CD-ROM to Art! (Part 1) - Intaglio Printmaking - AND Scratch Art 🙌
This process is meant for dry point intaglio printmaking using a CD-ROM (CD, DVD) but should work on other shiny scratchable material. --AND!!! This process may ALSO be used to create scratch art that will not be printed!!!
The dilemma you face with a super shiny surface is being able to see what you are doing. To solve this we will paint the surface before scratching. See the following suggestions for paint choices according to the method you desire to use:
⭐️FOR DRY POINT INTAGLIO PRINTMAKING:
You MUST use washable paint (such as tempera paint) if you desire to print the disc or reveal the shiny surface. ***If you accidentally use a paint such as acrylic which does NOT wash off, you can try a cleaner such as L.A. Awesome or isopropyl alcohol and it may work to remove the paint.
⭐️FOR SCRATCH ART:
- Use TEMPERA paint if you want to reveal the shiny surface.
- Use ACRYLIC paint if you would like to keep the surface painted and the scratches SHINY
Suggested Supplies: (NOT sponsored links!)
*Scratch tool (I bought these as a class set, but any scratch tool should work): www.amazon.com/Tatuo-Pieces-Scratch-Scraper-Painting/dp/B07P94Q477
*Tempera paint - in color of your choice - we found that dark colors work best
*Soft pastels (chalk pastels) - a color you can see on the paint - *will stick better to the tempera paint than to acrylic paint
*Gloves - to protect hands
*Water - to wash brush, wash off paint from CD-Rom
*Paint brush
*Pencil, normal, mechanical, or colored - all work
*Scrap paper - 2-3 pieces
*Tape - masking tape or other removable tape

With matte varnish , coffee stained paper paper towels become beautiful paper for ink drawings! Paper towel dyed with coffee and metal and dried beforehand… (FYI, this is for drawing with INK!!! To draw over paper towels with media such as charcoal, no varnish required!) I have tried several types of matte acrylic varnish and this has been my favorite so far. Test Run of My Mutt Stitch... and the verdict is???
This is so so cool!!
So glad you liked it! Thank you!
That's such a cute idea
Had to try it lol! Thank you!
Where can I find how you dyed paper bags to look like wood?❤
I actually didn’t not film that part originally for UA-cam but Instagram and can’t find the footage… but I will make one! It’s actually very easy. You add a little coffee to a pan and toss in some metal that will rust. Open up a paper bag and sit it right in the bottom of the pan on whatever side you want. The liquid “crawls” up the side. You’ll need to leave it a few days. It will get really dark the more metal you add. (Nails work amazing) I leave or check and turn if needed. That’s it. Super easy. You can’t control the results so it’s a surprise 😄
I ❤ Suminagashi. Its so easy and spontaneous. Love the idea of using a spaghetti noodle for the soapy water.
Me, too! Lol! I totally forgot I did that 😂 Pretty sure it was because my youngest spilt a box of dried spaghetti and I felt so guilty tossing them so bagged them up for “art purposes” 🙌😂
They turned out beautiful ❤❤❤
Thank you!
WOAH
Printmaking is magic 😄
What a happy soul ❤
I try ☺️
❤
😄🙌
Unrelated but I live for your choice of music- this is one of my favorite songs-
🙌 Mine, too! 😄
I love this! It's natural, definitely less wasteful or harmful than plastic. But I thought shells were porous. Do you have to seal it with lacquer or something?
I just used as is and it did totally fine. This is acrylic paint and I’ve also used gouache on it as well 😄 Have not tried watercolor but I use an old teacup and saucer for that… flea market find. The older I get the more I really enjoy the process so I have all kinds of doo dads for fun paint palettes depending on what media I use. So much more fun!
@@artwithchristine Absolutely agree! It goes to show that you don't really need all the fancy expensive stuff to paint. Artists are very resourceful people!
Well said! 🙌
This whole video was so therapeutic , thank you
So very glad you enjoyed it! Be blessed!
I have never seen this done before. Great first attempt. At least it still made you smile and laugh with happiness 👏❤️
Thank you! Oh of course! I have to laugh and enjoy the journey or why make stuff? Used to be so perfectionistic and it’s been way more successful now that I let go and just go for it 🙌
That's badass!
Thank you! My kids say I draw too many eyeballs 😂
Horrifying, give me 50
Had to sell a huge one I drew on our living room wall because it scared my kids 😳
this is so cool!! it looks like a full page spread from a manga or something… i love doodle art without sketches n stuff its very relaxing
Me, too! It’s my art therapy! So easy to get lost in the process 🙌 Thank you!
Wow!!!! The depth effect is super interesting, also I’d love to just stare at this piece for a long while!!!!
Thank you so much! I zone out and the process of drawing takes over. It’s my happy place 😄
❤❤❤
Thank you for the encouragement! 😄
❤❤❤
Thank you for always cheering me on!
BEAUTIFUL!!!
Thank you so much! ☺️
Such a lovely and beautiful gift!
Thank you! Given to a history buff who loves to draw 😄
Gorgeous work! Your nephew is very lucky ❤
Thank you so much! He is really into history, maps, and drawing 😄
Stained with metal and coffee? Very cool! ❤❤
Technically it’s rust FROM metal lol! Reaction coffee has with it is amazing! 😄
❤
Thanks! ☺️
Awesome
Thank you! It was hard to give away! Lol!
