    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette 9 годин тому

      Thank you 🙇🏻‍♀️ This is a recent decision, I have been hesitating for a long time, but I think I’ll follow the Figure Painting track and supplement it with other courses (on portrait and animal drawing). Right now NMA is still in the process of opening up modules for interactive, so I’ll jump to the next open module: Figure Drawing I. Before that I want to take a class that I skipped in the Drawing Foundations module, Constructive Figure I, because the next module includes the second part of that class and I don’t want to take it without the first half 😉 Which track are you considering?

      Thank you, I’m glad it’s interesting! I’m not doing the 2 year foundation program, because it covers the Drawing Foundation module and I’ll be done or almost done with it when the program starts… I don’t just pick my modules either, I follow the course guide that is available on the NMA website. No matter the track you want to follow, you start with the Drawing Foundations module. I also follow the order in which the courses are laid out within the module, which I recommend 😊

    14:31 I deeply resonate with this. As an autistic person I feel exactly like this about almost every aspect of my life. I have so much progress to make in order to let go of that mindset but I'm working on it! It's all about allowing yourself to suck at things so you eventually don't suck as much! I loved the idea of making review videos for single classes, I mean to join nma soon (thank you for your advice in another comment section, I am really thankful that you took your time to explain everything to me so clearly) so it will help me know what to expect coming into a class! Again, as an autistic person jumping into things (like classes) without much knowledge is nerve-wracking and honestly paralysing at times. So a little heads up would be super helpful

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette 9 годин тому

      That’s interesting, I didn’t relate this to autism at all but there could be something there. Anyway, that doesn’t change the feeling :) Even if you can’t let go, I believe being aware of what’s happening helps dealing with emotions. Thank you for the single class reviews! I won’t be able to do that for the classes I took in the past but hopefully my « 1 year at NMA » video could give you an idea, I show all the assignments and share my memories from the class in that one. I also like to know what I’m jumping into, I’m glad my channel can help with that!

    When you finish the drawing fundations module it'll be cool if you make a video talking about all the classes and maybe the drawings/paintings you like the most and your impressions. Just an idea but it'll be nice to watch that. P.D.: I really like your dynamic sketching portfolio, it looks pretty good.

      Thank you, that’s a great idea! I’ll have to think about the format, because I don’t want to repeat my « 1 year at NMA video » but talking about what the highlights and harder parts of the module were for me could be interesting, and as you said my favorite assignments. I take note! 😊

  • @petrapaints

    I totally agree with you. It is quite an insult to real artists who worked every day very hard, drawing different lines, trying to improve their techniques, binge watching and studying art and lear ing about theory and science behind it. Like children illustrators can make it look easy to make art at a loose way but in fact they overdo composition, bulky lines with purpose. Beginners and amateurs tend to draw like this but you clearly see that their mistakes are a lack of experience and knowledge and not with purpose. So art is subjectif in a way we can like a style or not, but before someone can make a descent drawing, no matter what kind of style, even the childish one: they all had a kind of education no matter where or what!!

    I have a problem painting in the plein air with carrying clean and dirty water as it is not always possible to find a drain nearby. The best thing I came up with is to bring two bottles one for clean water and one for dirty water and use a collapsable funnel to pour dirty water into a bottle. Maybe you have some ideas about that.

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette 8 днів тому

      Unfortunately I don't have a much better idea... You could slightly reduce the weight you carry by taking your water directly in the cups you'll use when painting (that would remove the need for extra bottels and the funnel), something like pill bottles works well. If you use a water spray, instead of having a small water spray and a water bottle you could also opt for a large water spray that would also act as your clean water bottle. But water is the heaviest and most annoying thing in a sketching kit 😅

      Thank you 😊 I can't tell you because I haven't chosen yet... The first module (Drawing Foundations) is common to all tracks so you don't have to decide for a long while. After I finish it I'm going to follow the Figure Drawing I module, because they're still opening the modules for interactive and that's the next open module. I want to stay within the interactive and this module is part of 2 tracks I have been considering: Illustration, and Figure painting.

