July Wrap Up 📚 What I Read Last Month
Hi, Stacey! You inspired me to take the Enneagram test. I was so surprised, albeit pleasantly, by my type I won't even mention it until I read some more about it. Jake, I did see the Mystic River movie a long time ago and all I really remember is that Sean Penn made me cry, like he often does in movies. Dare I say I have more fun watching your videos than I do reading the books! Thank you both! 😀
Such a great book haul! I haven’t heard of a lot of these but I am so excited to read the reformatory. It’s also a 5 star prediction for me!
Book Three?! Do not give a series a THIRD chance, come on now!
I’m not a big fan of dreams in books either so I get it! Great video!
Yay! Glad to know I’m not alone! 💗 Do you also not really visualize your own dreams or visualize in a way that isn’t as realistic as real life? Or do you have other reasons for not enjoying them in books? 🙂
@@TheChapterConundrum My dreams are super realistic and terrifying. 😂 I have seen a couple of books that did dreams well but it’s rare. I REALLY hate when I’m reading along and get really into the story and then it’s like “Oh it was just a dream”. 🙄 It just very much depends on how it’s done but it’s hard to do dreams well and make it work. More often than not it just messes up the flow of the book and takes me out of the story.
Agree on Dead Silence, I really disliked that one once it got to the reveal. It's also super close to the plot of a videogame I enjoyed so that didn't help. 😂 I feel like I had more books that I just didn't love like I wanted to than truly bad books in 2024 but my least favorite was definitely Thrum by Meg Smitherman. Just not my jam at all.
Glad to hear I’m not alone on those feelings! 😂 What video game was it? I don’t mind spoilers 😊 Disappointing ones can sometimes be just as crushing but at least you weren’t reading a ton that you hated! I haven’t heard of Thrum!
@@TheChapterConundrum The videogame was Dead Space, it felt like Dead Silence was trying to be a more scientific version of the reveal in the game. I've seen a lot of 4 and 5 star reviews for Thrum so I am probably the one with the hot take 😂but I just hated the writing style.
I cannot agree more about dead silence!!
Glad to know I’m not alone! 🤣 Probably my least favourite reveal ever lol.
@TheChapterConundrum Haha easily top 5 worst reveals
Dang, I still have Happy Place on my physical TBR 🙈
Oh no 😂 well maybe you won’t have the same complaints about it that I did or maybe it will be easier to DNF and unhaul if you try it and have similar complaints 😂
I have such mixed experiences with Emily Henry. Do I keep coming back anyway? Of course lol.
lol what have been your likes and dislikes by her so far? I wonder if we align? 😂
@@TheChapterConundrum here is my ranking: 1. Beach Read 2. Funny People 3. Book Lovers 4. People You Meet On Vacation 5. Happy Place What’s yours?
@@ianthereaderVery Solid Ranking! Mine is 1 Funny Story 2 Book Lovers 3 Beach Read 4 People We Meet on Vacation 5 Happy Place
A new life goal of mine: recommend Stacey a magical realism book she loves.
There is one that I have given a 4 star rating to but it had loose rules and didn’t feel random + the character experienced it/reacted which is why it worked for me. It’s The Astonishing Color of After by Emily XR Pan
Jake, I gave Mystic River two stars, so you should like it 😂
Bahaha, I'll have to let him know! 😂
Blackwing is one of my all time favorites 😂
I knew I had heard several people with good tastes talk about it! ❤ I just completely gapped that you were one of them when we were filming! 🙈
@@TheChapterConundrum lol, no problem. I hope you enjoy it!
