Visit East of England North America campaign
Discover the rolling countryside and unspoilt coast of the East of England where more than 350,000 US servicemen and women of the Eighth Air Force in World War II fought bravely to bring democracy back to Europe. In the words of Winston Churchill, they became Masters of the Air. Their arrival brought The Friendly Invasion.
They were billeted near quaint, pretty villages and drank warm beer with their hosts in traditional English country pubs. They introduced Coca Cola, chewing gum, peanut butter and more. On time off they explored the historic cities of Norwich, Ely, Cambridge, and Bury St Edmunds, as well as the waterways of the Broads, now a National Park.
Those servicemen and women who were here 80 years ago would still recognise the region - its castles, cathedrals, stately homes, pubs, tea rooms, higgledy-piggledy villages, and a big welcome from the locals. Oh yes, and the warm beer.
Today, we look forward to a second Friendly Invasion… of visitors eager to explore the East of England.

Exceptional thanks to those who revitalised this memorial to the Greatest Generation, Thorpe will be a lasting legacy to them all. When you pay respects those wonderful people who greet you with friendliness and warm, you're all a credit to the fallen and those bets still around, many thanks.
I would absolutely love to visit. My dad’s first cousin was Gale Cleven (my 2nd). I heard many stories of him growing up. We are so used to having our last name mispronounced, but I just wanted to say it’s pronounced Cl + even.
Thank you to are brothers of the U.S.A for your service ❤ GOD BLESS❤❤❤
Thank you for showing this! My great grandfather was 1st Lieutenant James W. Kiser Sr, a Boeing B-17 bombardier with the 95th Heavy Bomb Group stationed there before bailing out over Hanover in '44 after raiding over Berlin on March 4. Grateful to know him for the first almost 7 years of my life before he past away. 24 now, still have many of his uniforms, medals and other things still in my family. Miss him very much!
I recently finished reading Masters of The Air & it was EXCELLENT. While we didn't have anyone in the Air Corp in WWII we did have one in the Navy & one in the Marines. I feel truly fortunate to have heard some of their stories first hand, we miss you Brownie & Norm. Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. FLY NAVY!!!
That's really awesome and appreciated that the locals do this for the airmen and their families. They don't have to do it, but they still show their appreciation for the men of another country who were stationed outside their town all those years ago. Much respect for everyone involved. Thank you.
Great days , even with a war going on people had so much more integrity and honor 🎖 as some of these feral folk ya see today,no comparison
Dewey look 74 at most
Very good video but if you turned off the music, we could hear these vets ; otherwise their speech is muffled.
“Never has so much be owed to so few”
What would the world be like today if they hadn’t laid their lives on the line to beat the Nazis?
Incredible. Those men will live on for eternity English and American!
Flew my airplane. Great!
My great uncle, my grandmother's brother was in world war two, in the Pacific. I didn't even know he served until after he passed.
Excellent video and people 👍
The greatest generation of them all
Great work by all concerned - THEN and now! We must always remember and rejoice for their presence. And well done to the spirit of all who worked to keep the memories alive at the location here.
Truly Beautiful!!❤🥺
This American can not thank you enough for what your doing. I am also to young to remeber the war but I knew so many who'd served men and women I hold in high reguard. Thank you from the depths of my heart for keepin their memory alive. God Bless you all.
Great people to come back to where they fought for freedom .
Humility stands out in the war generation. As opposed to the shallow self promoting me me me, new generation.
It’s a shame that Thorpe Abbotts is one of the few bases partly preserved ,out of so many.
Good to see that there are plans in the works for Bungay (Flixton)....more power to the elbow!👍🏻👍🏻
heroes
Lest we forget.
...my dad was stationed at Great Ashfield with the 350th BG...got there shortly after D Day...
thanks
Thank you for this video! These men sacrificed, many with their lives. After all these years to create a place they can visit, to remember fellow crew members, friends or an old barracks they slept in while stationed there is comforting. Sadly, there are few of these warriors left. It's good to know the good people of England haven't forgotten their cost of freedom. Freedom isn't free. Thanks!
It was announced on TV this year that the Shipdham aero club was closing down.
That was good, thank you for sharing.
Thank you
My father was a ball Turret gunner also stationed here. I hope to visit one day.
Such brave men.
/
The amount of names on the wall is very sobering
Thank you Cambridge for donating this beautiful piece of land - and to all of the British people, over the generations, for your respect and care for these fallen heroes.
Visited several times, its well worth a look.
Must do a ground visit soon. First flew over here in 2015.
I would love to visit there. My father was with the 8th Air Force in England. He went to a university that had military training. My father and most of the guys had already joined the Army Air Force prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was pretty obvious that war was coming with what was happening in Europe at that time. Thank goodness, he managed to survive, though they ended up having to land in Sweden on their last flight. They were bombing the Polesti Oil Fields in Poland on that particular day and were hit by flack on their way out, knocking out tow of their engines, meaning there was no way they were going to make it back to England. Thank goodness they managed to get to Sweden and stayed there until the military was able to get them out. My father and the rest of the men were considered POW/MIA, since their plane did not make it back to the base. I pray that they all Rest in Peace. Thank you for your sacrifice.
My uncle was a waist gunner on a B-17 in the 95th. His plane went down on April 6,1945, with all crew lost--one month before VE Day.
I also appreciate the respect and commitment of our British allies in caring for my great-uncle, Private First Class Elbert R. "Tuffy" Howe's grave site. He was with the 101 ABN Div. and was KIA 21 November 1943. Rest in peace, Tuffy.
From this Brit, who has enjoyed 50 years of freedom courtesy of your great-uncle and his comrades, my eternal thanks.
My great uncle was in the 95th 336 H. at Horham. Lt. Richard Portmann Navigator 44/45, 26 missions. His brother, my grandfather, was a Lt(JG) on the DD501 in the Pacific. Their father was a Maj. in the US Army 89th 353rd Co E WW1, Silver Star, Purple Heart, Belgian Order of Leopold. A different breed of men. We don't make them like that anymore. Rest easy gents. Thank, you.
You have captured a piece of history - well done!
My uncle was a US Army Air Corps tail gunner in WWII. He spent time in Britain. He survived, thank God. Lovely to see the great care taken for those killed.
If bribery and conflicts of interest connected to abuse of powers is proof stealing of resources is in progress !!!
@03:43 ever wonder why men turn the props over like this in old movies. This actually has a purpose. On round engines like what the these WWII aircraft have Pratt & Whitney or the Wright Cyclone engines on the bottom cylinder if the engine hasn't been ran in a while or usually after 30 minutes after shutdown oil begins to drain to the lower most cylinder and they turn the prop over like that so when they started up it doesn't hydraulic lock. If that does hydraulic lock like that they can just take out the two spark plugs on the bottom most cylinder drain the oil out of the spark plug holes reinstall the spark plugs and start it up This is the reason why on startup it smokes because all the oil drains to the lower most cylinder
Very moving video tribute. I will make it to that museum one day!
I wonder if that pubs still there.
Definitely worth a visit, though it's not easy - they are only open once a month. (I reviewed it this summer on my site)
Thanks for the warning. I really need to go there, and I'd hate to show up at the wrong time.
Where in Norwich is this?
the bloody 100th...
