I'm Toby Billing, my Channel brings you real Gold Mining, Metal Detecting and history plus heaps more! This is real prospecting, no fake finds or dramatic rubbish and we show it how it is with tips and advice to help you find gold as well.
Mixed though with whatever stuff we may happen to do while exploring Australia and the odd tinker with firearms and explosives (all licenced and legal ;-) )
I'm the head of Billing Metals (metals/elements trading and manufacturing plus mining and blasting business). I'm an inventor, tinkerer and mad scientist and really enjoy helping and encouraging others and that was why I started this channel, plus it's a mighty good reason to get out in the bush!
If there is anything you would like too see us do or if you have any feedback please get in touch. Lastly, if you have not already subscribed please support the channel by hitting the Subscribe button so you don't miss any of our great new clips and help us make more and better videos.

Explore a 1910's Gold Mine, Massive Quartz Reef and Timbers
A really interesting gold mine from around the 1910's with timbers still in place. It's a long adit heading East until it intersects the reef and there is a well timbered south drive with the bottom of a stoped area near the end.
The surface at that point is a long way above and there are significant workings and mullock heaps up there. There is some air flow coming from both the filled end of the adit and the bottom of the stope.
Most of this mine is pretty solid but there are some dangerous rock wedges and the area under the stope is extremely dangerous. Please DO NOT go into old mines unless you have the knowledge and experience to do it safely. If you do go underground look after the history of our goldfields, please don't damage stuff!
This mine is South of Ballarat, if you know the mine please don't share the location to help protect the historic features from being damaged by others.

Opening my Reef Diggings, Metal Detecting Gold part 1

I'm cleaning out and re-opening these gold workings on a quartz reef I found and opened up about 12 years ago, it's been abandoned for about 5 years due to being patchy and hard to mine. I hit a nice patch of specimen here and there is a fair bit of nice gold coming out in this video! It's also by far my longest clip I've made to date. Let me know what you think, better to have slightly shorter...
The Asbestos Tunnel, Exploring an Alluvial Gold Mine

A small but pretty cool alluvial mine near Linton in Victoria, this is from the 1850/60's goldrush era with original bush timbers still intact, mostly. This would have been dug into the older shafts to work the left over ground more efficiently after the main rush had subsided. Unfortunately some fool, criminal actually, has dumped large amounts of asbestos waste into one of the shafts and it's...
Danger Explosives Detonators, blowing up a glove

An old demonstration of the power in detonators is blowing up a glove with one. As detonators are not an uncommon find in old hardrock gold mining areas I recreate it here with an old plain detonator (ye ole style crimp in fuse) and a more modern electric detonator to show what may happen if one goes off in your hand. Interestingly the plain det, an old Indian made ICI one, did not explode prop...
Old Car Adit, exploring a Gold Mine Tunnel

Exploring an old goldmine, this one is a long tunnel that starts off with plenty of room and gets smaller and smaller as we go further in. I'm assuming it was accessing ancient hilltop alluvial at the end but as we had just found a Wombat in a nearby adit I was not keen on crawling the last bit! Anyone know what the old car is? It's been there a while. This mine is near Linton in the Victorian ...

Prospecting for gold in Eluvial ground next to old Alluvial gold diggings. This video shows how I prospect for rich gold reefs and alluvial/eluvial ground around old diggings. Metal detecting won't find the gold down at the depth the wash layer sits here so digging holes is the way to go. There is going to be some patches of rich wash left in this gully plus my main aim is to find quartz reefs ...

Exploring a deep lead alluvial Gold mine, under the lava

Come along on an amazing adventure exploring a deep lead alluvial gold mine. Exploring under the Ironstone, an Alluvial Goldmine Tunnel

