Best Inexpensive DIY Sim Racing Rig with IKEA Chair

- I will walk you through the steps I took to build my sim racing rig. Use for iracing, gran turismo, project cars or any other racing game or simulator. This is an easy DIY project that just about anyone with an electric drill can complete in a couple of hours.
That's gonna be it. Received my g923 today. Just writing down the shopping bill and adjust your dimensions to the metric system. I do have the exact chair already here. Perfect. Half the fun is building the rig, the rest is using it. Thx again!
The leather wrap is a nice touch. Great idea!
Moin, you made a fine RIG there
I'm more of a hobby at ACC at the Series X and just looked at what material had accumulated over the years.
I built my RIG completely out of wood and this is what it looks like now. It only has to be filled and then painted black with orange accents.
However, it has become quite massive (1.72 mx 1.20 m). I built in the Gamechair as only I am allowed to sit in it. So he didn't have to go on any rails.
Unfortunately, the options on the XBox are very limited.
I took the 3 vibrators + control from an old massage mat, screwed 2 of them into the seat and the third to the pedals. Connected via the subwoofer of the Gamechair. Not as optimal as on a PC, but the result is astonishingly good. Engine vibrations, curbs or gear changes are simulated well.
I can proudly say that I have made something fantastic for me out of "junk in the basement". Except for a few corners, I had everything lying around.
I think it's great when someone thinks about it and builds something for themselves. Anyone can buy ... 😄
Definitely a nice video of you with a great result.
Here is a very short video of my RIG.

