Cap de Creus to Setcases. Week Three of our Iberian Circumnavigation saw us heading back West on our KTM 790 and 1190 Adventure Motorcycles - and that meant getting high up into the old Pyrenean mountain trails, heralding the first of several days getting blown away by some stunning scenery!

This short video is really short on dirt riding (there's none) but long on history and romance - accurate or otherwise. The calm before the storm? You bet! Next up it's the Hannibal time as we cross the mighty Pyrenees. Meanwhile, hope you find this episode a fun watch. Cheers!

Nozzer, I and our KTM 1190 & 790 Adventure bikes survive a trip through an extraordinary and hellish dreamland, then ploughing on South through semi-desert scrubland on wonderful, endless dirt roads until we meet the Algarve's Atlantic coast where we enjoy a couple of days R & R before entering Spain and leg two of our excellent adventure. Nozzer & I point our KTM Motorcycles from Portugal's Belver to Moura through cork oak plantations, the wheat growing belt, vineyards and on into hot semi-desert scrubland. Riding heaven on some superb and varied trails, well suited to our bigger bikes. Reason eventually deserts me as the heat and Wild West movie scenery takes hold and I descend into a barely intelligible cowboy ramble, unfairly...

    Best tyre pressure review I've see so far. I take the 790 offroad with 1.8bar and on the road with 2.4bar. Taking the Michelin mini compressor in de side panel to get back from 1.8 to 2.4 bar in less than 5 minutes.

    The compression setting for the forks is also very important to the tyre, what to handle.

      Cheers Ian. Ah, we be country boys too (Lake District in our case), but we needed KTM Andorra for a wheel bearing plus to sit out some nasty weather, which turned out to be a good move. Agreed about those last lanes coming into Andorra - brilliant. Quite often I'll leave the camera off as it's an annoying distraction that I find can detract from the riding pleasure. Of course, the law of sod then usually ensures I've missed filming the best lanes plus all the interesting en-route events that happen. Hey ho. Episode 10 is in the making, I promise!

    3:35 I wonder if any rider would really notice the difference in how a bike handles because they've slightly increased the unstrung weight balancing the wheel. I have seen that you can get "lightweight" rimlocks so might be worth giving those a try.

    • @motonige
      @motonige Рік тому

      Front rim lock not so much affecting handling but creating horrible vibes (vertical oscillations) which cannot be completely dialled out even if a diagonally opposite second rimlock is added (although this can help to some degree). Vibration is always a problem with knobblies as they wear down and the effect is considerably worsened when a rimlock is present. I’ve now done away with the front rimlock on my dirt wheel set and it’s a lot better. I reckon you really only need one on the rear on this type of bike anyway unless you’re going at it hard offroad - rallying or whatever.

    • @motonige

      Really couldn't say but removing the db killer even with the cat still installed makes a fair difference. Other 790s I know that have been decatted are extremely loud using aftermarket cans with the db killers removed. I'm keeping my cat fitted because I do a lot of long distance and find too much noise increases fatigue quite significantly. My guess is you'd certainly want to keep the db killer in place. Upsetting the locals is never a smart move anyway, right?!

      Cheers Skelly. I also came from mousses on a 350 EXC, but for the 790 it's Michelin HD Tubes for me. They weigh a ton but I reckon a pinch flat on a tubeless set up could leave you well and truly stranded if you're out in the boondocks. Why did you remove the exhaust pre-silencer?

    • @motonige
      @motonige Рік тому

      Sorry RedRupert64, I'm not sure what you mean. There is only one silencer (the "end can"). The entire system comprises the following:- from the header (aka exhaust manifold) there is pipework (c/w lambda temp. sensor) leading (2 into 1) into a catalytic converter (cat). I decided to keep the cat so the bike remains UK road legal. After the cat we get to the parts I have replaced. These are the link pipe from the cat to the end can (the new end cannot be fitted using the original link pipe). The end can has a decibel killer (db killer) at its tip. Removal of the db killer makes the bike illegal for UK public roads and has little effect on weight, but it does release an even better sound than the conversion in its stock form. In standard factory form the sound of the bike is strangled and unpleasant to my ear and I find the end can to be a bit ugly and bulky. These were my main reasons for changing it and I wouldn't expect everyone to agree - it's all in the ear and eye of the beholder, right. Apologies if I haven't understood you or answered your question and thanks for watching.

    • @RedRupert64
      @RedRupert64 Рік тому

      @@motonige There are two silencers (or mufflers). The item within the swinging arm, behind the engine, as referred to by KTM as the pre-muffler. Having the pre-muffler allows the silencer to be smaller, as well as helping to centralise weight more effectively. I apologise to you, as it seems that you have left the pre-muffler intact. I agree with your reasons for doing so.

