If homes can implement their own stricter standards then this loosening of restrictions by minister of LTC is pointless. Also staff will try to keep care to under 15 minutes which they did during covid leading to isolation and neglect of residents. Ministry should implement more diaper changes per shift, more mandatory shifting out of wheelchairs to bed during the day to alleviate discomfort and more mandatory socialization with residents to alleviate isolation. There are too many loose standards and residents who are mobile and verbally demanding get way more care and socialization then those bedbound, wheel chair bound or mute.

If staff increases they will just take longer breaks when they finish. Unless two changes of brief per shift are mandated they do the minimum one change. Even if it is in the careplan they do not follow it always. It has to be mandated by legislation. 4 hour increase will mean nothing if you don't change the laws to more showers per week they will still do the minimum.

What a positive video! Not only does it promote family councils but also Providence Healthcare despite the quality of long term care it provides. My uncle passed away last year; he was there for five years on the second floor. A friend's mother was there for three on the forth and recently passed away. This ostentatious, shameless promotion of the Houses of Providence is truly in poor taste for those seniors who are still there suffering from neglect and with an administrator and new Family Council chairwoman who have no idea of what is happening in the units. Many seniors still don't have a voice (0:11)because advocating for collective concerns (1:10) means those who require extra attention or care are not heard. Family Council promoting the administrator (1:39) belies the ongoing issues to be resolved including poor communication amongst PSWs, nursing staff and families. When my uncle passed, the palliative care (3:54) consisted of pain medication, a short visit by the doctor, RN and priest and a bag with a toothbrush and CD player. A reclining chair was brought in for my aunt. The RPN and PSW staff didn't even bother to look in and had no concept of how to offer condolences when he finally, thankfully, was taken out of his misery. If it took this committee to come up with that, it's not surprising that this self-aggrandizing, rather ridiculous (5:35 how about asking a medical professional?) video for Providence serves to show how few goals, if any, are achieved to actually help the residents (6:13). If the administrator really was sincere (8:22), my uncle would not have spent most days in his room with nothing to do. My friend's mother would not have needed to hire a daily, private caregiver for fifty hours a week nor would they continue to be as sorely short staffed on a regular basis. They wouldn't have been cutting back on activities and brought back the Alzheimer's Society and their own Adult Day Program staff to help throughout the Houses of Providence given the prevalence of dementia on each unit/floor now. Family Council would also step up and not simply ignore the secure, specialized units on the forth floor. This video does not showcase anything other than the braggadocio of those involved.

Excellent introduction to a subject that can be daunting when first moving a loved one into a new home. Knowing that fellow families are available to offer advice and knowledge is a welcome relief. Having a council that can address the subsequent challenges gives voice and an ability to share, learn and make progressive actions.

Thank you for this but am somewhat disappointed that no mention is made of the support from the regional family council networks.
