Amber Bennison Art - Gel Printing and Collage
Australia
Приєднався 21 жов 2024
I’m excited to share my passion for gelli plate printing and collage art with you. Here I create unique papers that can be used for mixed media projects. Think scrapbooks, cards, decoupage and my favourite - collage.
Painted paper collage is a fun art form. Handmade papers become the palette. They are torn and glued to create images that uniquely capture the subject, be it nature, portraits or landscapes. Text, patterns, photo transfers, and ephemera are woven in, to add depth and texture, all whilst indulging a love of colour, detail, and a touch of quirkiness!
Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting your creative journey, I’m glad you’re here. You’ll find plenty of tips, techniques, and inspiration to ignite your imagination. Collage art is a fun and personal way to express yourself. But warning - gel printing is addictive!

Thanks Amber, your videos are great, so easy to follow, you make it look easy. Love your Kookaburra painting too😍
Great video Amber, thank you. I like the idea of pressing the foliage & storing them in a folder. Looking forward to building on these basic skills. Another stunning collage too, WOW!😍
Thanks so much for this. I really appreciated the clear explanations around letting the paint dry in between layers. And also now I understand much better how to use the plate! Also I love using a book for the excess paint. I watched your video using the plant as a mask and that was also very helpful.
Thank you. ❤love the effect. Wrong time of year here for grass seeds but I could try it with leaves.
Fantastic, so much easier to understand watching you. I have never let a layer dry out on the gel plate, so ai am going to give it a try. I live in Hawai’i so it tends to be hot and dry, or wet and cold as I live at 2,300’ elevation. I will see…
Hi Pricille. So glad you came and watched. Yes, in Perth we have hot and dry too. It can be a problem! Mainly because that first layer dries on the plate before you get your plants down and do the first paint removal. You have to get everything lined up and work quick. It’s the same with that final pick up layer. You don’t want it too thick. But it needs to be a fully wet layer when you put your final paper down. Otherwise it won’t collect all the layers off the plate. (Think of it as gluing the dried image onto the paper). If you find you have problems with everything drying too quick, then you could try Golden Open Paints which have a slower drying time. Or I read that some people add a drop of retarder or glazing medium to slow down the drying time. I’d love to see your results. Tag me if you post in our group, so I don’t miss it! Have fun. 🤩
Astonishing! Brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻 I don’t have a gel plate yet but watching this (after seeing your FB post) certainly inspires me!! I’ve only seen a couple of videos so far - this one and one by Lavinia using ink from pads I think - but the finished results are just stunning. Thanks v much for the video. Feedback - as you ask - sometimes voice is bit muffled. You could zoom out slightly to show entire plate. Name the products you’re using…brand etc (not just colours) and where you can purchase them..? Qs - could you do this on to card rather than thin paper if you wanted to make a card with it? What sort of card? Is there a difference between the two brayers? So even if you dry the paint, when you put another layer over the top, it reactivates it?? Is that just with acrylic paint or also with water reactive ?
Hi Gill! I’m glad you are inspired. Gel printing is great fun (and a little bit addictive - beware 😆). The paint I was using is acrylic paint. There really is too much to say in a comment here. People find out what they love over time. However, in summary, really, you can use any! I mainly use Golden Fluid Acrylics. It’s a professional artists paint and is beautiful to use with lovely bright colours and great lightfastness for my collage work. But it a bit pricey. I also use Amsterdam standard, and Liquitex Basics especially for demos. The Amsterdam and Liquitex are both a good medium budget ranges. Lots of people use them with great results on the gel plate. But if you have already got acrylic paints then try them out first. You can buy all of them online or in art shops. Yes you can print on card or paper. A smooth surface will pick up the most detail. People often print on Bristol Card if they are making prints for framing. A good card weight might be 250 - 300 gsm. Really it’s personal preference on the quality of paper you want to get. Also some people print on paper then mount their favourites on ready made cards. You’ll find that not all prints come out as you want, so that process allows you to select the best for mounting. Stay tuned and I post a more of a beginners tutorial with some of this information included. Sorry that the sound wasn’t 100%. I may need to invest in a better mic. You should definitely give gel printing a go! 😊
Oh - and no difference between the brayers. 6” soft rubber brayer is good to start. Speedball brand is great but you can find cheaper. Two brayers are ideal - one for warm colours and one for cool colours. 👍
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these prints! 🤎🌾 Beautiful work.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked them. Stay tuned for more! 😍
Thank you so much for clearly showing this process!
You are welcome! I’m glad that you found it easy to follow. Have fun giving it a go. 😊
Great effect
Thank you. Yes, you can really see the weave.
Very nicely explained. Will try this. Thank you
Hi Joan. Great! Thanks for the feedback. I hope you enjoy trying it out 🤩
The key to this is also your plants you have used, small leaves... Will have to look for something similar in my area
Hi Karen. Yes I really like the effect of the fine grasses. But I also did some with ferns that came out really well. I loved the detail of their leaf shape. The technique accentuated it. Also look out for other weeds. They are often fine and spindly. Cow parsley shape can work very well. Maybe remove some of the flower stems first. And then press it under a pile of books until it lays really flat. I can feel another tutorial coming on… 😆
Great tutorial Amber
Thanks for watching. I hope you found it helpful. 😊 👍
Amber - your art is amazing. Loved the video- very inspirational!
