and seeing that there is no permanent, unchanging, separate self, some residual sense of a self still remains. I think I’ve been misidentifying awareness/consciousness as that residual sense of a self/witness/perceiver and somehow trying to separate the contents of consciousness into not-self.

The more I look into theories of consciousness, the more I like model-based approaches. It appears that our minds build very simplistic models of reality in order to conserve resources and to increase applicability, i.e., the amount of reality that we have an explanation for. Donald Hoffman has done a lot of research on this approach and how it evolved to maximize a fitness function even at the cost of inaccurate representations of reality. Humans experience the universe and create a model of a self that is having those experiences. This model of a self is useful for explaining, understanding, and predicting how and why we do things and by extension how other people and societies act. However, it’s this separate self that seems to be in control of our thoughts and bodies and sits in our heads like a small homunculus somewhere behind our eyes that is illusory. It’s merely a construct. The more I learn, the more I think that everything we do is driven entirely by our subconscious and consciousness exists only to provide our subconscious with a predictive and introspective model of our own body and actions and how others interact with it. Somehow that model of a self in charge of our body must have provided a reproductive advantage to early hominids. Maybe because they could explain their behavior even if those explanations were completely inaccurate. This viewpoint is also supported by Gazzaniga’s split brain experiments where the left hemisphere of the brain comes up with explanations for what the body is doing even if those explanations are completely wrong. For example, show a message to the right hemisphere asking the person to leave the room and the left hemisphere will explain that the subject suddenly decided to go into the hall and get a soda from the vending machine.

Your direction of looking for a ‘Border’, along with Kevin S’s additional direction of looking for a ‘Separator, Partitioner, Filter’ process was enough to break this fetter in only a few days. Like your comment, I was wondering if it would have just fallen away naturally if I had waited for a bit longer settling-in period from the 7th Fetter’s breaking. In any case, Thank you.

The subtle sense of self never fell away. And I don't know how to make it happen.

The funny thing is that I think most people have already experienced no separate self, and it just wasn’t that big of a deal. If you’ve ever “lost yourself” in a book or a movie, or been “in the flow”, where it seemed like your body was on autopilot and was just doing its thing with no “you” controlling anything, then guess what. That was the experience of no separate self. Congratulations! On the flip side, make a mistake in front of an audience and you’ll quickly become very conscious of your self, i.e., self-conscious. Once you’ve seen that the sense of self comes and goes, it becomes easier and easier to see through the illusion.

Is it important to state the thoughts about the trigger? Or is it just as good to just go directly to the feeling of a situation? Sometimes the step of finding the thought feels extra.

Thanks for a great video! These "experiments" are needed, trying to use mental logic and reasoning to discover the illusion of self can't really work right, you can't use the same fiction to see through fiction, or can you? :)

Yea maybe. It's right here. Very simple. You look for a self? U can't find one? Can you just trust that without going into the mind looking for that profound shift? Is there a self in direct experience? Is the profoundness needed
