We are an Australian couple in our 50's who bought a traditional Japanese house in the countryside through the Akiya Bank [空き家 バンク] system as non-residents of Japan. The house is located between the Iwami Highlands mountain range and the Sea of Japan in a busy farming village on the outskirts of a small, but thriving, coastal city. Please join us as we adventure around Japan and spend time restoring our beautiful Meiji era house.

That bag of coins contains 五銭 (go sen, 5 sen) pieces, or .05 yen. War time/post war era. Pretty interesting how inflation gets, eh? Haha!
So true!! What could we buy with .05 yen these days? 🤣
Just loved exploring these treasures with you. So exciting. Wonderful that you are preserving this history. ❤
Thanks so much! We're definitely going to keep sharing more of these amazing finds. 🤩
So Wonderful. Each time you go over you make a new discovery
Yes! We found a lot more, so I'll throw a few interesting things into videos as we release them ❤
Wow so amazing! Please keep sharing your discoveries ❤️
Thank you so much! More to come very soon 🥰
Wow how amazing to find such treasures hidden away! Have just shown your vlog to my Japanese husband and he is suggesting that the edo era currency notes be offered to a museum as they are so rare and they will continue to perish over time unless properly protected. Have been enjoying your journey in buying and restoring your lovely akiya- thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for your comments! We absolutely agree with your husband. The bank notes are an incredible piece of history and need to be preserved. The city has a local history association, so we will probably consult them (and our kominkan) on what to do with many of the things we've found :)
@@NekoAshiJapan That’s a great idea! It’s possible that they are of national significance. What an incredible find they were!
Wow! That's an exciting thought! We are really looking forward to investigating further 😀
Wow this is fascinating! What an amazing find!
Thank you! .... and there was SO much more, too much for one video :)
Hi Debbie and Jason, Love watching your videos. We are from Brisbane Australia and are looking into buying an Akiya holiday home in the countryside for our family of 8 and spending as much time as possible in Japan. We’ve found numerous houses but are stuck on how to buy a car as this will make it easier for us to get around. It appears to be easier for a foreigner to buy a house than a car. Have you found a work around for this? Renting an 8 seater car for months at a time will be quite expensive.
Hi, and thanks for watching! We are also from Brisbane 😀 Your plans sound very exciting and I'm sure you'll enjoy the big adventure that is purchasing your own akiya! The car situation is an interesting one. I might cover this when we do our first 'live' in the coming weeks. But, I do believe there is a way to purchase a car without residency, as this is something we've also been researching. If you're willing to pay a local consultant to assist, you can contact Nippon Tradings International in Fukuoka, as I believe they have helped others in our situation. Best of luck!
@@NekoAshiJapan thank you for you reply. Look forward to seeing your ‘live’. If we find anything out in relation to purchasing a car that is useful we’ll also let you know.
Man, that coastline is amazing! I'm so glad I live near the beach!
Isn't it beautiful?! It's one of the many reasons we love being here! 😊 Is your coastline surf or more protected?
So great to watch your videos. Thank you, I know how time consuming they are. We are in a similar life stage as you, also from Australia, and have been looking for a Kominka, a little further north. Its time to get serious as we've found a property we like. Just wondering, did you use a consultant to help with the purchase ie translation, building inspection etc? I would love to know if you can recommend anyone - would appreciate any hints and tips.
Thank you so much. It's a wonderful adventure :) We can highly recommend Nippon Tradings International for all Japanese real estate services. Best of luck with your search!
@@NekoAshiJapan Thanks so much, we've spoken with them. Great to know that you recommend them.
I am so proud of your achievements. Hopefully I can get to see it up close and personal
We will make it happen! X
Fantastic! Felt like I was there. Xx
Thank you! ♥️
I imagined the grass to be on the river bank, not in the river itself. Now I understand the necessity to clean it out. Good to have the water so close to relieve the summer heat. Beautiful.
I know! We weren't really sure what to expect for the river cleaning event. Very happy that we made the effort to get involved ❤
Gorgeous coastline....all of Japan, the water is so gorgeous <3 Can't wait to be back in November...but def no swimming lol except in onsen water :)
November is such a prefect time to travel in Japan! My favourite season. Onsens are so wonderful 😍
Really pretty old home! I'm almost sure those blackened beams were blackened on purpose using a really old technique called shou sugi ban (焼杉板). It only chars the outside and protects it. Exterior wood done with it can last decades, and interior wood, like your beams, can last much longer!
