How to design like Vionnet: a master study in timeless fashion
After reading every Madeleine Vionnet book I could find, here is my master study on Vionnet. This is a reference I created primarily for my own fashion design studies: I wanted to understand her thought process and techniques, and why her work is so timeless.

What I wish someone had told me after I finished school.... It's never too late to start investing in your brain, and it's also the most rewarding way to spend your time. Study the masters, and study the people that inspired them. This is how I do self-directed learning. I hope this video inspires you to go to the library and find something that sparks your interest 𝜗𝜚

This is my first forensic crochet project .... that means looking at the reference photos and testing to see what kind of stitches and yarn and hook size were used to construct the original garment. I wanted to make it my own, so I did black instead of the original brown. Thank you to @carolinesclosetplz for curating many beautiful reference photos of Caroline Polachek's wardrobe, including the...
This looks like fun! I want to create couture evening gowns and structured lingerie looks. Cant wait to do research like this format
I mean yes bias is beautiful but it will eventually sag. A short term solution.
Thats true! Part of the process was pre-sagging the fabric. Vionnet would hang it up for several days and let the bias "do its job" (sagging) before cutting the pattern pieces. I hope to see an original dress one day in real life and see how this method has held up over the last century.
Thank you for highlighting the great Vionnet! Hard to overstate her influence on modern formal fashion. Her influence can still be seen on red carpets everywhere. She and Claire McCardell are two of my favorite 20th century designers. They created for women's bodies and women's lives.
You inspired me to start looking into Claire McCardell! The Monastic dress is brilliant - i love the sunray pleating
Wow that was so interesting thank you for sharing your research!
<3 love your slow fashion videos!
Kinda scared to map mine, not sure how to even start 🙂↔️
@@ShesChic it’s… strange to explain because you have to close the thinking department in your brain. Ultimately it’s an exercise of your own intuition. Look through magazines and pick out things you like, that give you a “yes” feeling or a spark that stands out to you. Put them together in a way that pleases you and feels “right” - it may take 20 arrangements til you like it! Or maybe you get it right the first time. And only at the end will you look at the finished collage and understand what it all means :)
I’ve not even heard of Mm Vionnet! How wonderful you’ve shared with us. These style takeaways we can apply to life, not just clothes. Thank you.
She’s a huge inspiration to me - thanks for tuning in :)
Such an underrated designer, great analysis 🙌
It’s crazy how ahead of her time Vionnet was - Galliano and Balenciaga and many others were inspired by her. Like Van Gogh I think we will start to truly understand her work centuries later
Can u please please style them.. btw these are beautiful
