Nordhouse Dunes Trip in Extreme Weather w/ Casey
Our original plan was to backpack the full length of the Dragon Trail, but with all surrounding campsites closed for the season and weather looking precarious, we set about to hike the extended backpacking loop at Nordhouse Dunes State Wilderness. This loop takes you into the heart of Ludington State Park, through several ecosystems and habitats from shoreline to dunes, interdunal forest to island trails. After several miles of bushwhacking in the dark, we were ready for dinner, drinks and a roaring fire. The next day after setting up camp and hiking the Manistee River Trail, we were confronted with 40mph gale force winds, ice rain and temperatures plummeting to 29 degrees - this was NOT in the forecast! We were no equipped to safely or comfortably endure these conditions, so we packed out and got a hotel in Manistee where we chowed down on Big Al's pizza - a solid call!

Michigan Triple Crown - Day 3 - Manistee River Trail

MI 👑 👑 👑 Day 3: Manistee River Trail, 23 miles. I woke up bright and early for sunrise and the steam rolling off the river. Made my coffee and oats and got dressed. I hit the trail at 8am sharp and again chose to run clockwise starting on the North Country Trail side. Like every day previous, the weather was absolutely perfect. This time I finally seen people. A few tents on both sides of the t...

MI 👑 👑 👑 Day 2: Fifle Lake Loop, 21.5 miles. I arrived at Old US 131 State Forest around 9am, once again I was the only person in the whole campground. I set up on a site with direct access to the trail. Hit the trail around 10:20am running clockwise. The first mile was promising, but I soon realized why some people don’t care too much for this trail.. about 11 miles of it you’re on flat straig...

MI 👑 👑 👑 Day 1: Jordan River Loop 20.5 miles. I arrived at the small dirt parking lot near Pinney Bridge hike in campsite around 9:45 am, grabbed my pack and hiked the short ways into camp. To my surprise, I was the only one there so I had pick of the litter. I chose a nice shaded private site situated along a bluff to set up before hitting the trail clockwise. It was my first time on the JRT a...

ALASKA. WAS. AMAZING. My group flew into Anchorage before heading up to Denali National Park. There we hiked the Savage Alpine & River Trails, and on day 2 I climbed to the peak of Healy mountain. We headed farther north to Chena. I hiked Angel Rocks peak and a nice valley gorge trail that followed a stream before joining the gang for a tour of the Aurora Ice House, where we drank martinis from...

As many times as I’ve backpacked along the Potawatomi and Waterloo Pinckney Trails, this was only my second time completing it from end to to end. I stayed at Pines, Green Lake and Blind Lake. Join us for the finale of our trip along the 42 mile Picture Rocks National Lakeshore thru-hike! Today our journey takes us from a rainy Mosquito River campground to the windy shores of Miners Beach. We made it out just in time, as we pulled into our hotel, wind, rain, and fog all picked up tremendously, and temperatures plummeted into the 30's at night.

