Really interesting ….not least passed Trafalgar theatre twice yesterday on the way to/from seeing Jon Robyns at His Majesty’s (fantastic!). The promoted headlines outside all talked of “electrifying…. Phenomenal” but still left me curious what is was actually about….so now I know !

How scary or violent is it? As I'm going with young teenagers and the age has been changed from 12+ to 15+
It’s pretty gloomy and dark, and there are a few quite violent scenes with blood and flashes…so it defo isn’t the most young teen friendly show. But then it really depends if they’ve been exposed to theatre like that before.
it is decadence

I have been at the opening night (due to it being canceled sat+sun) and this was a very interesting review, as I've not been familiar with the Jamie Lloyd kind of style. Nice to hear your thoughts on it.
Thanks so much for checking it out and leaving a comment! ☺️ what did you think of the play?
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial It was very interesting, i really loved the style, the actors and everything, I just really struggled with the shakespeare english, as english is my second language. But of course I knew the story and everything beforehand, so I could still figure out what's going on
Is this a joke?
I didn’t know Freema was in this too. Too bad it’s sold out and I live across the ocean haha.
She was so good! 😍 there are some speculations that it might go to Broadway after this so keep an eye out if that’s closer to you!
😂😂😂😂😂 this is crazy 🤣😂😂
I have been checking the website and suddenly there was a 90£ ticket. Going mid June. Seen Jamie Lloyds Sunset Blvd it was sensational. Can't wait for this one, thanks for this fantastic review
YESSS! That’s what I’m talking about - happened to me too with box tickets. There are defo tickets being returned every day, it’s all about catching them at the right moment. So excited for you to go and see it, especially since you enjoyed Sunset Boulevard! ☺️ looking forward to hearing what you think of it! And thank you for your kind words and checking out my review! 🙏🏻
I should've found this review earlier...keeping it blind before watching it in person is usually a good theater kid habit until it is not. I've learnt this in a hard way Like it was my first time visiting the UK watching shows in West End but WHY And I the same felt terribly sorry for the company. The script is just unsalvagable and beyond repair. Everyone else's efforts have been wasted by the misogynistic playwright who does not even know how to write a play or portray a woman. He just projected his insecure self on Myrtle. Both the company and the audience deserve something better.
Ahh sorry you had to go through that experience unprepared. It was quite an underwhelming show and I totally agree with you that the misogynistic narrative was so off-putting.
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial Being unprepared for a show usually gives me the best, most fresh experience until this one taught me a lesson. I was struggling in act 2, expecting a plot twist, and turned out this show was just a dreadful experience that took me over two hours :( Thankfully I was healed by Matilda and Hadestown the next day. I still believe West End stands for masterpieces, hope the company can take a good break and start their new journey soon
I've been seeing so many good things about the acting of the cast in this play. The jamie lloyd style seems pretty hit or miss for people, but the performances and chemistry have been mostly universally liked. Great detailed review! The crowd looks insane for such a small area! I'm glad there'a enough security there to ensure no one gets trampled on.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! ☺️ it’s a pretty small theatre for the production of this calibre, and yes - the fans definitely stuck around to see Tom. Do you plan to go see the play?

