    As a lifelong Outer Banker, Nags Head NC , and a sailor . I can tell ya it's way better to go inside down to Cape Fear and go out there . I've seen way too many beached boats along this part of NC. We sail a Cape Dory 36 , we've gone outa Cape Fear and straight into Nassau or Tortola and also into Fernandina on other trips. Then on to Lauderdale and wait for a weather window to cross . Avoid Hatteras at all costs in Sailboats and especially when it's cold.

    Crazy that they just gave you 6 months no questions. On reading the cruising groups it has been way blown out of proportion that it is now impossible to get that. I once stayed a week in a house on Lubbers Quarters Cay and rented a 20ft center console exploring all around there. What kind of boat is Lohan?

      Lohan is a Morgan 41 Out Island Classic. We also heard that they were only issuing 1 month at a time depending on where you checked in. Marsh Harbor seems to have it together as far as check in.

      We actually sailed south for a while until the winds died down. We were between Jacksonville and Palm coast when we turned to cross. It was about 40 miles across. We had 1 to 3 knots of current depending on where we were in the stream. We tracked well and had a pleasant crossing.

    After our Caribbean Circle, we put a CPT a/p aboard WHOOSH before leaving for Europe. Helm mounted a/p's always seem to be a compromise. Our Pearson 424 ketch had a sheltered (but not enclosed) cockpit and we had two failures. The motor enclosure needed replacement first, and in year 2 of our northern European travels the 'smart box' failed. Hope your's holds up better.

    Subscribed! I've been working on my 1969 Cal 34 for about 2 years now in hopes of doing this exact journey! Im up the James near Richmond. Another 2 years probably before I'll be ready, but super excited to watch your adventure!

    • @anniehubbard5315
      @anniehubbard5315 15 днів тому

      I'm outside of Richmond, the boat I'm looking at draft is 9 feet 8 inches, how far up the James can I get to moor it? I know it's a dumb question....

    • @chasingbluedreams
      @chasingbluedreams 13 днів тому

      @@anniehubbard5315 sorry, i thought i replied the other day, lol. you could take that boat all the way up the James to Richmond if you stay in the channel, but finding a slip to accommodate that draft will be difficult upriver from Norfolk. My boat draws 5 feet and at low tide I sit in the mud a little and cant leave my slip. I cant get in and out of my marina unless the tide is at least half way up. Once in the river, no problem though, I just time my day trips accordingly.

    • @anniehubbard5315
      @anniehubbard5315 13 днів тому

      @chasingbluedreams thank you soooooo much for your reply! I kinda knew what your answer would be in regards to finding a slip. Only problem with big boats is finding slips that aren't a long drive from home.
