The big sew along
United States
Приєднався 2 січ 2010
Hi I'm Gini, and this channel is where I share my passion for sewing with likeminded people like you! I learned to sew as a kid by watching my mom and in home-ec class in 1977. I later worked as a costume designer in Chicago and after moving to Detroit I got a job as a seamstress for a local dressmaker and as a sewing teacher at a local fabric store. I did both of those for about six years before Covid drove everything to a screeching halt. I started this channel in July of 2020 because I really missed being around the fabric store and teaching classes. I missed the camaraderie and I missed helping my students solve problems.
It's been almost three years now since I started this channel and my goals have changed a bit. Now, I see this channel as a way for like minded sewists to share their experiences, inspire and encourage each other.
Thanks for taking the time to read this I hope you find my channel entertaining, informative and fun.
Happy Sewing

Brill vlog as ever Gini 😊 love the dress, the band on the bottom of the skirt ties it all together, I definitely prefer the little puff, it's a cute detail ❤️ love the black white and red one too, they are both so much fun 🥰
Very cool! Have you seen Tessuti's new dress pattern? I really like it but cant decide if the TSW Edgewater is too similar in design and I already have that ...and have made it. Its not, of course, exactly the same, but a similar look. Oh, btw, Zullily has Fly Londons on sale and I saw a pair of golden yellow boots. I didnt pay super close attention because I was looking for another style. There are a couple other great boots and shoes...and sandals...but colors/sizes are limited.
Brilliant, thanks, love the use of more than one color ribbing. Color blocked a sweatshirt, really had a quandary what color trim, and here I could have had both. But of course. Thanks for your inspiration!
Brilliant I'm excited to see what you make 😀 I would have wanted to buy them as well, those pockets on them are chefs kiss! They almost remind me of a Vivienne Westwood aesthetic 😍
Just found you and loving your channel! Thank you! - OMG you have to check out Blueprint DIY - her early stuff. The QUEEN of upcycling and sustainable fashion. She DIY's and upcycles the most creative stuff and she shows you how to do sooooo much!! Love her!
@@karlathomas7303 yes! I love her!! 😍
Who is the fun woman with the short red hair? (6:22, 8:55) Love her. Thanks for the tons of inspiration!
Me too! I think she's the designer at Nikki Chasin but She might just be a model either way I love her look! nikkichasin.com
Nope, I just looked it up she's a MODEL!! I love that!!
Thx Gini!!! That was fun! So many things to love---especially the dark "quilters triangles" on the white shirt. Love that for summer. Pattern mixing looks so fresh no
thank you Beth! According to other viewers those triangles are called either "prairie points" or "sawtooth" either way I really want to try to incorporate that idea into one of my garments.
Just saw the new Tessuti dress which has great colour blocking options. I also have the Jazz ebook on my list so I might jump in too!
Yes!! I just saw that yesterday and thought the same thing!! I ordered the e book and it's at the printer now. I'm itching for it to get here!
Okay, this is the year that I learn to sew.
YES!!!! Do it!!
@@Raven5563 🪡👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻
Great helpful tips! Thank you❤
Wowza. Just wowza. Many great looks. Loved the voluminous yellow/black plaid pants w/ cropped sweater. Like Arthur pants. Now I want in plaid or large print.
I know right!! I LOVE those pants! I was thinking of the Arthur for that idea too.
Omg. the red floral w/the blue gathered sides...have to have that. Can you or have you posted that pic anywhere? On pic looks almost like a sleeveless jacket over the red floral dress. Amazing.
I think you mean this one? If not let me know and I'll keep looking walkers.style/collections/dresses/products/yc17d-05
@@thebigsewalong Yes, that one. The colors are fabulous and the way it's blocked, it looks like layers. The view from the back made me swoon. Reminds me of Gudren Sjoden. I don't think it would be hard to find a pattern as the fabric placement will make it. I'm looking on The Fold Line now.
@ yes totally reminds me of Gudrun too!
@@thebigsewalong What do you think of the Matchy Matchy collage dress pattern? I'd like to grow the sleeves a bit.
@ that would totally work! I’ve made that dress a couple of times but it’s been awhile but I “think” adding to the sleeves shouldn’t be a problem. Have you picked fabric yet?
Thank you, Gini❤️ Great ideas and inspirations! Just made the minimalist shirt from tropical research. I love it 😍
thanks Sabine! I love that shirt!! Isn't it so good?
You are such an inspiration to me! I love that young people are learning to sew, but the whole not-your-mother’s-sewing nonsense makes me feel old and outdated. I love having someone in my age group to look up to! Golf has a Masters division, so why can’t crafts? I’ve been sewing and knitting for 40+ years. We all deserve a voice and a little credit! I also love your style! You have a brilliant eye!