    • @motonige
      @motonige Рік тому

      @@RedRupert64 OK, I get what you mean now. That is the part I have called the cat. It will, of course, also act as a silencer by constraining the exhaust flow, but it is primarily where the catalytic converter is housed. There are several aftermarket exhaust systems for the bike which "de-cat" it by removing that box and replacing it with more simple pipework, allowing the bike to breathe more freely, weigh considerably less and make a heap of lovely extra noise like Arrow Exhaust's part number 71719M1. www.arrow.it/en/assembled/1662/KTM-790-Adventure-2019 KTM calling it a "pre-silencer" is just weird, but then that's KTM for you 😉. Anyway, I chose NOT to remove that part as I find really loud bikes very tiring on longer trips.

      Travel East from Keswick on A66. Turn right (South) at Threlkeld on to B5322. A mile or so down there on your left is the start of the Old Coach Road which is well signposted. Please close all gates on the route, slow right down for walkers etc. and be nice however scowly they might be! Tends to be a bit busy on sunny weekends but otherwise you'll have it pretty much to your self. Comes out at Lucy's Wood near Dockray which is on the A5091 road linking the A66 to Ullswater at Aira Force. All my bad techniques are 100% self-generated and the bike can in no way be blamed...ever! In fact, I'm so useless in respect of suspension settings that when the rear shock collapsed after about 700 miles from new (evidently a common fault with the 790 Adventure R model, permanently rectified with an under-warranty shock rebuild) the only effect I noticed was a loud and uncomfortable BANG every time it bottomed out. Handling wise it seemed pretty much OK to me!

    One of the practical upshot of the US Healthcare system is that if you need a set of crutches in order to make a bike stick, you needn't go out and break 2 vertebrae to get them. You can just rock up at the hospital with 50 bucks and get a pair. 😊

    • @motonige

      Fair enough, but one of the practical upshots of the UK system is that if you DO happen to snap a couple of vertebrae wings clean off, you don't need £500k's worth of insurance to get 'em fixed. In fact you don't need anything other than to be a UK citizen. Which comes in handy if you suffer a government hell bent on further disadvantaging anyone already disadvantaged...and for sure that's what we got over here right now!

    Yeah. Getting ready for my first big ride on my new to me 790r. Still has original karoo 3’s tubeless and they are on 34 & 34 psi. I will get my mates to wait and I will air down when we hit the dirt. Great commentary..👍👍

    I've ran my 890 with 29 psi up front and 25-28 at the rear, this combo has worked for me... Also why tubes when they come tubless?? No rim locks, no tubes, plug and go and in the most worst situation I keep a 21 " tube on the bike, there is nothing worse than fixing a puncture in the pissing rain 🤣

    • @motonige

      Hi James. I have tubes because I don't run with the original KTM tubeless rims. They are not strong enough to cope with some of the terrain I'm riding, bending easily when encountering technical, rocky trails which, of course, lets all the air out! Also, using narrower, stronger rims, built specifically for dirt riding, allows for a far greater choice of more aggressive dirt tyres (proper knobblies). Final reason is that I can keep the original KTM wheel set with road oriented tyres fitted when there's a tarmac-only trip planned and have a ready-to-go dedicated dirt set for when I want to hit the trails. The modification didn't come cheap, but it's great to have the options available. I no longer run a front rim lock but still have one in the back for obvious reasons. There's another (terrible) video on my channel which talks about these and other mods I've made and why. ua-cam.com/video/4zG__XCu0NE/v-deo.html Hope this explains my madness Cheers, Motonige

      Why thank you. Encouragement is everything! Rim lock now removed up front but retained in the rear for obvs reasons. Bouncing issue greatly improved, but always with worn knobblies it doesn't go away entirely until you cough up for some new rubber.

    I've run my 890 r's tires to 20psi and they generally work fine except when you hit rocks. Then you get a bent rim. So, I guess 20psi isn't the greatest. Grip is very good however. From now on I'm running maybe 26-28 psi so I can reduce the wheel dings. Mine are stock wheels and I'm learning they're not super tough. I carry a portable compressor for airing back up for pavement. Btw - love your commentary. Fun video and great writing. Really enjoyed it.

      Thanks Rusty. Your positive comments are very welcome indeed! Yeah, I ruined my bank account by purchasing a pair of very robust Haan Hubs (c/w cush drive) laced onto Excel rims via heavy duty spokes. These narrower beauties open up a wider range of proper and more aggressive road-legal dirt bike tyres and mean I can keep the standard rims (which appear to made of a soft, French cheese) on road (pavement) focussed tyres (I use Metzeler Tourance Next). The "dirt wheel" set uses rim locks (see video) but I have now removed the hardly necessary front one which has improved the bouncing problem that commonly accompanies a worn dirt tyre when used on the black top. The "dirt" rims are not tubeless so I use Michelin Ultra Heavy Duty tubes which appear to be made of rhinoceros hide. Even so, I wouldn't go down to 20psi unless I had some soft Sahara/Baja type deep sand or very wet mud to negotiate and once the obstacle was passed I'd be back up to 30psi again. We have a LOT of rocks where I live and pinch flats (snake bites) are real easy to acquire! Happy riding - Cheers, N.