@@trinforeman54 Thanks! Me too! 🤞
Love your T-shirt, Stacey!! And oooh so many good steals, there are quite a few books in here that have been on my TBR for way too long as well. Hope you all enjoy them. And good luck with managing the home library madness lol 🤣🤣
Thanks! I love that whatever material it is it's quite soft as well plus that it's oversized ♥ Ohh nice! It'll be fun to see how we both end up feeling about them eventually! 😁 Thanks! We did manage to get them all on the shelves but a few things got put behind other books and I definitely turned some of my romance paperbacks sideways to stack more on there! 😂
Here's what I read My song by harry bellefonte memoir Be my baby by ronnie spector memoir The true love experiment by christina Lauren Real love by alexis hall Wild eyes by elsie silver Resurrection walk by Michael Connelly Only for the holidays by abiola bello A second chance in new port Stephen by tj Alexander Just for the summer by abby Jimenez Blackwood farm by Anne rice book 8 in the vampire chronicles
Awesome! The True Love Experiment & Just For The Summer are both on my radar and I'll hopefully get to them eventually! 🎉
@TheChapterConundrum I give both books ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ totally worth a read
Awesome video! Those little free libraries can be dangerous. 😂
Thanks! Don't I know it haha! Especially when Jake just comes home with things for me without my knowledge 😂
Oooh, is the Tessa Bailey a new one? I like her too 🥰 And yes, I’m so predictable 🤣 Awesome haul. Lots to read 🥳
It's a backlist title (2021 iirc) and is a Christmas romance set in Manhattan I think! ahaha Predictable is good! I'm excited to dive further into the Green Rider series this year and now I have it all except for book 7 (which is fine since I mostly have mmpb + the small hardcovers for the extras) so I don't really want the huge hardcover to be really mismatched!! ♥😂 I hope they make a mass market for it eventually 🤞 I know after covid a lot of publishers stopped wanting to print them. I'm still waiting on a massmarket edition of Outlander 9 too 😢 Definitely so much to read! I'm hoping to have a very cozy low key winter! 😁
Definitely a big stack of books, wish you luck in making room for them but sounds like lots of good reads. Ooh I'm excited to hear thoughts on Beyond Redemption! Had a local friend recommend it to me but I haven't gotten to it yet. And I'll be curious to hear both of your thoughts on Blackwing. I liked but didn't love it but it has such a great and creepy world.
Yes, we were spoiled for sure! ❤ We did eventually make room for them but had to put a few books behind other books and turn others sideways to make bigger stacks! 😂 I'm definitely curious about Blackwing and will get there eventually! 😁
This video is basically you guys bickering like you’ve been married for decades….oh, and books.
lol yup! 😂 We like to bug each other but it's all in good fun! 😊
Love all the Co Ho books. Ugly Love is my favorite. It's not a life changing book, but it is quick and a sweet story. :)
I definitely need to delve into more of her books! I love when a book can just entertain me and she definitely seems to do that well so far! 😊
I am definitely team Short Chapters. 😂
Short Chapters make a book fly by so much more quickly! 🥳
I keep thinking about Defending Jacob, may have ro read it eventually too. 😂
Ohh I'd highly recommend! It's not my typical kind of book and for the first chunk of it I thought it would just be a bit of an average read but I ended up having a great time with it!
Part of Your World and Mystic River are both on my TBR too. :)
Awesome! Here's hoping we both enjoy them! I think Shutter Island will be my first foray into Dennis LeHane due to Ian's love for it though! 😂
I will be very surprised if the Reformatory is not a five star
Me too! Especially since so many people with similar horror tastes to Jake have really enjoyed it!
Not kidding about a large haul, ha. This one video has more physical books than I bought all last year. Lots of really cool stuff from the look of it! And, well, you know how I feel about Belly of the Bow 😂
Definitely! 😂 It's fun being married to another avid reader with overlapping tastes during holidays like this because I feel like I've gotten even more books than were directly gifted to me since I have interest in some of his haha! 😂👌
Good on you for starting the year off without so much buddy read pressure hahah. The ones you are participating in do sound super fun though! Hope you start the year off on a high note 🤩
Thanks! It's about time I put my foot down so I don't get overwhelmed or behind this year! 😂 So far I've started the year off strong with a 4 and 5 star read! I'm also in the middle of Malice and it may be a 5 as well!! 👀
I'll join you for Faithfull and the Fallen
I'm in the middle of Malice now actually! The liveshow for book 1 is on Jan 12th so aiming to have it finished before then! I'll message you on discord with the readalong details! :)
I’m not doing the read along, but I am trying Malice again. You might be smart to do it physically, and maybe I’ll grab that version too.
I'm in the middle of it now and loving it 😁 I've been taking notes as I read so I have plenty of theories and am making a few possible connections too! It's a really fun experience so far for that reason. The version I have is from a box set without a box on amazon and it's like UK sized paperback except very floppy still! 😍 It has the UK spelling of Valour so that it wouldn't look weird to me (since I'm used to the Canadian spellings with U) or have a yellow spine on only that one like so many US editions haha! The downside is it doesn't match the height of my other Gwynne but at least it's pretty! 😂
I haven't fully ironed out my January TBR, but I am focusing on These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant, A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston, and The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. I also have Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson, not sure how much I twill get read before it goes back on the 7th. My TBR is usually dependeing on what library books that I have checked out and how soon they have to go back.
Some great picks on your TBR & love that you make heavy use of your library! 😁 I've heard really good things about These Silent Woods but haven't read it yet myself!
That's such a fun gifting experience! Really love that idea. Good to know about Babel, I've had it since it came out but have been reluctant to pick it up since I'm not sure if I'll enjoy it.
