Subnautica plays so well with thalasophobia, wich sub zero doesn't do the same cuz its history happens on the surface and farming is on caves, in Subnautica u are pretty much in open places, like u said, the back of the aurora was terrifying but dude, going down on south passing the kilometer of deep qnd still cant reach the bottom is also terrifying because u know whats hiding in that darkness and happen usually to be not just one but two or more leviathans, wich is pretty much a very scary place

I was going too buy below zero, but after a few reviews I've decided against it, I have not enjoyed a gam for years quite like subnautica, the reaper leviathan got me good I won't lie, I killed one and I thought this definitely isn't worth it and how vulnerable you feel outside of the prawn or sea moth it was a master piece

One of my biggest problems was that all the vehicles in the game weren’t necessary to beat it. I beat the whole game with just the sea truck. I built the prawn suit but only ever took it out on test runs because it didn’t have any practical use that I couldn’t get out of the sea truck.

What I didn’t like about below zero was that the leviathans weren’t scary. Like they just seemed like cool big fish instead of deadly monsters. Even in the late game of subnautica I couldn’t face the reaper.

This is a very well y done video, but i'll go a bit against the grain and say that i think while not on the level of original Subnautica, you're treating Below Zero too harshly. The character and dialogue in particular i don't like all too much, they are by far the weakest part of the game and they certainly don't add anything positive, but at the same time, i've found that 90% of the time in my playtrough they also didn't hinder my immersion and enjoyiment. I've spent just about 100 hours in my first playtrough, exploring, building, scanning animals and trying not to walk into a leviathan's path, and i liked all of it. The ice worm in particular i've found an excellent source of terror whenever traversing its vast biome, something unavoidable if you want to progress the story, and while the original leviathans, on the whole surpass the Below Zero ones in terms of design (Reaper and Ghost leviathans especially so), i find the design of Shadow leviathan one of the best across the 2 games, and i loved the murky and labyrinthine crystal caves and the feeling of dread the entire biome evokes. The music i've also no gripes about, i liked it, and while not the same of course, i still think it reaches at least 9/10ths of the original in terms of creating a good ambiance. So overall, while it doesn't reach the the masterpiece level of the original Subnautica, i still think it's a game worth playing. The fact that quite terrible character writing didn't manage to spoil it for me is a testament to that, i thinkb

Honestly I just had this game turned off for me as soon as I realized the cyclops was removed. To this day I have never had a feeling of piloting a massive submarine in a game, as good as subnautica. Obtaining a cyclops is still one of the best moments in subnautica. There is so much more I could say, but I’ll continue on. Now the seatruck. The seatruck took over as both the cyclops and the seamoth and honestly it doesn’t work. The main issue is that the seatruck is only good with 2 trailers, anymore and it becomes too painfully slow. This makes it so unreliable as the cyclops has basically all the seatruck trailers basically already inside of it, and it still moves at a reasonable speed. The seatruck just feels like getting a seamoth, all thrill of the cyclops in demolished. The seatruck is a cool vehicle but it just such a downgrade from the cyclops. Honestly I just wish they added the cyclops to below-zero.

I loved the exploration of Sub Nautica. I loved the based building. My favorite aspect was creative mode. I know it grinds against the spirit of the game, but I loved unlimited building and being able to toggle the survival elements on or off. When I finally left the world, the parting words of our friend stuck with me far more than the company saying I was 3 trillion credits in debt. I never played below zero. The protagonist annoyed me, there eas way too much land, and the unresponsiveness of the NPC's you did meet all made me not eant to play. Much better to watch the spark notes if someone else's gameplay. If there is to be a third game, I would've wanted a return to the firm of the original. And co-op? What the heck? I never play online with other people and that will break immersion like naught else before. So, if that's the direction they go in, it'll be another hard pass from me.

