Nice video, I enjoy watching these. I love the huddle-up planning moment. Great stuff! Regarding your Learn to Play games, do you use the full D&D 5e rules, with every sourcebook available? Do you just let the players use the 5e Player's Handbook only? I'm considering running a Learn to Play game at my local library, and I'm thinking of just using the D&D Essentials Kit Rulebook, found in the Essentials Kit boxed set. I'm concerned that the full Player's Handbook might be a bit too intimidating for newcomers, and for a game with a limited time slot (the Library game would only run for 2 hours once a week). That Essentials Rule book is a really nice stripped-down but still robust version of the 5e rules. So I'm curious to hear exactly what D&D 5e rule books you use for your Learn to Play games.
Thank you! Play games, do you use the full D&D 5e rules, with every sourcebook available? A: I scale everything down, even the character sheet. Too much information can be distracting and overwhelming, I focus on building the character they want and the basic mechanics. I share places like DND Beyond and encourage them to buy the PHB from their local games store. Do you just let the players use the 5e Player's Handbook only? A: Most of my new players have no idea that a PHB exists lol. I ask simple, opener questions like "Where did you learn about dnd?" and "Has anyone played?.What was that like?" This gives me context for their experience and how I integrate it in my approach to teaching. Thanks for watching.
Great video Paul! Like hearing about others tables. I currently run a 1e group for 6-8 every other week. In person group that has been playing for over 6 years now. Long term campaign that recently finished the G series and are progressing through D1. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!!
Thanks and Wow! 6 years? That's great. Goals lol
I'm more a BECMI person myself, so Greyhawk is just of peripheral interest to me, but like you say, anything that gets new players to explore old campaign settings is a good thing. There are those who argue that one shouldn't get PDFs or POD of old TSR products like Greyhawk or Mystara at DriveThruRPG, as some of the money goes straight into WotCs coffers, but that would rob us of the opportunity to collect the very stuff their editors and sensitivity readers can't touch. One has to be real lucky to score original items at less than exorbiant prices on eBay, so there are few or no alternatives.
Omg I have to same ones
Hurray for us!
I doubt that any player with any knowledge of greyhawk back from the 80s will be an asset for new players as they will certainly make significant changes. they have to do it as the old greyhawk was a setting full of racial and religious conflict partly mirroring and taking inspiration from the real world but also introducing fantastic ones. with the new approach of "origins" or whatever the clad this in and the new approach of access to any class for anyone and flattening out the ability differences between said folks they take a lot of dynamics out. with them trying to pry away imported cliches of the real world like rhennee, baklunish, flan, etc due to mispresentation and cultural appropriation issues they eventually dismantle the Greyhawk. Therefore, I doubt that - if they keep up what they say they aim for - there will be a Greyhawk any older player knows nor would recognize. That being said, I don't understand the fuss. The charme of roleplaying games is that once I have a system I do not need the company anymore. Yeah, they can throw out another edition making high elves purble haired and introduce a shapgechanging genderfluid human or whatever pisses you of the most. This is not a tournament game. You don't need to use all what is thrown out. This about fun with your friends. And unless it is part of your fun to rant about WotC or any company this wasted playtime, in my opinion at least.
Well said.
Finally I see a good take on this.
Glad to be here lol. Thanks for watching.
Sure, WotC will do a great job...as long as you don't mind a black, non-binary Elminster: "I cast the spell of 1,000 pronouns!"
Glad I wasn't drinking anything when read this lol
Make it grim, make it dark, be afraid, IT IS GREYHAWK! DM the way Greyhawk was meant to be run.
They burned it down the first time, that's why they came out with "out of the ashes".
lol you're not lying.
I *WANT* to have a good attitude, but I have absolutely no doubt that the Wahtzee Nahtzees will screw it up. It's embarrassing to me that they are the stewards of D&D during it's 50th anniversary year. But truth be told, I don't pay much attention to it anymore. I've moved on to a better game in Castles & Crusades, which I run in Greyhawk.
Yeah, trying to stay positive. Just learning Castles and Crusades. Great stuff. Thanks for watching.
Interesting
I like your little binder. Where did you get it?
From Amazon. They come in different colors too. Here's a link amzn.to/4cBx8Xz
What are n00bish questions that you expect? I read through the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer when I first got into D&D and it had me pretty well informed on the setting.
Sure, people will read the DMG and get some of the background of Greyhawk but it would be cool if someone told them, "hey, if you want more information on Greyhawk, check out Living Greyhawk Gazetteer on Drivethurpg."
Thanks for the shout out Paul. All those resources are great. I'd add the various card decks that Phil Reed created.
Really helpful Shadowdark resources, Flint. Good finds! Thanks 👍🏼
Awesome stuff!! Tim's adventures are great! I would also recommend Thom Wilson's Throwi Games on drivethru. I've used both, and the players really had a good time. Keep up the great work!!
Thanks! I mentioned Throwi Games as a resource for the per-generated cards. The one I did not think I was properly pronouncing lol
Hi! Im a new greyhawk enjoyer. Ive been delving into greyhawk for the past 4 months or so and I love the setting. While wotc swooping in and bringing back greyhawk while im still dipping my toes in is very curious.
Welcome to Greyhawk! Curious indeed. Thanks for watching.
