Bonsai Science
Приєднався 20 січ 2022
There are TWO major components of being successful with your journey into bonsai. Both the aesthetic art form and the horticultural science. My goal is to increase the horticultural scientific knowledge base to the growing population of hobbyist bonsai practitioners to increase the health of your tree and your success through your journey.

Candice, Where have you been for the last year?!? I have been bouncing between channels listening to mostly generalizations as to pruning, repotting, fertilization, the list goes on. The specifics that you are providing are kind of "Ah-ha" moments but really pulls the big picture together. I am trying to become a horticulturist first as my journey begins with bonsai and your information is invaluable...Looking forward watching the rest of your videos...Thanks for sharing...
I was very fortunate to have a Montessori school open up in my backyard- a church behind the house. My youngest daughter attended that before kindergarten and then after 1/2 of kindergarten. Best time in school for her. She was doing multiplication and putting together advanced Lego sets by 1st grade. Then plateaued and was bored in 1-3rd grade..and we had scissor adventures too. She decided to be like her grandpa (hair stylist) and cut her own hair. Needless to say, she looked like a boy for a while! She turned out fine and is now 20 and still loves putting things together.
Heck I'm over 50 and still pee on trees. I never grew up!
It is encouraging to see that with proper learning and practice, we can create art with basic materials from the box stores. Thank you for sharing.
I like it a lot . Nice job . I just got one .
what about the big huge willow trees that weep all the way down to the ground?
What about them?
Candice, it’s the 7th of August, 2024 and I am now the proud owner of this piece. I will take it into the future as carefully as you started it on its journey. Thank you, and thanks to @Dave’sBonsai for entrusting it to me.
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai I knew it was on its way!
Such a great video, I’m so glad i found your video before my first dawn redwood arrives. So much knowledge and insight in your video. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge!
😂funny
Hello. I love your content and enthusiasm. I have a DR and I’m concerned that it will not lignify before winter. Can you tell me why I do not see the golden color on the branches? It still looks like new growth.
Hello
Lots of detailed and useful information here, thanks for sharing your experience to save us some mistakes!
Hello from Houston, at the time of this video how old would you say you tree was?
Love the follow up on this bridge PA. What happened in 24?
How about a follow up on this bridge PA
Hi Candice, really useful video. May I make a suggestion; you give great direction on how and when to prune, and you show where the cuts should take place. If you could show video of you making the cuts, and the before and after, this would help solidify the learning. Thanks.
Beautiful tree, I love mine, grew it from a seedling, He's about 7 years old now. I prefer patio Bonsai so it's about 2 1/2 feet and I love its natural shape so much I've never shaped it as It's perfect to me. I'm afraid of losing it I think I would be afraid to mess with it too much lol.
Really delighted that your good and well, caring for bonsai and more importantly yourself. Be happy, live your life and reach your goals, or try at least, inspirational 👍🏾
Hey Candice, i don't want to be a pest but, what does it mean if the frawns aren't fully extending. Mine are kinda curly. I'd love to send you a pic of it if possible. If not i understand.

Hey Candice! I've been growing my own Dawn Redwood forest. I've been so afraid to touch it this season fearing I'd ruin it. Then i thought of your video that I'd watched awhile back. I'm so glad i waited, and now feel a bit better about moving forward thanks to you! I really miss your videos, along with the knowledge i gained from watching them. I hope you, and your family are doing well. Like the last comment, if you ever decide to return, I'd immediately tune in! Peace ✌🏿☮️
Definitely will have some video updates!
Hi Candice. It’s the 17th of June, 2024, and I’m getting ready to prune my DR forest. I prepped the 3 year old trees in pond baskets for an additional year, and then hard pruned them above and below ground before planting the forest. The trees are ready for their first pruning and thinning of the season after the first flush of growth. I had to re-watch this episode. It is still the most comprehensive primer on DRs out there, and I thank you for leaving it (and your channel) up. I’m a fan of @Dave’s Bonsai, so I can still see how your forest has developed. I don’t know if you still read the comments, but if you do, thanks again and enjoy your new direction. If you ever make it back to Bonsai, know that I’ll be watching.
