Should We Acclimate?

In this series of videos centered on the premise that fish, as well as other aquarium critters, are tougher than we think, I want to touch on some topics that help us better understand how tough these critters really are. This video discusses acclimation. A few things I did not mention in the video regarding freshwater: In my experience, those freshwater fish that die overnight after being adde...

Marineland Penguin 125 Pro & Penguin 100 Filter Comparison and Review
i googled is it safe and it says it is, when the algae drop so does the oxygen thus can suffocate the fish not the chemicals that harm the fish
@@STOP_FAKENEWS yes, it can result in a depletion of oxygen. If you read the comments here, it is pretty clear that it is common for this product, for whatever reason, to cause livestock issues. As some have pointed out, it could be a miscalculation when dosing; however, there are better products and better methods for fighting algae and I wouldn’t use it.

I accidentally tilted the bottle while pouring the cap into the pond! All the fish disappeared and I was freaking out!!! Luckily, I knew what happened as soon as it happened and was able to look up the solution to act quickly. Thankfully, fish are fine. Switched to API’s Algaefix alternative which uses enzymes. Been dosing 2x/week for 3 weeks as well as scrubbing stone fixtures where algae collects. Not perfect, but should improve once plants cover more surface area.
Wish I had seen this before I used it, trusted Amazon reviews it killed 10 of my Tetras
this method is a guarantee for battling algae for the life of the tank
do you play the drums next to the fish tanks? doesn't that drive the fish crazy? lol
@@BackyardAquatics-o2m yes. The fish mostly don’t care as far as I can tell.
This product is the best, i only use api algaefix and never had a problem, not 1 loss in 3 years and i see results in 2 hours. Don't know what your doing wrong but I don't think it's the products fault
Is there any update on this tank? I am interested in trying it out myself but wanna see how successful others have been first
I started one too. This month. I've had small one running for over a month, but then something fell in and damaged the water and killed them all... Trying a new and bigger one now. Still have lots of questions as I've also jumped into it without ever having had or seen one for experience.
I wonder if someone using the Fluval 207 could help me. As I have limited hole openings in my fish tank and there is a lid, as well, would someone be kind enough to let me know what is the total width (or height) of the hose including the rim connector, at the point when the hose curves over the aquarium glass? I would appreciate any answer from someone who uses this filter, as I'm eager in buying it. Many thanks in advance!
i bet your fish/cats hate it when you play the drums.
@@troychampion haha. The cats do.
I'm running two tidal 110 on my 75 and its dead quiet
I am having gold severum pair around 18 months frmale is laying eggs but they are not gettinh hatch on 2nd day eggs gets white in colour Please guide me for this
@@sachinmankar4239 that means the male isn’t fertilizing them or is not properly.
@@nextdooraquatics5013 so what should I do for getting them breed
I normally have little love for skirt tetras or lookalikes, but I love the pirahna-like color of these ones! I'll have these when I finally build a red tail shark tank.
I have a tidal seachem 55 HOB filter... it wont fit on my 60 gal breeder or my 75 gal tanks because the rim around these tanks is wider then the 55 gal TANK... Are these aquaclear 55 gal filters capable of fitting around the rims of the 75 gal tank ? un-like the tidal 55 ?
@@AQUARIUMFREAK123 hi. Yes, they fit. I had a similar problem. I was going to put an acqua clear 50 or two on my 75 but they don’t fit on the rim. The 110 I have is on a 75 comfortably. It’s also a great filter. It moves a ton of water.
@@nextdooraquatics5013 Thank you, So both filter companies did the same thing ? they made the ratings for the tank gallons also rated for the rim thickness.. I have 2 tidal 55,s and i cant use them 0n my 60 gal breeder or my 75 ... this was an inconsiderate pump designs on both companies.
How does it compare with the fluval 207 in terms of noise? I have the 207 and I like is quite quiet, and I would like to thirst the eheim in different aquarium, but I am worried about the noise.
@@Ronroncho not much difference. They are both very quiet.
how bout rinsing the 2 mechanical filters in aquarium water as theres some beneficial bacteria there too?
@@isaacchong562 you can do it that way. It’s harder to get things super clean. If you are worried about beneficial bacteria I would do it that way. If that tank is mature, doesn’t matter.
@@nextdooraquatics5013 thats a valuable opinion. so if its not a mature tank, then the proposal would be better i guess.
@@isaacchong562 if it’s not a mature tank, you may may want to save as much beneficial bacteria as possible. I would not recommend cleaning a filter on a newer tank unless it’s absolutely necessary. Let it run for a few months.
What happen if the pump on the tank under or on top not working ?😅