Most definitely! That wind and ice was something else
You can still download updates and dlc after the shop has closed. This is directly from their website.
@@matthewfreant9548 yeah at the time of recording this I thought all access would be cut. I’ve since modded my Wii U and you can still download any necessary updates through NUSspli. Super glad I modded it, now I can keep all my GC, Wii and Wii U discs in great shape since I’ve installed everything to the HDD.
i have done all 3 of these trails a couple dozen times. fife lake loop is the only one i have issues with goofy people. i don't camp in the campgrounds and i often carry a gun.
OMG! When I did the Fife Lake Loop solo in 2022, I was the only one in that campground. A guy in an older blue panel van kept driving slowly by and then stopped and walked up to my tent at dark. I actually hid in the woods when I saw him coming. He was searching my tent site. It was a very uneasy night. I’m a woman in my 60’s. I just did the Manistee loop and it was great. Awesome video btw!
@@buffyvachon8026 so bizarre, now that I’ve talked about this experience, I’ve been hearing similar stories from others. I’d just avoid camping alone there or skip fife altogether as it’s really not even a very great trail imho. Some of the east side of the trail was nice, but doesn’t hold a candle to other trails in Michigan!
Hi, very helpful video as my wife and i are planning on running there Oct 5th. (Ultra runners) Can you tell me about the water situation... How many oz's did you carry, did the pump work where you parked? We will be going counterclockwise and was hoping to get away with 60 oz of water and not filtering along the way. The plan is light and fast. Any intell on the water is appreciated. Thanks!
Had that happen to me Fall of ‘22 at the Manistee River Trail. All by myself age 67 at a beautiful overlook campsite. Feeling great but did not realize I was by one of those dirt access roads. About midnight two guys in quads come roaring into my campsite. I got assertive and let them know I didn’t appreciate the intrusion. I was scared but wasn’t going to show it. Turns out they were locals and just got off their 2nd shift. They said no one was ever here so they come here. They had all their camping gear and set up near me but down on the river just below me. They were drinking and chopping wood at 2 am. I was 10 miles from my car, so I made the best of it. It did rattle me though. They turn out to be harmless “yahoos” but they could have done me in and no one was around. I made lots of noise when I got up but they were out cold. I packed up and got out of there. I’m not going to let that keep me away but I think you did the right thing.
I’m always worried about that happening any time there are access roads or 2 track nearby. When I was backpacking the High Country Pathway, I spent the 2nd night at Canada Creek Shelter. Turned out there is a 2 track nearby and there were people out on quads in the middle of the night, sounded pretty close. I kept a fire going so they knew someone was in there and didn’t try to come use it as a party shack.
I can't believe you've never done this loop before!! Glad you trusted your instincts and got out of there... Great job finishing the 2nd crown!
Sucks that you ran into those creeps, don't know what the hell is wrong with some people. Do appreciate your choice of music for that segment lol
haha, I was wondering if anyone would notice that, the ambient music from Doom 64 seemed appropriate
I would've left too, that's bad vibes all around
Love the Jordan River Loop... Nice work out there! Knock'em dead at Woodstock! Best of luck to ya!
The JRT was such a pleasant surprise, I definitely want to come back sometime, maybe for a winter trip!
12:47 in the fall time that’s a hallmark picture
10:32 trust me I can tell by your breathing that it’s giving me flashbacks of when I climbed it
9:57 deadman Hill is definitely straight up and very challenging. I just did the small loop and that was quite a bit for me. You can test yourself to see if you’re in shape once you hit that area and apparently I’m not.
3:23 you must’ve literally just shot this video and uploaded it because the temperatures in Michigan has not been that great. They’ve been kind of warm till just recently and overnight temperatures are currently perfect right now. This last week has been in the 40s and 50s overnight and lower Michigan.
I was out there the 19th-21st of Aug! The weather was about perfect as it gets, lucked out big time!
Unfortunately it’ll be a little bit before I get the next 2 uploaded, got a big race this weekend then straight back to work! Hopefully some time next week 😃
2:07 looks like a good spot to be set up
I’ve done little clips off of all three of the triple Crown, but I’ve never done the whole thing so it’s nice to watch somebody attempted. I’ve got a few friends that actually have done it but UA-camr too so people in Michigan are watching. I actually got recommended you this morning probably because I’ve been there love to go back and fall especially dead man’s hill. It’s so beautiful. I only done the small section the warm up dead man’s hill. It’s like 3 miles and not about wiped me out. It was a small loop.
This literally has popped into my head this past week and I've been non stop thinking about it I faintly remember one where they also sing video killed the radio star
I was finally able to track one of these down, new video posted!
Use to listen to it for hours back in the day!
Ok, I just uploaded the new video 😀
Wow new memory unlocked! Thank u for posting this!
@@C-BearP I meant to post an updated video, I was able to track down a working unit about 2 years ago, along with a working record in the same month! You just reminded me haha. I’ll reply again once I post it.

I love running!

