Colorado’s FAVORITE BIRDS, FLOWERS, & BUTTERFLIES-Hike to Timberline Falls-Middle St. Vrain River
COLORADO’s FAVORITE #birds , #butterflies , and #wildflowers (at least some of ours) . @dnasbirdingadventures are back from our three week trip to Michigan and are in #colorado for some local #birding . This is one of the spots we hike every year, especially in the summer. Everything’s abundant in this trail along the Middle St. Vrain River trailhead. Just a couple miles in and there’s beautiful Timberline Falls. We actually get 5 new 2024 birds and one LIFER!
Interestingly, we have made this hike a yearly event. Here’s last year’s video around the same time:

    Gulls will eat anything they can fit into their gullet hehe! I've never been to that part of the States. Lots of good birding, indeed. Whooping cranes are definitely on my bucket list -- sooo rare. Can't believe we almost lost them to extinction. Thanks for sharing. :)

      @@LauraGYoung You’re welcome and thanks for watching. If we didn’t see them on this trip, we were definitely going to head to Corpus Christi area where they winter to see them. Wood Buffalo National Park Canada is another great spot to see them nesting. LOL, we’re realizing more and more how birds will eat anything. We love playing the game, Wingspan too which shows what birds will eat. It’s so fun. Happy birding and travels.

    Thanks for sharing. My favorite photos are the Piping Plover and the Virginia Rail, because they are nice photos and the birds are rarely seen. I was amazed to see the Herring Gull eating a sea lamprey - makes me wonder if the lamprey could attach to the stomach of the gull, and eat it from the inside out! The only Whooping Crane I have seen was in the farm lands in western Lenawee County Michigan back in June 2016. It seemed to be paired with a Sandhill Crane. They returned in the area in spring for a number of years.

    • @dnasbirdingadventures

      @@ASadler-ug1nm Thanks, I love the Piping Plover pic hiding behind the grass the best. He has a few others too on the Whitefish Point video. I, too, thought the same about the Lamprey. The sea gull seemed to make sure it was dead before engulfing it whole by knocking it against the rock SEVERAL times. We were only that close to a rail a few times, the Clapper Rail in FL and the Virginia Rail at Lon Hagler. This Rail had a hurt toe, so we let him/her walk all the way down the boardwalk to stay out of its way. That’s interesting about the Whooping Crane hanging out with the Sandhill Crane. I believe they migrate about the same time anyway. Thanks again for watching.

    Back in the 1970s you could walk down to the bottom of the upper falls. .Those who were brave enough could walk behind it. The state figured out that it was not a good thing and restricted access. I was amazed to see the gull swallow a lamprey.

    Thanks for the comment. I guess you have to be a birder to notice 😆. That's the main reason we went up there. I'm so glad they decided to return after that 2023 storm took out so much area. The museum made it worth the trip too. Amazing wreck remnants and history. We do love it up there in the UP. I think we missed a lot though. We'll have to return to the rest of the Seney WR and other areas we missed.You must frequent that area or live there. Those damn flies!!😮

    • @KurtG-nn2cz
      @KurtG-nn2cz 20 днів тому

      I live in the lower peninsula but have been coming to the UP for 50 years. Two family members graduated from NMU in Marquette and one worked on a Great Lakes freighter . I used to fish a lot and am very interested in wildlife. I have yet to see or hear a wolf or a moose . Even a few cougars are around up there . I know Whitefish Point is popular for bird migrations. There are peregrines around Pictured Rocks. The UP is a great place if you like history , waterfalls , wildlife and all kinds of outdoor activities. The bugs are usually an issue late May until mid-August but as you noticed it seems to be a record year for them.

    • @dnasbirdingadventures
      @dnasbirdingadventures 20 днів тому

      @@KurtG-nn2cz wow, working on a freighter would be interesting. We were hoping to see a bear at least since I read there are 12k in Michigan and about 10k in the UP. We did see a wolf when we were on our way home in Necedah, Wisconsin.