never used this but i do use prevent algae and thats fine
I've got several of these, in both 20 gallon and 60 gallon size, some made in USA, and newer ones from China. The newer, China made 60 gallon models did make a mechanical sound that the older USA model did not. Close examination showed that the impeller on the ones made in China had a small piece of white plastic (next to the magnet) that wasn't trimmed very well, and which rubbed on the inner wall of the recess where the impeller spins. I trimmed this plastic with a knife out of the kitchen drawer, and the filter immediately became as quiet as the older USA made model, which is to say, almost completely inaudible, and deserving of the Whisper name. Both of my 20 gallon models, one USA made and the other made in China, are perfectly silent, and appear to be made exactly to the same high quality standard. Except for the minor issue with the impeller, the same applies to my 60 gallon models, there simply is no difference in the quality of construction or materials. As mentioned in the video, I also have had the rubber O-ring start to leak on a couple of these when it gets old. The fix is easy, just remove the filter from the aquarium, then remove the motor housing from the bottom of the filter. Wrap a few turns of teflon tape over the O-ring, and reinstall the motor housing. These do need to be filled with water before plugging them in, but mine have been very good about starting reliably if this is done, and restarting after power outages (they don't lose their prime like some filters). The filter pads are very economical to buy, about 60 cents each if you buy them in a 12 pack from Amazon, and you can rinse them and reuse them several times before you have to replace them. The last feature I will mention is the flow control located at the top of the suction tube. This works really well and is easy to operate. It's much better than the flow control on any other hang-on-back filter that I've used, and lets you easily turn the flow down to a trickle for feeding. Taken on a cost/benefit basis, the Whisper is very impressive.
Great vid, thanks man!
How good are Ehiem? One of my client has one with the light gray power cord.
@@Tundra-me4wt I can only speak to the classic series. They are pretty bulletproof canisters.
Well hey my friend I haven't seen you on UA-cam in a while. Never try that product. For me I prefer not to use chemicals since most my tanks are planted. I found Siamese algae eaters do the job for me. But interesting to see how well that carbon worked
@@razinfishes1918 hey. 👋 I definitely need to get back into a groove. I agree. I like using more natural means too. In this case, I had the product and it wasn’t planted so I thought, what the heck. Haha.
@@nextdooraquatics5013 yea why not! And I learned that carbon will kill it. So that's good to know
I just have severum around 2inch.. shes heavy breathing (overworking mouth open-closes) where my other fishes do fine. she seems active tho eating fine. is this normal or what should i do?
this my first time keeping severum, my friend brought me. is this happen just when juvenile?

How is this filter holding up? Are you still happy with it?
@@fvvfvbbbb yes. The 107 and the 07 series in general are tough as nails. Very happy.
How much water does it cycle an hour? I'm thinking about getting 2 for 125gal tank I'm going to sent up
@@juanandrade8733 145 gph. For a 125 I would do two 307s.
I have a 22-gallon water tank, and I can use 207, but the water flow is too big, so I can’t start it at full speed. It’s good to have the water flow down to the third level😊😊! Is it better to not put biochemical cotton in the lowest layer but put more filter materials?
@@garywong6084 I’m not sure what biochemical cotton is.
I changed the filter sponges and rocks and stuff and I added some algae fix because I had a lot of bearded algae as well. I just went to my tank and all plyvistumas were dead.
@@micheleberg4586 sorry to hear that.
Hi i have a question is this filter can fit topfin 55 gallon tank the tank has hols in the cover for there filter
@@DimonNovok hello. It will fit on the back of the tank. I’m not sure if it would fit with the lid cutouts. It would probably need modification.
Sooo, what size sump do i need for my 7,000 litre (~2,200 US gallon) aquarium?
@@TheEuropa1 you have a 2,200 gallon tank? That’s massive. I’m not sure, but it would need to be pretty big. Maybe a 150 gallon aquarium or a 125 would be big enough to accommodate a lot of media.
How would these be in a 20 gallon long, with live plants?
I use it and I have guppies and platties in a 30 gal and the same thing happened to me all my fish were on the bottom but I've never lost any fish and it did clear the alge and killed the black bearded alge

Could these be kept with bristlenose? I have a 37gal tank with aging mid-top water fish and want to get these as a replacement but theres 2 bristlenose with 5+ years left on them
@@Sly_koala absolutely. 👍
Just got one of these and a pack of Seachem Purigen to pack in.
@@JesseLay nice. Is it the redesigned version?
I think where some people might run into issues with this product is because they don't account for displacement. My tank is 190 litres, but after factoring in displacement from plants, inhabitants, substrate, the lower water level, etc., the actual water volume is only 125 litres. If I dosed on tank size alone I would've overdosed by 52%
Is it suitable for 40 gal tank only one flowerhorn fish one year old
@@hemanthdesu7125 yes, but when it gets bigger you might want a little more filtration, but you could just add a good hang on to supplement it later on.
Is it okay to clean the media out with tap water? I always thought I had to clean the media out with tank water, so I don’t damage the bio layer
@@shakaKGS yes. In a well established filter it doesn’t kill much bacteria and it’s way easier to clean out your sponges.
@@nextdooraquatics5013 going to try that for a bit and see how it goes. Thanks for the pro tip!
I saw several mistakes with the dirt mixture.

Do you think this would work with a snapping turtle pond since they go to the surface to breath?

It would be good if you put the new filter pads back in…
They have a similar attitude to tiger barbs, but still one of my top 5.
Just subscribed after watching your aqua clear video. I’m enjoying the information you have to share!
@@mwisch4 thank you.
Just to be safe just don't bother, my fish were struggling to breathe shortly after use. I did an emergency water change. For clarity, I am using API Prevent Algae which I think is a renamed product or the European product name.
They should re make this filter and just add a self priming feature then it would be perfect
