    A concerto for our Age. Opens with a deep, sobering, jolt of the full string sections, setting the mood: "This is not going to be 'Yankee Doodle Dandy." The piano lines are often harsh, and even "muted" near the end. But some sweet, melodic lines make us aware that we can be childlike. Overall, this piece makes its point. Folds has knelled the significance of our telling times. We are not headed for a triumphant coda. He brings it to an appropriate end. IMHO, someone had to say this, and Folds did it. In spite of its little compositional flaws (all new composers have ), it is an astonishing start, with a promisingly bright future for Mr. Folds. The orchestra's performance showed an excellence "beyond its years."

    The second movement is just gorgeous. And I feel sorry for people who, beyond not enjoying it (which is fine!), feel the need to convince everyone that our taste is crap or we're poorly educated. Personal taste is personal, and some people who have spent their lives studying music truly seem to dislike most of it, which makes me wonder if it was worth it. 👀

    It's still all on one chord though... not very imaginative harmony wise. But the orchestra is constant and ends up improvising by its own which is nice.

      Nope. A talented director can work with any high school band anywhere. If this doesn't ring true for your high school, get a new director.

    • @5ammy13
      @5ammy13 2 роки тому

      @@andrewbrown6272 lol that might be true usually, but the way Ben is conducting here, do you really think it would have worked with a high school band? The orchestra not only is able to take his directions, but also work together. Especially when he just says, you know what to do or gives them the choice to add whatever that want. I am a 100% sure this would not have worked with a high school orchestra. The orchestra he's working with are professionals and it's full of very talented musicians who can adapt, learn quickly and work together. If it wasn't for this, what Ben did would not have worked.

    • @5ammy13
      @5ammy13 2 роки тому

      @@andrewbrown6272 and also there's a lot more than directing. In my opinion the most important job in a high school job is arranging and orchestrating. They have the most crucial job because their outputs are what usually goes into the sheet music that the kids will play. Orchestrators must know the limits of their orchestra, especially in terms of Brass, who always sound not in tune. You need to rearrange sections and parts to make it easier for the kids to stay in tune and in time, ensure to stay in an easy range that they can play, ensure there are no complicated articulations for the children. If the Orchestrator or arranger doesn't adapt a piece to their orchestra, no matter how good the director is, it just won't work. The kids have a talent ceiling, and it's up to the orchestrator or arranger to ensure the music is arranged in a way that it fits their talent. So I think a director or conductor is not as important as the orchestrator or arranger.

    It's a nice piece. And for the critics who complain that there is not enough novelty a) he is a young composer and b) who cares? There are genuine moments of glory and individuality. He created something that is true and beautiful - not perfect, but worthy. Keep your eyes on this young man. He is already in a league with Chris Theofinidas and the rest of the fine Atlanta School. We live in glorious times. The atonal freak show winter of the last century is fading fast in the rear view mirror and our collective sense of listenability is slowly fighting its way back into in the classical realm. Whether Young Master Folds turns out to be a crocus, azalea, or an evergreen remains to be seen, but in the meantime - enjoy the promise of Spring.

      Atonality hasn't gone anywhere, thankfully. It's been integrated into pop, hip-hop, videogame soundtracks… The fact that you don't enjoy it means very little in the grand scheme of things-or was explored for a reason, great works came out of that, and it gave all current musicians interesting tools.

      Are you simply judging this piece on compositional skill? sure it's only a high school skill piece, but I still think this piece is awesome. Un-technical songs can be good too, do you think he was trying to be on par with Rachmaninov?

    • @CzernyPianoInstitute

      CriterionCafe he had to have at least least saturated himself with a ton of John Williams....or Hans Zimmer. I applaud him on his attempt, but the outcome is a piano concerto, without the piano in it.