I hate when my players tickle my big bads to death. When the original Unearth Arcana introduced cantrips in the way back, players used them over and over again. The cantrips became a distraction. But I like the selection you provided. I think those could give the game a bit of depth (except for the penis marks).
Thanks. Yeah, my players are like that lol.
I'm running Shadowdark for youths at my library, having a blast with it. Just finished Hideous Halls of Mugdulblub, after the summer we're doing Ravenloft!
Fantastic! Hideous Halls of Mugdulblub is fun and weird.
@@FlintFireforge I really enjoyed it, I have never considered how much room for social encounters dungeons can hold, this really made me rethink how I view dungeoncrawling!
I just got this and the random tables book amd I absolutely love them both! The art is amazing and the information is straight forward and organized. I enjoy the way they separate dm notes and read aloud info.
Yes! All of this.
Very good advice. Great example. I believe one of the best ways to get players to react to a villain is to have them act unexpectedly. To build a certain idea of what kind of person in their mind then kick the presumption over. I love that kind of layering in a big bad guy or even one of the lesser bad guys.
Agreed, I think of Harvey Dent from the Dark Knight, someone the players trust, corrupted, over time doing unexpected things, like flipping a coin to decide someone's fate.
Please don't use sexy. 😂 Looks like a great time. I need to make that trip one year.
Ha! I most likely not use the word sexy, but think of the thumbnail!! 🤣
Great recap! It was my first as well. I left with a bunch of loot too. First time playing Boot Hill, Hyperborea, and Dragonslayer. Beyond the new games and loot, it was great meeting a ton of creators, writers, and artists. My secondary goal was to get my books signed. Ended up with almost 20 books signed that I brought with me.
Wow! 20 books!? That's fantastic!
Great video. Just started to DM for my Support Group. I do Support Work for teens and young adults and so far they absolutely love our DnD sessions. There is some great tips in the video, and i do try to be as much proactive as i can be for each session. I have still ALOT to learn, but as long as we all are having fun that is the main goal for me as DM. Thanks, Dave
Thanks Dave! Those teens and young adults are lucky to have an awesome, proactive, DM. :)
This a terrific Con review. Your best video, yet! Thanks Paul.
Thanks man! What did you think about the Crit Happens Zine?
Living in Houston, I’ve never attended North Texas Con. Might go next year. Love to check it all out and play some games. 👍🏼
Aw no! Done in with a technical difficulty on the intro. C’est la guerre mon ami! 😂
I had dreams of getting to NTRPG Con this year, dashed upon the financial reality of my situation. Thanks for showing us all the loot, games you participated in and your zine. Gabor Lux is an author, not a place - does good work - very old school in style. I like the simple design of your zine, more words - less art, is a design aesthetic I like. Any chance of some non-alcoholic beverages on that tavern menu? Not every character wants to get liquored up.
You can order virgin alternatives of each. :)
This might be the most well balanced of the subclasses so far. It feels like a fully fleshed out published one. This is very cool and I'd definitely allow this at my table!
Thank you for the advice. Been trying to keep an eye out or maybe a hand for suggestions. Sorry I had insert a bad dad joke lol
bad jokes are welcome, and expected, here :)
Hey, you are the giveaway winner!! Send an address to therpgreview@gmail.com and I will get it out to you. There is a video coming out on Monday, but I forgot to announce the winner in it so, keep watching and I'll make sure to give you a shout out.
Been looking for advice for spicing up villans!
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
Make the baddies even badder!!
Congrats to the winner Agreed, all those worlds should have heroes. Yes the bad guy needs to be bad.
Love the idea of characters from different worlds banding together to take on Vecna. And I can't agree more about the power of the scene that introduces important characters. Great video again Flint!
Your resumée is impressive! I really hope more people learn how good TTRPGs are.
Thanks!
Best watched with sound off,..the dude draws endless circles on the pages with his finger and states the bleedin obvious. Hand dancing rating: Extremely high.
🤣🤣🤣 Duly noted. Thanks for the new channel idea, "The Hand Dancing DM". Thanks for watching.
You used "the Dragon WotC"? When you could have used "Hasbro-deus"!?!
True lol
That was such a fun session!
Agreed! And thanks for watching.
Risk it for the biscuit! I like that one the most. Though my favorite proactive thing a player does for my games is take notes. More than ask questions. More than roleplay. Taking notes is my biggest like a player can do.
Great addition! Thanks for watching!
Very much enjoy when players engage me as the GM. Surprise me with choices and ideas. Already have a copy of the book so no need to put me in the drawing.
I love to collab with players as well.
It's funny; I've been roleplaying for years, yet I so often forget that my GM wants to know if I have any ideas for my character--family, background, hooks, pointy bits to cause me trouble. I think sometimes I assume if I overload them with plans for my character, it may be too restrictive or overwhelming/annoying. I think the healthy balance I've found is to couch it in terms of "So this is what I was thinking... but you can do what you'd like with it." That gives them flexibility to work with my ideas and incorporate what works for their campaign... while also leaving room for them to pleasantly surprise me with fun twists I didn't know about!
Sounds like a great plan. Thanks for watching.
All good tips! I'm torn between roleplaying and risk it for the biscuit!
