Im thinking of doing this trek in the summer and would like to know a bit more about finding a guide…i assume you can find one once you are in Huaraz or? How much would you say it would be cost wise?Any recommendations? Great video and great inspiration!

    Hello Cary, Love the epic views. I want to get back down there ans do this. So you Conquered Rim to Rim? People dont realize that the 23 or so miles is so exhausting and when you're super tired you have to climb all the way back out of there, and because you filmed you basically did a lot of the trail 3 times LoL i am impressed. I have only done sections, but I am going to be brave someday and make it like you!! Great filming. Enjoyed your whole journey and cheered you on the whole way! 11:36

      Hi! Yeah, that first day from the south rim to the top of the north rim was really challenging. I arrived right before dark. I think I went through some heat exhaustion. The entire next day I stayed in my tent, melted snow, and tried to recover. I was hoping to camp down in the canyon, but everything was taken. Thank you so much for watching. You can do it!

    I did this hike a few years ago and it one of my favourites. The scenery is spectacular. I was lucky in that I had very good weather and visibility but in really bad weather or poor visibility this route would get very challenging and could quite easily get dangerous. I would certainly say that a harness is essential. I crossed the first river on foot no problems but the second river would have been impossible as the river was high and fast. I would have been swept away.

    • @CaryMercer
      @CaryMercer Місяць тому

      I agree that a harness is essential. That second river crossing was one of the riskier decisions out backpacking for me. I had one foot slip out and the water went up to my chest, with my tripod and camera in one hand held as high as possible. And that was around 8:00pm with maybe two more hours of daylight. Lessoned learned. I’m glad you had excellent weather and had a safe, enjoyable time out there.

      @person.X. Місяць тому

      @@CaryMercer That sounds quite scary. I can see a situation where someone could walk all the way to the second river and then realise that they had to turn back which would be a nightmare. Yes it was a very enjoyable hike. If you are ever down in Patagonia again I would recommend the Dientes de Navarino hike down on Isla Navarino in Chilean Tierra del Fuego. I think it is the most southerly hike in the world. You can take the ferry from Punta Arenas and then fly back.

    What circuit did you like the most and why: the Alpamayo or the Huay Huash? Í´m planning visiting Peru next year and I am not quite sure which of both circuits to choose.

    • @CaryMercer
      @CaryMercer Місяць тому

      Can't go wrong with either. Will you do as a self-guided trek? Huayhuash is further from Huaraz. Wasn't challenging getting to the start of huayhuash, but the return journey required some hitchhiking.

    • @robert-anderson-74
      @robert-anderson-74 Місяць тому

      I will do it on my own, I speak spanisch so it wount be a problem to find the trek I guess. Watching your videos it seems Huayhuash is more turistic and better known, maybe higher in altitude because of the lack of vegetation. Alpamayo instead seems less known, more solitary and with less people. Is it this way?

    • @CaryMercer
      @CaryMercer Місяць тому

      @@robert-anderson-74 Hey Robert, yes, I think more people do Huayhuash than Alpamayo. I think most do the Santa Cruz trek, which shares some of the same miles as Alpamayo, but yes, for most of the Alpamayo you will find that is more solitary and less people. I found both to be challenging, rewarding treks.