    Bonjour Julie, j’aime beaucoup suivre se que tu fais et tu as finis par me donner envie de m inscrire aux cours ! Je suis désolé de te de poser se genre de question mais avant de m’inscrire j’aimerais savoir si les vidéos sont bien tous sous titré en français ? Je me débrouille en anglais mais pas au point de suivre un cours complet. Merci a toi pour partager tes vidéos très intéressantes et motivantes. ❤

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette 12 днів тому

      C'est avec plaisir ! Et une très bonne question question à poser... Malheureusement non, tous les cours ne sont pas sous-titrés en français. Je viens de re vérifier, pour l'instant les cours qui ont des sous-titres traduits sont : Drawing Foundations I Drawing Foundations II Drawing Foundations III Drawing Foundations IV Fundamentals of Drawing and Perspective Je pense que les trois premiers cours du catalogue (Drawing Foundations I et II, et Fundamentals of Drawing and Perspective) remplissent plus d'un mois d'études, donc vous pouvez essayer de prendre un mois d'abonnement pour tester. Si à la fin de ces cours vous vous rendez compte que ce sera trop difficile sans les sous-titres, vous aurez quand même appris beaucoup. Fundamentals of Drawing and Perspective est un de mes cours préférés 😊 En français on m'a recommandé www.apprendre-a-dessiner.org mais je ne l'ai pas personnellement testé. C'est fait par un ancien professeur de Émile Cohl et cela ressemble à un équivalent français de la méthode Drawabox. Le fonctionnement du site est différent, on achète des cours plutôt qu'un abonnement... Je pense que NMA est la meilleure option mais si l'anglais est un gros blocage, après les cours traduits à NMA, c'est vers ce site que je me tournerais. N'hésitez pas si vous avez d'autres questions !

Je me débrouille en anglais mais pas a l’oral, j’ai du mal a le comprendre mais je le lis sans trop de difficultés. Hi Julie! I love your videos and really relate to you. I have been interested in joining nma for quite a long time now (1 year+) but i didnt have the time until now. I have read on their website that as of August 1st 2024, they dont offer free feedback on assignments (while following the interactive tracks). I honestly find that change to be a huge turn off for me and i feel like subscribing would be a waste of money and time (sorry). The token system isnt to my liking at all but i would like to know your opinion on this. Do you still recommend people to subscribe if we wont get feedback (without paying extra)? I think i already know what your answer is going to be but i am very very doubtful of this new change. Thank you in advance, and for these wonderful videos.

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette 12 днів тому

      Thank you for your comment! And you don't have to be sorry. I totally get you, the token system changes a lot. If you want to get feedback on assignments, it's going to be more expensive now than it was (and still is) for me, and that's unfortunate. I am in a privileged position as I don't have to pay for tokens until my subscription expires. I did the math, and had I needed to pay for tokens, I couldn't have afforded to move through the courses as fast as I did. I feel very lucky, but at the same time people who joined before I did had even better deals. I still wholeheartedly recomment NMA. It doesn't change anything to the quality of the education (actually some of their new offers improve it), and regardless of the price I don't know anything that compares. On top of that I think the tokens and different level of critiques are fairly priced and if you have the discipline to follow the courses, they provide more value than you could get elsewhere for the same price, as far as I know. I still recommend the most basic subscription, it's more than enough to get started. If you can afford tokens to submit your assignments, it adds a lot of value (especially now the new "video tutoring" option where you get a draw over of your assignment, I still have to try it out but I heard great things about it from other students). If you can't afford tokens, here's what I would do: - there's a study buddy club on Discord, you could join it to get feedback from other students currently doing the same class, and / or ask for critiques from the community - do all the assignments no matter what, and save them somewhere: maybe you'll be able to afford tokens at some point and you'll want to submit them to get certificates for the courses If you stil doubt (and this is my advice no matter what) just get a month of sucbsciption to try it out, it doesn't engage you to anything. I hope you can find the best option for you to study art now that you have time 😊

      Merci beaucoup ! Je pense que l'abonnement live ne reviendra pas, il incluait le group coaching et les cours live, mais ces deux offres sont remplacées par de nouvelles offres avec les tokens. Malheureusement l'offre pour les critiques des devoirs a évolué et est devenue payante (elle était gratuite en phase beta), 1 token pour une critique de devoir et la possibilité de demander un certificat pour le cours une fois tous les devoirs soumis. Il n'y a pas d'option pour simplement valider un devoir sans avoir de critique, mais si vous faites les cours sans critiques vous pouvez très bien accéder aux vidéos du cours suivant, personne ne demandera de pré requis. Avec le nouveau système il y a aussi la possibilité de soumettre n'importe quel devoir pour n'importe quel cours, il n'y a plus besoin de tout faire dans l'ordre. J'espère que c'est un peu plus clair ! C'est une grosse période de changement.

