Thanks for this. I completely agree with your assessment of the watch purchasing experience at the flagship store in Kyoto. I purchased the Old Smith larger (38mm) in bronze, ref. 90-002L, green dial. I believe the calibre is the Seiko NH38. Love the vintage British field watch esthetic. Excellent purchase experience and value. I was out the door, including a butterfly strap closure for $429.00 USD. I love what these guys are doing!

I got the exact same watch in mint condition (5606-7310). I also used to have a blue one, but I sold it. The nylon date corrector wheel is the week point, I replaced it with a metal aftermarket one and it has been working great since then. By the way, I notice the lines on the facet glass are rounded off and don't line up 100%. It indicates it has been polished. Not a big deal, the rest - dial, case and bracelet - still look amazing! ⌚️👌

China is a blurry line between genuine and fake in all aspects. First-off, Chinese have no ethical distinctions between them when it comes to their business acumen (spoken from experience, not from uninformed judgment). Within Chinese production, things are very washy, with most small villages having a scattering of small workshops, all producing the same small components on radically outdated machinery, which all get filtered back into the larger scale factories. This makes actually identifying the origin of any component in a product impossible. This is simply the on-the-ground reality. As such, there is likely little to any major quality differences between what you find inside a genuine model, Vs the fake. Moving on to the Shanghai watch, I have a more modern (10 year old) 17 jewel model from them (genuine) . The strap is not significantly better on it than on your Alibaba model. The rest is more in line with your grandfather's model. It is not an impressive piece except for its lineage. In China, Shanghai watches are coveted just for their lineage, and a genuine model can be quite pricy. A trip to on the on-street store in Shanghai is interesting if you are ever here.

This attention to detail is only available on much higher cost Swiss brands ( The bevelling on the dial indices & hands are incredible.. & the polishing is mirror like). These look comparable to the finishing on the typical Grand Seiko. A true competitor to that competing Japanese brand.

The new ones are made with a mix of old and new from Shanghai, movement is rough like an 80s watch but most are NOS made in the 2010s Chinese watches the first was seagull in 1955 (maybe pocket watches converted made before) but in the 60s or 70s the government mandated the tongji (standard) watch movement as in a 17j 3hz handwinding movement based on a swiss Enicar so that repair was easy no matter the brand, some movements where expempt and autos did exist. If you look at the watches from the 60s to early 80s they are very well made and the movements are hand decorated some brands better than others but you did have a waiting time. Shanghai and Seagull are the most well known but better brands existed. At the moment I would put Hangzhou watch factory at the very top then Seagull at the bottom is peacock and modern. The military never issuied watches but did prefer certain brands and types. In old china as a man if you had a watch and flying pidgion or 5 rams bike (copy's of 1930s British bikes) and a radio you had it all. For ladies they made ladies bikes, watches but what was essential was a seeing machine very similar to a singer and well made. That a bed, a table and 4 chairs in an apartment in a teir 1 city like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou .ect with a household book for the city and a job working for the state you would be considered upper middle class. Everything was made to last and be repaired quickly. If lucky maybe you could get a 2 stroke engine for your bike or maybe a copy of a honda 50 -150cc cub / Jane or if you had connections maybe even a Chang Jiang motorbike with sidecar. If a farmer very lucky to have a tractor and only those at the top had cars mostly. If it was not for the fact china hated the idea of importing quartz movements / crystals from Japan for reasons and the fake market then maybe all mechanical production would shut down in China. Seagull the world's biggest mechanical movement maker went quartz for a couple of years then moved back. What alot of people don't know is that TMI movements as in Seiko NH35 .ect are made in Malaysia and China. Hangzhou produces some very nice micro rotor 4hz and ETA clones (hkpt needed them) If it's under 3500 most parts will be made in China apart from the lume and movement. If Japanese it will be cased in China unless it's high end, the search group has huge plants in China and swiss movement manufacturers like STP are using seagull movements. Switzerland uses alot of Chinese based movement parts including ETA and Stellita also watchmakers usualy buy Chinese spares. China could make movements just as good as swiss if people are willing to pay. Some good seagull watches that are new cost over half a million dollars.... China makes something like 95% or more of watch parts, made in Japan law is a joke and a swiss movement only has to be 60% swiss by value.... For the price of 30 dollars I think it's a great reissue. In China it's getting harder to find nice old watches and the price of servicing is going up. The nation that does alot of servicing of old watches is now Vietnam. When I was in Dandong I did buy some NK marked but not made autos for 15 dollar ls each and NK made quartz for about 5 that and some propaganda stuff and NK money it was a good deal but the NK made in China handwind / autos all made by peacock......

If anyone is interested, the paper dials aren’t actually dyed. There’s a tinted plastic disc that covers the dial. That kind of surprised me when I found out. These watches are incredible. One of these will be my next grail. The line up on everything is incredible, especially the second hand. I’ve got an eco-drive that’s over 23 years old now and still going strong with no services. I wore that watch hard. This is a very exciting watch for me. Great review thanks!

The moonphase complication is no principally different than any other watch just very small in size. You just have to know that dial moves clockwise to figure out is the moomphase growing or diminishing. What they messed up with the black version is the moon age indicator scale. For reasons unknown they decided to flip the mask covering the Moon icon 90 degrees but forgot to turn the age numerical scale the same way. The result is that on black version dial says that moon is 0 days old when it is full moon🤦‍♂️ Really embarassing for Swatch , in my opinion

A year ago my dad gave me his late friend's 1969 Seiko 5 which made me remember how much I appreciate classic, understated, sleek Japanese watch designs. A couple months ago I decided to get a passport and burn some airline miles and as a joke I said "maybe I'll fly to Japan and get a couple Seikos." As luck would have it I saw a Kuoe ad a day or so later. Makes it easy to plan an itinerary... but man this is turning into an expensive joke about flying for free around the world to buy a watch 😂

This is actually the way they used to come packaged years ago, then they went to the hard shell Green boxes , around the early 90's, Nice watch but, really would not give more than about $3500.00 for a vintage watch, because it's only stainless steel, that is really about all it would sell for.

This watch was fixed in China, so there's definitely risk there in terms of fake parts. I took this risk because my local watchmaker was charging $250 for a service which I thought was too much (China charged about $40).