Definitely a really fun gift experience! 😁 Glad to be able to help set your expectations accordingly! 😄
Yay for a great reading month 🥳 December was great for me. I definitely read a lot between the holidays 😝
Love that! 😁 I need to go and watch your wrap up! Saw it drop yesterday but have been busy 😅
The Writing Retreat was great, you just read it wrong…😂
🙄 Do you expect me to dignify that with a proper response? 😂
I'm also planning to read city of brass for a buddy read with overlyaverageben. And I am gonna try to get to Locke lamora but I don't know if I will finish everything else.
Yay! I did remember after the fact that he has a readalong of the trilogy on his & Grace's discord as well on the same schedule so I'll definitely have to pop in there to discuss with you guys! 😁 You're smart to only commit to a couple of reads instead of overcommitting and falling behind like me! 😂
Okay you always look good, but girl you are glowing in this video!! 🤩 Anyway, these sound like lovely goals. I really hope setting boundaries with the buddy reads/readalongs will be beneficial for your enjoyment. And oh gosh I had no idea about the changes to Everand... I hope those don't come over to The Netherlands for a while yet because my library system here is awful so idk what to do without Everand!! 🥲 Happy reading for 2025 🥰
Aww thank you!! ❤ I did get some new skincare stuff for Christmas that I wanted to try out and have been good about using it so far so that might be the reason? 😏 I got the Prequel Gleanser with Sacicylic Acid as well as their anti redness serum 😊 and I did my makeup for this one (sometimes I do and othertimes I don't bother 😂) I hope I can stick to all of them! 🤞I think that limiting the readalongs will help so that I'll quit being behind if I have a really slow reading month(s) again! 😅 I've noticed that Everand on the Canadian side removed the banner with the new account type as well as removed the new account type listing from the change plan page (they had both of those up even though you couldn't switch over to it yet) so I'm hopeful they had so much backlash with the change in the US that they're reconsidering it! 🤞 I have heard Storytel is good and they're UK based I think so that might be a decent alternative for you? I think they started as a way to mainly get various European translations for audiobooks though so I have no idea what their English vs other language selections are like.🤔 Happy Reading back at you! 😁
@@TheChapterConundrum taking notes on the beauty routine hahahah Fingers crossed the changes don't go through on Everand. And Storytel is okayish, but they feature way more Dutch titles than English titles and I don't read in my native language anymore 🥲
@@esmayrosalyne I'm very new to the skincare routine so don't have any real feedback yet! Usually I just do spf moisturizer in the daytime and spf lip chap if i know i'll be outside a while on a sunny day + the occasional exfoliating scrub in the shower lol. Ahh I wondered if that might be the case for Storytel in EU. It would be interesting to talk to someone in the US using it! Wonder if it would be a lot of Spanish titles or mostly english 🤔
@@TheChapterConundrum I need to be better at using spf products to protect my skin oops... And oh yeah, I haven't really heard much feedback about Stroytel outside of my own country so that is an interesting thought
I wasn't very good about using spf when I lived in Canada so I don't blame you 😂 it's only now that I live in a much more sunny place that it's easier to remember!
Sounds like a great January ahead of you. I love Lies of Locke Lamora and Malice! I also have Shutter Island on the shelf, which I need to get on asap - the movie is amazing.
Here's hoping! I had a mixed bag in December so it would be nice to enjoy a lot more of the books I read in January!😂 Locke Lamora is definitely great once you get into the story and I'm really looking forward to Malice as well! Also good to know the movie is worth checking out once I've finished the book! 😍
Great plans Stacey! I’m excited to get to Malice sometime this year. I also want to read Different Seasons someday. I won’t be doing readalongs though. 😢 I’m currently reading Shogun lol.
I don't blame you on not doing readalongs 😂I could use a little more of that willpower in my life, lol. I enjoy the buddy read chat experience though so I don't think I'll ever quit them completely. 😅 Ohh how are you liking Shogun? I've seen tidbits of the show when visiting my sis and my brother in law had it on in the background - looks interesting for sure!
These all seem like great goals!
Thanks! Here's hoping I can stick to them! 🤞
So excited for when you disappeared. Probably my next book. And I have the audio, so I can also finish my puzzle while listening to it 🤣
I'm keen to check it out for sure! Will be fun going back to his debut and to try one of his domestic thrillers for me. Added win that you can couple the audio with your puzzle! 😎
Shutter Island movie was great so I need to read the book ASAP!
Good to know that it's worth the watch once I finish the book! 🥳
Daevabad is great. Nice list!
