Let's paint on Japanese Art Supplies: Shikishi Board
Today I am painting on Japanese art supplies - specifically shikishi board. It is spelled 色紙・しきし in Kanji and hiragana respectively. I think this art paper is super ideal for making words that you want to sell. This Japanese art paper doesn't bend or deform after using paint which I really love. It also comes with many colors and details.
I will be painting on the Japanese paper board using 1. arrtx acrylic markers 2. holbien acryla gouache paint 3. windsor newton ink!
Also you can find my art here!

    I really like the 4 seasons work in progress that you showed us at the end. I like the animal companions you chose for the women, too. I look forward to the community post that shows the work completed. I love all the bugs you’ve been painting on the shikishi boards. Birds, lizards, frogs, salamanders are some other animals you could paint on them if you wanted to. I love the flowers too! Ink lines look beautiful on those boards. As for pricing, I think maybe you could price them based on the size of the painting. The smaller ones could be $20 and the bigger ones $45 to $50. Those are USA dollars. I don’t know what that would be in Japan. What country do you come from, Hannah? What is the currency there?

    • @HannahMorenDraws

      Those are great subjects for paintings, I was thinking of branching out to other animals but was like, "oh man should I just do cats? Seems unrelated..." But I love reptiles and amphibians so that's another cool way to go that feels more unique and related to insects. I'm glad you like the ink! I can finish those way more quickly but it is more hit or miss if they come out well since I think they come out better without too much planning, but sometimes that means I mess up! Also thank you for your thoughts on pricing - I really appreciate it. I am also from the US and I was thinking around 1,000 yen (like $7.00) for the small ones and like 3,000 yen (like $25.00) for the big ones, but I just don't know if that's too cheap or too expensive. So getting some idea from someone who isn't my family or bf really helps!!!! Thanks so much for watching and your thoughtful comments :)

      @@HannahMorenDrawsAren’t cats really popular in Japan? So many people love cats, so I bet people will want to buy paintings of them at the art market. I personally wouldn’t go lower than $7 for the tiny paintings. They are one of a kind pieces of art that are skillfully made.

      Cats are popular - but maybe that is oversaturated! I see so many great cat illustrations! Thanks for the advice on the price, I really really appreciate it, it's really hard for me to gauge a good number at all.

    Thank you so much for sharing your process! I really struggle with acrylic paint, so watching you made me want to not give up on that medium. I really loved the beatle, these markers are so cool!! I am in love with your bags drawing collection! They will look so good exhibited on a wall! I used to collect bugs (not in a professional way tho) so I can totally appreciate their beauty haha but never thought on drawing them. Your seasons theme drawings are so on point, tou captured the feeling of each season so well. Looking forward to see the winter one done. About the shikishi with the flowers ink draw, it is beautiful! Maybe connect the golden ovals of the background to the flowers with some gold ink? Like... Maybe some leaves in gold or some sparkle(?) Good to see another vid from you❤ and your cutie cat at the end, can't get enough of him!!

      Thanks for watching and commenting on my videos! I would like to make more often but things have gotten really stressful with just figuring out living in a foreign country! You'd think I'd have figured it out by now, but I am still running into difficulties... My boyfriend studies insects so I've had to seen a lot over the years.. some still living and some less cute. But I do still think that (some) are beautiful! I use acryla gouache which is a bit different than acrylic paint - but honestly behaves the same way! Just acryla gouache is more opaque and matte than acrylic paint I'd say. I've been thinking of using gold paint on the shikishi board for backgrounds on some of the more plain boards.. I haven't figured out how I am going to work that out! I will try to post more religiously biweekly until things hopefully ease up! I am also thinking of incorporating live streams and posting those recordings - no editing so faster! Take care and thanks for appreciating my cat :)

      @HannahMorenDraws @HannahMorenDraws always prioritize yourself! Living alone is not easy, even if you where to live 5 min from your family. Let alone in foreign country that is far away from everyone you know and love. I can't imagine the pressure that is on you as also a student who needs to keep up with alignments. I will always root for you and wish you success and fulfilment!! Omg you bf is collecting also living bugs? For some reason I can touch and able to deal with them only when they are dead. I can't even look at some of them when they are alive! He is brave! Or maybe that is a matter of some cultural fears that ingraved into us? Because I remember myself as a kid, collection live worms haha I can't imagine myself do that now, I will be grossed out. 😂 Thank you for the tips on acrilic gouache!💕 I will try my best (I have a set of Turner, and recently bought a sty wet palette, hope it will help). Live streams are an amazing idea!!! Yess!! Looking forward to it! Stay creative and happy and wish you an amazing week🙏🏻💋

      Yes he collects living ones and then they'll just be lying around our apartment in tubes! It was quite unsettling to me when we lived together in Seoul, I made him put them away. A lot of Korean people are INSANELY scared of bugs, at least people in Seoul, so if anything my bf is more unusual!!! I also used to collect insects as a child, but now, no thankssss...... I also use turner acryla gouache usually for class! That's what they required us to buy for school, I had the holbein gouache from before and use it for my own stuff or if I run out of the turner. I think I should get a wet palette too, it would waste less too. Thanks for always kindly watching and commenting! It means a lot :) Hope you also have a great weekend and week!

    The Autumn drawing is the best; but, they are all very good ideas. They need a little more work and they will be perfect imageries of the seasons. As far as your ink drawing, I think you might have something special there as well. I would suggest free hand practice on scrap paper and then free hand an ink drawing based on your ideas combined. The butterfly drawing is beautiful and I really like the small drawings.