    • @KurtG-nn2cz
      @KurtG-nn2cz 20 днів тому

      @@dnasbirdingadventures The closest I got to a bear was at Tahquamenon. I was standing a good 50 feet from it and a large group was about 30 feet away taking pictures.It was on the other side of a rail fence eating blueberries. It gave them a bluff charge and then came towards me and climbed the rail fence a few feet from me. It was never a threat . I got it all on video. The freighter Michipicoten developed a 13 foot long crack in the hull near Isle Royale a few weeks ago. It made it safely to harbor. I do not think there will be a disaster like the Fitz again due to modern electronics on the boats. If big waves come up they will anchor in a protected area , sometimes for a few days.

    Being a birder, and being from Michigan, I enjoyed your tour. If you get a chance, you should stop by Seney National Wildlife Refuge while in the Upper Peninsula. As you said, with the trees in full bloom, it can be very difficult to see the birds. I give you credit for your patience to get photos - it helps to have a camera with a zoom lens.

      @ASadler-ug1nm Thanks for commenting and watching. What a beautiful part of the country. We actually touch the surface of Seney WR at Whitefish point.. Then we got eaten alive 😆 by black flies further west. I'm putting the Whitefish Point video together now. I know we'll have to return to your state in the future for some more Birding. With our very slow and gas guzzling van, we pretty much took a straight line. More to come, too, with the Tahquamenon Falls area. Do you carry bear spray with you? Are you concerned about bears (I totally would be! 🐻)? My husband always carries a can when we are hiking in the forest/mountains - we’ve had multiple grizzly encounters in Jasper and Waterton NP (Alberta).

      I have bear spray but usually forget it. I usually carry a whistle though. I've encountered many bears and even a moose while hiking. It's the elusive mountain lions I worry about attacking from behind. Eek. I think if we had grizzlies, I'd REALLY make sure to bring spray. 🤔 Thanks for your concern 😊. I should get better especially now that they're coming out of hibernation. Thanks for tuning in to out channel. We can't wait to explore your area. We've only seen a grizzly once when we were in Grand Teton.

    Thank you for sharing your travels along the Platte with us! I just made my second annual trek out that way this past weekend and saw the snowpiles melting everywhere. Spotted some cranes, red winged blackbird, my first greater grackle, a few crows and other little birds I didn't know the names of!

      You're very welcome and thanks for tuning into our channel. Sounds like you found some great birds. 👍 We can't seem to get away from the wintry weather yet 😕. You probably saw a Common or Great-tailed Grackle. Where do you normally bird? Happy trails!!

      @@dnasbirdingadventures I am a novice birder! This was only my second birdwatching venture, and both have been with the sandhill cranes out in Nebraska. I just installed a bird feeder on my patio and plan to start venturing out on the local bike path (Wabash Trace in southwestern Iowa) to see what I can spot with my binoculars and begin journaling what I find. I'm very excited to begin.

      Yay, you'll love birding! The best part is being out in nature. Have fun. You probably know about the great birding apps to support learning about where the birds are (ebird) and identification and calls (Merlin). It's also nice that you have a feeder up now. We're about ready to take them down since the bears will be coming out soon. Have fun.

    The "cedar pinecones" are actually the male eastern redcedar pollen cones. The species is dioecious, meaning most individual trees are either male or female. The "berries," actually the seed-bearing cones, are on the female trees. The river at Kearney is the just plain Platte. The North and South Plattes converge east east of the city of North Platte.

    • @dnasbirdingadventures
      @dnasbirdingadventures 3 місяці тому

      Wow, thanks for the clarifications. It's a georgous new area for us and appreciate the comment. I must have called the river, "North Platte" meaning Platte. You must be from that area. We have the South Platte heading north to NE in Colorado. I don't think I've ever seen so many pollen cones on one tree...it was brilliantly orange. Thanks so much for tuning in to our channel.

      @@dnasbirdingadventures The pollen cones are only really visible for a short time each year. They'll open simultaneously soon and then be gone. Glad you like the area. I currently live in Ord about 60 miles north of Kearney. I pay some attention to birds. Yesterday I noticed the turkey vultures were back. They're the true bird of spring. The non-breeding sub-adults roost on a large cell tower downtown and it's quite a show when they come in to roost every evening. Haven't noticed any cranes going over yet, but that could change when it warms up again starting Tuesday. Juniper seed cones are fleshy, unlike most, wind-dispersed conifers, because they are dispersed by birds. Birds eat them in the winter, providing the chemical and mechanical scarification necessary for the the seeds to germinate.