Thanks for posting the video, i just finished my “rig” , started getting better results immediately . On F1 , my 2nd lap I posted a personal best time and on nascar heat 5 , I scored 5 top 3’s in a row.
Congrats!! I still get a huge rush when I accomplish a new milestone like that! Still using the same rig too. I’ve considered buying a more “professional” rig, but this thing performs really well so I haven’t quite found the need. Keep it up!
Great stuff! Thanks for posting this!
That ikea was my first sim racing. I guess great minds think alike!, good looking wheel stand bro.
Thanks my man! Enjoy!
Very nice idea! Just started Sim Racing and maybe Ill try to build it myself
Aha nice one! Never thought of an ikea chair...
Thanks for the vid.. Pulled a bunch of scraps from the garage and peicing together a stand for my T150 and ikea chair. Used 2*6 risers and table for the wheel as that's what i had. Im a bit taller so i cut mine at 26". Hope to finish it today.. My pedals are very light i may Velcro them down to the floor board area..
Nice! Still using my rig and lovin' it. Best of luck
Thanks a lot, made it fully black and the poang chair was fully black too, works great. Thx for the idea
Awesome man! Glad it worked out for you. Happy racing!
This is pretty darned good kiddo! I just got into this iRacing stuff and I'm using the same T150 wheel (with 3 pedals) you have. Looks like I can add shifter to one of the uprights. I'm also as tall as you too so this will work nicely for me.
I'm glad I saw this video of yours, I never even thought of the wheels to move it around with! I watched a lot of videos and it doesn't look like many people have either!
Glad that this may have helped you out a bit! I'm still enjoying this rig today as we approach 2020. I have upgraded the wheel/wheelbase, pedals, traded the console for PC, Gran Turismo for iRacing, but the ol' wooden rig wrapped in faux leather and ikea chair remain! Would a dedicated rig be better? Sure!! But this is a great and VERY inexpensive and effective way to get started. I'm still ALL IN! - keep the rubber side down, Jeff.
Bravo! I have a wooden rig with an IKEA POÄNG chair as well, which is super comfortable for endurance races. I even attached my ButtKicker to the chair. I have been using it for 10 years and it has performed faultlessly, and I have a load cell brake system. My chair will need a new cushion at some point though, but the whole setup cost me less than $100 and it is still as rigid as the day I built it.
Nice!! It's great that sim racing can be enjoyed in so many different ways! Ultimately time in the seat (no matter what seat you choose) is what typically determines your speed! Thanks for watching
@@jeffyspeed8589 Absolutely! Thank you for taking the time to respond.
nice video :) i had poang chair also as driving sim but i reverted it! driving position was more like formula seat and it was really comfortable i could easily spend whole day driving that thing :)
Thanks! I really enjoyed using it! I have since bolted a racing seat to the same rig, but the Poang worked just as well. Primary reason I got the racing seat was to be able to attach a bass transducer. You could definitely add a transducer to the Poang though if you are willing to modify the chair!
I think you can add gearbox wooden plate under your hand. Awesome work!
Good job! I'm looking to make one for myself.
Great video, been looking for a cheap diy rig and didn’t want to have to buy a real seat from a car and I already had this chair. I was wondering though what modifications you’ve done, I was thinking of a couple of things and I saw in a comment you were thinking of making a new video and I would really be interested to see what you’ve done to it. Building it tomorrow and I’m pretty excited
Thats hilarious, im trying to get into sim racing and im using this same chair.
I like your front caster idea. I have seen other rigs with casters all the way around and they really aren't needed.
Thanks - Ya I have a dedicated spot for the rig now and don't move it around much but when I did, this was a REALLY good solution. Didn't need to worry about locking the wheels down or moving them out of the way. They are just there when you need them.
My Fifa/NHL/NBA 2k/F1/Assetto Corsa/Project cars chair!
Great video man!
Awesome! I have the cheaper version of the Poang as a PC chair. My friend added a piece of wood to the left arm and mounted a monitor arm on it. He also created a keyboard and mouse tray that locks into the arm. It's epic. I barely use it these days though so I'm thinking it's the perfect start of an epic sim setup! Your setup is great, but the distance from the screen would drive me nuts. So my chair already gets rid of that issue.
That sounds really cool! And you’re definitely right about the screen. I ultimately upgraded to PC and VR. But that’s been one of the best things about this rig - which is still my setup - that it’s easy to modify and upgrade!
A while back I swapped the Poang chair for a racing bucket, not because there was any issue with the Poang chair, but I really wanted to install a bass transducer and it transfers more energy to the racing seat. I’ve used multiple wheels and pedals with this rig, different monitor configurations, PC, PS4. I’ve moved it from the original apartment to two different houses and it still works great!
I have an idea that could potentially enhance the experience even further.
What if you put 4 aluminium poles around the seat and used wire rope or strong rope to hang black curtains from them or 2 wall hooks?
This could create a more immersive environment and add to the feeling of being inside a cockpit.
Additionally, adding 2 small speakers behind your head on the left and right sides could give you a great surround sound experience.
You could attach these speakers to the poles as well. I hope this idea helps!
You can also go for extendable poles and 2 mini wall hooks if you want to be more discreet.3 curtains and 4 poles seems easy and fast to disassemble quickly.
That sounds sick!! Nice idea😀
or go big and get a vr headset =)
Damn man you deserve more subscribers :)
Let me be your 100th subscriber. Good Luck!!!!
Appreciate that!!
Can you break down all the materials you bought, where at and how much on average it cost you plus maybe the tours you used? I would really like to build the same exact model since I’m 57 as well but I don’t weigh as much so it might be useful for me too. Also I don’t really know what I could do to add a mount to it but I would like to do so, so that I can have the TV attached to the set up
that's cool! cheap and easy 👍
Thanks! I’m still using it and it’s still performing well.
Sick video bro I am currently designing my own racing sim rn
How did it turn out Little_Knyfe?
Made the same before seeing your video even I choose the same chair lol, for only 35 euros that is the chair cost is perfect and it was ready for use in a day. Only difference I didn't paint it I used carbon sticker in every surface.
DUDE! We got the exact same seat, cant belive that! This would make the perfect video for me then...
Edit: I'm also 5.7 wow, this cant get any closer to my scenario
Hello, can you send me the plan? In centímeter please, if you d'ont have send in IN. Thank you
@@fernandono sorry, i ended up building a custom RIG with steel frames

