My channel is here to help people catch more fish anyway possible. I am a largemouth and smallmouth bass guide on Smith Mountain Lake in southwest Virginia. Check out www.smithmountainlakefishing.com.
It's not just fishing sponsors out there! Check out who supported me for the 2024 guiding season!!!!
Hey guys,
Always a lot of talk around sponsorship when it comes to fishing, but a lot of people forget that there are other companies that can be marketed and super needed around the fishing community. This year I had the pleasure of working with some great organizations revolving around my real estate business and wanted to share some info on them if you have a need. I pride myself on working with good people with solid work ethic and morals so these guys all hit those marks. If you have any questions or need to get in touch with any of them shoot me a message or follow their links below.

Snow Day 2.0 on Smith Mountain Lake. I caught a giant bass!!!!

Anytime snow is in the forecast I watch it closely to find time to get out in the elements. Big fish just bite when its cold and snowy. Just like last years video of a good fish right after a snow storm, I was about to put a giant largemouth in the boat as it was coming down. Always be safe when you plan to come out during a storm but if you can its well worth the hassle! RODS USED: Dobyns Cham...

Lake El Salto Fishing Trip - "Maybe, Maybe not"

Mark and I booked a trip to Lake El Salto in December to catch some good numbers and giants. The lake was fishing great for daily catches but we only managed to crack one over 8lbs. Out guide Peto was amazing and the dude put us around tons. Left the trip with a new saying when we would ask Peto to try a different spot and if he thought it would be good with out fail his response was "maybe.......

