Golden Hollywood: Gene Tierney and Baby Daria
Gene Tierney was absolutely one of the most beautiful women to grace the silver screen in golden Hollywood. Gene married dress designer Oleg Cassini and found herself pregnant with her first child in early 1943.
With World War II raging in Europe and the Pacific, Hollywood stars contributed to the war effort by working shifts at the Hollywood Canteen, signing autographs, posing for pictures, pouring coffee, and passing out donuts. Right before a move to Kansas for her husband's army training, Gene pulled one last shift at the Canteen.
She woke up days later with German Measles or Rubella. Keep in mind, there was no vaccination for measles, mumps, or rubella at this time. After a week of bedrest, the family moved as planned, and the remainder of the pregnancy progressed as normal.
Until baby Daria was born premature, blind, deaf, and severely impaired. Her birth defects were traced back to the rubella Gene contracted early in pregnancy.
Gene and Oleg were devastated. They sought the care of the best doctors in the world for Daria. It was clear that Daria would need more care than they could give at home, so she was institutionalized at a facility in New Jersey.
Gene never recovered from the blow of Daria's birth. Two years after Daria was born, a woman approached her at a tennis match. The woman met Gene at the Canteen, and wondered if she ever caught German Measles. Apparently, the woman broke quarantine just to meet Gene on her last night. She had German Measles, and was always curious if Gene caught it.
Gene just turned at walked away.

Down Syndrome in Vietnam
Переглядів 2746 років тому
I was out and about the other day, and met a wonderful lady from Vietnam. Of course, I always have to whip out the pictures of Dale to show everyone, since he is the most handsome kid in the world (from a super biased mama lol). The woman smiled and instantly recognized the fact Dale has Down Syndrome. That surprised me, since most people simply smile, but never say anything about Dale's recogn...
Paranormal and Special Needs Kids
Переглядів 1956 років тому
HAPPY EARLY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!!!!! We've all heard the rumors about Paranormal and our kids with special needs. I've heard them all, and I'm sure you have too! You know, the rumors about kids with special needs being closer to the veil, being able to see ghosts, being able to see things that we boring, stuffy adults cannot, and all that fun stuff. Of course, since Dale can't talk, I'll never ...
Chewy Tubes

You can find one for every need, from a child who is just starting to teeth to an adult who has a full set of teeth. Dale is particularly fond of the double grabbers that have textures and flavors. The Early Years - Birth to 3
Переглядів 956 років тому
The early years with a child with special needs feel a lot like being tossed into the deep end of a swimming pool when you have no idea how to swim. Your child's pediatrician can be a lifeline in providing suggestions on how to find services that will help! For info on your state's birth to three program, go to google and type in birth to three program and your state's name. That should be a st...
Dream Factory Wish Trip

Hello everyone! In February, the Dream Factory gave us the greatest gift! Our family was lucky enough to travel to Orlando, Florida to Give Kids the World Village. We found such a GREAT place to take Dale.......SkyZone!!!! If you have one in your area, you should totally try it out! It's one of those trampoline parks, with a few different perks, like Trampoline Basketball, an obstacle course, ultimate dodgeball (ouch), and all sorts of classes and camps for kids and adults both. Ours even has glow jump, which is where they turn on the black lights and eve...

Since we only had six days in Florida, and a LOT to...
Our Melt Down Helment
Переглядів 1,8 тис.7 років тому
Hi everyone! I hope you are having a fantastic week so far! One of the more trying by-products of Dale's autism are the meltdowns. Thankfully, they are few and far between now, but at one time, he would have upwards of seven a day. They were very trying times, and our main concern was keeping him safe until the meltdown was over. Generally, a full blown meltdown consisted of a lot of self injur...

Hello! I hope you are all managing to stay cool during this hot, hot summer! Our favorite way to cool off is heading to our local indoor pool and splashing around. Dale would live there if he could! My mom was very touched by Genes tragedy over baby Doria. My mom wasn’t like a rabid type of fan of actresses but this bothered her so much. My mom studied music and actually went to high school with Ellen Bernstein aka Burstyn. Even seeing her at a HS reunion. Mom was nice, just not all gushy if you know what I mean

Not to be rude...but my mom made these for my son back in the 90s when he was 10. He has cerebral palsy, autism and IDD. She put stretch binding around the neck hole to where they would fit a bit tighter and now allow drool and food to fall down into them.

Made adult ones for my Aunt! She is crazy 11:19 about it! I bought a cheap beach towel in her FAVORITE color, BRIGHT ORANGE! Ribbing was super as the neck lining! That took a bit of practice. Pinned it at all 4 quarters first. I wish I’d taken a picture of the finished bib. As soon as she saw it, she grabbed it & took it home!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE IDEA!

Aww I love that u included a clip of him in the video. My son is 12 and has cerebral palsy and he makes a disaster when he eats but really food is what he probably enjoys most. I have been looking for months for an easy to make bib for him and I think if I can manage to see this one I’d like to make one for the kids at his school too

I am a borderline high functioning autistic with iq of 72 mild retardation.I went to sky zone sensory jump from 9-11@m but sky zone in Baton Rouge closed.I guess you can say I have aspergers if I had been diagnosed before 2013.I was born June 28 1978.I met a boy named Sean at sensory jump who is autistic. He goes to beyond gymnastics offers special needs gymnastics classes in Baton Rouge.I suggest find a gymnastics school and ask them to start a special needs program if they don’t already have one.I love gymnastics and trampoline parks.Airbourne extreme in Denham has sensory jump that I go to.

I made similar bibs, but without any sewing. I used a vinyl fabric that is easy to wipe off, and traced one of her old bibs. I did hand sew on snaps, but the fabric doesn't fray, so that was the only sewing. We use silicone plates, so when we tuck it under her plate it sticks pretty nicely. Great video!

I remember when those stupid "Tooth Tunes" toothbrushes came out, and I thought they would be the greatest things in the world. Not even close - Dale wouldn't let me get NEAR him with it, lol!!!! Now, between tooth brushing, shaving, and trying to keep his skin clear, we spend a lot of time primping in the bathroom!

I am going to try these! What I've always done for William is a cloth diaper cover. There's a woman on etsy (MissingKinks) she makes them for the fetish community. But she also has a shop making cloth diapers for babies, so she knows what she is doing. She made me a custom one that fits william and will for some time. I never imagined there would be swim diapers that fit our bigger kids.

Amen mama! We got a safety bed also and it is a life changer! We worried about fecal smearing on the netting, so we went with the Sleep safer bed with the extension and padding. It was a lot of work getting it covered, but it was worth it. I made a light with Christmas lights and put that above it, so he has some twinkle at night, and we are all so much more rested. I can't imagine anyone with a severely autistic child sleeping at night without a safety bed.

I think it's a good idea for anyone who likes being in the water to wear swim diapers. However potty trained one may be, it's not always possible to make it in a timely manner to the toilet when you need to go. I'm a 44 yr old male, and I still wet myself, sometimes I've even pooped myself when I don't want to.
