2019 Daytona 24 Hour Race - Fan Experience
I threw together some clips and pics to create a quick look at just some of what there is to experience at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. The 2019 race had a little bit of everything: sun, overcast, warm temps, cold temps, and some of the heaviest rain the race has seen in recent history. This race is one of my favorite sporting events that I’ve ever been to and I’d highly recommend it if you’re interested.

    Quick question, what size TV are you using with this setup?

    • @jeffyspeed8589
      @jeffyspeed8589 6 місяців тому

      The TV in the video is a 55 in. Samsung QLED. I no longer use that and wouldn't recommend that size unless you can get it closer to your face. In this video I have since learned that I was too far from the screen. I subsequently went to VR and then to a 49 in. curved monitor that was only about 18 in. away from my eyes.

    My first “rig” was made using an IKEA chair like yours and some wood….. it totally crippled me! Ruined my back so bad that I had to stop racing for 3 months. However that gave me the time to do it properly, custom designed and built aluminium profile rig that I still use 7 years later( with some modifications) do not go down this path!!!! If your spending £1000 pounds on electronics or £2000 with a pc then budget 4-6 hundred pounds on some profile and do it properly

    I have an idea that could potentially enhance the experience even further. What if you put 4 aluminium poles around the seat and used wire rope or strong rope to hang black curtains from them or 2 wall hooks? This could create a more immersive environment and add to the feeling of being inside a cockpit. Additionally, adding 2 small speakers behind your head on the left and right sides could give you a great surround sound experience. You could attach these speakers to the poles as well. I hope this idea helps! You can also go for extendable poles and 2 mini wall hooks if you want to be more discreet.3 curtains and 4 poles seems easy and fast to disassemble quickly.

    At the start of the video you say the rig is a little shaky. Can you identify the weaknesses?

    • @jeffyspeed8589
      @jeffyspeed8589 Рік тому

      For sure. In the initial design I used a single 3/4 inch plywood to mount the wheel to. I have since doubled that and have two 3/4 inch plywood sheets that I screwed together to add rigidity to the mounting surface. Additionally in the original design I mounted that same top plate directly down into the vertical studs with wood screws. I have since added two 2x4 rails on the underside of the the two 3/4 inch table surface I described above. The table top is screwed onto these 2x4s which are on the bottom and pushed to the outer right and left edges of the table top from the perspective of the chair. They run parallel to the long side of the frame. I used three large bolts with washers and nuts to mount these 2x4s through the outer face of the vertical studs. Originally the vertical stud was connected to the bottom frame rails using wood screws. I replaced the wood screws with the same nut/bolt/washer described above. These changes resulted in virtually zero flex in the system. I still use it to this day. Planning on upgrading the wheelbase to a direct drive system and I’m fully confident that this rig will hold up without issue. Since the video here I’ve upgraded to a Fanatec CSL Elite wheelbase that has more torque than the thrust master shown. And I have no issues. Ultimately I did replace the Poang chair with a racing seat, but that was primarily so I could attach a bass transducer. The Poang chair does have flex, but it never bothered me. You can insert 2x4s between the chair base and arms to eliminate that if you want. Hope this helps and good luck!

    I just did your build and it came out awesome. Did a few tweaks I was using scrap wood I had in the shed. Uprights are much thicker so I did not need the green bracers. Did you know a standard gaming chair if you take it of the swivel and stand fits right inside the poang chair? So I have the lumbar support feel of and expensive rig seat with poang chair position which I love.

    Awesome! I have the cheaper version of the Poang as a PC chair. My friend added a piece of wood to the left arm and mounted a monitor arm on it. He also created a keyboard and mouse tray that locks into the arm. It's epic. I barely use it these days though so I'm thinking it's the perfect start of an epic sim setup! Your setup is great, but the distance from the screen would drive me nuts. So my chair already gets rid of that issue.

      That sounds really cool! And you’re definitely right about the screen. I ultimately upgraded to PC and VR. But that’s been one of the best things about this rig - which is still my setup - that it’s easy to modify and upgrade! A while back I swapped the Poang chair for a racing bucket, not because there was any issue with the Poang chair, but I really wanted to install a bass transducer and it transfers more energy to the racing seat. I’ve used multiple wheels and pedals with this rig, different monitor configurations, PC, PS4. I’ve moved it from the original apartment to two different houses and it still works great!