Not sure how old this video is. I have a z521 with a etec 250. I can get 73 out of it. Lower unit went out. I’m debating to just put a new Suzuki on it. How fast did you ever get yours up to? After break in
Hey James. I’ve got 72 in colder months. Normally getting 65-67.
@ thanks for the info!
Billy going up this weekend I live on Kerr , plan to fish blackwater is the November fatten up going on full swing back of coves and creeks ??
It’s hit or miss man. It’s not every back pocket I’d say like 30% are all the way back but still tons of fish hanging back off shore. Water temps still close to 70 again 👎🏻
@ thanks for the tips !
@ you were right they were scattered caught some in the s curves of blackwater shallow on the ledge , then ended up in main lake pockets and deep ditches biggest one in main lake on rip rap
New to SML lake. Been fishing FL lakes for past 15 years and trying to remember how to fish highland reservoirs. Seems like rain every day since moving here. Then Helene and lights out for 10 hrs. My question What’s the best place to start north of bridge or south. East sides or west sides? Everything looks so fishy. Some areas smell fishy. Remembering from when I used to break down a HR lake, channel swings, main lake, secondary points, back in coves and seasonal transition. Fall and spring similar transition same for winter and summer. I guess I should have listened to your pod cast first. Thanks for answering all my questions.
Hey yale, it's typical Highland Res stuff with the upper areas of the lake acting a lot more like a river. SML fish move ALOT so I wouldn't say there is a area that is amazing 12 months out of the year. Bass should be moving shallow for the next few months so focus back in creek arms half way back and more with a topwater to locate some fish and then slow it down when its tough in those same areas. Tight Lines.
@@billy_kohlsfishing Thanks again Billy. Tried yesterday and went to Park Place and tried at the back of creek and started working my way out to main lake. Most activity on my scope and surface was 1/3 of way out to main lake point. No bites. Try again today North of Bridge. Striper guide got stripers and LM 20’ live bait. So there are fish here. 😂
Chatterbait question for SML ……. is that something that you catch bass on consistently on SML. For the life of me, I cannot get them to work here. I keep seeing videos of how great they are on UA-cam but I just don’t have any success with them.
@@kevinaltice2911 hey Kevin, yes it works in the fall. I’ll use it around the same rocks I crank just have it tick the rocks. I throw green pumpkin a lot
@@billy_kohlsfishing thank you
Good stuff. Talked me out of pulling the boat out of sml and going to Buggs.😂 The big bass tournament is fun for about an hour. Then all the boats everywhere ruins it. Thanks guys. Great stuff and the hour went by too fast.
I know I’m late to the party on this video, but I’m glad I found it. I just blew up my 2008 250 HO (for the 2nd time) and I am thinking about repowering with a Suzuki. I would be on a 2008 Ranger 620, but appreciated the performance thoughts/details.
Happy to help
The problem with Smith mountain lake and big tournaments, it's a party lake. Early 2000's they had a big tournament. Pros two main complaints. One Hotel and accomodations staying for the tournament and two it's a party lake. Seafood, wake boats, bar hoppers, stripper fishermen. There is so much boating activity. Makes it tough through the summer months. Late winter/ early spring or October would be prime for the big tournaments.
Yea man it's a crazy busy lake and the low accommodation doesn't help. I guess we will see how MLF likes it in 2025.
Why does dobyns list their 1 power rods as their Dropshot rods yet almost everyone with a dedicated dropshot setup from dobyns uses a 2 power?
Hey Katie, I think it comes down to personal preference. I do use a 721 rod for my dropshot stuff when I’m using an open hook style bait. I just use the 702 more since I dropshot in brush so much. I think you’d be happy with either or both 😁
Some of the best bass fishing of my life. PB 13.86. Walk out the back of the house and jump in the boat and start catching. Yale Lake
Sounds awesome
Algo bien 🤙🏻. Caught 35 good ones at Barrett a couple Wednesdays ago . Look beautiful out there
Hell yea 🤘🏻
I own a Yamaha and love it, but I would not hesitate 1 second to buy and own a Suzuki. They are absolutely great motors. When I am in the gulf for winter ALL of the guys who go out every day, for a LIVING, are running Suzuki. I think that says a lot.
Great dog! I had a Boarder Collie and a Kelpie😊 on the farm when I worked in Australia. The Kelpie was high energy but both were very smart and obedient. Great for the cattle and sheep. Ok let’s get back to fishing.
Yea we have amazing pups I won’t buy another breed
@@billy_kohlsfishingwhat rod do you recommend for jig fishing
Hi Billy, never have fished SML and you mentioned blue backs becoming main forage on the podcast. I do custom lure painting and would like to ask you if you could send me a photo of the bluebacks that are in SML. I tried emailing you yesterday but I’ve didn’t receive a response. Thanks in advance Dave O
Hey Dave I’ll respond to your email with some info.
Lets put thAt bad boy on my 2008 champion 210 white please
Would be a sick combo 🤘🏻
Very low profile
Its been a great motor
were coming back billy
👍
I just wannna know where that boat lunch is SML is home for me I’ve only fished the Roanoke river side 😂
Lots of ramps around. Parkway Marina, Start Park, Scruggs Rd, Anthony Ford, Penhook, Oak Grove and Magnums. Google those names and you'll get the addresses quick! Tight Lines.