Awwww! Thanks Alexandra! and I love the idea of "master class" crafts! We can call ourselves "Master Crafters" or maybe "Craft Masters" either way I like it 😂
Great inspirations! Can I ask for details about the red sweater you are wearing-it looks lovely and cozy. I have yarn for a colourful MiZZoni SWEATER by Lindsay Degen to brighten my winter. My all time favourite sewing make has to be a tiered dress using patchwork blocks of a bunch of my hubby's discarded plaid and check button down shirts plus a few thrifted ones. It really grabs people's attention and I get compliments every time I wear it and loved to be able to upcycle the fabric.
OMG are you working on that MiZZoni sweater now? I have been ogling that for a while. I think my next project will be one of her patterns, let me know how you like it, very curious as I don't know anyone who has used one of her patterns but I absolutely LOVE them! The red sweater is from Alembika but I bought it second hand a couple of years ago (off of Poshmark I think?).
Thank you, Gini! Cheers!🎉
🤗
Love your cozy red sweater, Gini!
Me, too! Did you make it? Great color on you.
@@mjemyers No MJ not this one but it's still a fave. I wear it a lot. It's an Alembika sweater I bought second hand on poshmark a couple of years ago.
I adore Ready To Sew and have made a few of her patterns. Highly recommended. I am totally smitten with the Ginko Pinnafore by Madswick. Tons of styling options, layering, reversible front to back. Just made Matchy Matchy Archer Pants and thrilled with them. Looking forward to their upcoming quilted jacket. Thanks for inspiration!
Oh thanks K3, I was wondering about her patterns. I did end up buying the Jazz e book and have sent it off for printing and I can 't wait to get it. That pinafore from Madswick is another one I've been really itching to try. I've seen some amazing versions over on insta. Have you made the Matchy Matchy recess pants? I have that pattern and just wondered if you think I need the archer as well?
@@thebigsewalong I love supporting indie designers and believe it or not when I tried putting the less 25% off code in Madswick's Shop (Maddie), it didn't work. I reached out to her on Etsy and told her. She replied right away. It was only for pattern launch in December. She then sent me another code for less 25%. I'm beyond thrilled. You may want to do the same. It's really nice because you only have to assemble the bodice pages. She tells you what size to cut the rectangles for the skirt portion. Another win! Finished Archers last week. LOVE! Made them out of light weight chambray denim with a lighter color of the same denim for the panel insert. Top stitched everything in the same color as the panel. So stinking cute! Wish I could post a picture in replies here. Believe it or not I scored a 5 yard piece of linen at Goodwill. Couldn't beleive it. Will be for the pinnafore. A fabric hog. Beware! I used to be a maniac on Insta. Quit during the lockdown and never returned to posting. For my own reasons. You can see lots of my older makes @kristimakes I hope you're enjoying your week!
Prairie points 😊 I definitely found inspiration here. Thank you.
YES prairie points is the name I was looking for! Thank you Jan 🤗
Your sound was great. There was so much information in this video thank you. I’m going to revisit this video later in the week.
thanks Gail! I'm so glad you found it helpful 🤗
Mom used to call the triangles, prairie points. She loved finishing quilt pieces with these. Color blocking in plaids and strips… some great ideas😊
thank you Cheryl, Prairie points is exactly the term I was looking for 🤗
Wow, StoneMountain fabrics are gorgeous, just looked them up, I used to live near Berkeley in another life!
I think they have such a good solid selection of fabrics, I almost always check there first when I'm looking for something specific. I haven't been to that part of the country in ages but I do love Berkeley! Had my 50th birthday dinner at Chez Panisse it was magical
I’m really interested in patchwork clothing in its different iterations. I have a bunch of boiled wool, wool blankets and shrunken sweaters that I would like to make a patchwork pullover. Also as a fledgling knitter I’ve come across the Penguono sweater by Stephen West that has some awesome possibilities.
I love the idea of using up those boiled wools etc in something patchwork. I've never made a Stephen West sweater but his sweaters are amazing. I've always wanted to make one now hmmm you've got me thinking I might have to go for it.
Prairie points! That's the name I was taught for the triangles.
Yep that's what I was trying to think of, Thank you!!
