Russian Bees and the Bear
Переглядів 2,4 тис.Рік тому
Our apiary was visited by a bear a couple weeks ago and he did a lot of damage to the hives and the frames. Since then, we've been busy gathering the bees together and redesigning the apiary to protect them from a return visit. Luckily, the Hive Hotels held together and they protected a lot of the bees. The Langstroth Hives didn't protect the bees as well and the bear enjoyed the honey as well ...
New Hive Design
Переглядів 374Рік тому
Welcome to the 2023 season of Two Bee Honey and the Hive Hotel. The bees are loving the warmer days and are out looking for nectar and pollen in the dandelions and other early spring flowers. We are very excited to have an updated and improved Hive Hotel design. We're using cedar planks for better weather resistance and the back screen is attached to the top to allow easier access to the hives....
Future Beekeeper Zachary at the Apiary
Переглядів 87Рік тому
My friend and future beekeeper Zachary visited me at the apiary with his mom, and they helped me with my beekeeping duties last week. We examined the honey flow, looked at the brood patterns to make sure the queens were laying enough eggs, and we even checked on the queens themselves to make sure they were healthy and happy. It was a great visit, Zachary was very helpful, and I'm sure he will b...
Dividing the Hive Hotel and double screening a Langstroth
Переглядів 2292 роки тому
Because the Summer honey flow is going so well, I've expanded my Hive Hotels and I put a double screen on one of my Langstroth hives. In the Hive Hotels, I moved the queen from the top apartment to the next one down and I moved a few of the brood frames with her. I left most of the honey frames in the top apartment as well as a couple of brood frames to allow them to create a new queen if they ...
Early June look at The Hive Hotel and the Langstroth hive

Two Bee Honey is happy to show you the first video of the 2022 season. Many of our hives have new marked queens to keep them strong and help with hive management. After doing splits and ensuring the health of the hives in May, we checked on their progress in early June. All of the hives are doing well, and we expect another good season. If you like the video, please subscribe, share, and leave ...
Hive Hotel in the Summer of 2021

We've been filming the progress of the Hive Hotels this summer, but I haven't had the chance to post the videos, so I compiled them together and have a series of short clips that show the progress of the Hive Hotels from June through early August. The two new Hive Hotels at the apiary are doing really well and even outperformed the Langstroth hives I have setup with them. The bees at the satell...
New Bee Yard and Hive Hotels

The new bee yard faces south for early morning sun and has semi-shade from the afternoon sun. The new location has two new Hive Hotels, which are starting with two hives each and three Langstroth hives. All of the new hives are Russian honey bees which are stronger and healthier than a lot of the hybrids available today. They have been very gentle so far, and have been very good honey producers...
Russian Bees Survived the Winter
Переглядів 3143 роки тому
It was a warm day in March, so I checked on my bees in the Hive Hotel and I was happy to see that they survived the winter. The bad news is that in that location they were they only hive to survive. The Northern Hybrids did not survive the winter and the Russians didn't survive in the Langstroth Hives. I have more Russian bees coming this year and I'm going to introduce you to our new, expanded...

Working the Hive Hotel and the Langstroth Hive
Переглядів 2 тис.3 роки тому
It has been a very good season so far. The Hive Hotel has produced about 100 pounds of honey so far and the four Langstroth Hives have produced about 150 pound of honey at the same location. The Late Summer Harvest will be ready in a couple of weeks and we hope to double the amount of honey they produce. Our other locations are also doing well and we are having a lot of fun working with the bee...

    Really interesting my second watch. do you find that the bees have issues with moving parts? I too have a special situation with my hives. I have a northern hybrid, bot Italian and Carniolan. I have a flow hive 2, yet what I did was stack two deep boxes that hold frames that are 18.5" deep. My bees adore them. I find it mimics nature and they certainly over winter better on them.

      Bees don't really like it when you move their boxes, that's why I'm moving to the Hive Hotels where I just move one frame at a time. I also started a Hive Hotel with an extended bottom and the bees can build comb up to 20 inches. So far it's working, but I think I'll go back to the normal box size for the winter.

      We have yet to see a rocking hive in any of those hotels. A strong rocking hive would be filling space that doesn’t follow bee space. Hello from the bluegrass part of the state.

      Hi and thanks for your interest in the Hive hotel. There is a metal rod at the top of the hives and the frames have a small hook that rests on the rod. I use some deep frames for brood and bottomless medium frames for brood and honey, this allows me to control and move the frames as needed by the bees. Bee spacing is not a problem as long as I tend to the bees at least every other week and remove excess comb.

    Bee Hotel, as you name it, is a common style of beekeeping in Slovenija. Named AZ hive (AŽ panj). It has advantages, and disadvantages too. Best regards!

    • @twobeehoney4485

      It is very similar to the AZ hive, but I added a bar across the top of the hive to support the frames hanging from a hook. Yes there are advantages and disadvantages to the design.

      My Grandfather had similar hives. They used to be very popular in eastern Germany a few decades ago. We call them "rear treatment hives" or "Blätterstock" ("leaf hive") They were mostly fixes on trailers. One of this trailers could be home to 30 colonies or more. So moving around was very easy but they aren't very common any more. I think they were also used in switzerland and other parts of europe

    This helped me to understand they are all individual hives. I thought the little white spins that you have on the bottom of each section was to allow the bees up and down movement but each hive is on a single level. The netting idea is cool hopefully it’s never loose and get a queen sneaking into the wrong hive.

    • @twobeehoney4485
      @twobeehoney4485 3 роки тому

      The queen will always stay in her apartment or hive but the white access doors give me the ability to allow worker bees to go from one hive to the next to avoid swarming and allow them to naturally grow. So far they seem to be working well. This year we'll see if they continue to get along.

  • @collegeguy14

    Looks like the laws of bee space is wonky. I’m mostly talking about the frames rocking back and forth. Could you show us the hanging system? Looks like a single eye screw ontop of the frame. If you did 2 eye screws one on each end of the frame they could stay much more rigid and not lean forward or backward in the hive. Not lecturing just trying to spitball ideas for ya. Basically like the Slovenian hive design.

    • @twobeehoney4485
      @twobeehoney4485 3 роки тому

      This year, 2021, I'm going to show more about the hanging system and how it is working. The bee space doesn't seem to be a problem yet but I am always keeping an eye on it. I am sticking with one eye screw for now because they are easier to take on and off but I've thought about one on each end too. Maybe I'll try that too. It is much like the Slovenian design with a couple of tweeks to see if I could improve hive and honey production. The hanging frame and allowing worker bee movement are the main things I'm working on. Thanks for the interest.

    I had not seen the hive hotel before either, I assume it’s your creation. I’ll be really curious how they make it through the winter in something like that where the bottom combs are not well connected to the upper combs. Moving in that hive look difficult for a cold cluster. Best of luck I’m going to check out more videos.

    You cannot beat the Langstroth beehive design. That cabinet style design exposes all the colonies to the elements. Also as the colonies expand you cannot add another cabinet to give the bees more room. I have seen up to 8 boxes high on the Langstroth beehive, that is flexibility.

    • @twobeehoney4485
      @twobeehoney4485 3 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment. With the door closed in the back the bees are well protected from the elements and the 3/4 inch plywood keeps them well insulated. This hive design allows for bees to move from one section of the hive to another and to split naturally. So far they have been working well together and I avoid the crowding of 8 boxes by harvesting three times a year. The queen will never need more than 9 frames for brood and the rest is honey production. But I do still have a couple Langstroth hives in my apiaries.