Hello and thanks for your kind comments 😊 You could be right about the blackened beams, but we also recently found a centuries old house plan that indicates there may have been kamado ovens in there, used for the sake production. Interesting artefacts that we will share in our next video!
Marvelous house... one of the nicest Japanese house I've seen... Congrats!
Thank you so much! :)
Beautiful place and wise words on respectfully learning some language basics, arigato!
Thank you 😊
We came across an egg dispensing vending machine in Okinawa. All double yokers too😊
Wow! All double yolkers is pretty cool 😎
Not sure if you've mentioned this in your other videos or comments, but what are yoyr plans for this house? Use aa a holiday house, move to Japan for work or retirement? Also, what is the job market like in the surrounding areas? Are businesses struggling for workers? Is there gaps in certain fields of work?
Hi, and thanks for your interest in our story. We are working towards a lifestyle that allows us to live between Australia and Japan. Not sure if you've watched any of our other videos, but we are in our 50s, so retirement isn't too far off. Restoring the house is our current focus and we may even look into recommencing the sake brewing operations..... lots of options for the future :) While the local economy is strong and employment could be an option, we don't have any current plans to work locally (unless it's within our own business).
I currently subscribe to your channel and have watched all your videos so far. We're looking to buy an Akiya in the next 12 months and just getting tips on the process and looking into which area we'd like to buy in. We're in our 40's and would like to move over there and find a job, which is the hardest part due to the visa requirements and restrictions. I have a secure government job here in Australia but I'd rather be living somewhere nicer and less of a rip off.
Thanks so much for subscribing and watching! We'd be happy to answer any further questions you have. I probably should do a better video on our complete purchase process 🤔 Feel free to email us too :)
Are you thinking of teaching English or maybe something else?
I'm not the teaching type 😂. I'd be happy with a manual labour/physical/agricultural type job to be honest. I love the outdoors and doing actual work. My current job has no similar work in Japan. It's a specialist role. And the closest role to it doesn't employ foreigners. I'll email you if I have anymore questions if that's ok. Don't want to fill up the comment section 😂
the stupid naive foreigners never die out...
2:57 am I the only one that caught the fart?
Must be hearing things....? 😀😇
Amazing
Thank you so much!
Where are those website links?
In the video description :)
HI: what area is your akiya? thx
Masuda, Shimane :)
Well done. This looks great. People these days always do everything brand new whilst some simple tweaks like these can deliver results just as great at a much better budget
Thanks so much, we totally agree!
this house is just stunning! :)
Thank you!! 😊
wow, the kitchen looks amazing, great job :)
Can you introduce me to your agent? Did you buy it? Tnx…
See our playlist for the house we eventually purchased :) Drop us an email and I'll tell you who the agent for this townhouse was. Don't want to post her details publicly. Good luck with your search 😊
why no one is swimming
There's a designated swimming beach just down the road :)
In 1945 usa drop bomb in hiroshima.
Dont forget Nagasaki..... Have you been to Hiroshima city? It's beautiful. One of my favourite cities in Japan.
@@NekoAshiJapan bro is japan empire fall in 1945?
@Hell1960 Bye bye. That topic is not for discussion here.
Looks absolutely amazing
My issue is having to rely on Japanese people. Not because of language, but most things require a residence card. It's like Japanese people have to make 'a power of attorney' commitment to helping you, and difficult people to befriend. Things like getting a bank account. Very simple anywhere else.
If you have residency you can get a bank account. Don't need a friend to help you with that. Japanese people are incredibly helpful and friendly, especially when you take the time and make the effort to respect societal norms and cultural boundaries :) Even if you make mistakes with etiquette etc, if your intentions are good, you should be well received. Feel free to email us if you think we can help :)
looks amazing, thanks for the ideas
Thanks for your kind comment! We will make further improvements, but, for now, it's brighter and more inviting :) Do you have a kominka or old house you're restoring?
@@NekoAshiJapan Im in Ipswich Australia, I live in a small miners cottage, I do alittle bit of DIY for the moment in attempts to modernize the place moreso than restore. I am a huge fan of wooden accents and natural stone.
I love those colours and accents too!
If you could recommend prefectures/ regions that combines all the best things in Japan and is not too hectic but laid back, has natural beauty including rural and/or coastal, conveniences and culture and not in a natural disaster zone and has four seasons, what would they be? Thanks 🙏👍
Hello! Well, we love Shimane..... less seismic activity (touch wood, no where is 100% safe!), beautiful beaches, mountains, ski resorts close by, interesting edo era towns and a lot of interesting history. The people are amazing too, and very few foreigners where we are - which is a bonus! Easy access to most areas of Western Japan.
