The use of the Yellow wings was ended probably by 1940 - before Pearl Harbor. (Some aircraft still had them by Pearl Harbor but were generally second line duties where camouflage was less important.) Anything considered "Front Line" was almost always repainted soon after the issue of orders. (Including planes on carriers.) The 2 color schemes in the box are one for 1938/39 and one for Midway. (The red "meatballs" were painted out after the Battle of the Coral Sea, a month before Midway.)

That's a super looking kit, and considering what I've spent on some kits, a real bargain. Nice packaging, color guides, nice instructions and great looking plastic. As a kid in the 70's I would drool over the old Monogram kit of the TBD, but was too intimidated by it.😃

This looks great so far! Personally I’ve done everything from tape to masking putty/silly putty to freehand like you show here. With a good quality airbrush and a steady hand freehand can produce excellent results. Certainly the most time consuming and stressful in my opinion, but it also looks the most realistic to my eye. It mirrors the way many real camouflage patterns were sprayed on these warbirds, by hand, with a large spray gun. Can’t wait to see the final result with the green added. I also might post shade the black if I were you so it’s not so stark against the warmer green and white tones

Hello, i liked this video you made. Well done. I think modelling as a hobby is reasonably cheap. You can start off with not that much investment in kits and accessories. Really it is up to the individual as to the level of their finished kit. If you are happy with the kit as is just painted and glued together without photo etch or weathering then it can be reasonably cheap. Plenty of bargain kits can be found on ebay or other online sites. Thanks for your videos. I look forward to seeing more.

Recent subscriber. Best of luck with the channel. Ah, the bane of every modeler. Sand, prime, sand, prime, repeat. We are our own worst critics. When it becomes a job, you might want to do something else to it. There's other things you can do, right? Landing gear, paint the engine, test fit the wings. Harry Houdini, has a video on the this and the philosophy of wabi sabi. Nothing is perfect, it is never finished and it will not last. Take a deep breath, exhale and repeat...it's just my hobby. Keep plugging along, you haven't taken up basket weaving yet. So that means you're still with us.

The older kits are great practice and great kits to make it as you want. Plus, with the cost of kits today, older kits tend to be less expensive and you don’t feel as bad if you mess something up. I don’t enter competitions. I build for fun and relaxation. As long as it looks good on a shelf or hung from the ceiling of my shop, I’m good.

Bouth colors are too dark for 1/72 scale, especially with gloss coute, you need do some highlighting and modulation with any of these both colors...

I kind of look for whatever is available in Canada that best matches the subject. I really like the Tamiya Acrylic range, and I'll even decant a few of their TS and AS paints for airbrushing. For more specific colors like the blue you have mentioned I'll look into the Mr. Color range of Lacquer paints. I like to sue those a lot as well, and they have a lot of Federal Standard colors that I can use. I don't mind testing out new paints, but those are the ranges that I like a lot, I'm very comfortable painting with them.

Everything is worth the effort when the shapes are good. In the end, if you just want to carefree put stuff together, Lego is there for you and you won't have fitting problems ever. If you were born when Modelkits were made for kids, you learned the hard way how to put together Matchbox, Frog, old Hasegawa and Heller kits trying to do the best you could. I think millenials got it too easy and now complains for everything not effortless. Kids used to work hard with files and putty and enjoyed the process of making something with their hands and skill instead of just buy expensive boxes, throw in some open glue, shake the box and take out the finished models

Similar process for me as far as picking the next project. I usually go with what I’m interested in and or “amped up” about. Helps with the motivation and makes the project more enjoyable. As far as the paint colors, I’d go with either color but still stick to a gloss coat on either. At least through the decal stage and then maybe a satin finish if you want a more worn look. I’d definitely try to avoid any decal silvering on a single color scheme though, as any flaw will show that much more

Caught your channel re-entering the hobby after a long sabbatical, it's very helpful because it is an entirely new industry now with kit prices and materials. The learning curve is hard enough , however, another problem is I have to rely on dealers on the Internet as there are no hobby shops to in my area. Do you have a favorite Internet hobby store you like to use? I have found Andy's Hobby pretty consistent and good pricing with many sales. In fact I just ordered a kit you might want to take a look at - the 1/48 Me 262 HGlll by Amusing Hobby - its is a new type of molding that helps alignment , so being new I thought I'd give it a shot - it's not too pricey, between 35-40 dollars. BTW that was a great price on the Zero. Thanks for any ideas you can send my way.

