    Conventional chargers will initiate a "bulk" charge of 14.2-14.6 volts until a lithium battery gets to 70-80% and drop to an "absorption charge" of 13.2-13.6 volts. Lithium batteries require a constant charge of 14.2-14.6 volts right up to 100% before they go to a Float charge. This why a conventional charger will never fully charge a lithium battery.

    • @jackmclane1826
      @jackmclane1826 2 місяці тому

      Wha? Lithium chargers charge with constant current up until a certain voltage threshold, depending on exact cell chemistry. If you pump 14,2V on a drained lithium battery, you would fry it (and probably the charger too) instantly.

      I’m sure people will criticize me for this but I did used to sell marine batteries when I worked at a marine. There isn’t much difference between marine batteries and regular ones. Marine are built a little tougher as they get abused more and they also don’t vent. Some automotive batteries vent and you don’t want that in an engine hatch. I can’t speak as to how long these batteries will last in rough conditions but I do know they don’t have the plates that can fall apart like lead acids. If I were you I’d use it but just maybe use a battery box like I suggested.

    oh side note, Buddy heaters especially the Big buddy, can run off external propane tanks using hoses. tanks come in a ton of sizes now, though 10, 12, and 20 lb seem the best. you can buy a little flame king 5 pounder for example at Canadian tire. Using the CORRECT adapter hose (some hose have an oil inside that just kills buddy heaters), a little 5 lb container might not seem like anything. why not just stick with the 1 pounders, right? a 1 pounder will run for about 3 hours at max heat 6 hours at min... if its really cold and you are trying to sleep... having to wake up every 3 hours to change tanks, might not be good. but that little 5 pounder will run you all night without changing. so little advantage there. Some of the Diesel heaters can also run on different fuels including a blend of waste oil and diesel. may not be as "clean", but in emergency situations, its good to know how to prepare and run that for your brand. While diesel heaters do need a "battery", battery options are actually far more available, and you may even have the basis for one in your garage. Form Canadian tire (using them since you mentioned them) you can get a - Mastercraft 20V Power Inverter, Tool Only, PWR POD Compatible. This... is an inverter. you plug your master-craft battery into it... then you can charge USB devises or plug power cords into it. so now your power tool battery, is also a back up power supply. which could then, if you have a 120v to 12v adapter for your heater, plug into it. This can give you a "light" option for battery and since the drain is pretty low, since all its running as a glow plug for start, then the pump... you don't need a big battery.

  • @jenniferstewarts4851
    @jenniferstewarts4851 5 місяців тому

    Ok, lets get this straight, both are good, but have different applications. buddy heaters are small, portable, quick to start, can run off internal or external fuel. the big buddy is 4,000-18,000 BTU or 1kw to 5kw. Propane puts out a good amount of moisture into the air, this can cause mold problems in some situations. Diesel heaters need external power, batteries or power to operate. They have thermometers allowing you to set the heat, have them turn on and off as needed. They are noisier and have exhaust and heat pipes. Application wise... Propane heaters are good backup or emergency heaters. They are good working in combination with wood stoves... where you can start the propane heater to warm up the tent till you can start a fire. They are good for small to medium campers again as a backup... but you do have to worry about what the moisture/humidity will do to the wood in the camper especially where it condenses and drips inside. Diesel heaters are good for structures... cabins, sheds, and work well with wood stoves. you can for example have a wood stove going all night, then when fire goes out, and temp starts to drop, the heater will detect that and will start up to keep the building warm. they are better then propane for "long term" constant usage... for running days on end... where propane is great for shot hops where you need heat right away, or space is at a premium. If you don't want to install or don't need to install a heater propane is best... if it doesn't get super cold for days or weeks, or if you are doing things like bike camping, using a small RV or such... a little buddy heater is fine. All that said, there really is no reason in campers, trailers, small cabins, not to use 2 or even 3 heat sources. having a diesel heater for long term heat in extreme cold, especially when you are out of the house and don't want things to freeze. coming home having a wood stove that you can start up, and watch your diesel turn off when he stove heat gets up to temp.... then having a propane back up in emergencies, or if you need quick localized heat for example in a bathroom area.

      I think I need you to film this video for you. You summed it up pretty excellent I think. So the only think my diesel heater does not so is turn itself on and off. It will turn itself from high to low if you set a constant temperature but won’t turn off if it get to hot. It will just run on low until it runs out of diesel. The newer diesel heaters I believe will turn themselves right off if it gets above the temp you set it too and then won’t turn back on until it cools down. (You also pay more for them but I think they’re down to like $160 Canadian ish). I really do prefer the diesel heater. It’s a dry heat. Has more adjustability in the temperature settings and I think is cheaper to run. But it’s just not at portable. So for that reason I do prefer the propane heater for some applications and I do use the propane heater more. Both have their place. Both work but both are just suited better for different cases. I’m not going to bring a heavy battery and take up a bunch of room on my ice fishing sled to go fishing for a day with a diesel heater. I’ll bring the propane one and an extra bottle. But I will deal with moisture all day. If I were out for a few nights I’ve fishing or camping I’d try ti being the diesel if I could just because the adjustability of heat and it’s just a more pleasant heat. I don’t have a camper trailer but if I did I 100% would want the diesel in it so things don’t get moist and potentially moldy. I also think the diesel heater would heat it a lot better too. So yeah for me it’s all depending on the application is what I’ll use it for, and I did buy both heaters for 2 different applications and am happy with both of them.