🤗 Who would have thought! A CD Rom disk now a unique art piece, not only for visual enjoyment but for practical use. The process is so satisfying too. It looks as if your designs are embossed or etched and the silvery disk adds to the effect. Your art classes must be exciting and inspiring for your students! Thank you for sharing. Happy, fulfilling days to you. Jay ,🦜 your days look very good with a comfortable lap and plenty of snacks available! 😅
You are right! The designs are scratched in! You can feel it when running your fingers across the surface- that’s what will catch the ink for printing 😄. Some students think the classes are -lol!
Jay would be with me 24/7 if he could 😂
😎
Thanks! 🙏
Have you tried it with matte medium instead of varnish? That's what I have handy. 🙏
I haven’t, but worth a shot! Matte should help grab the pen. Please let me know how it goes!
If it wants to stick to the surface it’s drying on you could slide some parchment paper underneath just in case! Usually it seems ok just coating one side at a time 😄
@@artwithchristine thanks! 😀
Pretty, but I have a feeling it won't play anymore.
I couldn’t resist. It’s about clean energy. Worked great with the idea of upcycling 😄
How long does it take to learn mirror writing?
It wasn’t pretty at first but in about a month it didn’t look too bad and in a few months it felt almost normal… and in a year it feels natural with my left hand (I’m right handed).. you are inspiring me to make a how to video! How I learned was to take a photo of typed out letters and numbers and just flipped it mirror image. Then I practiced “drawing” the letters and numbers. It looked awful at first. Like a little kid learning to write. I printed the photo out and would trace the letters and numbers over and over and then began working on sentences. It’s not a fast process, but I worked at it about 10-20 min a day max and it grew! Highly recommend! You’ll feel like Leonardo da Vinci! 🙌
In a year it felt natural.. but now it’s almost over 2 years and it’s seriously helped me with drawing with my non-dominant hand as well! Please try it! 😄
@artwithchristine that's not a long time at all! I love mirror writing for my journals and also i get worried about people reading my therapy journals and shadow work journals so I've been devoloping this skill everyday and every time I write and the uncomfortable part is awkward feeling using the left hand lol but the result is fun 😁
I completely relate! When I caught my oldest reading my journal it inspired me to learn!! Amazing how necessity inspires 🙌
That awkward feeling has gotten better over time! Began keeping a tiny sketchbook/journal in my purse so whenever we have to wait somewhere or in line it gets pulled out hehe! 🤭
You are so talented! Thanks for sharing
Thank you, but it’s more of seriously persistent lol!!! Lots of this stuff is trial and error and following those “happy accidents” 😄🙌
@artwithchristine a true master of trusting the process 🍀
That’s the most stress free way to go! Lol! Like working a puzzle 🧩
Have wood make paper make it look like wood
This made me laugh. 😂Thank you!!! 😄
I am zero percent artistic. I mean it. I’m not artistic in any way. Not with decorating, drawing, coloring, clothing, anything. I was always so confused in art class thinking one day it would just come to me. 😅 Anyway, I absolutely love your page and how creative you are. Your kids will be so lucky to have so many memories of you one day. My mama passed in 2019 and all I really have is an old book she used to write her contacts in.
That book of your mom’s is a precious keepsake! I have one kid just beginning college and one still in high school and they’ve been great sports with all the piles of projects.😂 Thank you for the encouragement! Creativity blooms in many ways and your beautiful words made me tear up! I bet taking a moment you will see things in your daily life that result from your creativity blooming! Just a hunch from working with so many in class the last 6 years. The creativity is there! Sometimes it takes others to help you see it. Be blessed!
Greetings and thank you from South Africa! You share such interesting techniques! They inspire and are so "do- able" and at the same producing a unique outcome. Your piece looks wonderful. Good wishes to you and Jay. 🌻
Thought of you when I recorded my voiceover this morning! Jay is doing great and happily crunching his breakfast while I try to record. LOL! I really hope that you give these ideas a try! You'll find that fearlessness brings so much freedom! I love taking the often overlooked and transforming them and while trying to keep it budget friendly as possible. Hope you have fun and I'd love to hear how it goes!
It kinda reminds me of a paper sack for some reason. In your next video you should make one thats meant to look like wood. That’s be awesome! 😁
I’ll definitely keep that in mind 🙌
That is so cool! ❤ I love the pages and maps inside 💠. Thank you for sharing.
It’s become the norm when on road trips when we stop I always grab an extra map lol! Thank you for taking the time to watch!
Your technique is incredibly helpful-thank you so much!
Most welcome! So glad it helps!
F****** cool I like your style
Thank you! Brain dump doodles 😄
I’ve been bamboozled
My family was, too! 😂
They look so much like wood! love the idea!
It was an accidental happy and rolled with it and now it’s a technique I use often! 🙌
Love Love Love this!!!
Zero stress! Lol! How we roll in my art classes 🙌 you the water to coffee ratio and also allowing paper to be partially out of the coffee so it “crawls” up. 😄 Have fun!
Wow that's great
Thanks so much!
Looks amazing and real!!! Subscribed!
Thank you for the support! And so glad you like it!
amazing
Thank you so much! Was looking for wood alternatives since I don’t have access to a saw 😄
You were as fun as the project! Thank you! I'm trying this technique asap! 😊😊😊
Would love to know how it goes! It’s trial and error and there will be happy accidents 😄🙌
✨️😁😅✨️
Thank you for the encouragement!
Beautiful drawing book
Thank you so much! They loved it!
No they don't! So cool.
Definitely a method I’ll use again! Thank you! 😄
Wow I am so glad I subscribed! You are so creative and I’m loving all of these ideas!!
Thank you for the encouragement! I love to experiment with supplies. Aiming to do how tos on all these!
