Brazil Design History by Ray Burnette, Sadie Dalton, and Emily Flynn
This research is part of a project in Jamie Mahoney's Graphic Design history class. This is a description by the team from the proposal: During the art history classes we had during our freshman year, we remember learning a decent amount about the art made in Latin America before European colonization. However, as the years moved past that point, the amount of material shown dropped significantly. We initially started
looking for sources on graphic design in South America as a whole but decided to focus on Brazil so that a more streamlined timeline could be made. From what we have seen so far, we really enjoy the illustrative and colorful style that a lot of the Brazilian graphic art pieces have. Additionally, we were able to find some sources on typography and furniture design in Brazil as well. Regarding type, there seems to have been an early influence of European design ideas (such as the Bauhaus movement) and a general impact of colonization and politics on their designs, but there are now more modern typefaces that are taking inspiration from Brazil itself. The art styles as a whole are also very enjoyable to look at and would be fun to make a timeline about.

Brilliant content, Ty
Brilliant. Context and breadth in 38 minutes. Thank you.
Where can I find episode 6, featuring László Maholy-Nagy, that you mention at the end of episode 5?
I did not hear from Bela Uitz, Sandor Bortnyik, Vilmos Huszar, Lajos Kassak and Lajos Ebneth, pioneers in Constructivism !!
It is an outstanding lecture. Thank you for the new perspective on this period!
what do you think about all the black people in commercials today?
This video was phenomenal, thank you!
"Great documentary! I've always been intrigued by the pencil the person is using. Does anyone know the model or brand, and where it can be purchased? Thanks!"
"our country was occupied by the Nazis and the Soviet Union" to the bitсh who forgot history: your country WAS SAVED by the Soviet Union BE GRATEFUL now bitсh
Malevich should have gone into music.
Brilliant work! Correction : Mal - evich not Mal-ay-evich. 🙏
Thanks for posting this! This is one of the most comprehensive collections of the thoughts of this timeless genius that I’ve ever seen.
@14:08 in fact those are 6 huge belts, not 3. Really great video though!
thank you so much
Hey! Would you kindly tell me who that geisha woodprint is from? I've looked around quite a bit but can't find it anywhere. Thanks -- also for the informative lecture!
A couple of corrections: Malevich has only three syllables: PROUN has two syllables: PRO-UN.
is this for a class?? ive stumbled upon looking up mr moholy-nagy and his work. ive seen web du bois' early graphics but id never considered its existence prior to bauhaus and if i can extrapolate from this lecture, that it may have served to inspire some of the graphic languagr that bauhaus implemented. is there material related to if/how web du bois/american visual understandings, at the time, inspired europeans?
Hello! I've watched one of your videos and I was very much intrigued by your content; so I was wondering where I could find the course and instagram page you've mentioned? I haven't seen them in the about page and I tried searching, but I couldn't find them.:-( Thank you in advance and have a wonderful day!^0^/
You make good work.
great presentation! thank you for sharing.
amazing work, thank you so much !
Hey is this interview creative commons?
You make good art. Do more.
Thank you for this extraordinary informative presentation! That was the best about both topics i have found on here so far
Is this satire?
I'm curious, why do you believe this to be satire? Not trying to attack you or anything, I'm just genuinely curious.:-O I thought the video was very interesting and informative, but I wanted to know the opinion of others as well.
@@Glooomyy Well, the entire concept seems like it’s parodying the small group of people who fall for something this absurd. If you’re looking this hard to decolonize EVERYTHING… you should decolonize the world of yourself.
The Eames of 21st century. Simply beautiful.
pure gold
Thank you so much for this beautiful video!
Legend
RIP. Wise guy, and his wife too. I like Massimo's angle on the word modern. He was a no nonsense designer. Only thing I don't agree with him on is the topic of expressive typography.
Dead on!
Awesome. Nice work guys!
You guys have really taken it next level. Congrats Eric and Jamie!