Thank you for your review. I will travel from the Netherlands next week to see it. I was lucky enough to score a ticket, although it is a restricted view. Looking forward to it!
Oh wow! That’s a commitment! ☺️ I hope you enjoy it. I also had a slightly restricted view so needed to lean forward a bit but it was still amazing to be there and see it! Will you be seeing any other shows on the West End?
Yes, I am a fan of the musical Moulin Rouge. ;) I saw it already on Broadway with Aaron Tveit, and on West End with Jamie Muscato. Very curious how the current cast is.
@@bluedolph1n that’s great! I haven’t seen the new cast of Moulin Rouge so let me know how you like it! ☺️ and enjoy your trip to London! 🇬🇧
Great review, a special production to see. Can you remember how long you had to wait to see Tom leave the theater?
Thanks so much! ☺️ so happy to hear you’ve enjoyed it! We didn’t need to wait too long…I feel like I got out of the theatre and maybe within the next 10-15 minutes, he was out. But I feel I was slow to get out of the theatre. If you’d like to see him afterwards and get a good spot, you’d probably need to leave during the curtain call.
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial thanks Kristina, will see how we go at the end, no biggy if we miss him leaving, but love the spectacle of a big star in town haha. Seeing the show this Fri, and have loved Jamie Lloyd productions in the past, so very excited.
@@stuartclark3182 ah amazing! Let me know what you think of it ☺️ and hope you get to see him!
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial we got to see him leaving, exactly as u said didn’t need to wait long. There is such a buzz & the air is electric. I loved the show, but Jamie Lloyd can do no wrong imo 😂 can see why it has polarizing opinions tho.
I feel like tom Holland should be getting 95% of ticket sells and even that wouldn't be enough
Haha for sure, definitely making more people go to the theatre cause of him! ☺️
Wait how is he making I would assume he’s making ruffly that much including merch
Wait a min. TOM is in ROmeo and Juliet?????????
YESSSSSS ☺️ it’s a sold out play running in London until August but there are some rumours it might go to Broadway afterwards! So he’ll be playing Romeo for some time!
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial I heard it was a movie. That's why I am a bit confused 🤦♀️😅😅
@@hlubideetz7614 haha that would totally make sense tbh! This is his return to the West End - the first time since he was in Billy Elliot when he was a kid. 😍so pretty special!
@hlubideetz7614 yeh unfortunately some industry publications on twitter "announced" that he would be starring in a new production of R&J and as usual nobody read the actual article that stated it would be a west end play. Cue loads of tweets of people complaining about remakes and not needing another film and the cast etc. All for a play they had no chance of seeing anyway. A similar thing happened again with a Broadway version with Camila starring in it... people still think that's a film too.
Top quality review.

I saw this two weeks ago with a theatre group from Oregon (we saw eight plays in six days), and we all loved this. It is truly a "well-made play." When you know that sisters gather around a dying parent, you should be ready for trauma and secrets. I'm with Judi Densch--no trigger warnings! The story is not new, and the secrets are not new, but they are brutal, and you have a playwright, director, and cast all working at the very top of their game. The juvenile actresses are particularly good. The script isn't perfect--what are those teenagers doing on stage in the 1970s sections?--and maybe it's a few minutes too long, but our group was surprised when the interval came because we all were so engaged in the story. Yes, it has that Mama Rose tinge along with notes from August: Osage County, but when a story is well told by a fantastic cast you should always expect a great night at the theatre.
8 plays in 6 days? That sounds incredible! What else did you see? ☺I'm so glad to hear that you've enjoyed this show! It is pretty impressive and a good (albeit long) watch!
@@KristinaEmilyOfficial I miscounted--I saw nine in total, some by myself, most with the group. Opening Night (Sheridan Smith was a revelation--I didn't know who she was--but the play was a mess) Guys and Dolls (outstanding), Hadestown (almost outstanding), London Tide (major disappointment because I'm a Dickens scholar), The Mousetrap (for the third time, because it's a great example of that kind of play), The Divine Mrs. Siddons (okay), Standing at the Sky's Edge (it didn't work for me, but most of my group loved it), Player Kings (Ian McKellen was fantastic and Joheeb Jimoh held his own with Sir Ian), and Nye (a riveting play about the founding of the National Health Service--yes, it was). This was my fifth trip with a group from Portland. Nothing this trip, however, compared with The Ferryman, which was probably the best play I have seen in ten years--pre-COVID I was seeing about 50 a year.
@@cwilson284 that’s absolutely incredible! You’ve seen some fantastic shows and some that are less so - Opening night has been widely considered a flop! Ahh The Ferryman was one for a kind, such powerful storytelling! Hope you come to London again to enjoy the West End! ☺️