I genuinely will never understand why they doubled down on the "story" rather than making new and better game mechanics. Why not give us a wider variety of base building options? New vehicles? New tools? You know maybe a gun of some kind? I have so much love for the og subnautica i watched lets plays of the early access for years and had my first experience when i finally got a PlayStation 4 and loved it despite how absolutely janky and garbage it is on console even to this day. Hell i was watching early access videos on below zero before they completely changed the story and made it way worse and the main character just blatantly annoying and unbearable. I remember when you started on the planet in your own base as a researcher or something and still i think that would have made a better intro. Especially if they added more building mechanics, give us land bases that we can connect to our ones underwater ITS ICE give us the option to drill through it and have a base thats above and below water. Starting on the planet would be a good way to maybe introduce some of those mechanics the research station gets destroyed or something by the meteors and youre forced into another survival situation. If they insist on having an alien in the characters head how about making that the new pda voice of sorts? They could have given backstory on its species and the planet while also endearing you to it even slightly bc its helping you survive on a hostile alien planet. Genuinely the early access is the only time below zero actually FELT like subnautica, i lost all interest after the story was changed to a point where i didnt even know the game released until i saw a youtuber i liked had like 3 episodes out already. Very disappointing in all honesty, as interested as i am in the aliens I'm far more interested in the life on the planet...why were we not given more leviathens? A core memory of literally everyone whos ever touched or even seen subnautica IS THE LEVIATHAN REAPER why would you not double down on the crazy alien life on the planet? You have these crazy huge leviathans but then... they're just said to be extinct...how boring...why am i supposed to be interested or you know SCARED of the life on this planet if everything that would terrify you is just skeletons you find? I mean its cool don't get me wrong but part of the game is being horrified of the unknown even if you aren't gonna give us some collosal creature (they totally should have thats part of the fear in the game.) at least give us something that can surprise us maybe even have a point in the game where you aren't safe anywhere but say land or your base because something happens that allows say a leviathan to get into areas that you view as safe and attack you? Theres already a mod for the first game that has a gargantuan leviathan jump from the water and eat the Sunbeam, can you imagine how terrified youd be to get back in the water after witnessing something like that? Like I'm sorry subnautica is a survival HORROR game it never should have shifted from that, especially if they were just gonna tell a boring safe story rather than even having the balls to do something unique. I mean look at 7 days to die, both the forests, minecraft, no mans sky all games that have extensive survival mechanics whereas subnautica just has some basics and thats about it. They caught lightning in a bottle and immediately chucked it in the trash by not adding anything new. Remember when you could actually add and remove pieces of the world in early access of og subnautica? Where is that in below zero? Like again there's ice everywhere and they couldn't even give us the option to destroy just that for like a cool base or something? Sons of the forest went way harder on story but you know what THEY ALSO GAVE US NEW GAME MECHANICS i cant even name one new mechanic other than the sea truck in below zero and it's literally just a mini cyclops but way dumber and way less cool. (They also removed the cyclops so yeah....) Theres not really a story to 7 days but shere amount of things you can do in that game is insane. I can set up my own power grid of traps and lights and make really cool base i can't do any of that in either subnautica but at least the og has the excuse of being the first and having been made prior to a lot of these better survival experiences. What really stinks is that I'm a huge ocean guy i love the ocean and its rare a game revolving around water can genuinely induce terror into me bc i understand that im safe in the ocean. You don't feel safe in subnautica, at least not for a long while and thats why below zero feels so garbage. Theres nothing that induces that terror response i don't even remember the new leviathans names bc they're just boring and uninteresting and if i remember correctly they're barely even around. Ones just an oversized shark with a weird mouth and the other although visually more appealing its literally just the ghost leviathan from the og with a few minor design tweeks and an animation for when it grabs you to remind you of the reaper. This is like when 343 took over halo, it was just a shallow interpretation that had the paint of the og game and none of the charm. In short they 1. Ruined what interesting concepts they did have by either explaining things that shouldnt have been explained or just executing things poorly. (The story pretty much.) 2. They added basically nothing new and polished nothing. No new mechanics, no new buildings, no new tools, and very cookie cutter new creatures with the same terrible ai and no different behaviors or abilities at all to spice up how you deal with them bc actually doing work is hard. 3. The environment is just...meh i get that its a frozen wasteland but we couldn't have gotten more areas like the crystal cave area? Its an alien planet with very bizarre life they could have done literally anything, they had a creature that spit fire in the first game yet couldn't create an "oasis" of sorts to make areas that aren't just colorless nothingness? Have someplace underground full of life at the very least but no, this is modern gaming creativity isnt allowed anymore. 4. The base building is no different than the first, other than the aesthetic appeal i have zero reason to make a base for myself and im not really given cool places to build either. At the end of the day its just a major grind for materials to then have to go anywhere else for things you actually need, at least the og game gave good options for bases in diverse interesting biomes with reasons to build there. Below zero expands on none of that, you don't NEED a base for anything really except maybe a moonpool and even that im pretty sure you can just place and power individually. 5. Severe lack of survival mechanics, if I'm not mistaken temperature means nothing, its the same food and water system as the first, i can't really effectively grow things i actually need, you don't have to sleep, the cold doesn't effect anything even tho it should, and there's not really any defensive things you can place. All of this is a major factor in number 4 bc bases are useless BECAUSE of the lack of survival mechanics on top of the other reasons i listed. 6. It is painfully obvious the love, dedication and care that went into Subnautica 1 is entirely gone. Below zero doesnt even feel like bad dlc bc it doesnt even feel like subnautica, i wouldn't be surprised to learn that it was made by an entirely different team who either didn't care or didn't know how to make a game like this. I could probably keep going but this is already an essay, all ive gotta say is that people making MODS for the first game are making full game quality EXPANSIONS with a far better grasp on what makes subnautica, subnautica than the actual devs it seems. Call of the void looks insane and i thought it was actually another sequel it looked that good, but nah its just a mod while the actual devs are busy copy pasting everything like a cod developer. Heartbreaking to see subautica ruined like this but oh well things will change eventually when these companies go bankrupt and we'll start getting banger games again when suits realize creativity means more than throwing 200 million at a random fps game.

