Fully-Handmade YiXing ZiSha crafting! by our Craftsman Yi :-D
Dearest Friends,
You may come across friends who do not understand the reasons for you spending $180-$300 for a Fully-Handmade ZiSha Work. It is not a small sum of money, especially for many of our student patrons here. We deeply cherish our patrons who are still schooling but spend their money here to remunerate our Craftsmen and Artists. Here you can finally pass this un-beautified, non-ASMR-treated: a truthful video of the crafting processes, on to your friends who are starting their tea journey with you, but take your time, one by one, so that he or she would understand you much better.
You will witness the myriad of skills involved in the arduous crafting process of a Fully-Handmade ZiSha pot.
One will remember the fact that, after completing the 3-year course at the YiXing ZiSha school, and even after a FURTHER three years of apprenticeship, a Craftsman may still NOT be able to successfully accomplish a seemingly “basic” Xi Shi or Fang Gu.
Here is, Craftsman Yi dedicating half of her one night’s work, between 10:30pm to 2:30am. Craftsman Yi is a graduate, have previously enjoyed a high paying job as an official translator, as she is proficient in Chinese, English and Russian. However, twelve years ago, on one fateful day she saw how our Aunt Senior Master Cao Lan Fang was working on a pot which Miss Yi had commissioned her to craft. Miss Yi fell in love with the craft and just like a reborn Craftsman, she immediately quit her high paying job, and dedicate herself, lifelong, to the Art of Fully-Handmade ZiSha. She still says, candidly scratching her head, that she did not understand why she just went ahead immediately, but she felt the calling. She loves ZiSha Art crafting, what it means deeply to her.
After eight years of GRUELLING learning and practice, and her immense heart and dedication to the cause of saving Fully-Handmade ZiSha Art and Craft, she has grown to be our “QC” manager since four years ago. Her daily work, which we allowed her to choose, involves the supervisory role for all our fellow Collaborative Craftsmen’s work besides herself crafting pots for our earlier list of friends and patrons. Quality control manager, you may reckon her to be. Ever since four years ago, she has a long list of commissioned works stretching a further five years at any time. Each Austere work which our tea masters in China order from her, is between 5000-6500rmb (takes 2 weeks each to prepare/craft/fire). She has a loyal following, our early list of patrons since six years ago, have stuck to her, having grown familiar to her. She is not employed by us at the Cao Family. We believe that each Craftsman is an Eagle herself/himself. Servant leadership, mutual professional respect, and warm feelings between all of us closely, is the way to go.
You can see her being familiar and fast in her decision making process, and this stems from her years of learning, practice and her ample planning prior to starting the pot crafting.
You will also empathise, as crafting is extremely taxing to the neck, back & eye muscles.
Other hardships,
During summer, she can’t switch on AC, during winter she can’t turn on heater.
Switching on the AC, would have dried the craftworks easily, and the pots will hence easily crack.
Switching on the heater in the winter, will also dry up the ambient air, and the craftworks will also easily crack.
Switching on humidifiers do not save the situation and hence Craftsmen will never switch on their AC nor Heaters during work.
This video was made in quite warm weather at 30degrees Celsius, and you see Craftsman Yi wearing light.
~
We are very fortunate to be drinking tea.
We have not seen in this video, how tough it was for the miners who have ventured into the mines/quarry under stifling conditions within a small tunnel, to explore, inspect and take off ores from the walls of the tunnel. Sometimes, the walls collapse, and some workers unavoidably, die in the process. Many died during the illegal and unsupervised mining years before, as they are trapped inside as the walls collapse.
The ores have to be carried out, then weathered down over months. The ores have to be picked.
Sometimes, the firing kiln may not be too kind to the pots. All eighteen pots after six weeks of work, may all be cracked when taken out of the kiln. Are Craftsmen used to this type of disappointment and heart breaks? Sadly for us to say: yes they are used to it. They view failures, cracks and deformations as unavoidable and totally part and parcel of this profession and commitment.
~
A Fully-handmade YiXing ZiSha Work is the best companion for steeping tea.
Our forefathers have gone through 500 years of perfecting Fully-Handmade ZiSha process.
We cannot let it perish in our generation. Our craftsmen are persisting; ignoring the cries of hiring from the jigger-machining factories and the confirmed promise of stable income and easier work.
We continue to work hard to preserve this tea culture.