Thanks man
Great DIY rig! It is possible to get a sketch and dimensions in centimeters?
Jo nice i have been looking fir this so lomg but how dit you makenyou pedals on the wood that they can not moove?.
My first “rig” was made using an IKEA chair like yours and some wood….. it totally crippled me! Ruined my back so bad that I had to stop racing for 3 months. However that gave me the time to do it properly, custom designed and built aluminium profile rig that I still use 7 years later( with some modifications) do not go down this path!!!! If your spending £1000 pounds on electronics or £2000 with a pc then budget 4-6 hundred pounds on some profile and do it properly
I just did your build and it came out awesome. Did a few tweaks I was using scrap wood I had in the shed. Uprights are much thicker so I did not need the green bracers. Did you know a standard gaming chair if you take it of the swivel and stand fits right inside the poang chair? So I have the lumbar support feel of and expensive rig seat with poang chair position which I love.
That sounds great! I’m glad it worked out well for you. Which sim do you use?
Got a used pretty beat up g920 with gearstick + trustmaster stick with missing tablemount-thingy.
It was a blast to play cargames with it instead of a xboxcontroller. Also tried vr in raceroom and lfs(got a htc wive).
Now I must fix myself a simrig. Gonna go really cheap and do it DIY. I target to get a an old carseat, and some wood, got a old 32' TV.
The challange gonna be to decide to set it up. My pc-rig is in the livingroom, but I do want the sim rig be in bedroom. The question is if I need to use ny second pc or if I can use some cablework in my appartment to remotly have the pc in my livingroom, power my simrig in the bedroom. 🤔
спасибо!
How did you attach the pedals to the base?
You could quite easily arrange for the footboard with the pedals to move forward or backwards on the rails to provide adjustable position, I think.
Definitely! I also have swapped the ikea chair for a racing seat on sliders. The rig is super adaptable if you’re handy and creative. I primarily switched the chair so that I could attach a bass transducer for a bit more immersion. Thanks for watching!
jesus the audio mix
Mozzie lol... yaaa need to work on my editing skills. Hope you enjoyed the rest though!
this is a Christopher Nolan video dude
Omg, I turned up the video to hear him and got blasted by the music.
This seat is perfect 🤣😅
This is looking pretty cool and elegand and cheap at the saME TIME, really cool setup man, today im geting mt G29 , got my Mercedes ML Seat already with heatinga nd electric adjustmentts, all will be operational and the adjustable will be moving with crashes and stuff. all will try to make with ardurino and relays. should i put iut on on youtube as i build it? it will be from wood too :)
Heck ya man! Post it up when you build! Let me know if you do, I’ll check it out
Hi, first of all thanks for thé explaination. I've got a question about the yellow part, ils it nécessary for the stability to make them so long ? Or can WE make it shorter ? Thx
I made mine shorter because my niece needs the wheel and pedals closer since she is only 5 feet tall. Its just as stable cause the stability comes from the planks across them. Or as in the diagram red parts.
Really great build amd great video. Im not too sure if it's just me or others feel the same on the transition from voice and music. The music is way too loud for me.
Thanks! It’s not just you the audio is pretty bad. I’m much better at putting together the rig than the video about putting together the rig hahaha hope the info was helpful.
at what point (inches) did you make the cuts @5:11 ? how did you determine? Cool video, going to make it this week, thanks!
Hey good luck! You’ll enjoy the rig when you are done! I still use this same rig to this day! You’re best bet is to mock it up once you have cut them to the 27.5” and draw a line with a pencil. If your angle ends up a little differently than mine, it will be fine. Just try to stick to the overall form and dimensions and it will be sturdy enough. Luckily this doesn’t really have to support much of a load and is difficult to mess it up. Just take your time and make sure things are tight and you’ve eliminated as much flex and wobble as you can. Best of luck!
Quick question, what size TV are you using with this setup?
The TV in the video is a 55 in. Samsung QLED. I no longer use that and wouldn't recommend that size unless you can get it closer to your face. In this video I have since learned that I was too far from the screen. I subsequently went to VR and then to a 49 in. curved monitor that was only about 18 in. away from my eyes.
What is he vinyl wrap you used and where’d you get it?
Cody G it’s like a faux leather. It’s cloth on one side and the leather material on the other. I got it from JoAnn Fabric, but any hobby store will have something similar. I used a staple gun to adhere it. Wrapping the wood with this makes the whole thing look and feel a lot nicer than the raw 2x4
M6 bolts 10mm plus thickness of your wood.
One question, how many screws did you end up using?
if you watch at about 6:01 I show where I put the screws in. It ends up being about 45 screws. I later changed the design of the top plate where the wheel mounts and I'd recommend if you are going to build this you do the same. Rather than the 2x4 under the top plate going from side to side and being screwed in, I changed it to a 12" 2x4 running parallel to the long side of the rig on each side. I used 3 large bolts with washers and nuts to attach these to the uprights. I then mounted the wheel plate to these two 2x4's. This adds a significant amount of vertical rigidity to the wheel.
awesome, the music is too loud, but great vid
Real uneven sound with talk vs music.
but. great idea for a cheap racing rig.
Are the pedals screwed into place?
So, as it was, my parents had my Poang chairs at their house and were not using them. I decided to modify my rig to incorporate the Poang as well (it had been an old office/computer chair). It worked great, and it is more comfortable, but even though the fit between the chair and the frame is tight, I have a problem with pushing the frame forward when I brake. I'm wondering how you managed that. I'm working on solutions.
can you clamp the frame to the seat base?
@@RoamingAdhocrat I want to be able to slide it for ingress and egress, but I might be able to devise some kind of pin to slide in.
Can you give me a more detailed diagram? With cleat messurements
The audio levels destroy the entire video. Too loud when there's music and Too low when you're speaking

