Master the craft of Handweaving! Whether you are a complete beginner weaving on a Rigid Heddle loom, or more advanced and working on four or eight shafts, you will know how much there is to learn and experience in weaving. I am a weaver and weaving teacher living in South Africa, and I would like to share some of my experience with you.
How to join two handwoven panels
Too often we avoid making bigger pieces formed by joining two panels together because we are unsure about how to make a stable, but still supple seam, which is also neat and flexible.
In this video I take you through how to do this using a simple back-stitch and oversewing the edges.
Needlework is not my strong suite, but I do find that doing this by hand, rather than using the sewing machine always yields the best results.
If you're not sure about how to weave two panels that are exactly the same length, you can look at my video which details "My top tips for accurately measuring your weaving" . ( ua-cam.com/video/h6-rEDuasEI/v-deo.html)
This link is not live, but you can search for the video on my channel.

How to weave on a rigid heddle loom - new course alert!
Переглядів 53814 годин тому
A new course that answers two of the most frequently asked questions in Rigid Heddle weaving: Understanding colour, and how to weave Waffle Weave. A really super bright and cheerful project, over an hour of video instruction time, details colour blending in weaving and two methods for weaving waffle weave. A download and print workbook and pattern helps to make referencing easier. Work at your ...
How to change colour when weaving a plaid or a Tartan
Переглядів 34319 годин тому
Frequent colour changes when weaving a tartan or a plaid can quickly become untidy and clumsy. May of us are tempted to try and carry the colours up the selvedge in order to avoid cutting and joining all the colours, and this is always a disaster. A simple overlapped join also can be problematic, resulting in a build up along the selvedge on the side you make your joins. I use a split ply join ...
How to make an indirect warp with two threads simultaneously
Переглядів 4046 місяців тому
i don't often post for harness weavers, but that is going to change a little I think..... For all of us, making a warp using the indirect warping method can be quite a challenge and time consuming - especially if there are mutlltple colour changes, or a vast number of warp ends. Using this method can halve the time that it takes to wind your warp on the warping frame. It might look complex, but...
How to sample efficiently on your rigid heddle loom
Переглядів 1,2 тис.9 місяців тому
Most of us avoid the thought of sampling when we weave, citing the amount of 'waste' yarn that we would generate, let alone the time that we would waste too. My answer to these arguments is to ask how much waste you would generate, and how much time you would waste if you started a project entirely on the wrong foot and it ended up as a complete disaster? Sampling for weaving is NEVER a waste. ...
How to use the 'Lashing on' method for tying on your warp
Переглядів 8039 місяців тому
The 'Lashing on' method of securing your warp has several advantages. First of all, it gives you a very fine adjustment of tension. Secondly, there is minimal warp waste, and certainly, if you are working with a very wide warp, the it makes a lot of sense to use this method. Under normal circumstances, I prefer to use a direct tie-on when I am working on a narrow warp, but in this instance I ch...

I am delighted to be able to tell you that my new "Rigid Heddle Consolidation Course"will launch on Friday 12th April!! This course has been such a long time coming - mainly because I wanted to be certain that the information I was offering was presented in a clear, concise and accurate manner. Suitable for an absolute beginner, or for someone who has some weaving experience already, the aim is...

TAKE CARE OR YOUR HANDS - THEY'RE THE ONLY PAIR YOU HAVE! A short clip to demonstrate the best way to wind a warp on to your rigid heddle loom without help, and keep an even tension, while protecting the health of your hands. Our hands are so important to us, and knowing which part can handle the load can help us avoid strain and possible injury. It is quite feasible to wind a warp on to your l...
Weaving tools - not the normal ones, just a few of the most useful....