I am an antique collector. I have many pieces from the Ming, Qing and very early Republic of China pieces from very reputable auction houses. What I found was that the higher the level of the work and more effort the artist put into it, I couldn't find the trait you mentioned. The works were finished precisely inside and out to near perfection, and there was not a single fault, line, or mark to be found. But to anyone who looks at it, it is a real handicraft. Ming Dynasty zisha works are known for their lower level of completion due to the absence of tools and irregularities in technique. But despite what is known, the level of finishing surpasses that of modern works. Perfect curves and seamless freedom, a sense of tenacity and patience. As you said in other comments, I know that what you mentioned in the video is not a perfect standard. But the feeling that most of my collection was fakes according by video, it shock me more than I thought. I know it's authentic because I was double-verification by a Chinese appraiser and an auctioneer, but I was sweating for a moment. 😅

🌿🍵🎋 Dear Sir/Madam, I feel heartened that you appreciate the efforts behind the scenes. I sincerely also wish to emphasise also, that all the absence or presence of each indicator/parameter/signs, is not entire proof of whether a pot is authentic Fully-Handmade vs the ubiquitous jigger-machined pot. 🌻🌻🌻 As written on our website realzisha.com, I also mentioned (which you can scroll and read on our first page), that, Xing Ti 形体 is usually the giveaway. With experienced people, one does not even need to hold and feel the pot, and not even need to open the lid and look within the lid. We can see just by looking at a pot 1 meter away: we can tell by observing the coherency, curves, form, proportions. Yes: just by observing. In fact, in YiXing shops where many, many shops sell counterfeits and non-zisha pots, these counterfeits shop owners will secretly laugh within, if a walk-in customer comes into the shop -> approach a pot->and then touch and lift up the pot and open the lid to inspect within: this sign is the sure sign for the shop owner that he can go up to this walk-in customer and dupe him by various stories into believing that the pot is an "authentic Fully-Handmade ZiSha pot". A Fully-Handmade ZiSha pot has the 形体 Xing Tin, form, shape, that will be the clue as to whether a ZiSha Work is truly Fully-Handmade or not. 🌿🌿🍵🍵🍵🍵 Most of the so-called "Fully-Handmade" indicators can be faked on. This fake industry is huge. There are multiple factories and operations making such fake pots which are jigger-machined and not made from ZiSha at all. There are streets and streets, and buildings and buildings of shops selling such counterfeits. I will also come up with a video soon when we went undercover to unravel such fake operations. The video was done at great danger. 🎋🎋🎋 We only wish to preserve this precious Fully-Handmade ZiSha Art. Gratefully yours, ~ ian🌞

Be extremely careful when considering any of these pots. I have been to the shops in Ding He and can tell you MOST of the pots for sale are fakes. The Chinese have classes in how to make fake pots for the tourist industry. The fake shops are right next door to the shops where actual masters produce works of art. This guy is worried that someone will sell a fake pot for a real price. Remember that China actually had an Apple store that Apple knew nothing about. They had a fake bank that took all the deposits and left town. Just buy a pot that you like and assume that it is fake. If you can afford to spend $1000 on a fake pot, then go ahead. Be happy. I've been collecting and making pottery since 1970. I've studied in Japan and China for 11 years. Be careful, be very very careful. I have more fake stories than I care to tell. As the Chinese say, "Xiao shin di ar!" That's Mandarin for "be careful."

What's the main difference between a handmade pot and a factory made one at this level? Will it severely affect the taste? I have a cheap factory made 60ml teapot and it leaks around the lid. That's my main issue with it. Other than that I think it's quite fine for what it's meant for. I want to own a hand made tea pot, I really do, but they are seriously expensive.

I think you answered your own question. As per my understanding counterfeits come in 2 varieties- decently functional genuine yixing clay pots that work fine for the tea brewing but which are marked up and sold as more expensive handmade art pieces by masters thus causing economic loss to the buyer, and outright fakes make with non-yixing clay or worse, paint-mixed clays which can be downright harmful to the users. So if a factory-made pot is sold at fair prices, then you get value for money. Similarly if a pot is sold as an art piece "in the style of yixing pot" but with clear warning not to drink from it, fine. It's when those ethical lines are crossed that there is a problem

If you plan on drinking tea for a long time its wont be expensive in the end

Save some spare change and you’ll get one in months time, in the meanwhile research on good sources and info (I like essence of tea and realzisha). Get a cheap porcelain or chaozhou 60ml pot (not a good idea to drink from a random factory 60ml pot) for your needs.

Don't worry, this proper ecosphere is not exclusive, and it doesn't mean one must spend above $1000 to be in.