2:07 - 2:49
5:35 - 6:00
other than that. Amazing setup! it looks very nice! is that a thrustmaster t300?
does the chair slide back when you press on the pedals
I used thrustmaster T150 and Fanatec V3's on carpet and hardwood and did not have an issue with the chair sliding back.
At the start of the video you say the rig is a little shaky. Can you identify the weaknesses?
For sure. In the initial design I used a single 3/4 inch plywood to mount the wheel to. I have since doubled that and have two 3/4 inch plywood sheets that I screwed together to add rigidity to the mounting surface.
Additionally in the original design I mounted that same top plate directly down into the vertical studs with wood screws. I have since added two 2x4 rails on the underside of the the two 3/4 inch table surface I described above. The table top is screwed onto these 2x4s which are on the bottom and pushed to the outer right and left edges of the table top from the perspective of the chair. They run parallel to the long side of the frame. I used three large bolts with washers and nuts to mount these 2x4s through the outer face of the vertical studs.
Originally the vertical stud was connected to the bottom frame rails using wood screws. I replaced the wood screws with the same nut/bolt/washer described above.
These changes resulted in virtually zero flex in the system. I still use it to this day. Planning on upgrading the wheelbase to a direct drive system and I’m fully confident that this rig will hold up without issue.
Since the video here I’ve upgraded to a Fanatec CSL Elite wheelbase that has more torque than the thrust master shown. And I have no issues.
Ultimately I did replace the Poang chair with a racing seat, but that was primarily so I could attach a bass transducer. The Poang chair does have flex, but it never bothered me. You can insert 2x4s between the chair base and arms to eliminate that if you want.
Hope this helps and good luck!
@@jeffyspeed8589 thanks so much! Do you have any photos of the upgraded rig and the improvements mentioned above?
Great video, but please mute that music while driving...
Get rid of the steering wheel clamp. Just bolt it in.
I would have liked to try this rig, but I already made one with a fixed seat. If I can find a free (or almost free) Poang chair, I'll try to modify mine to be more like yours. Mine is actually pretty good, but I would prefer to have the movable (and removable) seat. I used to have two Poang chairs, but I returned them or something; I can't remember. Like many others here, I am also 5'7" and have the T-150.
I was very interested in knowing how you attached the pedal stand to the wood panel. I guess you used the two screw holes. I might disassemble mine and mount them inverted even though they work fine as they are (slightly inclined)
Where did u bought that chair? I cant find anything similar

@@jeffyspeed8589 Thanks!
Nice work mate, you cannot buy this result
Is the stand itself shaky or just the chair?
The stand moves very little. I need to do an ""update video" because I made a few minor changes to the stand that made it extremely rigid. The chair is flexible though. It doesn't have back legs so it has some spring to it. honestly I don't notice it at all and I don't find it bothersome. I've just seen others make the argument that there are less flexible options that they prefer.
@@jeffyspeed8589 Ah I see. This week I`m planning to do one similar, but it`s the stand only. Are the changes you made adding extra fortification planks at the front?

Can someone give me the plan, where to fix the woods, ...
Thanks
It is a bit difficult to see, but at 6:00 I show each place that I used wood screws to attach the frame together. I have since upgraded the way that the two gray upright attach to the board that the wheel mounts to. Rather than the 2x4 running from side to side under the table, I used 2 2x4's mounted to the bottom outside edges of the table in the same orientation as the yellow frame rails in the diagram. I used 3 bolts through the gray uprights and the new rails under the table for a much sturdier connection and stiffer design. Hope this helps.
@@jeffyspeed8589 Thanks

I have the exactly same chair from IKEA. Bought for my wife to breastfeed our baby but after she was done it became my racing seat! haha
How in the world did you get the chair for 30 dollars? The cheapest one if found so far, was for 60 Euros, which is about 70 US Dollars. 😅😂
Whats the game you play?
The game in this video is Gran Turismo Sport on PS4 - But I mostly use iRacing nowadays. GT Sport is great fun though! I just upgraded to PC and don't often take the time to switch back and forth.

HEADPHONE USER EFFIN ALERT SON!
Haha I know I know... I'll do better next time!
But don't try it on a Arcade game like GTS xD
Platin Bullet haha it’s not a bad place to start! I still use this rig, but have since upgraded to a Fanatec CSL Elite wheel, Fanatec V3 pedals, primarily use iRacing, built a i7-9700/rtx2700 gaming PC.
If I hadn’t built this for the thrustmaster 150 and PS4 days, I would never have actually gotten into sim racing. GTS gets a bad rap, but it’s a lot of fun and there is some good racing.