      @@brettseres8352 Turning on and off... if you set your heater to keep the room at 60F.. and while your fireplace is going the room is at 68-70f the heater won't be going... the temp is above 60 so it won't try and heat up... Once the fire goes out, the temp will start falling and once it hits 55ish, the heater will realize it has to warm the room up and "start". Now as you say, you don't want to take up a lot of space on your ice fishing sled. Picture this. A small "tear drop" trailer, on ski's... with ice fishing holes in side, solar panels on the roof... you tow into place via snowmobile or snowcat, open the holes in the floor of the tear drop and auger 1-2 ice fishing holes. you then put a "sleeve" (bucket with the bottom cut out) though the hole in the tear drop and into the ice hole, this creates an air seal to keep wind from blowing up into the tear drop... and set up your ice fishing rig inside. you can climb in, sit, be warm and off the ice, you have your diesel heater keeping you warm. you have the batteries for when you want to make coffee, or you use a little butane cook top inside to make dinner while fishing. Can stay there, or move as needed without really "setting" things up. Now fuel use, propane will chew through a single 1 lb bottle in about 3 hours... 20 lb bottle will often go for 2-3 days. at max output a little 5kw heater will chew .13 gal per hour. 3 gal per day at constant use max power... but it rarely runs at max power constant, and in most cases even with basic insulation it will chew about 0.058/hr or just over 1gal per day. 5 gal tank will keep you toasty for 4 days in a small cabin, van, or tear drop.

      @@jenniferstewarts4851 so if I set my heater to 60 and I had. A wood stove going. My heater would still run on low. It won’t shut off. Unfortunately I can’t afford that right now. Maybe one day I’ll have a nice toe behind sleep but until then I need to use my small pop up shelter.

If you are expecting to be off grid, even if the weather is supposed to be "fair", have a back up heat source in the winter. Thus if one heater fails due to mechanical problems (buddy wont start because propane is to cold) the ability to switch to an alternate heat source can save your life. being out, and having a bad storm blow in, hunkering down and waiting an extra day or 2 before you can leave... having additional fuel for your primary... and/or a backup to turn to if you run out of fuel for one... is just a no brainer. think of how many people died in texas when they had their cold snap and power outage...

    Did you measure the voltage at the cutoff point?, because in another UA-cam review it was around 7v. That's too low for a cutoff voltage (should be 10v) and will damage the cells in the long run. I believe the manufacturer has set the BMS for a low cutoff voltage to boost the AH rating, and that tells me the cells in this battery are second grade/used cells. That may explain the low price on this 100AH battery.

    Between low and high should be safe. Between pilot and low can be dangerous. Although it can be done, if something were to blow out the weak flame and the pilot light was still going the heater gas may be too low for the pilot to relight the heater. Then the gas would continue to pour out until it pooled up and exploded.

    I found it risky to turn the knob too high and then back to pilot, dangerous as i would have allowed way too much gas to be released to atmosphere; then ignititor fires; BOOM ! Be careful with that Red Knob. Too much gas is bad, too little and gas could be released inro surroundings unburned. Loose gas eventually goes BOOM. Gas settles low and stays there until ignited! BOOM. People die from playing with gas.

    • @brettseres8352
      @brettseres8352 7 місяців тому

      Nope not at all. As long as it’s vented outside you won’t smell it. Where we live the wind usually blows away from the garage door though. I’m sure if there was an oncoming wind you may get a little bit of smell. But I’ve yet to have any issues.

      At the moment, pump diesel is £1.47 per liter, to run a 1kw heater costs me 36p in electricity per hour, the heater will run for about 5 hours off a liter, that's about 29p per hour. It's not much but it is a saving. In UK we can get red diesel meant only for off road use and that's about £1 per liter. Fact is that we are mega jipped off here in UK for fuel. Not sure how it is for USA but as far as I can see it is worth doing but does involve faffing about setting it up, it's noisy etc. so when you say not worth it, that depends on your situation and to just state ' not worth it ''could really do with some explanation.

    • @brettseres8352
      @brettseres8352 7 місяців тому

      The cost is irrelevant to me for the heater. I have it for a reason. It’s a portable heater for me that can be used for different things than my buddy heater. The cost per hour to stay warm in certain circumstances is irrelevant. But I do want to know how long I can run it before I need more fuel.
