Wing Pattern: Acrylic Paper Marbling
Purchase one-of-a-kind, hand marbled art and paper here! www.etsy.com/shop/CampbellMarbling
When I started marbling I had trouble finding videos showing Western style paper marbling with combs, so I published mine, assuming other people familiar with marbling might be interested.
These are not intended to be tutorial videos, but since so many people have asked, I’ll explain the process a little here: The bath is a mixture of carrageenan and water (2-3TBS/gallon). The paints are acrylic, thinned with water till they’re a milky consistency. (If done correctly the paints will float and spread on the surface of the bath rather than sink to the bottom.) Once enough paint has been added so that the surface of the bath is saturated the patterns are created by pulling combs of various sizes through in different order or direction, depending on the pattern. The paper is pre-treated with a mixture of alum (1 cup desolved in a gallon of water) which works as a mordant so the paint will stick to the paper. The alum treated side of the paper is laid over the paint and lifts it off the bath when it is removed. Once the paper has dried it’s ready to use!

    • @rachelcampbell6147
      @rachelcampbell6147 5 днів тому

      No, I just use acrylic paint. Some of the more traditional patterns like tiger eye and stormont require other chemicals, and don’t necessarily work well with acrylic paint. I focus just on combed patterns.

    • @rachelcampbell6147
      @rachelcampbell6147 8 днів тому

      I don’t use ox gall. I just dilute acrylic paint with distilled water, that’s all. Not all acrylic paint works, you have to kind of hunt around for what works. I use Utrecht, lots of their colors work excellently.

    I can't quite tell, for the first colour are you placing each drop inside the last similar to the two outside rows?

    • @rachelcampbell6147
      @rachelcampbell6147 14 днів тому

      Yes, for the first base layer it’s important for each drop to be inside the previous. Otherwise you end up with breaks in the final pattern where the colors never quite meet. For the first row up the middle I’m waiting for each drop to spread a little before I place the next one inside it. The two outside rows I can place more quickly since the first row has already spread out.

      You can mute the sound on a video, you know. Feel free to do so if you don’t like the music. There’s no other audio on the video so you won’t be missing anything. 🙂

      Popping little bubbles or pushing any thing that might be floating on top under the surface so it doesn’t mess up the pattern.

    Hi Rachael just wondering what is the best paper to use?

    • @rachelcampbell6147
      @rachelcampbell6147 Місяць тому

      I really loved using Texoprint, it was perfect for marbling! But it looks like they've stopped making it. Now I'm using Munising 30-pound paper that I get from marbleart.us . It's a little thicker than Texoprint, but it works just as well for marbling. I use Hahnemuhle Ingres too, and even mohawk text-weight paper when it's all I've had on hand. Really, just about any paper will work. But Munising (and Texoprint) is the best because it doesn't expend and cockle like other papers and you don't have to worry about it tearing when it's wet. I hang my papers to dry and sometimes the corners will rip off of the other paper if I forget to be careful! I'm so used to Munising which I've never had tear even when completely wet. Ideal for marbling! Highly recommend it.

    This is soooo beautiful! I really wasn't expecting that kinda pattern to evolve at 3.22! .. :) .. Will it be possible for you to share the link to the carrageenan you use? Or maybe the brand name? Where I live, carrageenan is really expensive and I see a few variants. Don't want to lose money by buying the wrong one. That's why I asked. Thank you. :)

    • @rachelcampbell6147
      @rachelcampbell6147 2 місяці тому

      I’ve only gotten carrageenan from places selling it specifically for marbling, so I don’t know if there are significantly different varieties and if some wouldn’t work for marbling. I’ve gotten it from marbleart.us and talasonline.com. I think it’s around $50 for a pound. But that can last a while, depending on how often you’re marbling. I use 2-3 tablespoons per gallon I usually make up about 4 gallons to use in my tray for 2-3 days.

  • @mortranvids

    So pretty. May I ask, what are you achieving with the strips of newspaper on the sides? Is making the paint more even on the edges? Thank you.

    • @rachelcampbell6147
      @rachelcampbell6147 2 місяці тому

      I’m pulling the paint all the way to the edge of the tray and sort of sticking it to the sides. So the entire bath is covered with a solid layer of paint. If there is any bath that is not covered at the edges it will get pulled into the pattern by the combs and leave gaps in the pattern.
