Curtis & Loretta at Oak Center General Store, Nov 20, 2021
Oak Center General Store was a legendary folk music venue in southern Minnesota for many years. Our deepest thanks to owner Steven Schwen, who presented countless concerts and discussion forums there over the years. We played there many times, and this is the last concert we did there, on Nov 20, 2021. It was the first concert Steven presented after the pandemic, and he hoped to revive the concert series, but it was not to be. Turn up the sound at the beginning to hear Steven's introduction, since he wasn't using a microphone.

Curtis & Loretta interview Lester and Bernice Schrenk
Переглядів 953 місяці тому
Lester Schrenk is a WWII hero. He was shot down during the war, spent time in a POW camp, and was forced on the "German Death March." This is the "rest of his story," how he met and married his true love, Bernice after the war, and the first few years of their life together. We interviewed the couple on April 2, 2015. Loretta wrote a song about Lester's heroic acts during the war, titled "I Wil...

    I salute you, Les. I came across your comment on another UA-cam video, where you just so matter of factly described your heated suit burning you and also causing you frost bite. You described it like it was nothing, then you said you only did your duty. But you did so much more. How many people survived that dark time because you "did your duty"? I'm sure you will have shot down or discouraged a fighter or two that would have otherwise chalked your ship up as another kill on the side of their cockpit. You guys were recklessly sent into German airspace in daylight because of foolhardy brass with 0 experience, ignoring the advice of the battle hardened RAF who took the wise decision to bomb at night. And you did so seemingly without complaint, if your comments elsewere are anything to go by. You literally faced a brutal end to existence every time you flew. I salute you, and your comrades, all over them. Whether they made it home or not. You are truly from the greatest generation, never to be seen again. Thank you, for doing your duty.

    Was listening to the Longest Johns' cover of this song and UA-cam recommended this one. It's fascinating to see two different groups of people cover the same song in such different ways. Both are excellently done, but this one is wistful and makes me think of something that might be song during the hard times; a prayer for change. Whereas the LJ version is more upbeat and almost celebratory and makes me think of a song sung after a rough period is over to ward away future hardships. In short, this version is sung in the tunnel looking for the light, while the LJ version is sung on the other end in hopes that you don't have to go into another tunnel. Fascinating how the human element can create such a big difference between two songs which, on paper, are identical (or very close).

    • @CurtisLoretta
      @CurtisLoretta Рік тому

      Thanks for listening! Yes, each musician's interpretation can be so different. I think Stephen Foster was brilliant while writing this song. You are totally correct - when we sing this song, I think of it as a prayer and almost an affirmation, that hard times will not come again!

    Very nicely done. This song is my favorite of Foster's work , a departure from his body of work writing mainly for minstrel shows. I would disagree with the assertion that it was written during a depression however. The economy in 1854 was expanding, mostly as a result of the California Gold Rush. A severe depression came in 1857, largely as a result of economic overexpansion in the early 1850s. Of course there are always plenty of poor people e even in "good times. " The depressions in the 1800s came in 1819, 1837, 1857, and 1893. Anyhow thanks for the great music.

    Hi folks. Just heard this today on the radio. Such an extraordinary song and such beautiful uplifting lyrics. I can relate to this song too. My late husband was a recipient of organs from an "angel from God" and he was given three more months to be with me thanks to that gift. I will never take for granted or forget. Your song is heart felt and such a perfect way of thanking those who give to the ultimate.