thanks for the tips for SML! Im here all week and marking fish in the 20 ft depth range. They drew the water down two feet during this fourth of July week for some reason... Ive not been hooking any bass on the drop shot creature baits, will switch up to the jig. Im getting smoked by big panfish everywhere I go, which is fun but would love some bass!
Hey paddle, thanks for watching. There is still a top water bite as well. Throwing little walking baits. Make sure you’re Fishing The drop shot super slow.
My rangers fixing to get hers
It’s been an amazing motor
one of the baits you showed made me say.... SHIT! Billy giving away the goods here folks.
Always helping man! Hope it puts more in the boat.
Always dropping knowledge Billy 👊🏼 missed out at the end of the year…can’t wait to book another trip
Sounds good thanks for watching
thanks! I have a 20 year old nitro but needs a new motor. I'm tired of bringing my boat into the shop more often then me being able to fish without any issues. I'm definitely ordering one
Right on! It’s been a killer motor
If you don't mind can you give an idea how deep does the boat need to be 20 to 25 feet???
Shad will spawn on the rocky banks and blue backs will spawn off the end of longer points in like 10-18 feet
Any suggestions on depth?
@@jodyhughes12360-4 feet on the rocks, 10-15 on the flats
Thanks man. Have a tournament there this weekend. Hope to do really good. I would like to book a guide trip with you sometime. Can you give me some rates? Thanks again
@@jodyhughes1236 good luck! $400 half day and $550 for full day
I probably missed it, but can you tell me where you stayed? Looks like great accommodations, guides, etc..
Anglers inn. They were amazing to work with.
@@billy_kohlsfishing Thank you. This has. been on my "bass bucket list" for years. I'm going to do it!!!
Great video as always bro!
Thanks bud SIMMS life 🤪
Surprised we didn’t break 8 this year. I’ve caught a ton of 2-3 lb males the last few weeks but can’t find the fat girls. Thanks!
Yea a LOT of the bigger fish are just being night eaters right now as well. That 10pm-2am window is on fire.
BILLY is the man..Good vid!! Can't wait to get bck down there
Thanks brother!
Swim jigs don't work on Norman, our fish won't eat em....
Yea I know swimjigs never work. I just like the way they look in the water :)
I was up blackwater and it was so many shad around the bank for a 1/4 of a mile. Never seen one bass bust on them and never caught a fish. Too many shad this year, fish don't even have to chase.
Yea man its a lot of shad. I like finding areas with a little shad not overloaded.
What country is this? El Salvador?
Mexico. Flying into Mazatlan.
Good video man, nice boat.
Thanks man!
Thanks 👍
Do you feel this recent cold spell and wind hurt the hatch from fish that already spawned on SML?
Yea I think it could and we have some chilly temps coming. Not sure we got a massive wave of fish that spawned but they are super close to doing the deed.
Looks like it’s sits a little low in the water I’d def raise jackplate
Yea man run it about 4” now most the time.
So glad I stumbled upon your IG and UA-cam page. I have been trying to fish smith mountain for years with limited success, this is probably due to me only fishing from docks. What would you recommend for throwing from docks?
A little Swimbait like a megabass spark shad on a 3/8oz head is a good choice so you can sling it far off the dock.
All great baits. I'm super pumped for this early pre-spawn for nearly all major lakes in the lower 50. Just need the dang N. Texas wind / storms to chill out. Can't wait to get back on the water
It's going to be a fun spring for sure!
Good stuff, man! So much to learn in freshwater fishing, since I've done mostly inshore saltwater wade-fishing in FL. I had the most success there using lures like the Mirrolure Catch-5, jigs with swimbaits, and Carolina rigs with live Alewives. I moved to VA last year, and am learning kayak fishing for bass/multi-species now. I know you mainly fish Smith Mountain Lake, but I was wondering, do you have any tips for Philpott lake? Also, if you had to bring only maybe 2 rods, limited tackle, and were in a kayak, what types of baits would you most likely try for spring bass fishing? Would you first try the north, middle or south side of the lake this time of year?
Hey man. Yea I have fished Philpott a good amount of times at this point. I would have a shaky head on for dropping on the rock walls and I would have a spinnerbait on for getting into the dirty water. I would focus up the river to start around laydowns.
Awesome! Thanks so much man! Hopefully I can get out there soon, and catch some good ones!
where are you placing the nail weights on the Mag Draft ???
I do them right in the side fin before the hook. Sometimes I’ll do one there and one near the nose if I want a more vertical fall.
Great video! Appreciate the time you took to give us some valuable tips.
Glad it was helpful!
Gotta love the magdraft! And the dropshot is such a staple! Great video 👍
Couldn't agree more! Both catch giants 👍🏻
Amen there brother
Thank you sir
Sure thing
I've always been a finnese guy, but like throwing a chatter bait, swimbait, crank too...but I always just seem to pick up a shakey head or Dropshot 85% of the time. Great vid 🎣
Thanks for watching man. Time and place for everything
Found them toward the back of docks today.
Yea it’s game time 🤘🏻
Do you how many hours you had on that Evinrude?
I think it only had around 409-500
How do you like the extasy rods compared to the extremes?
Champion to xtasy is a big jump but the extremes are pretty close. That 722 is a damn good spinning rod 🤘🏻
When’s the march top 5 video dropping 👊🏻
Plan to have it out by Monday
@@billy_kohlsfishing looking forward to it brother
Just awesome! sorry I missed it live. Thanks for doing what you do.
