Going to Sea to test a new mast - Finally getting my Steel Sailing Trimaran out to sea again
Well at last I finally get to sea and test the new mast properly.
Its been a long time coming, but I am a normal (well fairly normal) guy with a job and commitments so finding time, money and weather for this sort of thing is not very easy. I have to grab any time I can, when I can.
So this is a video about my boat Pipedream. I built it many years ago from an old chimney (cooling tower) as it seemed to be an easier way to build a boat - it wasn't... The problem with Trimarans is that it feels like every job has to be done three times - add in my mistakes and the fact that one-off boats always require some iteration and I feel like I have now built ten boats.
The story behind this video is that it finally came time to take down the mast, clean it, replace rigging and also finally fix the fact that I originally built it too short. I did this in some previous videos. In this video, I attempt to go test and find out if it was all worth it.
Now if after watching this, you were to feel pity for my constant struggle against my better senses and feel like buying me a chocolate or a beer - here is my PayPal User name:

Why I fix cars - A Maserati does not have to bankrupt you - fixing broken headlight tabs

Is this LEGAL? Fitting the smallest registration plate I can to my CAT S Maserati V8 rebuild project

      Do you mean the metal panel work in the arch? Mine is all light grey from factory, lighter than the car colour, so I suspect they used some neutral primer. The same light grey is in the boot too. When I eventually do the sub frame it will be in black Jotun epoxy. They were black originally. I would probably just my wheel arch inners black too. The fabric wheel arch liners cover it all anyway.

    I'm also afraid of heights, I even get vertigo just seeing people on high up things, but I never get it seeing them on masts, or looking down from a mast, and my fear of heights only started at a team building thing when the whole company was watching me walk on a high wire and my social anxiety some how mixed up in my head and became a fear of heights, and they wouldn't let me take my shoes off to walk across it or let me hold my own safety rope, so that probably had something to do with it too.

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream 2 дні тому

      Yes, I am fine looking down, but when I am up the mast and look up or straight out, that is when it hits. Of course all the work requires me to look up or at the same level. My fear does go after a few hours, but it comes racing back after a couple of days of not being at height. I get social anxiety too, don’t you love it when your mind conspires against you!

    I was impressed by the video. I'm planning to use the ACCUMELATOR made by FOA on eBay. However, I'm a little worried about the small orifice diameter. There seems to be a lot of oil inside the engine, but will the engine's oil be filled and pressure be generated just by the power of the accumulator?

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream 20 днів тому

      I cannot speak for FOA, but my accumulator has a litre capacity and when I press the dump button, the oil pressure light on the dashboard goes out for a couple of seconds, so it must be enough pressure to satisfy the oil pressure switch.

    • @sworkscar
      @sworkscar 20 днів тому

      @@SailingSVPipedream I see, thank you very much. If I leave the car alone for a while, will the oil port become empty? (Even if you open the lid, no oil comes out?)

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream 20 днів тому

      @@sworkscar When I was installing mine, I removed the plug in the oil gallery and it was dry in there. The oil gallery is quite large and drains quickly. With the accumulator installed. I went on holiday and did not start the car for five weeks. When I got back I checked the accumulator and it still had 60psi, so was still full of oil under pressure. I don’t know how long it would keep oil pressure, but I reckon up to 6 months at least.

    Another great DIY video, which will hopefully be useful when I have to do the bushes on my Quattroporte. The subframe corrosion is a bit worrying though - I'll have to look at mine more thoroughly, and maybe use plenty of ACF50 or similar around the seams.

      Thanks very much. Yes, I have no idea why the driver side was worse than the passenger side. Perhaps it spent time in Europe. ACF50 is great, but will need retreating each year, still it definitely gets in there and is easy to apply so I feel it is my best option.

    I watched all your videos about this boat with great surprise and admiration, I always wondered if there would be an steel trimaran because I wanted my future trimaran to be steel (maybe with a little bit thicker steel) 😄. Thank you very much for embarking on such an adventure and sharing this very successful project with us. At the same time, I want to say that I am very sad that this is the last video of this boat. I hope you haven't abandoned this beautiful ship and I hope we can watch her on the water again when she is fully prepared.

      @SailingSVPipedream Місяць тому

      Thanks very much for the kind words. As it happens, I put her in the water yesterday and plan to pop out to sea next week. The refurbed mast is working well. Steel is heavy for multi hulls, however it gives huge peace of mind and is not as heavy as many think. Currently I only get her in the water once a year during August and I did mean to do some more videos, but I struggle to find time.

    I have a 2007 vrod with forward control. The position of the brake leaver in my opinion is wrong.If you look at your mid control brake pedal it is in line and level with the footrest which obviously is correct however like mine your forward brake lever isn't. I had to do two emergency stops due to other driver errors in both circumstances I failed to reach the rear brake pedal because of its positioning end up with front wheel sliding and me coming off. I've never had this problem on any other bike with forward controls before. I'm currently waiting surgery. Please be aware getting to the rear brake with forward controls takes longer because of its positioning

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream 2 місяці тому

      Ouch, yes I have had two front wheel skids now and have got away with it. Once with the original mid control set up and once with Fwd controls. My front tire is old and has gone hard, so that is some of it. However I think the VRod geometry of front forks, skinny front tyre (in comparison to rear) and weight distribution prevents good weight transfer to front tyre under braking. This is the one thing that makes me tempted (if I ever have the cash) to go for a later VRod or Fat Boy with ABS. In the meantime, I have adjusted the brake. Hope you get through surgery quickly and feel better soon.

    are you a genius? I'm currently in Japan trying to fix a strange noise in my variator.

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream 2 місяці тому

      No genius here! Just too poor to pay anyone else and too stupid to quit! Must be nice being in Japan. If yours has an engine number earlier than 148697, then that will be the weaker variators like mine. The accumulator does get round the issue, but the proper fix is new variators and then you might as well do timing chains, solenoids etc. I will do mine in a year or two when I have time and money.