This is hands down my favourite musical of the last few years! The GL is the perfect home for it...honestly, is there a better theatre in the West End?! You've inspired me to watch it again :D
It's soooo good, isn't it! 😍 glad to hear you feel inspired to see it again, it's totally worth it! Hope you get to see it again before it closes. 😊
I like the Gillian Lynne theatre …. No bad seats ….saw Crazy for You last year from Stalls and Circle but this production feels better suited to wide stage and partially side on seats (also reminds me of Barbican theatre). Ps enjoying more 2nd time round is on interest….saw Hamilton on tour in January and needed the show to understand rough storyline. Since listened to the soundtrack and can’t wait to see it again having been slightly underwhelmed ….Its Quiet Uptown is now one of my favourite musical numbers
I see what you mean given the choreography and scale of the set but I didn’t have an issue with it. It almost felt like an extension of the theatre as it’s a newer theatre so I really liked it. I’m also planning to see Hamilton again and Quiet Uptown is one of my favourite songs ever, can’t go through it without crying 🥹

Glad to see the show has transferred so well. I was a bit worried about that amazing set and how it would fit in the GL.
Honestly, I was super impressed as you can tell from the video! Looked and sounded great in my opinion. 🙂
This has to be one of the worst reviews of a West End show i've ever seen. Hamilton ?? All roles reversed ?? Based on the film ??
Sorry to hear you haven’t enjoyed my review. Don’t think your interpretation of what I said is quite correct - I said that the movie was another dramatisation of the same historical event and that the most roles in the musical were gender reversed/neutral - as in women were playing men and vice versa. And then Hamilton reference was just my personal observation…I think it’s quite apparent that I’ve enjoyed this musical very much and I included it in multiple best to see round-ups so sorry if that didn’t come across when you watched it. Either way, we are all allowed to have our personal opinions and preferences. 😊
It can't have been that good as now been cancelled...
Fortunately for everyone who planned to see it later in the year…
I am afraid I disagree. I did not like this show at all (my hopes were very high). I did not like the choreographies, the customes, the acting, the singing.... Basically the only thing i liked was the orchestra and the amazing service. For me personally, this is one of the worst shows I've ever seen and absolutely not worth the money.
Great review! There are no clips of this show on UA-cam. That scares me. Kinda reminds me of when Beanie was in Funny Girl and they removed all videos of her because of the audience dissatisfaction. I'll hold off on tickets until it's reviewed in NYC!! If comments are to be believed it should be good but since all seats should be good as long as you can see the screen I can wait to buy.
Glad I could help! I think it's definitely worth seeing but as you say - due to a lot of camera work involved, you will be able to see ok even if further away as long as you don't have major obstructions in front of you. Let me know if you go and see it what you think of it! ☺
You clearly haven't watched the movie😅
I haven’t…should I!? 😂 is it worse than the musical?
Great video…. Even if confirmed not my type of show. Also advice of steepness of top tier (not my strength!) and advice on targeting better seats. Ps well done on 1k subscribers! PSs “only a suggestion” if the title had an indication of what you thought of the show rather than a question might provide encouragement to watch (maybe not what should happen but just reality)
Thank you for watching and commenting, Richard!☺glad to hear I'm not the only one who has reservations about this kind of play. And thanks for noticing! I'm still buzzing about it - it's a big milestone! Also, have taken your suggestion onboard and have amended - let's see if it helps! 😊
I saw this on opening night. I didn't really see much direction, it felt like the actors (Cox, mostly) did it how they wanted and it felt quite self indulgent. If they had been challenged more it might have been more interesting but it seemed like a tasteful rendering of the play without much excitement. I thought Clarkson stole the show.
Really well said and totally agree - thank you for sharing your thoughts! The play in its essence is pretty monotonous, emphasising mundane aspects of life and challenges of family relationships so I think it definitely needed something more interesting to elevate the pace and characters. She was great, I've just found this kind of character quite repetitive and similar to some other ones I've seen so couldn't really resonate with it much.
One thing you mention is that it was inspired by the TV dramatisation. Actually it wasn't. This was written way before the TV show happened. In fact I went to see Felix Hagan play live in around 2017 or 2018 (he's the guy that wrote all the music for the show and the only member of Split Lip that you don't see on stage). Anyway, at that gig a few of the actors went on stage with Felix and they performed Born To Lead.
Thanks for sharing this extra context - that's good to know! It's a truly fascinating story so no doubt a few different creatives were interested in it!
Good grief, what a world in which you have to put trigger warnings in case of *tense* emotional content
It's more from the perspective of what to expect as when I went to see the play I couldn't find much about it since it's so new, and honestly I didn't know it will be that heavy.
We saw Opening Night yesterday and felt desperately sorry for the amazing Sheridan Smith and highly talented cast members as it was the most dreadful play we have ever seen. We also considered leaving during the interval as it was so awful. We somehow forced ourselves to stay, with the hope that things may improve in the second half (sadly it didn't). The cast are not to blame as unfortunately, you can't polish a turd. On a positive note, the Gielgud Theatre itself and staff are wonderful.
Ah I love that you managed to find some positives, even if it's simply the venue cause I do agree with you - it's a gorgeous theatre! As for the musical...I do agree with you. Such a shame!
I walked at intermission, and am pretty sure I wasn’t the only one.
😬😬 I don’t blame you. It was hard to get into it.
Good idea to recommend Disney
Thank you! Glad you agree ☺️ feel like that’s something it could be easy to follow for everyone as it’s so well known!
Great idea…. Great suggestions (albeit I’ve only seen 2 of them !). Having seen Les Miz and Phantom multiple times I’d of thought Phantom might be better ….as much spectacle (if not more) and the storyline is simpler. 2 other suggestions (I) opera or dance (many years ago saw an opera at Bastille in Paris with French subtitles which helped) (2) other suggestion would be to watch movie (or film of show) beforehand with subtitles of your first language to better understand story (Hamilton would have been a lot easier if I had better understood basic storyline and characters having now watched on Netflix)
I’m so glad you liked it! 😊 I agree that Phantom is definitely a bit more glamorous but went for Les Miz cause the movie was pretty popular when it came out so thought more people might have seen it. Totally agree tho, a great show to see! 👌🏻 and great suggestions! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and commenting. ☺️☺️