Thank you so much. I’m glad that you found it inspiring! 😍
Wow this whole video is jaw dropping 😮. Your collage girl is absolutely incredible! It's blowing my mind because of how much detail you've put into it! So beautiful it's stunning.
Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. I’m glad you like the detail. It’s one of those pieces… the more you look the more you see. The whole process of finding that perfect snippet of ephemera is both engaging and satisfying. 🌺
Thanks for this video. I'll check out your other ones. Your prints are so beautiful ❤️
Thanks for watching Cynthia. I hope you find them helpful. ♥️
Great tutorial. Very clear thanks
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for your feedback. Have you given it a go yet? 😊
So happy to find you! I have been playing with fabric on the gel plate and loving the look!❤
Wonderful! I’m so glad you are giving the techniques a go. It always amazes me how much detail can be transferred. A little bit of gelli magic! 🪄 ✨
Hi Amber! I’m commenting before I continue watching. I remember the post in the facebook group someone asking about the white shape. Still has me baffled because I thought it would come from the original white paper. Can’t wait to see the process and allow my brain cells to process it lol. Thanks for sharing. I love your new channel and have watched your initial few videos. Keep them coming.. I’m a beginner but you are really inspiring me to stop procrastinating❣️😂🎨
It’s lovely to discover you’re from Australia too!! Hello from Sydney!🐨💚💛Thank you so much for sharing this process…. I have a grasp on it now.. so the final layer re activates the previous dry layers of paint so that the mask, in this cast the final plant comes away with the layers of paint stuck to it! Wow cool!! Looking forward to your next videos! PS: very cute editing with text notes and use of the (appropriate😆🥰) song overlay to avoid listening to hairdryer sound. These little things make the learning experience so much better. Nice that you took on board what a couple of viewers suggested🙏🏼💙
Teehee - Thanks for noticing the music. It made me giggle (It’s the little things in life!) 😆. Ah you are in Sydney. Nice to welcome a fellow Aussie! I’m glad the video has helped you to see the process. Sometimes figuring out gel prints can really give you a sore head! I hope you give the technique a go. 👍
@@AmberBennisonArtI’ll definitely try, looking forward to it🌷
Very nice, Amber! The weave of the hessian itself and the ribbon weave are both really effective textures. Where are you from? …just noticed you mentioned Bunnings in a reply. I’m in Australia and we love Bunnings!😊
Hi again Erica. I’m across in WA. How about you? I’m glad you liked the video. That hessian weave makes a really interesting print doesn’t it! The print has gone into my stash. I’ll be interested to see what it becomes in the future. Everyone finds their perfect place in a collage sooner or later! 😉 🤭
@@AmberBennisonArtI’m from Sydney. I’ve never been to WA but I would truly love to… so much natural beauty. We recently had family friends moved there… they absolutely love it. I’d like to see where the weave print ends up too😍
I’m a new sub from Australia… I’m so happy to have come across your 😃💛GREAT BRAND NEW CHANNEL🥂💫 …Congratulations on your first video!! and I can’t wait to folllow your videos and learn more from you. Your teaching manner is very pleasant, clear and and engaging and your work is great. Your girl collage is so gorgeous!! WoWzA😍😍😍. I really like how you use an old book to roll off excess paint! …Fantastic idea!!!! Best wishes to you for abundant success in your creative endeavours🌷💕
Oh Erica! What lovely feedback, and ‘hello’ to a fellow Aussie! 😍 I’m so glad that you found my channel. It was a little daunting to start, but I’m so glad that I took the plunge. Yes, those old books make really great roll off sheets. Sometimes I also build them up with more gel printed layers or stencil work. The great thing is, that old paper tears really nicely for using in collage work. Thank you so much for your positive wishes. 😊
@@AmberBennisonArtmy pleasure, I’m so glad you overcame your hesitation and started your videos! Really great! I’d love to see a demo of the way you use the roll off paper if you’d like to one day😊
Great first video. Love your work and will be following you to try out some of your techniques. 😊
Thanks so much! 😊. I hope you have fun.
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing ❤
Thank you, and you are welcome! ♥️
Wonderful video, thanks for sharing! I especially love you showing how you matched up the different colored prints on the dress to continue the pattern in places, such a great idea and it looks beautiful. I do agree with the earlier comment about eliminating the blow drying by either muting and doing a voice over or fast forward or cut it out all together. Not a huge deal, it just will keep the viewer more engaged, I muted the video when you were blow drying since it does bother me. I also wanted to ask, did you paint the girl first and then add the collage or do you go back and forth? Thanks, again!