Well said.
I had a thought that keeping the tree upright could work with grow lights shining from below or with it sitting on a mirror with some kind of shade over the top.
Asking about bald cypress because they are so similar. When deciding it's time to prune, how red does the branch have to be? A lot? Just A little? I have fronds that have bifurcated and they are turning color, but not entirely hardened. BTW, I have attached the five rules in my Bonsai Album database. Thanks.
It would be good to know what show this was from. Thanks for posting!! Mats H
Mn Bonsai show
Thank you!!!! I enjoyed the video. Anything with Peter is good to watch. Happy growing!!!
Just wire them up bonsai style, should do it now wile branches are not to thick. Unless your going to prune then wait for the knew growth and wire up
If you have grown a willow you may understand why wiring doesn’t work the best on these trees
Lots of great info and shared experience- thanks from northwest uk
find a sad one
Where is part 2!?!? I am rooting a weeping willow right now and need to know if this worked😢
It works great - there are updates- and I currently have the windswept willow now planted in a different position to now weep the tertiary growth this spring
I wonder if simply turning a grow light upside-down would work instead of the tree itself.
Thanks for the great info. Very well explained 👍
Great info and that display of trees is beautiful. Now I have to make a new oval pot. 👍🫶😉
Natural clay?
Any pointers for the redwoods? I have a dawn.
great info, thanks , lovely forest you have there
I would LIVE to have this all in writing for future reference! Fabulous info. Thank you.
Wire it
Like a bonsai. The best way to do it. I’m sure
Works for me
Rookie here. Does this info roughly translate to the Coastal Redwood? Going to be my first shot at bonsai!
Two trees + two upside down buckets = no results or conclusion. Did it work? I want my 25 minutes back!
So go see the follow up videos- it worked big time
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Not Only a Master with Bonsai, but also a Master at developing your Body also🏆 You look Amazing Candice!😊 🥰 Keep up the Good Work!! 🌹
did this work? :-)
Will you water it everyday ? And how long will you cut it off?
Can you apply to pruning Coastal Redwoods or is this specific to dawn redwoods?
Thanks for this video! It’s awesome!! I just bought my first BB today and I love it. I think it’s a little late to do too much pruning or to repot but I’m excited
This was SO helpful thank you!
So here I am, a 62 year old man appreciating the expertise on Bonsai, thinking to myself in the 5 rules for Dawn Redwoods, “ Hmmm.. she’s pretty, wish she’d smile more”. Then thought I’d look ahead to see about updates to how the Redwood forest was coming along. Then “BAM”! A year later, and here I’m watching ….. well, there is a lot of smiling. And a LOT of “back budding” …😂. Hey, good for you, and congrats. Hope you’re successful in whatever you do. I would like to ask an opinion about Dawn Redwoods whenever it might be convenient. 🏆
Shoot your question ❤️
@@Candice.BonsaiScience How nice, thanks! I’ve got two seedlings I’d bought last year, only 1 year old, but wintered over very well, and growing with vigor. At what point should I think about reducing the apex to keep energy going toward the bottom branching? Mine are only a foot tall, but I know you emphasized not letting it get tall just to thicken the trunk, and I know I’m no where near to worrying about that yet. I just didn’t want to waste energy of growing the top at the expense of the bottom, but also didn’t want to damage such young trees. Also, debating getting 3 or more seedlings and making a small forest similar to yours, or just have 2 singles. Not a question per se, but feel free to offer a suggestion. Thanks again! Btw, your videos on how to properly grow and train these are the best sources of info on UA-cam and the entire internet, bar none. 👍
At that age let it go wild all year this season and potentially next season also and do an aggressive cut down in fall after the leaves start dropping
What about an upside down training pot on top of another to keep the soil intact then use submerging to water it 🤔
I think the idea needs a bit of work but over all the idea is there
Has anyone ever tried to grow one upside down 😅 moments later you said it
Loved the video Candice, great trunks and nebari!!!