I definitely enjoyed City of Brass and am keen to continue the series! Some great tidbits of interest in Alizade's POV for sure! 😊
Are you surrreeee I couldn't offer you another buddy read? lol
Oh I'm sure. 🙃
I already finished 1 book in January the teacher by frida McFadden unfortunately i didn't enjoy this book Tbr my name is Barbra by Barbra Streisand memoir You like it darker by Stephen king A monsoon rising by thea guanzon Thunderhead by neal shusterman
Her books seem to be a mixed bag for sure! I'm most excited for you to experience Thunderhead! It's a slow build but such a great one! 😁
Hannah Bonam-Young is a great writer, and I love that she is Canadian. :)
Yes!! I'm reading Out on a Limb now and really enjoying it! ❤ The banter is perfect! 👌 I also love that she's Canadian!! I can't really put my finger on why specifically but the vibes just feel like home which is kind of funny since Southern Ontario/city vibes are different than up north.😂
@TheChapterConundrum i get it. :) I am in Eastern Ontario, and I love Carley Fortune's books too, they always feel like home, even though one was set kind of near here, one in Toronto and area and one in PEI. LOL
@@CulinaryCrime I've read 2 of Fortunes books so far (both the ones set in Ontario that are out) and one I liked, the other I loved 😁 I have yet to read her PEI one though it's on my shelves! I did notice her new release in 2025 is back to Barry's Bay as well 😉
I am starting When You Disappeared today. I also plan to read Different Seasons and Kill for Me, Kill for You. Hoping to get to them all. :)
Love these goals!! I’m so sad about Everand!!
Thanks! I'm so sad about Everand too! I'm hoping they had so many cancellations in US that they don't end up switching their model in other countries for a while so I can keep it longer! 😂🙈 From what I've seen around social media the response to their new model hasn't been great... and the Canadian one used to have a banner saying the new model was coming soon + that option was shown in account types even though you couldn't change over yet but now the heading and the account type listing are gone so..😅🤞
Great list of goals Stacey! That’s crazy about the Everand change. I don’t like that either.
Thanks! I hope I can stick to them all! 😀 The Everand change is so sad for sure. The banner talking about it and the account type listing for the new type have been removed from the Canadian version as of right now so I'm hoping they had so much backlash/cancellations in the US when it rolled out that they're reconsidering! 😅
My goal is to read 11/22/63 😂- I am reading the sample on Kindle right now. Also, I want to read some of the books on yours and Jake's read alongs. I just read The Boy, the mole, the fox and the Horse inspired by you. I absolutely love the illustrations! I have a bit of a compulsion to get outside and that interferes with my reading goals. Falling asleep during the last hour of my day while reading doesn't help much either. Thanks for inspiring me to increase my reading!
11/22/63 was a happy surprise for me when I picked it up! I didn't expect to love it but ended up really enjoying it. :) I'm so glad you picked up The Boy, The Mole, the Fox and the Horse! ❤ It's such a sweet one for sure! I did the audiobook when I read it so actually missed out on the illustrations 🙈 I say enjoy the fresh air for sure! Being outside somewhere quiet and peaceful is something I miss from home now that I live in a city! 😂 I still get out often to walk the dogs around the neighbourhood but it's just not the same as being out in the middle of nowhere!
@@TheChapterConundrum The illustrations are super sweet - some are quite detailed, beautiful and colourful. The font is like handwriting. It's a lovely little book! 😍 Thanks, Stacey! ☺
My goals are to read 80 books Read more male memoirs like al Pacino memoir Billy dee Williams and val Kilmer book's finish the kingsbridge series by ken follett
Awesome goals! 🥳
I'm gonna keep you busy? 😏
Yup, you're one big distraction 😂
Oh, I'm excited that you're going to read Fourth Wing 😂
Thanks! I'm looking forward to it! I feel like it will be a nice palate cleanser! 😊
@TheChapterConundrum it's such a fun book.
I made one of these last year without any strategy, so good on you for making those categories hahah. Hope all your 5-star predictions come true and that your sequels live up to your expectations 🤩 Especially eager for you to read Jade War and Dark Age!!
Thanks! I'm hoping that being more intentional with this will help me feel like I'm making some decent progress on some of my reading goals! 😊 Aww I hope my predictions and sequels hold up too; wouldn't that be amazing! 😍 I really do need to quit putting off the books I know I'm going to enjoy! 😂
Hope you’ll enjoy Fourth wing! It was cheesy but a lot of fun. I’m still contemplating if I want to reread the entire green rider series for book 8. 😬 since we do t have a set release date, it makes it a bit harder to plan. Currently anticipating September, but who knows 🤷🏼♀️ if I read all of them, Blackveil would be due in May.
Thanks! I'm looking forward to cheesy tropey fun when the mood strikes! 😁 Might be a great palate cleanser between some epics! 😅 The struggle is real haha, I have a stacked TBR already but also know I would have a good time with the rereads + it's been ages since I did 1-3. I'm so torn!! 😅 Might see how Jan shapes up and how my TBR goes...