@@MakingModels11 Thanks, this really helps a lot. I agree with you on Tamiya, always reliable quality in my old days of building, there was a company called Otaki which had excellent scale quality when it came to surface detail. They sold out in 1986, however if you ever run across them, I think you would like them. I've also found Eduard to be moving up the quality ladder. Thanks again for your recommendations. Catch you on the next video

Give me the old kits any time .Monogram , Airfix , Revell . Hasagawa , Frog Etc . As long as they are reasonably accurate and give a reasonable depiction of the original who cares ? These kits were fun and enjoyable which is what the hobby is all about . The modern modellers with their rivet counting , obsession with detail , photo esch and after market accessories are welcome to take the hobby to the limits they desire. Me as an OAP modeller will stick with the older kits and the less fashionable and derided makes like Huma , PM . Models and the like and will enjoy what l construct and paint .Each to he's own as they say.

I did most of my building in the 1970s with kits whose molds were designed in the 1960s. Monogram and Revell planes, ships and armor, Lindberg for lots of odd subjects, an occasional Airfix in a bag, some rebox Entex -- all available at your local department store. I miss those cheap kits. Clunky fit? Questionable accuracy? Check and check. But they were FUN. And later in life I still enjoyed seeing how far, with scrap-material detailing and creative paint, I coukd take a cheap model.

I just noticed that the front box art for the F6F-5 has the windows behind the pilot seat, but the side art profiles don't. The front art is for an F6F-3. The -5s don't have those windows. This means nothing. It's an artistic inaccuracy. I have the F6F-5 Late in 1/48th. I wish that I would have gotten a -3, as the have more livery options. With the -5s, you're stuck with blue, or you can do a drone version in a salmon color. Unless you do a British Mk II.

You did a great job bringing out the best in this old kit! Back in the day, when model kits were becoming more detailed and sophisticated, my local IPMS chapter would have, "Out-of-the-Box Contests," where the only thing the builder could add was aftermarket decals. These contests focused on basic building and painting only. Something like your MiG-21 would have been a hands-down winner! Also, for modelers of the 1960's - 1970's, this MiG-21, (as well as the Hasegawa MiG-17, IMC's MiG-21D, and the Airfix MiG-15 and 21,) was about it for Soviet aircraft in 1/72nd scale. It was even worse for 1/48th scale modelers, who only had the ancient and undersized Hawk MiG-15. It wouldn't be until 1976 when Monogram came out with a decent MiG-15 in 1/48th scale, and Revell came out with a MiG-21PF in 1/48th scale a year later. (Though I never got the chance to build them, both Aurora and Lindberg came out with spurious "MiG-19's" in the mid-1950's, that seemed based on the German Focke-Wulf TA-183 Huckebein.) But again, pickings were rather slim . . . . I still remember the excitement in 1978 when Hasegawa came out with their MiG-25 Foxbat soon after a Soviet Pilot defected to Japan.) They would follow-up with a MiG-23, and a MiG-27, shortly afterwards. Around the same time, Czechoslovakian KP kits started appearing on hobby shop shelves near the end of the Cold War, and choices got so much better. Thanks for sharing this with us! 4th like.

Really good job. The metal finish turned out really well. I haven't tried a metal finish yet. I would be curious to see what you do with the BF109 E or the F5E Tiger II. I'm currently working on a 1/32 Dragon BF 109E-4B, that I will attempt to paint with the Geschwader Adjutant JG54 scheme, which looks intimidating, as well as a Trumpeter MiG3 Late in 1/48, both of which are black based and ready to mottle in preparation for base coats. I'm roughly at the same level as you, and I'm learning as well. Looking forward to your next build. Good luck.

Your MiG-21 turned out splendid! Not very detailed but not very expensive at all. I've done a number of these, usually I will at least superglue a pen cap in the end to stop the 'See Through' effect. Next one will get a little bit of a cockpit added, thanks to some bits left over from Eduard kits. BTW, a couple I did with the canopy painted a silver-blue mix with the gear up on old Airfix stands like they were a gate guard. Works pretty good. Have a great week!

Like the Academy F-104G Starfighter kits, this kit is a modified copy of the very early Hasegawa kit. Nothing wrong with the cheap kits. I've got about a dozen of both because I want to build a gaggle of both, since there are so many markings for them. When I first started buying my own kits, I was purchasing 1/72 MPC kits (re-boxed Airfix kits) at the local grocery store for 89~99 cents! Have fun and look forward to your finished Fishbed.