I obviously didn’t read the whole book but I can tell you why they doubled down on story rather than new game mechanics, it’s because it was meant to be a dlc to the original and no story for a dlc would’ve felt too empty and they couldn’t stuff that many new mechanics into it without annihilating the unity game engine and the no guns is because they didn’t want guns to ruin the survival aspect of either game and also the massacre on obraxis prime. Luckily the 3rd game is being made in unreal engine 5!! LETS GOOOO!!!

@@DarthJarJar_542 yeah I'm...not excited at all tbh I have lost all faith in these developers after this garbage. The gun thing was a very small part of my overall point but they chose to make it that way it's not like they couldn't give us a weapon of some kind but they're too lazy to actually add new interesting or terrifying creatures that you'd need to use them on. I don't care one way or the other about not having guns it's the fact they added NOTHING NEW except a crappier version of the seamoth that also took over as the cyclops. There isn't really a defense for this it's lazy development through and through and a new engine isn't gonna fix that. I listed above what made subnautica fun and you know subnautica so I won't again but I will repeat that this "sequel" feels absolutely nothing like the first game did. Only good thing we got from it was the bigger base module and that was the only new base thing they added AND ITS IN THE FIRST GAME NOW so they don't even get full credit for that especially since I think it was also a mod prior to them doing that. People would have loved this game, myself included, if they'd just added more creatures but they didn't and what ones they did add were lazy and uninteresting and functioned the exact same as the leviathans from the first game but as noted in the video placed in very inconvenient spots compared to the smart placement in the first title.

you hit the problems with below zero with precise accuracy and i rlly hope the devs implement majority of the primary factors that made the first game so mind breakingly fun and exciting, below zero is a good game i wont say it isnt because it does fit hand in hand with the primary story and elements of the origional its just that again like referenced here in this video, its not randomised enough, the creatures specifically have patterns to them which basically state wether you will run into them or not and its always guaranteed unlike the origional, plus the biomes from the origional really fit into what the creatures needed to have a truly good feel to them but in below zero we barely see that or maybe we dont even see that at all depending on who and how you look at the games overall feel and effects on the player. Subnautica itself for me personally is one of my favorite games, and being someone who absolutely despises water based content both in normal media and games that is pretty rare to see at least for me, upon the release of subnautica 2 which is what the next game has been officially labeled as of writing this comment i hope they accurately manage to implement the same sort of feel as the origional game while also still have the unique ness of a new game being added to the series, Having birds in the next subnautica game would be mildy interesting to see as im curious to know what sorts of feel they would give them as well as how they would effect the main gameplay factor, a few questions come to mind when thinking on this subject such as, What will they do that will create a unique feel to the environment they are in? What kinds of things will we see from them and how will they interact with the player? And if both of these things come off very well will we be attacked by a bird species that could be considered leviathan or semi leviathan class? Personally i dont think a leviathan bird would make too much sense due to the game being mostly water based however itd still be interesting to see the type of approach they go off of when coming up with new ideas for the next game in the series. Below Zero for me wasnt very fun personally as it was a good game as prevously stated but lacked the scary feeling the origional was so good at showing if they had put more effort on everything all at once rather then just pushing certain things to the side lines and being done with it, the game probably would have had a better feel to it, as for how the devs made the game they should have focused less on changing/removing parts of the game but instead focused on making sure the game had a sense of randomness to it but also uniqueness rather then just cave simulator, the cave systems are fun and unique but instead of applying a maze full of leviathans it would have been a much better design choice to have large open areas full of recourses but also dangers like the origional had with the lost river and lava zone with the sea dragon, biomes are one of the top 3 things you would probably want to focus on with a new game to the subnautica series only being out done by creatures at number 1 and soundtrack at number 2 story being probably 4th or 5th on the list. The implementation of NPCs in Below Zero had a nice feel to it though, and this is something i think many people can hopefully agree with, as someone who mostly prefers story based elements to games but also the feel of an open sandbox mostly used for exploration subnautica hits mostly every primary factor i look for in a game I am very passionate about making sure the games I play have good elements to them so hence why the long response to how i feel subnautica will hopefully change in the future, but overall i think subnautica was heading in the right direction but they tried something which didnt do well Lets hope that the next game changes the impact that Below Zero had on the community of subnautica