My absolute favourite was the first one with the stripes and plaids those trousers are gorgeous ❤️ would love to see if you make something from the jazz ebook from ready to sew....I love their patterns but haven't made anything from them yet, I think the dungarees would be really cute. Thanks for another great vlog Gini 😊
thanks violet I ordered the Jazz e book and it's at the printer now. I'll keep you all posted on my progress. I love those first pants so much I only narrowly avoided buying them because I found them right before Christmas and my budget was already accounted for but ..... it was hard to pass them up 😂
Sawtooth pattern or edge is what you are referring to on quilts. For another way to make a bold border or edge, look at seminole patchwork. Its basically strips of fabric you sew together, cut up and rearrange into very graphic geometric patterns.
well thanks Cathy I'll have you know I spent the rest of the weekend trying to dig myself out the the "seminole patchwork" rabbit hole you sent me down!! 🤣🤣🤣I found a couple of tutorials here on UA-cam on really simple seminole patchwork and now I really HAVE to try it. Thanks (really!) for suggesting that I've never seen it before and I'm totally sucked in!!
@thebigsewalong it's pretty easy to get sucked in because it's fabulous! I first saw it in the 70s and now I think I need to dive back in again for clothes 😂
It looks like the bold details have been done in a sawtooth trim. I like that idea, even just as an accent at a henline.
A couple of other viewers suggested Prairie Points? Either way such a cool idea for a hem right?
@thebigsewalong Prairie Points end up a bit heavy (since they are folded squares)for most clothing but it could be.
@@charlottemccaig578 Oh right that totally makes sense
Am I missing the link to Faith's upcycling?

You are incredible!!! I can't say enough about how awesome your undies and bras are, your sensational dress and.. damn gal, that red lippy looks sensational! Happy New Year and thank you Gini, as always, for your inspiring and delightful videos! (and good luck with the serger! That breaks my heart, but hopefully it can be mended easily.)
thanks Georgie!!🤗
Hi Gini! I love your dress and would love to watch a video about the making. ❤
thank you Sabine, I will get that together in the next couple of weeks 🤗
Thank you, Gini! Happy New Year!🎉 Super cute! And the dress, too! Congrats on the bespoke undies! ❤
thank you Robyn!
Fantastic raising that much for Faith. Love the monopoly undies. I’ve managed to get a couple skirts sewn and I’m going to start cutting out and fitting a pattern. Hopefully I can get a muslin made before next week. Also need to get my dusting of furniture done and give the bathroom and kitchen a little wipe down. Surgery for gallbladder is Tuesday the 14th. Just want to get it over with but not looking forward to being down awhile and not feeling like sewing or doing anything for awhile. It will pass though and I’ll be doing things soon.
thanks Victoria. Cleaning does not sound fun but I guess we all have to do it 😂 good luck on your surgery hopefully your recovery will be quick and you'll be back to sewing in no time! 🤗
Happy New Year Gini! Love the dress! The color catchers have worked really well for me. I found a few inspiring garments on Pinterest that I was going to ask you about ideas for patterns. Thank you for all the inspiration you give here on your channel!
thank you Kathe!! Feel free to text me any of your Pinterest ideas. I'm always looking for more 😂
Your EH dress is great! I love the tee shirt & such a smart re-use. (Logging it in my idea book :) thx!!!) I went down the Mary Funt/Cloning Couture rabbit hole over the holidays & it inspired me to use some tailoring techniques to make The Assembly Line Car Coat with an Atelier Brunette gab. I'll use fusible, but am going to try making my own shoulder pads and MAYBE hand worked buttonholes. The gabardine is soft, so...maybe. Re tee shirt refashion, I'd be interested in seeing your seaming techniques for jerseys/knits. I've not had success trying to do any style seaming on a jersey (ie color blocking, princess seating, etc) possibly because i don't have a server? IDK. Thanks so much for the info & inspo Gini!!!!! Good luck w/the server. :)
Wow Beth that Car coat will be FAB!! I'll try to include some stitching suggestions for knits when I get this video up. Probably in the next couple of weeks. Let me know how you get on with the coat!
Great dress, I ran out of fabric for a turtleneck, so the back now has a yoke made of a matching quite well old tee shirt motif, it was way too big for me, but I loved the image, like yours, and eager to sew it up. My inspiration is to stay warm right now, all the cozy knits and flannel! Corduroy.
Nice way to save a project!! Yeah I hear you on the flannel, corduroy etc 🥶
Hey Ginny - you didn’t ask, but if you ever want to treat yourself to a super-comfy, no-clasp bralette that feels light as a feather, try the sheer bralette from “Eby.” I have sensory issues and I forget I have it on! Pricey but worth it.
Totally with you on not really being a going out gal and needing to bother about their shape and direction!! Haha. Your pullover bra makes are fantastic! My new year now feels like it has begun, you are back! Just making a smart black Ilford jacket x
Oh cool! Are you making the short version? is there a long version? I think so but I've only seen the short one made up.