Oh man! This makes me want to get back out and do that again! Your stashed wood is definitely a pro-tip! Looking forward to the rest! Thanks for sharing!!
I definitely look forward to doing it again, it would be great to get a little group together for it!
Very interesting and beautifull. You put out alot of good information 😊you sure know how to eat well and pair with a good drink... liked that turtle 🐢 thanks for sharing 😊😊
Thank you so much for watching!! ❤
Did this hike a few years ago so lots of memories came back ….. I now live in Colorado and you’re right it is beautiful but that Waterloo Pinckney trail is equally as beautiful…. also what I like is there are state campgrounds at perfect spots 😅 pooping in the woods is oh kay…. But give me a good ol vault toilet any day of the week!! 😂 great video … thank you for sharing your memories and reviving mine … ATB Dave Mc
Thanks Dave! And I have to agree with you about the vault toilets 😂 have you seen the ones along the Pictured Rocks trail? Now those are something haha (just the Jon without any walls!)
Looks like a great time. Have a great weekend
That’s for watching! It was a great trip 😊
Thats what we call ruffing it.. you guys rocked it... beautiful sites n scenery.. you gave alot of good information of the area.. thank you 😊
Absolutely! Thanks again for commenting and joining us on the adventure!
We loved every second and minute of that trip..really enjoyed it.❤😊
I’m glad you came along for the journey 🥾 🌲
Really enjoyed the series! Thank you for sharing! Definitely makes me want to go back… And your celebratory hotel/pool/grub! Awesome! 🙌
You just can’t beat the views of Lake Superior! We got so lucky with the weather that trip too
Excellent video, have a great time.
Thank you! We had an amazing time on the trail!
Highly interesting and edgacational...full of interests...well put out... thank you
My God did you ever go through rough territory..you brought out the things you can incounter unexpectedly. A real learning experience. Were glad you made it through all of that... youv got true grit. Very adventurous and beautiful...was very fun too watch all though we really felt for you.😮
We loved every minute and every mile of your video you made it inviting 😊
Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it! I wanted to share as much of the experience as I could, it was one of our favorite trips, definitely a top in Michigan!
Jeremie.. you make it all so inviting and tempting.😊
I appreciate the love 😄
Just found your channel and my wife and I are loving your adventure at Painted Ricks - def one to add to our list! What a beautiful place!
That’s great! Thank you so much for checking out my little channel, I appreciate it. If you ever get a chance, we definitely recommend doing this trip! If you start in Grand Marais and end in Munising, you can stay a night at the Holiday Inn Express, they have a massive pool and hot tub and it’s hardly ever full 😄
@@jeremysart You're welcome. I have a small channel myself and I love sharing our adventures! I always find unique trails and adventures on channels like ours. And we will definitely look at that - when it gets warmer, lol - we are true Floridians 🤣
Great video! Looks like an amazing trail!
I really is! The views are stunning the entire way, not much else like it in Michigan 😊
Excellent video. I didn't appreciate Michigan has so many amazing places to hike and camp. And there doesn't seem to be anyone around, it's like you have the whole place to yourselves! The sunset at the end is gorgeous! Look forward to watching the rest of the 42-mile adventure!
Thank you so much for watching my video Thomas! I really appreciate your comments. Michigan truly does have some beautiful places, most of the West coast of the state is full of gorgeous dunes, some of the best sunsets I’ve ever seen were in Sleeping Bear Dunes and Arcadia. The UP is also full of wonderful surprises from Paradise to Munising to Copper Harbor.
What a fun solo adventure! I wish I'm as self-sufficient and brave as you. I'm amazed how you were able to carry all the supplies you had 👍
I only recently got into winter backpacking, I was searching for another thing I could enjoy during the long Michigan winters. I definitely recommend it! I like doing little overnighters at Blind Lake since it's easy to stash extra provisions like firewood at the dirt road crossing before hiking in 🙂
Pictured Rocks is such a treasure… Thank you for sharing this, definitely looking forward to the rest of the series. My brother and I were about 3 weeks behind you. Honestly, I cannot wait to go back. Such an amazing place! Thanks again, and looking forward to the next one!
Easily one of our favorite trips so far! We also can’t wait to go back, though my wife wants to add on an extra day so that day 2 isn’t 16 miles haha. Probably stay an extra night at Trappers Lake between Au Sable & Coves
Beautiful! And I enjoyed the beer reviews. :)
More to come! <3
