Solidarity with Salmon Rushdie
After the recent attack on Salmon Rushdie and the blatant intimidation of Richard Dawkins, I feel compelled to raise awareness about the importance of freedom of speech. As a small act of solidarity, I encourage everyone to read a short passage from The Satanic Verses and share it on their social media platforms. Let us not allow fear and violence to silence our voices and suppress our ideas. Together, let us stand up for our right to express ourselves freely and without fear of persecution.

The Evolution of the Latin Alphabet
Переглядів 6 тис.5 років тому
This was a lecture I gave in 2014 at the invitation of the Italian Consulate in Shanghai concerning the evolution of the Latin alphabet. It was part of a larger conference that dealt with romanization. I came across the PowerPoint file, and I decided it to make this video out of it. I hope you enjoy it, and if you are interested in seeing more things like this, please subscribe to my channel. T...

Would have been clearer if you had used the Phoenician alphabet rather than the later Hebrew alphabet to show direct contact with the Egyptian script, in my opinion. It was the Phoenicians who carried the alphabet westward, beginning with the Greeks, after all.

"But he grew old", may have been referencing things that go along with bravery. All wars are over ground.

Is it true that Mao Zedong wanted to totally "Romanize" the Chinese Mandarin?

The idea was kicked around for a long time, but I've never heard that about Mao Zedong. I do know for sure that Lu Xun and Hu Shi wanted to do away with characters, but that will surely never happen. China would disintegrate without the characters. They did simplify the characters (sort of) in the Mainland, but I've noticed a lot of young people preferring the traditional ones these days.

Latin alphabet has Turkic origin. It's originally from central Asia.

there is none, even the turkic alphabet originated from egyptian by being a descendant of arabic writing.

Yes. Everything is turkish. The Turks have invented everything on Earth. Most of all nationalistic stupidities.

Luwio-Anatolian (Etruscan) not Turkic. Turks left their Khaganate in Central Asia and entered Anatolian Peninsula many centuries later than Etruscans left it.

Thank you so much for this well-organized and well-explained lecture! As a linguistic and history nerd myself, I find it all too important for everyone to have such great access to the foundation and development of our modern writing systems!

I feel the poem is not about death, it is about life, and how you should live it. Where is the land called Eldorado ? “Ride boldly ride, the shade replied if you seek Eldorado”. Live your life boldly, and if you live your life boldly, then you will find Eldorado. One more idea, if you read the poem with the correct tempo, you will hear the horse. Mr Poe was a Genius, for doing that, the careful reader will hear it. Thanks for pointing out the part about the moon, and the valley, I had not thought about that, I think you are correct.