@@thebigsewalong Hi Gini. Making the short version, so far it looks crisp and good but I am attempting to line it, grrr, I am8 a cotton or linen person and there have been rather a lot of swear words sewing the satin lining.., frays, moves, does nothing I want! So having a break before next step, attaching it! X
@ ooooo sally I really feel your pain on this one those lining fabrics just make me CRAZY!!!
Love, love your style. So quirky and fun. Broken serger sucks. Anything that stops me sewing stresses me out😮! I wouldn’t have a clue how to fix it. Good Luck getting it sorted. Happy New Year and Happy Sewing. 😊 Lynne
thank you Lynn!
Ummm, you are way too cool, Gini! Loooove your dress! So clever and creative ❤🎉
🤗🤗🤗
Happy new year, Gini! Your Edith Head dress turned out great, as did your bralettes. I, too, have been looking for a bralette pattern and will check out this one. Do you find the seam across the center front of the bralette to be at all irritating? Your hair looks fantastic!!
No! Remarkably that seam isn't bothersome at all. The bralette is completely lined and that seam is enclosed so I'm assuming that's why it works?
@@thebigsewalong Thank you so much for replying! I may have to give this pattern a try.
Happy New Year, Gini! I love your new dress and would like to see how you made it.
thank you!! I'll work on getting that video together in the next week or so.
Happy New Year, Gini! I loath underwire as it stabs me in the ribs. The only elastics that bother me are in the legs of some underwear! I really have to watch what I wear in undergarments. I had one brand of underwear I used to purchase that was amazing! Unfortunately, since COVID, I cannot find it. I was amazed how comfy the fabric was to wear. I think most women will relate to undergarment issues. That dress is soooo fun😊❤ I just love what you made! I’d love to see a video on the dress😊 You may have loosened a screw inside the serger. I had something happen last year with mine and I went into panic mode. As it turned out, a screw had worked loose inside and was an easy fix. I had it cleaned while it was in the shop.
Oh yeah some of those underwear elastics are horrible! I'm working on the video for that dress and should have it up soon. As for my serger, turns out that's exactly what happened! I ended up taking it in to the shop and the guy there fixed it in about 10 minutes! Boy was I in a panic though 😂
To combat bra irritation…I put the elastic band on the outside of the bottom edge, so it is just the fabric against my skin.
well that's a good idea! Never thought of it but I'm going to give it a try! thanks!
Happy New Year Gini! I can see why you're so excited about your dress. It's adorable!!! I can never go back to retail undies and will buy the bralette pattern. Thanks for the recommendation.
Now that I have the undies down I don't think I can go back either. Hope you like the bralette it's definitely a fave for me.
Love the dress and always love the red lipstick! Just half finished a shirt that I hate-the color/print is awful on me. So… thanks for the pantie inspiration the shirt knit will be perfect for underwear.
😂😂😂 the print/color won't matter then!
That dress is fabulous! I’d love to see how you made it, especially as you’ve combined the different types of fabric so beautifully. All the sympathy with the eczema - what a miserable place to have a perma-patch! I had one of those in my right ear for over 20 years, though I finally managed to get rid of it. Still get outbreaks on my hands, arms and feet from time to time. And have a constant itchy spot on my back, but under the straps of my bra, so pull-on wouldn’t be any better. That bralette is very cute though!
thank Hallie, I'm working on a video for the dress now and should be able to finish it in the next week or so. Ouch! eczema in the ear sounds AWFUL! Mine is mostly on my shins and elbows these days but this patch on my back is a beast 😠
Great to see you back Gini! Happy new year 🎉
thanks Rosey!!🤗
❤ fantastic on your donation to Faith. I think have the exact same problem with my bras! I have four some inexpensive ones but the blasted pads bunch or come out in the wash , I might try this pattern. I like a wider shoulder strap though, I’ll have to figure that out. That dress is amazing and I would like to see how you did that. Happy new year 🎆
thank you Jan!! I think it would be pretty easy to widen the straps on this bralette. Another viewer mentioned a bralette from Muna and Broad can't remember the name of it at the moment but It has wider straps and she said it's really supportive so maybe look that one up? I'm working on a video for the dress now 🤗
Happy New Year Gini, I love your Edith Head dress. Just wondering if anyone has a coverstitch machine and how much use they get out of it.
Thanks Vanessa! I use my cover stitch machine pretty frequently, however, I also sew a LOT of knits. I use it for hemming all knits and often at the neckline as well. If you sew a lot of knits I think it's worth having ( I have a Brother cover stitch and I think it cost me around $400 about 4-5 years ago). If you don't sew knits often then it's absolutely not needed. You can do all the knit stuff with a twin needle on your regular machine. Hope that helps.
