Framing A DIY Wooden Truck Camper: Lightweight, Inexpensive, Simple & Strong!
This is a tutorial about framing and building your own lightweight wooden truck camper! This is a simple and effective camper build anyone can do, perfect for first-time builders. In this video, we'll talk through the design phase, what materials to use, how to build the frame, and how to finish it cleanly.
When it comes to building a DIY truck camper, there are endless ways to do go about it, but not all of them yield great results. To develop the best method for framing my homemade truck camper, I consulted with cabinet builders and contractors in the design phase and narrowed in on a few critical secrets to making the camper lightweight, super strong, and water tight, without spending a lot of money. In the end, I was able to build this homemade camper for under $1000. It's lighter than most fiberglass frames, has more space inside, and it's better looking, too!
Chapters:

0:35 Staying Light
1:29 Framing Material
2:47 Dimensions
4:08 Window Placement

Sketchy Rock Climbing With No Rope...First Ascent?

Something about deep water free soloing is ridiculously intriguing. It's the purest kind of rock climbing, so simple and fun when the setup is right. Standup paddleboarding around Lake Havasu, a climber can't help but get curious. The water is lined with cliffs and outcroppings full of fun-looking lines. From afar, a lot of them seem ripe for deep water soloing, although few are overhanging, th...
Washington's BEST Road Trip: The PNW Van Life With Peace Vans

Last month I took a road trip up Washington's Olympic Peninsula in a decked-out 2022 Mercedes Metris conversion van. I got to drive the cleanest conversion van build I've ever seen (thanks Peace Vans), eat gourmet BBQ and wine pairings (thanks Big Green Egg & Vindulge!), rock state-of-the-art overlanding gear (thanks Dometic), ride a Onewheel Pint on the beach, camp at gorgeous campsites, and h...

Surfing In Washington with the GoPro Hero 11 Black!