What a beautiful home! How much did you have to pay for it?
Thank you! 3.5M JPY but, naturally, we will need to spend at least the same again for repairs and upgrades, probably more. It is a slow and steady project for us :)
What beautiful surprises you found!! The house is so charming!
Thank you! 🤗
dude you guys live in heaven
Thank you! It is a beautiful part of Japan 😍
OMG, what beautiful ❤Japanese treasures❤ I love the Artwork, Scrolls and Pottery, the fans are stunning!
Thank you so much! There are a few more interesting items around the house. Scrolls, a samurai sword holder and other things. Will include in our next video! :)
Hi there, came across your channel when we 'spoke/commented' about giant hornets on Benton Homesteads video. Nice house you have there and so lucky to have all those interesting treasures inside ❤😊. Next time you come across a giant hornet just let them check you out and they'll be on their way and leave you in peace. Have you encountered the feared mukade yet ? Those things can be horrible, specially if you wake up to one crawling across your face 😱😭😇
Hello! Thanks for the suzumebachi advice :) there were so many things running through my head when I encountered him (is it the males or females that sting?) And I was wearing all black, which is a big 'no-no' as I believe they target dark colours?😂 As for mukade, we laid baits on our very first day at the house and found one dead and another almost dead when we returned. They scared me too! I ended up devising a mesh cover for the bathroom drain because I was terrified one would crawl up my leg while I was showering! Nightmare material.... we have also seen one in the garden, so they are still around. As you would know, this is life in the countryside of Japan! 🙃😄
@NekoAshiJapan All the Suzumebachi you'll likely see are females, you'd have to be very 'lucky' to see a male drone. As for mukade they aren't all bad as their main food source around the house is cockroaches 🤗 but they do have a painful sting. Luckily for us our cats 😻 like to eat them but it can be a but gross 😝 hearing them crunching them up. Japanese insects should be a breeze for you guys coming from Australia where just about every creature seems to have murder on its mind 🤣😆. We don't have salties or drop bears or seriously venomous spiders and most of our snakes aren't immediately fatal 😂😁.
Haha! So true about Aussie animals.... can't believe cats eat mukade!! We love cats 🐈 😻 🐈⬛️ ❤️
That hornet was scary!
I was shaking! It stared straight into my soul 😂
I’m with u run omg the was Hugh many blessings from North Texas ❤
Thank you! I couldn't get out of there fast enough, but was kind of shuffling in my house slippers!
Lovely house and location!! Congratulations! Have you decided on the location where you want to live first or you choose the nicest house first? I have trouble finding a nice 100 yrs old house on the area I want. Look forward to your next video!
Hello. We fell in love with the house first, then discovered how beautiful the area was :) we found the house on koryoya.com 🥰
Very happy to see you guys aren't just tossing stuff out. You call it treasure like I do 😂
We had very little to go through, unlike your place! But everything we did find was interesting :)
You really did not want to deal with that wasp!
It was HUGE!! I could see it's eyes from across the room... haha. And I was wearing all black, which is big mistake... they are attracted to dark colours!
Gorgeous coastline...was so excited to finally see a new vid from you two haha been waiting...sugoi ! Look forward to more soon tanoshimi desu :)
Thank you so much :)
Beautiful video! I built a home in central Japan in a rural village. Although my wife is Japanese, I have found the locals (mostly farmers) to be rather insular and shy. It's been 15 years now, and I enjoy the quiet, so it doesnt bother me. The PROS: living in nature, wonderful mountain views, cool mountain climate, no car horns, no sub-woofers, no all-night parties, no late fees, no parking tickets, no lawyers, and low taxes. The CONS: being the subject of local gossip, and only 10 colors of paint.
Hi and thanks for your comment! Your 'Cons' made me laugh! The paint thing is a real problem, haha 😄 and we completely agree with all of your 'Pros'. Our neighbours have been very friendly so far and we are trying our hardest to follow etiquette, be honest with our intentions and show that we're investing time and money into the house and community. Biggest hurdle right now is keeping the weeds under control in the front garden, as we are conscious that it can quickly become unsightly for the neighbours. Might need to increase the frequency with which we engage the local Silver Group for their gardening services :)
Interesting video. Thanks for sharing. Glad that UA-cam suggested this video to watch 😀👍
Thank you so much!
Very nice kitchen make over❤love it😊
Love it 🥰