    Moin, you made a fine RIG there I'm more of a hobby at ACC at the Series X and just looked at what material had accumulated over the years. I built my RIG completely out of wood and this is what it looks like now. It only has to be filled and then painted black with orange accents. However, it has become quite massive (1.72 mx 1.20 m). I built in the Gamechair as only I am allowed to sit in it. So he didn't have to go on any rails. Unfortunately, the options on the XBox are very limited. I took the 3 vibrators + control from an old massage mat, screwed 2 of them into the seat and the third to the pedals. Connected via the subwoofer of the Gamechair. Not as optimal as on a PC, but the result is astonishingly good. Engine vibrations, curbs or gear changes are simulated well. I can proudly say that I have made something fantastic for me out of "junk in the basement". Except for a few corners, I had everything lying around. I think it's great when someone thinks about it and builds something for themselves. Anyone can buy ... 😄 Definitely a nice video of you with a great result. So, as it was, my parents had my Poang chairs at their house and were not using them. I decided to modify my rig to incorporate the Poang as well (it had been an old office/computer chair). I would have liked to try this rig, but I already made one with a fixed seat. If I can find a free (or almost free) Poang chair, I'll try to modify mine to be more like yours. Mine is actually pretty good, but I would prefer to have the movable (and removable) seat. I used to have two Poang chairs, but I returned them or something; I can't remember. Like many others here, I am also 5'7" and have the T-150. I was very interested in knowing how you attached the pedal stand to the wood panel. I guess you used the two screw holes. I might disassemble mine and mount them inverted even though they work fine as they are (slightly inclined)

I have been using it for 10 years and it has performed faultlessly, and I have a load cell brake system. Hi man I have one question about the poang chair : If you brake is the chair moving?

    • @jeffyspeed8589
      @jeffyspeed8589 3 роки тому

      Hey - the Poang chair did move a bit. I have the FANATEC Clubsport V3 load cell pedals and under heavy braking the chair sinks back a tiny bit. If you’re a bigger guy it might be more noticeable. There is an easy fix by cutting a 2x4 to fit between the base and armrest on each side. This limits the movement significantly. I used the Poang chair for close to 3 years and loved it. Ultimately I decided to upgrade to a racing seat because it did add a bit of rigidity, but also it made the rig look and feel a tad more pro and that’s what we all want at the end of the day right!? Haha I used the same rig as my other video and just added some 2x4 cross members on the back then mounted the sliders for the racing seat to that.

  • @pearlio7297

    • @jeffyspeed8589
      @jeffyspeed8589 3 роки тому

      Hey! I sure am! I’ve made some modifications along the way, instead of the wheel plate being mounted to a crossmember and that cross member being screwed into the uprights I changed it to two top plates with rails along the bottom on each side of the plate (running parallel with the rig) and then used 3 bolts and nuts per upright into those rails. All of this was to add more rigidity and reduce the little bit of flex that there was. There is none now. I’ve upgraded to PC and use VR and iRacing also use Fanatec wheels and pedals. I was using a thrust master wheel/pedal, ps4, tv. I also very recently mounted an automotive racing bucket seat to the rig and moved the ikea chair back into the living room. It worked great and I never had a problem with it, but I really wanted to add a bass transducer to the setup and it made more sense to go this route. So bottoms line yes this design is still working and is easy to modify and improve. I still use it and still recommend it! Best of luck!

      if you watch at about 6:01 I show where I put the screws in. It ends up being about 45 screws. I later changed the design of the top plate where the wheel mounts and I'd recommend if you are going to build this you do the same. Rather than the 2x4 under the top plate going from side to side and being screwed in, I changed it to a 12" 2x4 running parallel to the long side of the rig on each side. I used 3 large bolts with washers and nuts to attach these to the uprights. I then mounted the wheel plate to these two 2x4's. This adds a significant amount of vertical rigidity to the wheel.

If your angle ends up a little differently than mine, it will be fine. Just try to stick to the overall form and dimensions and it will be sturdy enough. Luckily this doesn’t really have to support much of a load and is difficult to mess it up. Just take your time and make sure things are tight and you’ve eliminated as much flex and wobble as you can.