I went surfing in the PNW to put the GoPro Hero 11 Black to the test! Earlier this month I went surfing in Washington and set out on a week-long road trip up the PNW coast. I spent the week surfing some of Washington's hardest-to-reach waves, primitive camping, sniffing out surf, and testing the GoPro Hero 11 Black along the way. Ed note: PNW surfing isn't for everyone. Man-eating killer whales...
Awesome build and inspiration. I want to build something very similar for my Tacoma here in Alaska.
I love it. Glad you posted this video. I will do generally the same except I like to work with fiberglass and will cover exterior with 1/4” luan plywood and will fiberglass and gel coat it. But same basic principle. I love to build stuff. And in this case I’m going to do it myself because a BASIC purchased LEER cap for my 8’ bed truck is nearly $5 grand!! I can buy a LOT of material for $5 grand and it will end up being so much sweeter. Anyhow. Good job. You are definitely ready for Burning Man.
nice
Nice build.
Nice! A couple issues I see are: 1. No shitter 2. All wooden, so won't last long without coverings. 3. The roof is Flat! Never good for anything without slope and runoff. 4. Escape hatch. It doesn't have overhang bed, but only way out is thru the door! Would want an escape hatch out the top as typical.
Great build and thanks for sharing sir!
I give it a 10 based on rod and reel on the wall
Legit
He said bung...he he he. I am glad for the instruction but, I am pretty sure that the whole reason for this video was to say the word bung.
Great video. You mention in one video that you were going to do a supply list. Did I miss that or would you share where it is please? Thanks for this information!
I have a question; I'm building a pulled trailer camper. But... I wanted to ask if 2x4s are strong enough for a built camper trailer, when they are pulled at freeway speeds? Thanks.
I have same question
2x2 glued and screwed would work fine
@@emeraldfox7175 thanks for the reply.
I like your build! Thank you very much. The wood finish of the doors is very shiny and nice.
Good job 👍.
Nice job. I'm hoping to get a decent truck soon and then I can look at all my options. How much did the build cost?
Where have you been? I made a similar camper for my toyota tacoma. I got the idea from your videos. I hope you make more .
If my eye sight was better, I’d Love to build a camper for my 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab with a 6’ bed. I would use Cedar 2X2, and Oak or another hardwood for the frame around my door. Of course it would have to be insulated with solar panels on the roof.
6.8 million was the total cost, in case anyone wanted to watch this whole video to understand the cost and nothing was mentioned. I used nasa math (+/-) $3.50
Love this! Currently researching building a truck camper build of my own and this had great info! I am curious though, how did you weatherproof it?
Enjoyed your video, thanks for posting 👍
Might do this to my lowered Toyota truck. My trailer got stolen and wrecked.
Hi Mike. Alfred here. Just wanted you to know that I like the job you did. Excellent job. Your camper build inspired me to build one of my own. So I did. I built a wood frame with 2" foam insulation, put 1/2-inch plywood on the outside and then I wrapped the entire thing with aluminum. I drive 2006 Toyota Tacoma crew cab 6ft box. If you care to see let me know. Love the name you picked for it 'Maxi pad'.
So many great points to help me out. Thank you.
The maxi pad 😂😂😂 good one
Thank you for this awesome video brother you got a new subscriber! 2 questions, how much would you say material and all cost, other question does it way down on your tank, taking up fuel quicker?
The" Maxie pad" that's funny. Great job ! Nice truck cap.
Poplar wood is considered a hardwood
Do you have a build thread online or more pictures of your design drawings?
I like the port holes. When the weather is bad you can 'batten down the hatches'. ;-) I dream about builds. It's a good past-time! I need to save up for a van and many years of travel with a decent rig, but I've look at full size vans but recently at the small vans or what some call micro-van. I think I can make it work. One thing is how to store propane for a van, and many RVs and such have a compartment that is sealed from interior but with a door, and vents on the door, to the outside. If I plan on using propane quite a bit for years then it would pay in the long run to do propane storage the safest way.
Man I hate those flim flam nay sayers.
It's really nice, Mike! ❤-Renee K. Taylor, Kamloops, BC, Canada (Apr. 6/24.)
(Non-urgent re: Food for thought.)(Attention: Mike.) Dear sir: Hello! How are you today? Thank you for putting this video together! I enjoyed it. In addition, I'm not a Builder, live in British Columbia, Canada, and have a "Custom U-Build Truck Camperette-" concept I'd like to do. If possible, I'd like my (very squat, fully-enclosed, Sleeping-Compartment only-) Camperette to resemble your Camper somewhat, but instead to have a Log-Cabin's (Cedar,) "One-Half Round Log" and "D-Log Shell-" construction (at least on the two sides, to cut down on a Log-Cabin's typical heaviness,) be able to get in under a typical (sliding-open, 7-feet high) Garage-Door Opening at a house (when it's within a Truck-Bed and without striking the Garage-Door,) be removable, and have House- and RV Adaptable/Convertible Electrical-Powering (so it's versatile as to where it can draw power from, such as from inside a Garage at someone's house (120V, 60Hz (CAN),) or from a Powering-Station at a Campground or RV-Park, in BC.) To flesh out: As far as I know, in BC, as long as a (powered?) structure is less than: 10-feet long x 10-feet wide x (?) feet high, then its Owner doesn't need a permit for parking the structure anywhere in the province. (I believe that if I've got my Camperette, while it's within a Truck-Bed, inside a (heated and rented?) Garage at someone's house, then people can't complain, mostly because it's concealed (?)) Incidentally, my understanding about Log-Cabins (on property) is that, despite their evident drawbacks of being vulnerable to thieves if isolated out in the woods, having a relatively shorter life-expectancy compared to other kinds of homes, and needing constant upkeep and weather-proofing, they can't be beat when it comes to having (negligible) Moisture- and Heat Loss-issues, no matter what time of year it is. (I sure hope I've got that right! :) Finally, it seems one should treat a home, which has Wooden Exterior-Cladding, with (expensive) Natural Cedar-Oil Finish, whenever possible. (At least I don't want to put in Water-Lines (Plumbing, Sewage,) where most of the problems come from, or additional sources of Powering! Yay!) Please keep in touch, anyone, and I hope this treatise can be helpful to others! 🤩-Renee K. Taylor, Kamloops, BC, Canada (ameardx@yahoo.ca)(Apr. 5/24.)
Solid vid man seriously well done ✅
What the hell is 3/5ths plywood?
So I'm basically trying to build something VERY similar but on a bigger truck. I wanted to sleep E-W and was thinking with my current width across my rails being 72" I could use 2x6 for bottom peace along the rails and set 2x2 on the outside so I keep the interior space?? Would this work you think?
Prety col camper. I would like to kwow what type of varnish or paint did you use, Thank you
Bruh! Popular is not a hardwood!!😂 and he had the mask crew helping him 😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂 Heavy use of double entondra's, huh??
how is it attached to the truck thanks
Thank you Sir
Nice work!
The Max E Pad. That's awesome! Nice job!
Great vid and great information
Thank you for filming this project- I am going to Alaska and considering building my own camper- haven’t much experience in carpentry, hopefully it will turn out ok
Note to the wise, Your truck Will eventually crack if you don't have proper support, Need to transfer the weight To the bottom floor of the bed.
Awesome, great built.
Why not use 2x2 cedar? Lightweight and bug resistant. Otherwise love your build. Would diagonal supports increase strength?
Dude you rule. Pure genius
Lol far from it he used a very soft non durable wood
I was down with everything until the bungs! using thin plywood, drilling the screws deeper lessons the structural integrity if the connections! Terrible idea for some aesthetic bullshit
Nice build. Great tips. Just subd.
Love this framing guide. I wanted the build one of my own and kept thinking I needed to use something like aluminum tubing and channel for weight reasons, because I knew typical 2x4 pine would be too heavy for my purposes. I'm not a carpenter, so the though of using a 2x2 hardwood as the basis of framing hadn't even crossed my mind.