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette 12 днів тому

      Thank you! I work from home and combine my online shop, this UA-cam channel (1 day of work per week), studying at NMA and other projects. I try to rest on Sundays, lately I have been working 6 days a week, everything combined. Some days I don't study at all, when I'm making a video for example. On days when I study, it can vary... It's easier for me to give you a weekly estimation. I think on average I spend around 20 / 25 hours working on NMA classes. Some classes are heavier on assignments, others heavier on video content, lately with Dynamic Sketching I spent most of that time on assignments. But if you were talking about this course specifically, the video lessons were 2 hours per week and I spent between 1 and a half and 3 hours doing the assignments depending on the weeks. ☺️ I was working on other courses at the same time.

    Your art is very pretty and so is your sketchbook work. I find markers to be difficult too. I have forced myself to use them for value studies so I understand the purpose but every overlap makes that shaded line and it’s difficult to get motivated. I do find pencil work to be fun and easy. I’m trying a new Gouache brand because of streaking I was getting with my first 2 brands. So far, I find watercolor to be the most fun and something where the practice will bring results. I am persisting in landscapes myself because I like painting outside. Nature is more beautiful than I can portray with my art but it is fun. Merci beaucoup.

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette 12 днів тому

      Thank you! I get what you mean with the overlapping with markers. It's better with alcohol markers, before it's dry you can kind of make a wash and it will even out and blend together... I just find the smell and feeling unpleasant, and it bleeds through some papers. I find a lot of joy drawing outside too, although I have been focusing on statues and botanicals 😊

    I am curious if the program has students using reference photos for the drawing fundamentals courses or if students must find the objects and set up the still life with lighting themselves?

    • @Julie.Miette
      @Julie.Miette 15 днів тому

      For all assignments where you work from references, those are provided with the lessons (even if your subscription doesn't grant you access to the image library, you still have the assignment references). There is one still life in Drawing Foundations I for which you have to setup the still life yourself, and putting it together is part of the assignment. Otherwise references are provided, although for some assignments you are welcome to work from life and take a picture of your reference if you submit your assignment, so the TA can see it too. In all cases it's written in the assignment PDF. 🙂

    I use egg tempera. I've been using it about a year and some change. Everyday feels like the first time I'm using it with how much I learn. Koo Schadler's book is a great recourse. Sad to see how niche the medium it. Love the accent btw. Makes you more authoritative on matters of fine arts.

      It is difficult. Steve Huston had a great suggestion in one of his courses, that is to simply aim for 5mn a day. Don't aim for more, and if you skip a day, on the next one don't try to make up for it, just try to draw for 5 minutes; as you build the habit and get into the drawings this may increase naturally, enjoy it, but don't ask yourself for more.

    Fascinating journey through the sketchbook. It was absolutely no surprise regarding the delightful results of your pen drawing studies from Alphonse Mucha - knowing that you greatly admire the Art Nouveau period, must have felt right at home! What really caught my attention was the small study next to the Rodin sketch (23:36) - I think I recognise it: it appears to be a copy of the Capitoline Aphrodite. If there is an amphora next to her with a cloth draped on top of it, then it's certainly that. The pose is very similar to the neoclassic Venus Italica (can be even considered a gesture continuation) - only the cloth is held by the goddess in the Italica version, usually with a small and decorated box or amphora beside her. This is why I'm guessing your sketch to be the Capitoline. I enjoyed your tour with the detailed and honest explanation, and am looking forward to your next video. Have a great week and let Art flow freely! 🤟🎨

    Excellent journal once again with a wide-scaled art progress presentation. Fantastic how you keep at it to stay consistent and within focus despite the summer break for some courses at the academy, and overcoming difficulties that arise regarding materials or anything else. Your analysis and opinions regarding the different ball-point pens was interesting indeed. Each and every page from your studies and sketchbooks presented a wealth of commitment and a fascinating insight to your method. Am GREATLY looking forward to your inking process - it is a wonderful medium, I personally love cross-hatching and its ability to give weight, shadow, textures, atmosphere, direction, movement to any composition. Last but not least: HUGE congratulations on reaching 2k (and more) subscribers! I am very sure that number will grow and grow - just like your art journey. This motivated me to go look for figure drawing options online - one per day sounds so doable, and there are no in person figure drawing classes where I live. You capture movement so beautifully in these! Especially love the figure at 5:13 ... and as someone who's a very hesitant artist, dynamic sketching sounds like what I need, but also scary. Your animals are so expressive, I love them :)

    Whenever I do any kind of class, my only goal is to DO and FINISH all the exercises! If I just “go with my flow” there would be no point attending the class for me - I am really slow and have the tendency to get sidetracked with details that I probably won’t even need in the final work… 😅 I am far past caring about the aestetics of my class sketches, otherwise there would be none.🤷‍♀

      It's still difficult for me to think that way, I think it's our natural tendency to want to make things look nice... But that's about making the right compromise.