Looking though a small, very tight, adit under gold rich alluvial ground. The old time miners tunnelled in the weathered slate bedrock under the iron cemented alluvial as that's easier to dig. Enfield Grevillea and bush, Gold Prospecting Tip at the end
i found a lovely piece of granite with gold encrusted on it in the perth cbd. honest! about 40 years ago we had a demolition job stripping everything out of a whole floor of mineral house where the wa department of minerals was based. there were some boxes of rock samples. they went to my place. most of the samples were of the sorts of rock used for gravestones. but there were some other interesting rocks including the piece with gold on it.
Nice find! Gold in granite is unusual but I know of a few occurrence's in Victoria, may be more over West. Great thing to have in your collection.
there used to be a massive piece of a granite-type of rock with the same lumps of gold oozing out of it in the state museum in north perth. i used to wonder why dishonourable people never took a hammer and cold chisel into the museum and chip away at it when no-one was watching. my little specimen seems to be the same sort of granite,
@@vsvnrg3263 That would be cool to see! I wonder what mine it came from.
i was surprised to watch a show on 7mate about a year ago where they were recommending its use in, i think, north east victoria. i thought it was illegal to use it. youve confirmed it. it was an interesting series originally on foxtel.
What is it that they were actually mining from these? They make lots of tunnels but what were they taking out to process for gold?
Hi, they where looking for rich gravels right on the bottom of what was an old riverbed. They'd dig though underneath it, dig it down and wash it in puddlers then a sluice to recover the gold.
Hi, just found your channel, so will be binge watching fora while. Just a suggestion for when you are chipping out a target like at the beginning of this video. I always have a half worn out painters brush that I use to clean off the seam as I chip at it, to help find the target as soon as it is exposed. Great work and video
Thanks for the comment and sub mate, hope you enjoy it. That is very good advice! Very helpful, although as all the gold I miss in this one is going though a crusher and being processed so I'm not as careful with recovery as I would be out in the bush.
18:43, do you have a licence for that haulpak?
Ha ha ha, I think my kids are qualified, I was going to edit it out of the video then thought nah it can stay and see if anyone notices 🤣
Beautifully preserved piece of history right there
It is, it's amazing. So well preserved and it's not been damaged by recent digging or graffiti like so many other mines around.
Toby I think a similar clip on destroying DRC's would be useful too. The old ICI ones look like they fell put of cereal box.
Thanks for the comment mate, that would be a good idea actually, although I don't have any old ones around. Funny story with these dets, I was detecting on a mates place in a dug out gully and hooked out a rusty box, as I threw it up to him a whole heap of these little fellows fell out! I've found a few of them over the years detecting.
There is gold to be found in conglomerates.
There is indeed, a lot was found in this area in it. I've just found patchy conglomerates in a shallow hole I've sunk much closer to home, gold in it too, the video will be up early next year as I've got to do more digging there yet.
Awesome just amazing it just shows the amount of work they have done thanks Toby
Thanks mate, it is incredible how hard the old time miners worked.
It's always a nice feeling finding bit of gold.
It is indeed, a feeling that never goes away no matter how many bits you find, I still get a massive thrill with every single piece.
Cool mine.
Thanks mate, it really is, lots of history there ;-)
Hi Toby, another great video. Thank You. Have you done a video on melting gold.
Thanks for the comment, mush appreciated. I haven't yet, I'll do one at some point mining, refining and casting a pure gold ingot. Sometime next year I'll try to get it done ;-)
Wow what a long way in. You didn't scratch a sample bucket out. Cheers Andy Poverty prospecting Australia
It is a decent size isn't it! Not this trip, I may sample some loose stuff at some point but this mine is too historic and complete to rework without damaging the heritage of it so it's not on my list to be sampled really.
Another great video Toby. Was in there only few months ago busted a few people on there doing stuff that not aloud to. Are you going to do a video of the stamper site and the other adit on the other side?
Thanks mate, glad you liked it. Dare I ask what hey where doing? Or don't I want to know? 😬 It may be a different mine, this site has a shorter adit on the other side of the spur but the closest battery is a good 2 km away and only small. Send me a message and chat in private if you want to know what mine this is, I know you are very protective of them too.
Great tour, thankyou. Those miners did it hard to get the yellow stuff.
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it. That they did! the work they did across the goldfields is incredible, long days and the dreams of wealth combined with the real fear of starving to death must be rather motivating...
Lit vid mate one of the better ones I have a few reefs I'm about to smash so good to see you doing well. Any tips on working around shafts would be good.
Thanks mate, glad you likes it. Be damn careful working around shafts, are you working from the shaft or just in close proximity?
@billingmetals nah just close proximity looking for weathered areas, alluvial and drill hits from surface. But not sure how to go about it.
@@klaasic_e8650 If it's fairly shallow cover work out where the reef runs by looking at the old workings then dig a cross cutting trench to bedrock til you hit the reef or reefs and sample from there. Same for detected patches. It's very effective. Don't forget to tell us all about any finds ;-)
Very cool Toby!
Thanks Steve, it's a brilliant mine! How's the new grandson doing?