In this video, I give you a quick tour of my weaving toolbox. It is small and compact, and I'm not talking about shuttles and pick-up sticks here, but the small, perhaps slightly unusual things that make my weaving life so much easier. Who knows, perhaps they will make a difference in yours too.
The best method for changing colour in your warp, and how to warp alternating colours.
Переглядів 1,2 тис.10 місяців тому
I think it is safe to say, that as weavers we all have our preferred way of doing things. This is my method for changing colours in the warp, using the direct warping method. Not only is it the better way of doing things from a point of tension stability, but it is also the quicker and easier way to change colours in your warp. As a little bit of a bonus, I have also included an instruction on ...
What is a "Balanced Plain Weave" and what are the other two main weave structures?
Переглядів 52711 місяців тому
All too often we get stuck in a comfortable 'balanced plain weave' rut - but there are other wonderful weave structures out there that offer different challenges and possibilities. From totally warp faced, to totally weft faced, join me for a few minutes as I try and guide you through just a few of them, and make sense of some of the terminology, that can be rather confusing!
Houndstooth video 3 Winding on and seperating
Переглядів 46011 місяців тому
Winding the warp onto the warp roller with care and precision is an essential part of creating a good tension for your project. Use plenty of separation. Whether you choose to use a continuous form of separation, or whether you go with cardboard strips such as I use here, is entirely a matter of personal choice. What is important is that the separation is robust enough to withstand considerable...
How to read a colour threading draft for rigid heddle weavers
Переглядів 37011 місяців тому
Although, as rigid heddle weavers, we generally don't need to know how to read a weaving draft, when it comes to specialized colour and weave patterns, we do need to know how to read a threading draft, both for the slots during the direct warping process, and then for the drawing through of the holes. It really is very simple, once one understands how it is all put together, and it allows one t...
Does a rigid heddle weaver need to know how to read a weaving draft?
Переглядів 40111 місяців тому
A weaving draft, in all its glory, can be a pretty intimidating thing for the uninitiated. For a beginner on a rigid heddle loom however, all weaving instructions are written in plain language, and the reading of a draft is not a necessary skill - so please, don't let the idea that you have to decipher some strange, foreign code put you off beginning to weave - if you can read English ( or what...
How to quick unpick your weaving

we've all been in the situation, where we're weaving happily on a nice, complex little pick-up or lace pattern, and whoops! - There is is a mistake - glaring at you! The thing is that 'unweaving' a complex pattern is a real bind because you have to replicate all the pick-ups that make up the pattern in order to rectify your error - and sometimes it's just so difficult to see exactly what you di...

