What Nittynatstitches did in the downtime #1
With 12 months between WIP Parades I have been very busy. This is the first in a series of short journals of the things that have kept me away from flosstube.
In October 2023 I attended the Stitching in the Mountains retreat in Blackheath NSW.

We start very early in the morning with our arrival in Tasmania. Lisa from @ShadyTreezStitchers sings you a song about a pub - which is hilarious. We find some very atmospheric scenery and we meet a cute little native animal. We drive through some quaint towns and get to meet our friends at A Stitch in Time, in Hobart. #tasmania #roadtrip #spiritoftasmania #flosstube

    I learned the loop stitch from this video, about 10 months ago. It truly astonished me to learn a new cross stitching technique after stitching for over 40 years! Now I'm here to learn the finishing techniques! I noticed that you do your first stitch in the cross stitch backwards from how I do it. Then, I suddenly knew why! You live in Australia where many things are reversed compared to the way things are here, near Seattle, Washington, USA! Your toilets swirl opposite from ours, you have Christmas in the summer, etc. That must be the reason for doing your stitch so different from the way I do it! Lol, lmao!

    Late to the game here; just learned about loop start with 1 thread. Trying to learn how to do it with more threads. For the last stitch you do, how many threads are you using? And thanks for the video!’

    Why do you do the pin stitch so far away from the loop stitch?

    • @NittynatStitches
      @NittynatStitches 11 місяців тому

      Hi Connie 👋 great question! It only looks far away because of the magnification. I do the pin stitch so that the future stitches that are coming will be stitched over the tail on the back. So it performs like an away-knot, only neater.

    Very clear explanation. I love loop start and have found it wonderfully neat and convenient both over the years, but I’m not really understanding why one would bother with a loop finish as you still have to anchor the end in some other way. Is there some advantage to it, maybe neatness of how the threads sit or something?

    Excellent! I'm in the U.S. and I love your accent. My question is how do you dye the aida without it shrinking? I tried it one time. My cloth went from a 14 count to a 16 count! Thank you for your great video.

    • @NittynatStitches
      @NittynatStitches Рік тому

      Oh thank you so much. Shrinkage is part of the challenge. Think of what you do to maintain shape of linen/cotton in a normal wash: water not too hot. Cool water rinse. Line dry (don’t put your fabric anywhere near that tumble dryer!!). Then iron when it is mostly dry. I had a little bit of shrinkage, but not too bad.