I still remember my favorite memory from Subnautica. It was the death of my first Cyclops. I remember i was surfaced when i accidentally crossed into the ecological deadzone. I didnt realize how far inhad gone until i was bombarded by all three ghost leviathans. They tore me to shreds, but its still an amazing memory because of "Abandon Ship," my favorite track in the game. Really created that sense of urgency as i accepted my ships fate and ran around retrieving every precious resource i could. Sad day for my cyclops, but an awesome memory that put the game in my top 3 all time games

“They came out in 1996-1997-1998 back to back?!! You mean they didn’t sit for 13 years milking the same game and re-releasing it as more consoles were introduced?!! Wow!” -a person who grew up after 2012 probably.

I would say resident evil almost died because 5 and six were poorly written and sort of campy, they were, as mentioned in the video, horrifying, not terrifying

The idea of an arctic subnautica is so great, just a shame it was so poorly executed. Subnautica 2 is on the horizon, I hope it learnt from the mistakes of BZ

My best story with a reaper, I was coming back from exploring down in the lost river, I was showing my friends the game at my house so I decided to take a more scenic route I personally hadn’t gone yet but I went through all the surrounding areas and figured why not. I’m driving to my beacon in my Seaglide all fine and dandy, not in the crash sight cause it’s too blue but I know I’m near so when I hear the cry I didn’t think too much of it (after all at this point I had handled ghosts so I was somewhat confident in my escape abilities). Then as I come across this sand mound I see him off in the distance he was circling to come for me so I waited then was going to circle around the sand mound and try to keep going as he charged me and force him to turn around again, as he starts charging me and I turn right to get around the mound all I see is a 2nd reaper leviathans face coming straight for me. Both me and my friends jumped hard asf then I died getting jumped by 2 reapers. I didn’t think they were supposed to hunt in the same ground why tf was there 2 of them????

The mountains has many reapers that hunt on the same ground and so does the back of the Aurora

Big fan of the original, the 2023 remake was great. Very familiar but still new enough to make me feel uneasy.

Not every character has to be a self insert...its ok for them to have personality and characterization...as long as it fits the theme (see geralt of rivia) but yeah in subnatica it definitely took you out of it with all the dumb quips and such.

i could never put my finger on why i didn't like below zero and i think this gets pretty close. it was really disappointing given that the first game is easily my top 3 games of all time (right there with outer wilds)

Yeah I feel the same way. I always think I have to put Minecraft at number one myself just based on the number of hours of enjoyment I’ve had, but there are plenty of others that could fight for that top spot for me that I’ve been obsessed with over the years, like Flashback, Streets of Rage 2, Time Crisis, Broken Sword, Worms II, Goldeneye, Quake II, Resident Evil 2, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider III, Half-Life, Deus Ex, Fahrenheit, Second Sight, Resident Evil 4, Max Payne, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect 2, Halo, CoD: Modern Warfare II, Street Fighter 4, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead, Oblivion, Skyrim, The Last of Us, Witcher 3 and probably a bunch more. But for all of those, none of them absorbed me into the world due to the raw enjoyment of simply existing in it, and then rewarded my exploring with a tantalisingly rich story like Subnautica did. Below Zero though? Wouldn’t even breach the Top 20. Outer Wilds was awesome and original and beautiful, although I thought the story that you piece together was severely lacking compared to the concrete and clear finale of Subnautica.

I played Subnautica back in beta 0.2 or something like that in 2018 and went along with the development which is why I have 325 hours in it. I can find myself itching to play it again, but never once have I said, "I wanna play Below Zero again."

I played both... first one was perfect, the second one i kept telling myself "it's gonna get good, it's gonna get good, the first one was good..." and abandoned it before finishing. I don't know why, but it didn't feel right for some reason. The biomes felt smaller or cluttered, i didn't feel like an explorer on an unknown planet anymore. Wasn't the fact i knew the planet already, because replaying the first one felt better than "discovering" below zero

*see's the burn in on your screen from the Subnautica HUD* 200+ hours! Impressive like no other. I had around 80 hours and thought that was impressive. You got a solid sub from me. After playing the 2nd one I've been tempted to do a replay to the OG Subnautica. Such a gem of a game.

Below zero is still an interesting game, compared to the copy+paste crap that’s being pumped by other studios. But yeah, Robin as a character makes no sense. She launches into an asteroid rain, without any prepping or equipment, and leaves the wreck happy and lighthearted. Like?? She also accepts the alien after some seconds of shock and the alien itself starts sounding super human.