Hello, thanks for your thoughtful feedback. Appreciated. Yes, point taken on the hair dryer. I will fix that in the future. 👍 I’m glad that you liked my pattern matching. Heheh - sometimes it’s fun to indulge a love of detail! 🤭. With regards to my collage technique, yes, I do paint the image first, and then I collage on top of it. I intend to teach my process in the future,, so please do join my newsletter above, if you are interested in staying in touch. I hope you give the printing ideas a go. Thanks again. 😊
These are lovely Amber, looking forward to trying it out
Thank you Caroline. I hope you have fun giving it a go. 😍.
I really love that your video wasn't too long winded and waffley ! I don't watch anything longer than 20 minutes these days as I just don't have the time (or attention span !) . The Audio could be sharper but it wasn't awful.... I have subscribed x
Hi Claire. I really appreciate your feedback. I agree with you about the length of videos! 🤭. I was conscious to edit out most of the waffle 😆 so I’m glad that it seemed an ok balance. Hmmm - not sure how to improve the sound. I will have to look into that. Maybe a separate mic is required. 🤔. Lovely to have you as a subscriber. I’m always happy to take feedback so we can make this channel great over time. Happy printing! 😍
Agree that it’s good because it’s short & to the point.
Are you using the same piece of paper for each lift? It isn’t clear in the video.
Hi Annie, I’m glad you asked for clarification. So the papers I use at around the 3:31 and 4:02 time stamps, are NOT part of the final gel print. They are separate papers. Their purpose is to remove the paint around the seed head so that the image stands out and the final paint layer can show through. You can remove more or less of this background paint, depending on the look you want in your final print. Whatever paint is left on the plate at this stage, will be the top layer of the final print. If you look closely, you will see that I removed most of the paint from the top centre, but left more down the bottom of the print. This gave the colour graduation in the final print. When I lifted the seed heads up you can see that the paint trapped underneath is the image of the grasses. (This is called a ‘ghost print’). Once this is dry I put on the final paint layer which will become the background. I pick up all these layers using a fresh clean sheet of paper. By the way, the sheets I used to remove the paint from around the seed heads are not wasted. I continue to use them in this way. The layers build up and you end up with another interesting paper that you can use as a background or a collage paper. Sorry for such a long answer. you may have been looking for a simple yes/no! 😆. In which case the answer is simply NO! (Heh heh - a bit late if you have already got this far!). Does that help?
This is so good, Amber! Thanks for sharing your process.
You are so welcome! I”m really glad you found it useful. 😊
Thank you so much. Wonderful.
No problem. I hope you give it a go. 👍
Happy I found your channel, and I just subscribed. I love gelli printing with plant material. It’s one of my favorite things to do. I typically use leaves so I really want to try it with grasses. You got such beautiful results! Thank you for sharing. And I’m looking forward to more of your videos.
Hello. Thanks for commenting. Yes, the grasses were really fun to play with. I loved their fine detail. And they are surprisingly robust on the gel plate. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I best get on and make some more! 😊
Awesome, always wanted to try this! Thank you!☺️
Oh great. You definitely should give it a go. It’s a fun process with cool 😎 results!
Love this. Thank you. The video is awesome!!
Thanks for the feedback Mary. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. 😍
Your soft voice and precise use of words make it very easy to listen and understand your instructions. Thank you. Gel plate printing, mixed media collage and giving charity shop items a second life are all dear to me. Oh thank you Nancy. You have given me a real boost with your lovely comment. It sounds like we love the same things 😍. It would be lovely to see your work sometime too. I’m so happy to be finding my people! I am looking forward to making more content and connecting again. Keep in touch.
@@AmberBennisonArt Will do, with pleasure 😘
🥰
Love these! You did not specify, but I assume your hair dryer was set on COOL, right?
Yes, good point. You do have to be careful not to overheat your gel plate, as it might damage it. So the cool setting is best. My hairdryer does not have a cool setting 😬 so I just keep it moving quickly around. Thanks for the pick up. I’ll try to mention that in future videos. 👍
I am going to follow your techniques with cedar leaves. I will tag you. ❤
Oh brill! I’m glad it gave you an idea. I can’t wait to see your results 😊👍

Lovely video and demo! And I love your art by the way 🤩
Thanks for watching. I’m so glad you liked it. 😊
What paper are you using?
Hi Sharon, For this tutorial I’m just using standard printer copier paper. It’s a great starter paper. It’s cheap, easy to get, easy to use and has good results on the gel plate. However, for my collage work I also use all sorts of other papers: eg Japanese rice papers, deli paper, wet strength tissue, old books etc. They all have their own characteristics. Perhaps I should make a tutorial on this?
@@AmberBennisonArtthis would be a great topic for a video.
So engaging!! I had to stay to the end!
Oh I’m glad you hung around. I hope you liked the collage ideas!
So fascinating to watch!! great technique!
Thanks Colleen, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Great technique, where’s would I find those hessian strips
Thanks Sam. Generally you can get hessian in craft or fabric shops. It may be sold as a larger piece that you could cut into strips yourself. The hessian I used, actually came on a roll. I bought it in a DIY Hardware store (Bunnings). It was sold for securing trees to stakes! So you’ll probably find it in garden centres too.