      Interesting I think everyone has different opinions - my teacher likes the crab summer one the best. I think I like the winter one the best (I finished it.) I don't know what you mean by needing more work - only winter isn't finished there. I paint with ink all the time! I think sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't - the more you practice the better you hit it out of the park. I did 100 drawings last year and made a video about it. Thanks for watching~

    Hello, as a recent regular viewer of this channel, I figured that I would let you what my reasons for watching your channel are. I am currently an art student in the United States. I started watching your videos because I am interested in eventually moving to Japan. My favorite videos from this channel have been the comparison of Japanese and American art schools, visiting art shop, discussing your current art projects, and painting in cafes. The next videos I plan on watching are your old artwork and your favorite Japanese art books. I view your channel as a relaxing video I can watch while studying about my continuing education as an artist, living abroad, and starting a professional career as an artist.

      Thank you for your response - it is really hard to know what people like and are looking for - sometimes I think a video flops because no one is interested but it could also just be how I package it! I hope you're enjoying art school in the states and it feels like you're learning! I know art school can be expensive, and I will say when I was in art school it wasn't the best time of my life and I had a hard time making the most of it. I am so happy to have the opportunity now to pursue it again in Japan - it's truly a dream I had since I was about 19. I'll keep trying to make content you like! And I'm glad someone likes my cafe videos, those are honestly why I started the channel in the first place. But I don't see as many adorable cafes in Osaka as in Seoul! South Korea has an insane amount of nice atmosphere cafes :)

    You are going treasure hunting in this video! You are living my dream of shopping for art supplies and studying art in Japan. I guess those shikishi papers are for calligraphy drawn with ink brushes? If you ever get that fan shaped one, you could paint birds and clouds on it. That is what I’d paint on it. Have you ever made your own homemade stab sketchbooks? Yes! Definitely show us some process videos of what you paint on the shikishi papers you got! I am definitely interested to see what you paint on the ones with the gold landscape silhouettes on them, especially the one with the mountains. I love that blue beetle and those lemons you painted on the tiny ones you got!

      It's been my dream since maybe 19 to study in Japan, that's when I started studying the language. I'm 34 now so a bit late in the game, but I can't believe I'm doing it sometimes. I have tried ink with the shikishi board before I knew what it was - but it was like windsor and newton ink and it bled a lot. I wonder if like traditional Japanese ink would be different? I will try fan ones one of these days! And the actual fan! I want to make a video soon, but I can tell I will have to go to a biweekly posting schedule, things have gotten to be too much to manage!

    The griffin I think is the best of the three because the griffin looks full and not flat. The fullness of its body balances out with the background full of flowers. If the leviathan and the unicorn had the same or similar amount of fullness that the griffin had, then I think they’d all look equally as great. I like the style of all three of the creatures, the colors are lovely, and I love the look of the flowers you painted in each one. Let us know how the competition went! Don’t be self conscious that your paintings aren’t as big as the other students. In my opinion sometimes the best art is the smallest. The small size invites the viewer to get a closer look!

      I agree that I got the most depth with the griffin, I really was running out of time so it disappoints me that the other two didn't come out as well. But it is acryla gouache - I may go back to the Leviathan and lighten some areas and darken some, but I don't know quite how to add more depth to the unicorn. Also I got I guess the equivalent of "honorable mention" at the show? That's how I'd translate it. So that is nice! There's a first place of 2, second place of 2, then me and 1 other!

    What a cool video! It is so cool you are going to art school in Japan! Are you fluent in the language? I’m looking forward to watching your other videos. I think the most interesting assignment for me was the cubes.

      @HannahMorenDraws 27 днів тому

      I agree! The cube assignment was the last one and it was the most fun. I am not quite fluent but I am "proficient." So I can get by and I passed a proficiency test that allowed me to apply!

    Weird. I never got a notice of your video! Loved your paintings! Would they accept them as a series or did you have to submit them one by one? As a series, then maybe size won't matter? I really love them all but the Griffen is my favorite. When will you know the results?

    • @HannahMorenDraws
      @HannahMorenDraws Місяць тому

      Thanks for watching and subscribing!!! It means a lot to me - I've heard notifications are an issue so a lot of youtubers say to like hit the bell? the notification bell? but that's kind of annoying I think! So for this competition our teacher said series were better so they could get an idea of our "vision" so it's submitted as a series! I just found out this week I got like the equivalent of "honorable mention" when I translate it! So it's something! I think the Griffin came out the most balanced - I really spent so much time on the sample paintings for that one and split it up more when working on it - the other two got a bit...crammed in... Anyway, thanks for watching!

    You are pretty💕 thank you for taking us with you to supply shopping! I have never seen those kind of art supply shops. It looks like such a cool place to wash the eyes with! I have always wanted to try drawing on a shikishi board but I would probably be too afraid to ruin it. They seem to be pretty affordable, at least compared to what I can fined sold online.the little painted ones are so cute! I love them! I always thought that the yellowish side with the gold spatter is beautiful and wished to see art painted on that side, that is a good, happy "mistake". Thank you for another glimpse into your life and your art! Sending pats to your adorable cat, I love him so much❤ maybe he can model for you as a subject to one of your paintings😉

      Thanks so much for watching and for the compliment! Definitely try it! I tried it when I first bought it on vacation and was much more precious about it, but now that I am here they are pretty inexpensive (especially at this place!) I do think they don't take super watery media well - so I've been using markers but I'd like to try acryla gouache!. One painting on the wrong side might be a silly mistake, but I drew FIVE on the wrong side... Oh well!
