The I-16 was the words first all-metal minoring fighter, of course it’s going to be obsolete when WW2 rolled around, the fact it shit down any aircraft during the war I would say is a testament to the design. And the Yaks were some of the best fighters of the entire war!

+Lord Walder Frey Far from it. Although obsolescent, they could outmanoeuvre the 109. The German pilots got a shock, though not as big a shock as in 1940, when the 109 met the Spitfire.

German pilots also noted that it wasn't the planes themselves that were the weakness of the early Soviet air force, but rather their outdated tactics and pilots fighting individually rather than as a team. Used in the infamous mid-air ramming attacks they proved their ruggedness however and at extremely low altitute they were difficult to intercept.

+galdramadur1 Well, maybe just for the fact that the enemy had a fighter which was every bit as good as theirs? It is said that Spitfire and Bf-109 were so comparable that it really came down to pilot skill. Hurricane was clearly inferior though (probably roughly comparable to the I-16), and that's why during Battle of Britain Spits would tackle the escorting fighters while Hurricanes went for the bombers, given any choice.
