Ep 3) A Wartime Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner | WW2 History Ration Cooking | Frugal Living
I may have needed a 'swear' jar for this one! In todays episode, we test 8 wartime recipes in total (yes, 8!) to get us through another week living on British WW2 Rations. Some were fabulous, some were....vomitrocious. So grab yourself a beverage and let's spend some time tasting history together. Thank you so much for your continued support of my little channel and gastronomic experiment, it really means a lot and it helps to keep me motivated, keep calm and carry on. Happy rationing!

A tip (which I’m sure you’ve figured out!): unless you’re using it to make scramble, “dry egg” cooks and is used essentially the same as vegan “egg replacer” powder. Use that. :)

PS: for practical purposes think of a pound from the time as $50, a shilling as $2.50, and a penny as about $0.12.

Salt also helps gluten develop, important for wholemeal flour which has less gluten-developing ability than white flour.

Mediterranean food in Britain didn't become popular until the 70s thanks to cheap air travel. It was American food that became popular in the 50s and 60s.

Quirky fun - love your work and character (hope that doesnt sound creepy). I was the opposite of you as a child i LOVED peas. The trick for me as a child was keeping them on the fork. My Dad used to recite some funny saying about peas along this line " I eat my peas with a knife and honey, makes them taste real funny but it keeps them on the knife" OF COURSE my Mum would just shake her head for the implication that i should be eating from the knife ! Good days They met at the start of WW2. She was a trainee nurse and he was in the British army. They didnt like to talk about it tho.

I remember mum making mock tuna in the 70s and 80s. As a kid, I did not like it. It's definitely an acquired taste. I do remember it had tomato in. I'm 90 minutes south of the Adelaide CBD, on the Fleurieu Peninsula/South Coast. One leek in my local Coles, today, is $2.90 each. My son and I both want to go to The Queen Vic market but have to wait until November when we'll be there for the 21 Pilots concert at Rod Laver Arena.

Hope you did not toss the pea soup. Add potato, carrot, chick peas, roast pumpkin. (Flavour so much stronger...) Maybe a tiny bit of bacon or veg substitute. If you are trying to stick to rationing misery, you might only get one onion in a year, so can't add another. So lovely and warming! Oh - and barley! Great for that caramelising meat flavour - that vague umami flavour. I would love some of that soup now. But it is cold and I don't want to get out of bed. I could microwave something for 2 minutes, but my feet are voting to stay in bed... Just imagine having to go up on the roof, and fire watch, for four hours!

I don't care for turnips, but I'm a huge lover of parsnips. I would replace it with that, if available. Parsnips aren't very popular in the U.S., mostly b/c I don't think they're very well known. I discovered them in England, roasted with carrots, potatoes and beef chuck roast for Sunday dinner. WOW! The sweetest veggie I've ever tasted. LOVE your channel. Your content is very educational, clever and entertaining!

And I like that you included a price breakdown, it’s interesting to see.. cheers! :)

Guess I am far closer to being eighty than you, but I have always been frugal, as taught by my parents who survived and thrived through two World Wars. I eat a whole food plant-based diet, and yes until recently, I still had my mother's Ration Books, which were sadly stolen. I well remember going shopping with my mother as a child. In addition to taking along her shopping bags, we could walk to the store. She always took her housekeeping purse, and a hand made leather wallet containing her Ration Books. She shopped far more frequently than I do now. National Dried Milk, came in tall cans with blue printing on the side. I was born after the war, but my family had an small but highly productive garden with fruit bushes and trees, as well as veggies, and a chicken run at the bottom, for eggs. It produced enough food to share with neighbours and friends. We also had a greenhouse. Our daily salads took less than five minutes to go from garden to table, and there was a herb garden outside the kitchen window.

Conventionally grown Leeks are currently 2.49 USD in my local supermarket, it’s a bit more if you want organic (those are bundled so it’s not a straight comparison. According to the chart I got from the local farm a few years ago leeks will start being in season next month, so I’d expect the price to go down a bit as the weather cools off.

Garlic and onions - in traditional Italian cooking, you cook with one or the other. Never both. Maybe that’s why garlic is hardly mentioned as onions were preferred 🤷🏻‍♀️
