Close your Eyes ( you're almost there ) - a folk song by Colin Macduff
This song was written and performed in early 1990 by my brother Colin Macduff. It was recorded on a cassette recorder and transcribed acoustically, hence the audio quality. It describes Aberdeen oil workers on leave, taking the southbound train to Glasgow. For educational use only. Song © Colin N Macduff.
Lyrics
Close your Eyes
It’s Friday night, from Aberdeen the train is southbound
Dump the bags and crash the fags, open up those beers and get them mouth-bound
You’re washing out the granite from your soul
Two weeks to live again, two weeks to do a job you thole.
You’d rolled around the chopper’s belly and it shook you out at Dyce
The blades stayed on, the sea was gone, you thought about the bairnies once or twice
One week this city’s silver, but the next it’s grey,
In three hours you’ll be home again but there must be a better way.
Close your eyes, you’re almost there,
And open up your heart again - you’re free to care.
The cliffs fall down into a green sea washing round a fishing town
Across the Mearns a northern lightbulb flickers, gloaming’s coming down
You’re watching cows with numbers on their backs
Trees and fields and rivers, rabbits running from the tracks.
And it’s two more beers and you will spill the thoughts you hide
They’re thawing out the river in a man who’s frozen up inside
You count the cans and miles to Dundee
The rusting steel grey insects watch you from the sea.
Close your eyes, you’re almost there,
And open up your heart again - you’re free to care.
The salmon boats like fallen leaves are floating as the Tay tide turns
No darkening sky or net of stars can catch you on this home run
Wee Duncan opens up another can
“Nae problem, no danger, - Haw cheer up big man!”
For this money you’ve been chasing - now it’s running you around
Oil and gold are found and sold, still your dreams are buried underground
The big steel spiders caught you in its web
You’re pinned by moving up and down among its silver threads.
And it’s dark and dreich, you’re creeping into Glasgow in the rain
The old town wraps its warm coat around you and you smile again,
But wonder if you have the strength to turn around once more
Aye one day soon you’ll give it up and get that job onshore.
Close your eyes, you’re almost there,
And open up your heart again - you’re free to care.
Close your eyes, you’re almost there,
And open up your heart again - you’re free to care.

From the Blossom to the Dust, a folk song by Colin Macduff
Переглядів 1923 роки тому
My brother Colin has written and sung this song for me. For many years I have had a passion for family history and as part of that I have restored family gravestones and put stones on unmarked family graves. Having done some nice stones for the ancestors I thought it might be good to have one of my own. Also after a brush with melanoma in 2014 it focused my mind on the project. You can hear in ...

My brand new Winegard Sensar IV had loose components rattling around internal to the antenna head. Opened the hard way but found that the amplifier board and VHF coil and screws were not screwed in? Bad QA for sure. Your video gave me the information needed to secure the PC board and coil placement. Good stuff! Also good to hear another ham operator. Nice details. 73 and thank you, de WQ6N (once upon a time VK8QN).

I don't need to repair my Winegard antenna, but I might be upgrading it. I think that the RV manufacturer economized and did not buy the UHF electronics module. Now I have an understanding of the product. Good work fixing that shunt to the inductor! Thanks

You did not mention the original Johnstone High School next to the High Parish Kirk in the old photograph. Spent three years there 1953 to 56. Direct descendant of Alexander Russell, who sold the land that Duff House is built on to his cousin William Duff. His sister Eleanor Duff married into the "Green" family. The Red Greens were actually Lamonts. James Lamont was a survivor of the massacre of Dunoon that changed his surname to Green. His son William married Eleanor Duff and their son Robert Duff Green was one of the largest landholders in Colonial Virginia.

My antenna is from 1995. Would that essentially be a Winegard Sensar "1"? Would mine have a circuit card inside of it?

Yes I guess that would be a Winegard Sensar 1 with a unit internal to the caravan feeding 12volt DC up the RF coaxial cable to power the VHF/UHF circuit card inside which is likely to be very similar to the card in the video.

Hi Rod. Subscribed. Quite an achievement to design and successfully market such a great radio. I think there is still a market for a simple and affordable HF radio, be it for remote 4WDers, or aid agencies and the 3rd world. So I take it you sold Q-MAC to Barret, who have since been taken over by Motorola. Your radio definitely stands up there with Codan and Barret, maybe gives Sunair a bit to think on too?

Thanks for taking the time to walk through the design of this amazing radio, so often these insights from the designers are lost to time. I think the use of DTMF was an ingenious way to implement the user interface whilst simplifying the design at the same time. And by using simple standard components you were doing "design for manufacturabiliy" back before it was cool! Seeing the prototypes and how close to the concept model you were able to implement the final design is a real plus, and a good lesson to all engineers.

Hello Russell Not sure if you were editing the channels using DTMF mike or RS232 connection to computer. Normally if there is an error it would display E-203. If there are not too many channels on the radio you might try "zeroising" the radio by pressing CHAN UP and CLAR UP together for 6 seconds. This will delete the channels and it may fix the error. From what I read, they are a sept of Clan MacDuff. I also found Abernathys on both sides of my family and traced them back to Hugh, Orm and Gillemichael MacDuff, because the name changes from Abernathy to MacDuff, when you trace them back. My grandmothers family were very proud Duffs, coming to the US about 1825. We settled in Indiana Terr (currently North-West Virginia) and have a US line of doctors, lawyers, and corporate executives in our Duff line. The Duff uncle I was named after is remember today (Memorial Day) having 29 missions as B-17 tail gunner bombing the daylights out of Germany, so you might say the Duff line has paid back the bombing at least thirty-fold. Several generations of Duff women in the family are concert pianists and school/math teachers. Listening to my grandmother, Ive picked up the responsibility of carrying on with the Duff line, gathering US members together at Highland games under the Clan MacDuff Society of America - from WV to Florida. Can you PM me via messenger please ? Thank you for your time, work, and expense putting this great video together. I will put a link to it on our FB page for Deep South clan Macduff.

Hallo Satish. Great callsign. Tuner TM-90 is designed to work with 2.7 metre long whip antenna on jawan's back. It has 9:4 impedance transformer inside and a silver plated series tuning inductor which at one end has an iron powder slug fully engaged and at the other end enters a capacitive bridging sleeve. It runs along a 36 turn screw for excellent precision of tuning. No DC power is required for the tuner. It has two "direction" LEDs that show which way the control should be turned and a middle LED whose brightness is related to antenna current. The tuning control should start from fully clockwise. It is quicker initially to tune on RX noise as you will hear it peak on the tuned frequency as you rotate. Fine tuning can be then done on TX using the LEDs. It tunes a 2.7 metre whip from 3.5 MHz to 9 MHz. It has too much inductance to tune a wire antenna. The automatic TA-99 tuner has a wider range. Hope that helps. 73 Rod VK6MH GM4AWB
