The Heroine’s Journey of Collaboration - A Hero’s Journey Critique || Video Essay by The Lazy Stoic
In this video essay, we delve into the captivating narrative of the Heroine's Journey as outlined by Gail Carriger in her book, "The Heroine's Journey." Carriger's work critiques the overuse of the Hero's Journey not only in myths but also in modern storytelling, offering a compelling alternative narrative arc. Building upon psychologist Ernest Becker's call for non-destructive myths, Carriger explores myths driven by companionship, community, and constructive societal advancement.
Beginning with an examination of Demeter's myth from ancient Greece, Carriger illustrates the key stages of the Heroine's Journey, contrasting it with Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. Through examples from diverse modern works like "Finding Nemo," "Thor: Love and Thunder," and "Harry Potter," we analyze how these narratives embody the essence of the Heroine's Journey, emphasizing empathy, cooperation, and compromise over violence and conquest.
As we explore the significance of gendered protagonists and narratives, Carriger's insights challenge conventional notions of masculinity and femininity, highlighting the universality of the Heroine's Journey across cultures and time periods. By showcasing how contemporary films like "Avatar" and "Avengers: Endgame" incorporate elements of the Heroine's Journey, we witness the evolving landscape of storytelling toward non-destructive myths.
Join us on a journey of discovery as we celebrate the power of companionship, community, and cooperation in storytelling. “The line between good and evil runs through the heart of man”…… Solzhenitsyn. I am taken by the warrior philosopher you have become- were you this before you went to war or did it awaken it within you…….. i loved this movie- directors cut- but i also loved your exegesis- very thoughtful….. where i would suggest you take a deeper look is in the motivations of the zealots on both sides….. we see the motivations and the character developments/politics of Christendom…. We see none of it from the opposing forces….. there are brief conversations with Saladin about the politics of war- and there is a singular character that is featured on 3 occasions…. The “god wills it” character of Saladin……. But the portrayal of them is severely out of balance to be considered a bit of noise in the wind…. Whereas in the Christendom characters, it is a main driving force…. The stepping around the cross, the picking up of the crucifix ……. These things are throughout- to civilize the Saladin cause….. i would ask “if that was an accurate depiction of the civility of Saladin- why build a mosque on the ruins of the church ???? - why walk around the cross in a private moment- and in the public face- the the thing that will result in Richard the LionHeart returning for a 3rd go at it?? The truth is probably more along the lines of a politically correct Hollywood attempt to civilize the barbarism of one group which in turn amplifies the barbarism of the other (a bit of self loathing perhaps)………. “ i am not those men”…….. pluralism is a hallmark of almost all Christian societies….. but not those of Saladin, his beliefs and the subsequent lineage of the hordes…

    These are not just words i write that dont carry heavy meaning, at least from my perspective. When i read others write comments like this, it struggles to move me. Maybe I've grown up believing so many people in this world like to talk, but they're not really saying anything, even if they found bliss, i don't believe them, maybe because i've been without bliss for so long. One year ago i was terrified to my very core, one year ago i decided to go down a path of new self discovery and learning, breaking apart everything i thought i knew. I cant begin to describe how wonderful i feel for getting my life together, finding my path to becoming a man, and standing up for myself in life. I've been lost my whole life, letting fear drive me alot of the time, but now i feel like I can smell paradise and sweet bliss, the same ecstacy i felt as a child when i felt unafraid and ready to explore life. I am finally free, im finally free to be who i am supposed to be. Thank you Jordan peterson, Robert bly, friends, family, loved ones, and you Minimum Effort Media.

    Hello friend I appreciate a lot someone talking about the Heroine's Journey and I loved the way you explained it. However, with all due respect, I disagree with all the examples being male-centric narratives, mostly because the way I see it the Heroine's Journey is marked by a loss and disenfranchisement that comes from a flawed system that she must change and the type of disenfranchisement present for women is different than for men simply by their nature. As well, I somewhat disagree with Harry Potter and Thor since they do use violence and they do not have the same type of rejection a woman might have.... Anyways, thank you so much for talking about this

    • @MinimumEffortMedia
      @MinimumEffortMedia 3 місяці тому

      Hi Friend, I didn’t know we were so close. I do completely understand your reading that a Heroine is naturally wronged by an unjust patriarchal system. And I agree those are aspects of the OG goddess mythologies. I don’t agree that they set out to change the system, I’m not sure I can think of a goddess myth that accomplishes that. They most center on getting back what is there’s or are just continuing to be oppressed by the system. But remember, I’m exclusively talking about the narrative being gendered not the character. Every point I make about Harry Potter comes from Carriger’s book that is not my own example. You can reach out to her, she’s very responsive. Thor and Nemo are my own examples. Thor and Harry may use violence but they do not exclusively use violence and violence is means by which the obtain their boon. Now perhaps that introduces a sliding scale or “spectrum” of gendered narratives some leaning more masculine and some more feminine and there’s arguments for and against any narrative because they are all open to interpretation. But thank so much for this comment. I am over the moon to see someone engaging with something I created this thoughtfully. Perhaps there is a greater thesis to pull out of this conversation. I don’t quite see it yet but this is a start…. Of a wonderful friendship. 💙

    I really liked the part where you spoke about conquering the warrior, I came into the corporate tech world after a somewhat storied career in the military. And I really struggled at first, my performance was great, but promotions seemed to pass me by, it wasn't until my boss at the time, and a dear friend all these decades later sat down and explained that my team is "Afraid of me" that I was able to sort of, re examine why, who I was and make some of the necessary changes to my demeanor, eventually leading to an accomplished career, and what I consider the most valuable part of it, the fact that many of my peers and people that reported to me still check in with me and ask me for advice.