Thanks for watching Tony, glad you liked it.
Nice. I’d love to have w look at that mine with you some time. Very interesting geology.
It is an amazing mine to see mate, very interesting geology. it's great to see the easterly leaders, then the west stringers and infill reef before the main reef structure, you can learn a lot for detecting looking at it I think.
What a beauty of a reef, jeez. I'd love nothing more than to sample that haha.
great looking mine looks like there would be some gold in those reefs as well
Thanks for sharing mate. Did they work down or upwards when forming the stope ?
They worked upwards as much as possible as it's so much easier. Most mines without an adit would sink shafts down, drive across to the reef then stope up from there to grossly simplify it. I'd say this one was a bit of both.
Worth a bit of crushing at the end of the line. Very nice demonstration of mine engineering
It would be, this whole area is now a park so no mining, otherwise it would be being drilled now I'd say ;-) It's brilliant to be able to see timbering like this isn't it.
Thanks Toby. very interesting. Do you at times the metal detector with you to see if is any gold in the quartz reefs. Do these mines have any records of what was found?
Love this stuff mate, got nothing like this in my part of England, got a mate that lives in Kinglake VIC and he found a great one like this a couple of weeks back in the bush, not on any maps
My pleasure mate, glad you enjoyed it. There is a surprising amount of workings in the greater Kinglake area that are hidden away. If your mate would like it videoed and featured here (no locations given to protect it of course) I'm happy to drive over there and have a look with him?
Toby, that footage is excellent, thankyou. I've got a long list of mines in your area I'd love to look into....but I'm not game to set foot in any of them. Appreciate your efforts 😊
Thanks mate, glad you likes it. Let me know if you want to meet up and I'll come into them with you and film after I've assessed them for safety.
@billingmetals unfortunately, I moved to far east Gippsland several years ago...if I'm going to be back in the area though, I'll touch base with you. Used to spend a bit of time around Mt Doran, Morrisons etc... 👍

Hey Toby, I saw some Vivianite you were selling on Facebook. I have been to Anglesea at least 5 times in search and have never found any. Did you find yours at low tide past the collapsed cliff section by point Addis? It seems every man and his dog has some vivianite, so I must be doing something wrong. Thanks!
Hi, it is hard to find outside the mining claim a greedy sod put over what was a popular collecting area. It has to be ultra low tide and you can find it either side of the area under claim sometimes. look it up on geovic to see claim boundary's. Good luck, sometimes you'll get pocketful's, sometimes not a piece.
@billingmetals oh wow, didnt know you could claim the ocean! Alright, ill try that. Hope you find the big one in your diggings soon!
@@ManfiCat No I didn't either, when the claim was applied for I assumed it would be denied but no, it was successful somehow! Thanks mate, I'll be doing a whole lot more reef mining the next few weeks so fingers crossed.
Spent a lifetime, it seems, prospecting with mum, dad and the family in this area. Many finds, many stories. Remember meeting Bert Strange and his wife, Bonnie. Bert was an old timer, war veteran, prospector, geologist, historian. He laid out the alluvial workings for Sovereign Hill, wrote history books and more. His wife Bonnie, discovered a number of orchids, native to the area.
It is a great area, great memories for you too. I have heard their names before, I worked at Sov Hill for 11 years. I believe their family are still in Ballarat? Thanks for the great comment 🙂
@billingmetals I recall, back in the 80s, was detecting along the Misery Creek with a Garrett Deepseeker. Found a Chinese coin or two. Stinking hot day, walked back to the car where dad was working down in the creek. There were small pools in the creek for panning, but no flowing water. Dad had cleaned out a long crevice near the edge of the creek. As I approached him, he casually said "feel the weight of this", and flung something at me. The brightest, cleanest nugget you'd hope to hold, coming in just under 5 oz.
@@lindsaybrown7357 Nice! That's a big nugget for this area, lucky to find a grammer these days. Amazing find and fantastic memories, thanks for sharing.
@billingmetals There was a man, the family knew who worked in this area during the depression. He told the story of a young lad living with his family, also working the old sluiced areas. The young bloke took shelter in a shallow shaft during a storm and unearthed a very large nugget. The location was not too far from where the old dredge worked. You've probably seen the remnants of the old dredge and the terraces it produced.
@billingmetals After he found the nugget, we spent weeks there cleaning up the bed and testing along the upstream banks. We probably recovered another couple of ounces in small finds including a 1/4 ounce piece. Notably, the gold we found was always very clean, very yellow, not with any visible impurities. He sold the nugget to Englehardt Industries in Thomastown ( probably gone now), for gold value only. Shame, as it was a beautiful specimen.
As kids, we spent many days exploring tunnels and drives in the Black Hill workings in Ballarat. Some of them were quite hairy as we were often crawling or squeezing our way over roof falls. Also, a number of them had branches and there was always a fear of getting lost. Parents would have had pups if they knew where we were going.
Black Hill is still a great spot, although most have collapsed or been filled. Great way to grow up exploring like that ;-) I'll be doing a video or two in Black Hill soon.
I have been in this mine before 7 or 8 years ago. My friend owns the property just to the east of it in the same gully. Have you explored the other mine just across the seasonal creek from the entrance. Its up the slope a little and last I saw has a car body in it. Thanks for sharing
It's a pretty cool adit, your friend will have good gold on their place ;-) I have not been to that one, I thought it was private property so haven't ventured over there as I don't know the owners to ask. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoy the videos.
@billingmetals he bought the property with a few of his other friends and use it for motor bikes and clay shooting over their dam over the gully. Lot's and Lot's of lead.
