what about a futon cover to put the mattress inside? Many times they are made of a thicker fabric than even a comforter and won't add a lot of plush element to add to the height like a comforter would.

Love this! World Market has daybed covers that go over a twin mattress. They are upholstery fabric and would holdup better than typical bedding. We got a daybed for our loft area instead of a couch and using this for every day and switching to normal sheets if we have guests using the bed.