Is that how you would seam if it was a thicker material, say like a blanket? Thank you for a great podcast
Thank you! For some reason I can’t wrap my head around those drafts. I have Jane Patrick’s book and have used it a bit. I’ve been frustrated when seeing RHL patterns from (for instance) Little Looms (Interweave) that I don’t know how to interpret. I have no idea how to thread the loom based on the instructions. I just found your channel and really love your clear, concise tutorials 😊
Thanks for this tip. I always end up with uneven color on my edges from poking the tails in on the edge.
Nice and simple! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing those informations
Thank you a lot for your video but I don’t understand why it would be ridiculous to tie the new thread with the last thread in the case of houndstooth? Sorry for my bad English I’m French
This was great information that was hampered by being almost completely out of focus re: the camera.
Hunting threads now, looking forward for this! Thank you!
@patytrico so pleased you like the look! Keep an eye out for more info over the nest couple of weeks.... I'm excited about it too.....
I await !! Also, am 75 yr old and have my great grandmother's lace table cloth from the latter 1870s . It is a mess! I na kenna i way to fix it, but some sharp lassie might. Know any?
@nancydelu4061 sorry Nancy. This is a bit out of my wheelhouse - perhaps try and make contact with a Lacemakers guild if there is one in your area.
Thank you Glynis!
That’s wonderful! I’ve put off doing a plaid for the changes issue! Thank you for sharing
That works like a charm!
I needed to watch this video today. I've always hated my selvedges because of the carries... and now I know what to do. Thank you Great Aunty Glynis!
I've been agonizing over this procedure...your video helped immensely.
Great to hear that you found this helpful Cathy - thanks for letting me know.
Thanks for the great explanation. ❤
I love your video. If you happen to do another one where you either use a larger weft yarn or maybe have the camera closer so we can see a little better, would you please tag it? Thank you!
was wondering if you could help me find a pattern. I am looking for the black rose tartan pattern
Do you have a video on hemming the other end
the process is exactly the same Leanne - you just bring the needle across at the back and down so that it anchors onto the the weaving, instead of taking the needle across and up where there is nothing for it to anchor into.
Lovely video thank you. I heard elsewhere that people put monofilament fishing line at the selvage to keep it straight and take it out at the end of weaving ? For myself I’m wondering how to use a wiggly selvage to good effect in more artistic efforts.
This is the best explanation I have found. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this informative lesson. Seeing your samples really helps! 👍👍👍
Perfect and easily understood. Thank you.
Hello, I have been crocheting for over 55+ years , I am now 64 year old and would love to learn how to weave, I have been searching for someone like you that shows and explains everything there is to know about weaving on a Rigit Heddle loom. I will be registering and taking your online class as soon as I can get a loom. May I ask you please, what loom is it you are using?
Hi Sandra - so pleased that you find my information useful. I use the Ashford Knitters Looms. They come in three sizes - 30cm, 50cm and 70cm, with the 70cm being the most useful because of the extra width. I love these looms becaus ethey are so light and portable and comfortable to use.
@@glynisweaves Thank you!! 😘 What is the difference between a rigid Heddle loom and the Knitters loom?
@sandrabenesch2816 the Knitters loom is the model that folds up - highly portable and easy to store - also much lighter than the standard RH
Brilliant! Thank you
@@mammaearly great pleasure!
❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for the clear explanation.
@maryjamerson8288 great pleasure Mary. Pleased you found it useful
You're so right about not focusing too much on them. I've often found that after washing and finishing a woven piece the selvedges sort of right themselves, so they don't look as bad as when it's straight off the loom.
Personally I find that we obsess too much about our selvedges. We are not machines - we're human and we're allowed some imperfections - we need to learn to embrace these imperfections! Not saying this as an excuse for bad workmanship mind you .......he-he!
Thank you for showing us how to get even selvedges. I like how you put pressure on the warp thread at the folded over end and then give the weft yarn on the other end a gentle tug to seat the edge. I am definitely going to give this a try tomorrow morning. I think this will speed up my weaving considerably. I won't have to fiddle around with the weft so much. I get so excited when I learn a new technique that solves my problem areas! I am definitely going to subscribe to your channel.
Thank you...helpful, indeed.
This is really great!
Thanks very much Glynis! Super helpful as it has been frustrating with guessing! ❤
Am interested in your course but did not get your email address can you please send it to me.
@marylambert6319 hello Mary. My e mail address is glynis@brooklands.co.za and my website is www.brooklands.co.za. you will find the course under the ' workshops and courses tab. I'll look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Mimi. if you are interested in the on-line course here is the link: brooklands.co.za/rigid-heddle-consolidation-course/. It wasn't available when I made the promo video. There are lots more videos in the pipe-line which will start coming out in the new year, and also a new on-line course...... so pleased that you find the information useful. P.S there is a link to my website where you find the on-line courses under the banner at the top of the page.
What a neat trick❤. Many thanks Glynis once again 🙏
Thanks again Glynis. Another great tip🙏. So logical when you think about it ❤
Thank you for this❤. I needed to transfer to a smaller reed a while hack and the way i did it was much messier and inefficient to boot.
You're welcome Franscesca - it's a little bit finicky, but there's no reason why it can't be done quickly and efficiently.
Thanks for sharing your weaving knowledge!
Pleasure Rose - glad you found it helpful.
Glynis, thank you so much for this video. I have tried this technique in the past and couldn't really see any advantage but thanks to your excellent explanation I can see where I was going wrong. I have watched nearly all your videos and just want you to know how much they are appreciated by a beginner like me. Thank you!
So pleased that my video helped to clarify things a little.
Thanks Glynis - this helped a beginner here! Lekke lekke!
So pleased you found it useful - and welcome to a most wonderful new world. Hi Polly - there is a video on my channel on yarn wraps - very useful thing to know how to do and use. Never an exact answer, but an excellent guideline.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. 🥰
Fantastic teaching! Thankyou!
You're welcome Lynda!
I’ve never seen anyone do this, hence I have never tried it. Does this work on cotton as well as wool? Thank you!
Hi Pam - absolutely. it works on any fibre - in fact my little demo is cotton.....
I thought I understood this method well, but you gave a aha moment when you tied the lefthand string and then started to fiddle with the tension. I usually pulled from right to left until there was no more give in the string and the warp too tight. Thank you very much.🎉🎉