Done this hike to Blind lake campground a few times … also did the waterloo Pinckney trail so all these places seem very familiar 😊 …. If you ever decide to purchase some sort of action camera I can thoroughly recommend the DJI Action camera …. None of the problems of the go pro’s (software, battery, cold weather crapping out) and all of the great features plus it’s cheaper 👍👍 anyhoo enjoying your videos thank you for making them 👍👍
Thanks for watching! I remember checking out your Waterloo-Pinckney Trail video before through hiking it myself. That first time I went I was taking my nephew on his first trip, it was 98-100 degrees everyday, 100% humidity and the mosquitos were insane, then it rained on the last day hahaha. I went back out solo the next year an had a wonderful redemption trip. We're lucky to have such a great trail system here in SE MI!
@@jeremysart oh cool … I hope you found it informative 👍👍 …. That alternate route under the bridge wasn’t quite hooked up to the main trail (or if it was we didn’t find the sign) when we did it so we had to back track and pick up the original trail 😠 . I’m out in Colorado now ( wife wanted to be closer to family) getting one or two hikes and some fly fishing in … views around here are absolutely incredible. Winters are harsh and dangerous up in the mountains so I’m going to concentrate on getting back to fitness to take on some popular back pack trips near me in the spring … watch this space 😄 ATB Dave Mc
You’ve been hoarding videos for a year and a half!! lol! You come up with some pretty non-traditional routes, I have to say! I’m impressed. Thanks for sharing. Anxious to make my way back… especially in July weather! lol!
Hahaha, yeah I’ve been on a few bigger trips since 2022 and I was super excited to edit videos and then I don’t know what happened 😅 but I just got new editing software that seems to work way better than what I was using before. Currently editing Pictured Rocks and Isle Royale, then a “redemption” trip on the Waterloo and I’ll be all caught up 😄
@@jeremysart Heck yeah! Quit goofing off and finish them! 🤣🤣 JK… but I definitely enjoy them. Thanks again for sharing!
So mad that I didn't join! Super cool! Youll have to show me how to put together a video so I can start making some 😂🤙
Absolutely! See ya Thursday @ midnight for that long cold run haha. I can definitely give ya some easy tips on simple video editing 😄
This was sooo cool (no pun intended!) I was strongly considering coming here as well, but took a different (and much less enjoyable) journey! So, did anyone else show up to the camp? Thanks for sharing the “fun”, I truly appreciate it! (Btw, I’m formally going to attempt the HCP sometime this year, nothing concrete yet, but you are welcome to join!)
Too funny, I was just commenting on your Shingle Mill video about that exactly! And what a trip it would have been had you showed up to Blind Lake the same day haha. One other guy did show up around 8:30pm with his dog and set up camp nearby and hung out by the fire for a little bit.
Oh, and one more thing, my folks live not 20 minutes from the HCP, I'm sure they'd be happy to drop a resupply at Clear Lake State Park around the halfway point, making it possible to pack lighter. I also know a few good places to eat in the area after the trip.
@@jeremysart I’ll hit you up and give you my details. We can make something happen, for sure. 👍
@@jeremysart The resupply definitely sweetens the pot! lol!!
This is so inspiring! I'm currently trying to redecorate my bedroom to have a 90's vaporwave vibe.
You should! I would love to see what you come up with so be sure to share!
Good job, indeed! I'd like to do similar hikes and overnight camping, yours looks so fun! I have to say I am surprised there weren't more people around. It almost gives an apocalyptic vibe, like "The Last of Us" vibe 😆
It is always delightfully surprising when the trails aren't busy on a beautiful day!
Have they replaced the bridge by now?
A new bridge has been approved and should be installed next year, they have also worked to replace the old dangerous boardwalks!
good to know but wondering why it takes so long to make a footbridge! Drop a couple of logs across the river together until you build something!
I stumbled across this path by accident and am very intrigued! Your experience definitely gives me some caution! Thanks for sharing! Really enjoyed following along!!
Hey! I’d love to have a redemption trip on this trail with a friend or small group, just saying! Might be a great late fall, early winter or early spring trip.
@@jeremysart Right on!! I’m kicking around the idea of early next year, give or take. Hit me up, I’m totally up for it. Excited to tackle this trail. (And I can’t believe more people aren’t talking about it!! Shhh!!!) 😉
All it needs is a hot tub with purple and teal neon lights with that classic white tile
Hah, wish I had a hot tub 😂 if I were a millionaire I’d create such an amazing space, my very own pool rooms lol