I saw this tonight. It's a bit of a mess, really. You're led to believe it's going to develop into something interesting, with Death as a kind of Greek chorus, but the writer clearly didn't know what to do with any of it, and references to Covid and January 6 felt thrown in to give it a bit of spurious contemporary relevance. It really needed an interval too, two hours straight was too much.
I would agree with you - this wasn’t my favourite play…it kind of didn’t leave me with a strong impression. But also, I didn’t hate it either. It had some interesting parts. I guess Death was a looming presence as that was something everyone felt during the pandemic so maybe that’s the reason why all characters developed some sort of relationship with it as a consequence. But yes, I wish this had something more to give.
I think by choosing a day it was a bit unrealistic. For example, when I saw moulin rouge I paid £29 full price, cabaret I paid £40 but other nights had them for £30
Those are some pretty good prices, thanks for sharing. I personally struggled to book Cabaret for under £60 and Moulin Rouge for under £50 when I went to see it last year and the year before that. I think it’s definitely possible to get cheaper tickets overall but this is more of a guidance and comparison with Broadway. I haven’t included rush or lottery tickets which are cheaper as you can’t really buy those unless you get lucky. Probably the most fair comparison would be to take the averages throughout the year but that can also fluctuate. 😊
Great review 😊 I saw it tonight and really enjoyed. I got on the day rush tickets and was on the second row. I thought the acting was great I did feel the ending was a little rushed and could have been better. The smoking gave me a headache though 😭
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it ☺️ oh no! Someone else in the comments said that too - I haven’t had that issue as I was further away in the grand circle, I think. They gotta sort that smoke out.
I was in Row D last night - genuinely nauseous by the end of Act 3, between the heat and the herbal cigarette smoke - I was worried I was just being dramatic!
@@seanoneill2541 nope you weren't being dramatic at all. It was a lot‼️
It's really good. You're just desperate for people to enjoy your negativity. Pretty sad really. The songs are great by the way.
Hey Martin! Glad you enjoyed the show. It’s a bit unfair to say I was negative, in fact I started with positives so…if you watched the video till the end you’d probably see that I said I’m sad I didn’t enjoy this show. We are all allowed to have our opinions. 😊
She’s hardly the only one who disliked it. You might be the only true believer. It’s widely considered a major flop.
Hamlet "revival'?!?!?
